Cruise ship leaves eight passengers stranded on African island

Eight passengers on a Norwegian Cruise line ship, including a pregnant woman and an old man with a heart ailment, were left stranded on an African island after the ship departed without them, according to a New York Post article.
A South Carolinian couple reported that they and four other Americans and two Australians are stuck on the island of Sao Tome in Central Africa since the captain of the ship allegedly refused to allow them to board again.
The eight passengers left behind have now been struggling for days to catch up with their ship.''We have never had an experience like this before,'' said one of the abandoned passengers.
According to a statement from Norwegian Cruise Line, the passengers were a little late getting back to the ship on March 27. ''Eight guests who were on the island on their own or with a private tour missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all-aboard time of 3 pmlocal time,'' the statement said.
'This is a very untoward situation, guests are accountable for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship's intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.''

The stranded couple, Jill and Jay Campbell of South Carolina, related how last Friday's island trip ran into trouble and the operator was unable to get them back to the ship in time. When they arrived at the harbour, the ship was still anchored, but the island's Coast Guard helped them get back onboard by boat. However, the captain of the ship allegedly refused them permission to return, so they were left without any money, valuables, or necessary medications.
The couple said that the passengers spent 15 hours travelling through six countries to try to rejoin their ship on Sunday in Gambia.
They further said that several members are elderly, one is a paraplegic and one woman is pregnant. One member of the group had been without his heart medication for five days and had become ill.
The passengers are now heading to a port in Senegal, where the cruise is set to dock.
