Out of 499 deaths, 307 took place in the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, Africa's oldest reserve located in eastern KwaZulu-Natal province. "This is the highest poaching loss within this province," said Environment Minister Barbara Creecy.

"Multi-disciplinary teams continue to work tirelessly in an attempt to slow this relentless pressure," she added.

<h2>Efforts by South African government</h2>

Efforts by the government have shown scattered positive results, with lower poaching cases being registered in the Kruger National Park.

An impressive 37 per cent decrease from 2022 was recorded here last year, with 78 rhinos poached and killed. No rhinos were poached in any other national park in the country.

This is the direct result of the authorities resorting to tightening the security and mandating new employees to take a lie detector test amid concerns that some workers might be in cahoots with poachers.

Law enforcement agencies also cracked down on poachers last year. At least 49 suspected poachers were detained by police in 2023 from the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi park.

As per the minister, at least 45 of the poachers were tried in courts. One of them was a former field ranger who was given a 10-year jail term for killing a rhino.

Rhinos are killed as their horns are highly sought in black markets. In terms of weight, the price of rhino horn puts even gold and cocaine to shame. This makes unguarded rhinos roaming in jungles and national parks an easy target for illegal horn traders.

Congratulating the nations, the FATF said, "These jurisdictions had committed to implement an Action Plan to resolve swiftly the identified strategic deficiencies within agreed timeframes."

When the FATF places a jurisdiction under increased monitoring, "it means the country has committed to implement an Action Plan to resolve swiftly the identified strategic deficiencies within agreed timeframes."

Currently, there are 21 nations — Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Croatia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Türkiye, Vietnam, and Yemen — are on the list.

It also repeated its condemnation of Russia for its invasion of Ukraine two years ago. It said: "One year after the Russian Federation’s illegal, unprovoked and unjustified full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, the FATF reiterates its deepest sympathies for the people of Ukraine and continues to deplore the huge loss of lives and malicious destruction caused by the Russia Federation’s ongoing brutal attack on Ukraine."

"There is a risk that New Zealand's U-turn could prompt policymakers in England to reconsider," she said.

Palestinian militant group Hamas said Tuesday (Feb 27) it received the draft proposal hammered out by key mediators in Paris to materialise a ceasefire in war-torn Gaza. “All these are links in the same chain: the death, or rather, the massacre of Alexei (Navalny), the judicial reprisals against other critics of the regime, including me, the strangulation of freedom in the country, the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine,” the 70-year-old told the court.&nbsp;

Orlov’s remarks were broadcast on Memorial’s Telegram channel. The United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Russia, Mariana Katzarova called the trial “an orchestrated attempt to silence the voices of human rights defenders in Russia.”

He said she smelled, but Abouchuk refused to take a shower when he asked. The man became upset, retrieved a pistol from the garage, and shot her in the head. Smith told the police where Abouchuk's body was left, and authorities later found a skull with a bullet wound there. For Abouchuk's murder, Smith faces 30 to 99 years, the report said. 'He had another life...' Smith’s wife Stephanie Bissland attended the three-week-long murder trial. Given the recent uptick in activity, Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center has issued a yellow alert, advising residents to refrain from approaching the crater for their safety.

A yellow alert signifies that volcanic emissions have begun and residents are advised to stay vigilant and prepare for possible evacuation from the affected zone.

The Mexican government said, "Avoid attempting to climb the volcano, as recent incidents have involved explosive eruptions projecting incandescent fragments. It is crucial to observe the exclusion radius of 12 kilometers from the crater, as being within this area is not safe."

"Additionally, during periods of heavy rain, it is advised to stay clear of the base of ravines due to the potential danger posed by mudslides and debris flows," it added.

Popocatepetl, affectionately known as "Popo" by locals, stands as Mexico's most active volcano.

With an elevation of 5,393 metres (17,693 feet), the mountain, whose name translates to ‘smoking mountain’ in the Nahuatl indigenous language, is situated just 70 km (43.5 miles) southeast of Mexico City.

Since 1994, Popocatépetl has been consistently active, undergoing periods of heightened activity that, in December 2000, resulted in the evacuation of 40,000 residents from their homes.

In May 2023, ash emissions prompted authorities to establish evacuation shelters, close nearby schools, and temporarily suspend operations at airfields, including Mexico City's Benito Juárez International Airport.

Highlighting the vulnerability of aircraft to volcanic material, the US Geological Survey (USGS) noted that ash particles can cause damage to the fuselage blades and significantly impede engine performance.

Despite intermittent increases in activity, the USGS cautioned that Popocatépetl has the potential for more severe consequences.
