Babysitting jobs becoming popular among Indian students in US as inflation bites

More and more Indian students in the United States are taking up babysitting jobs as they feel the heat of the cost of living crisis and other part-time job opportunities get scarce. According to a Times of India report, the students are taking off-campus jobs even if it’s illegal, to make ends meet.
Babysitting jobs have become a hot topic especially among girls, due to a safe environment and additional perks like food, accommodation or both. The trend is more visible among students fromTelangana and Andhra Pradesh, and they are mostly catering to Indian families based in the US. The pay scale varies from place to place but is generally low due to an oversupply of job seekers.
According to a report by Open Doors 2024, there are approximately 39,000 Indian students in Texas, 20,000 in Illinois, 13,500 in Ohio, and 7,000 in Connecticut, and 50 per cent of them are Telugu-speaking.

The Times of India report highlighted that most students makesomewhere between $13 and $18 per hour for babysitting jobs. One student from Hyderabad, who now stays in Ohio, was quoted as saying by the TOI, “I babysit a six-year-old boy for about eight hours a day and get paid $13 an hour. I also get a meal for taking care of the boy."
Another student in Connecticut said, “I have to take care of a two-and-a-half-year-old six days a week. For those six days, the girl's parents take care of food and accommodation. On Sundays, I stay in my friend's room."
