People in the UK can get their first glimpse on Wednesday of banknotes bearing King Charles III's image.

They will be revealed to the public at the opening of the Bank of England's "The Future of Money" exhibition.

The four new banknotes with the king's portrait -- £5, £10, £20 and £50 -- go on display at the central bank's in-house museum at its London headquarters, before entering circulation on June 5.

Based on a photograph owned by the royal household and made available in 2013, Charles approved the final designs of the notes featuring his engraved portrait in late 2022.

That was just months after he became king following the death that September of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

"This is the first time that the Bank of England has issued a note with a new monarch on it, because Queen Elizabeth has been on our banknotes since the 1960s," the museum's curator Jennifer Adam explained.

The new notes are polymer -- which has been slowly replacing paper money in the UK since 2016 -- and feature Charles' image on the front as well as in the see-through security window.

Coins bearing Charles' head -- based on a portrait by British sculptor Martin Jennings -- which entered circulation in December 2022 are also on temporary display at the museum.&nbsp;

The site details the history of the Bank of England -- which has been issuing some banknotes since it was established in 1694 -- as well as a multitude of other money-making information.

The Pentagon chief had not informed the top government leaders during two separate secret hospitalisation incidents which led to a boiling controversy with opposition leaders demanding his resignation for negligence.&nbsp;

Pentagon in its report accepted that the process followed under which Austin transferred his powers to his deputy could have been improved.&nbsp;

“Although, as hindsight has shown, the process for making decisions to transfer the Secretary’s authority could and should be improved. Nothing examined during this review demonstrated any indication of ill intent or an attempt to obfuscate,” the report added.

The assessment by the Pentagon comes a couple of weeks after Austin was once again hospitalised at the&nbsp;Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Unlike&nbsp;the previous hospitalisations that were kept secret, deputy defense secretary Kathleen Hicks, Joint Chiefs of Staff, the White House and Congress were notified about Austin's health crisis.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened to Austin?</h2>

Austin had vanished from the public eye in December&nbsp;and early January this year after suffering complications from treatment for prostate cancer.

Austin kept the hospitalisations secret, with the White House, Pentagon and other important departments and people remaining oblivious that President Joe Biden's top military adviser was missing from action for an extended period.&nbsp;

Austin, 70, had undergone minor surgery on December 22 after early detection of prostate cancer in routine screening.&nbsp;

After the procedure, Austin recovered without event and returned home the next morning. However, complications soon emerged and evaluation revealed that abdominal fluid collection was impairing the function of his small intestines.

The defense secretary was hospitalised on New Year's Day (Jan 1) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to complications from an elective medical procedure.

Pentagon has given a clean chit to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin over his secret hospitalisations related to his cancer diagnosis. In a three-page concluding report released on Monday (Feb 26), the Pentagon said it found no "indication of ill intent or an attempt to obfuscate" by Austin or his staff. The Pentagon chief had not informed the top government leaders during two separate secret hospitalisation incidents which led to a boiling controversy with opposition leaders demanding his resignation for negligence. Pentagon in its report accepted that the process followed under which Austin transferred his powers to his deputy could have been improved. “Although, as hindsight has shown, the process for making decisions to transfer the Secretary’s authority could and should be improved. Nothing examined during this review demonstrated any indication of ill intent or an attempt to obfuscate,” the report added. The assessment by the Pentagon comes a couple of weeks after Austin was once again hospitalised at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Unlike the previous hospitalisations that were kept secret, deputy defense secretary Kathleen Hicks, Joint Chiefs of Staff, the White House and Congress were notified about Austin's health crisis. Austin had vanished from the public eye in December and early January this year after suffering complications from treatment for prostate cancer. Austin, 70, had undergone minor surgery on December 22 after early detection of prostate cancer in routine screening. After the procedure, Austin recovered without event and returned home the next morning. However, complications soon emerged and evaluation revealed that abdominal fluid collection was impairing the function of his small intestines. The defense secretary was hospitalised on New Year's Day (Jan 1) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to complications from an elective medical procedure. The European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevicius took to X and thanked those who voted in favour of the bill.&nbsp;

He also called the policy EU’s “concrete contribution to preserve biodiversity, precious ecosystems, healthy soils and waters – first and foremost, for our farmers.”&nbsp;

The nature law still requires final approval from EU member states before it comes into force. This process is typically a formality, but the same cannot be said for this particular legislation as recent EU policies have faced blocks and delays because of pushback in various European countries.&nbsp;

<h2>What is the law about?</h2>

The nature law is said to be one of the biggest environmental legislation in the EU. It requires 27 member states to introduce measures to restore at least 20 per cent of the bloc’s land and seas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.&nbsp;

The legislation is aimed at reversing the decline of Europe’s natural habitats as 81 per cent of them have been classed as being in poor health.&nbsp;

In line with the law, member states will be required to restore at least 30 per cent of forests, grasslands, and wetlands, as well as rivers, lakes, and coral beds from poor to good condition by 2030.&nbsp;

The nature law will also target specific areas like the restoration of peatlands so they can absorb carbon dioxide.&nbsp;

Satellite images of the hotly disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea show a new floating barrier across its entrance, near where Philippine ships and China coast guard vessels have had frequent run-ins.

One of the images taken by Maxar Technologies on Feb. 22 and viewed by Reuters showed the barrier blocking the mouth of the shoal, where the Chinese coast guard last week claimed to have driven off a Philippine vessel&nbsp;"illegally intruding"&nbsp;into Beijing's waters.

The Philippines, which last week deployed a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) vessel to patrol the shoal and transport fuel to Filipino fishermen in the area, said that China's claims were "inaccurate" and that Manila's activities there were lawful.

China claims the Scarborough Shoal, although it is inside the Philippines' 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone. An international arbitration tribunal in the Hague said in 2016 that China's claims had no legal basis - a decision Beijing has rejected.

That makes the atoll one of Asia's most contested maritime features and a flashpoint for diplomatic flare-ups over sovereignty and fishing rights.

The satellite image bolsters a report and video distributed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Sunday showing two Chinese coast guard inflatable boats deploying floating barriers at the shoal's entrance on Feb 22.

The PCG said that a China coast guard ship shadowed the BFAR vessel, "conducted blocking manoeuvres" about 1.3 nautical miles (2.4 km) off the shoal, and closely approached it.

"We can assume that (the barrier) is intended for Philippine government vessels because they install it every time they monitor our presence within the BDM vicinity," Jay Tarriela, a spokesperson at the Philippine Coast Guard said, referring to Bajo de Masinloc, Manila's name for the shoal.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said "Huangyan Dao", China's name for the shoal, was "China's inherent territory".

"Recently, the Philippine side has taken a series of actions to violate China's sovereignty" in the shoal's waters, she said. "China has to take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests."

Another satellite image showed what Maxar technologies described as "possible Chinese interception of a BFAR vessel" at Scarborough Shoal.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion in annual ship commerce. Its territorial claims overlap with those of the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.

"What we are seeing at the Scarborough Shoal now is likely the beginning of Beijing's pushback against Manila's pushback," said Ian Storey, a senior fellow at Singapore’s ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

Since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr took office in June 2022, the Philippines has challenged China's presence at Scarborough and its attempts to stop the resupply of Filipino troops stationed at Second Thomas Shoal, he said.

"China's attempts to prevent Filipino fishermen from fishing at Scarborough Shoal is absolutely illegal," Storey said. "The 2016 arbitral tribunal ruling gave fishermen from both countries the right to (fish there). Manila is merely supporting the legitimate rights of Filipino fishermen."

The shoal is coveted for its bountiful fish stocks and a stunning turquoise lagoon that provides a safe haven for vessels during storms.

The Chinese removed the barrier a few hours after the BFAR vessel left, Tarriela said. It was not clear from the photos how robust the barrier was and whether it would have posed an obstacle to larger warships.

In an article on Sunday, state-media outlet Global Times said "the Philippines has abused and unilaterally sabotaged the foundation of Beijing's goodwill to Manila" that allowed Philippine fishermen to operate nearby, by working against China's sovereignty and jurisdiction.

"If such provocations persist, China could be forced to take more effective measures to control the situation," the article said, citing experts.

All planned aid convoys into the north have been denied by Israeli authorities in recent weeks. The last convoy allowed in was on January 23, according to the World Health Organization.

Even convoys cleared in advance with Israeli authorities have been blocked or come under fire.

Laerke cited an event that occurred on Sunday (Feb 25) in which a convoy led by the Palestinian Red Crescent (PRCS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to evacuate 24 patients from the besieged Al Amal hospital in the southern city of Khan Yunis was delayed for seven hours, resulting in the arrest of paramedics.

"The WHO-led convoy was delayed by Israeli authorities for several hours as soon as it left the hospital, even though all staff personnel and vehicles had previously coordinated with the Israeli side," Laerke said to reporters in Geneva.

He claimed that "the Israeli military stripped all paramedics of their uniforms and ordered patients and personnel out of ambulances."

The convoy was forced to abandon another 31 patients at Amal hospital, which is no longer operational following 40 attacks in the past month alone that have killed at least 25 people.

According to Laerke, "Three PRCS paramedics were subsequently held, despite having previously given their personal information to the Israeli soldiers." There is just one that has been made available. 
 
"This is not an isolated incident," he stressed.

Humanitarian workers face unacceptable and avoidable risks as aid convoys are consistently blocked and even targeted. 
 
In response to Israel's failure to guarantee the safety of its emergency medical teams, the PRCS announced a 48-hour suspension of operations in Gaza.

Jens Laerke emphasised that the organisation would persist in reminding Israeli forces of their minimum obligation to facilitate safe, smooth, and rapid passage during alerted aid missions.

The conflict in Gaza commenced following an October 7 attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, resulting in approximately 1,160 deaths in Israel, primarily civilians, as per an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Hamas reportedly took around 250 hostages, with 130 still remaining in Gaza, according to Israel.
