Aditya L1 Launched: ISRO Shares Launch Images 

After Chandrayaan-3, ISRO successfully launched Aditya L1, India’s first solar mission on Saturday (September 2, 2023) from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. Here are the launch photos shared by ISRO.

Aditya L1 satellite is dedicated to a comprehensive study of the sun. It has seven payloads out of which five are developed by ISRO and two by Indian academic institutes in collaboration with ISRO.


Aditya L1 is on its journey of 125 days to the destination L1 Lagrange point. L1 is a point in space where the gravitational forces of Earth and Sun are in equilibrium which will allow the satellite to remain stable.

It will stay for 16 days in Earth-bound orbits, during which it will undergo 5 manoeuvres to gain the necessary velocity.

The satellite will stay approximately 1.5 million km away from Earth which is around 1 per cent of the Earth-Sun distance.

Sun is a giant sphere of gas and Aditya L1 will study the outer atmosphere, it will neither land on the sun nor will go any further towards it.

ISRO’s Aditya-L1 Launched: Previous Solar Missions by other Space Agencies 

As India launched its first solar mission successfully on September 2 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, we take a look at the solar missions launched by various space agencies in the world. 

STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) 

This mission was launched by NASA in October 2006. It consists of two spacecraft, STEREO-A and STEREO-B, which are positioned ahead of and behind the Earth in orbit around the Sun. The space agency lost connection with STEREO-B on October 1, 2014 however, STEREO-A continues to work properly. 

This was launched by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in September 2006. This was a follow up mission after Japan’s YOHKOH (Solar-A) mission in 1991. 

This was also a NASA mission that was launched in February 2010 to observe the Sun and study how solar activity drives space weather. It conducts experiments to understand the sun’s magnetic field, solar activity, and its influence on space weather. 

IRIS (Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph) 

Aditya-L1 consists of a total of seven payloads on-board with four of them carrying out remote sensing of the Sun and three of them carrying in-situ observations.

It is a joint mission by ESA and NASA that was launched in February 2020. Solar Orbiter’s main objective is to study the Sun’s polar regions and the solar wind to understand the Sun-Earth connection. 

Another NASA’s solar mission was launched in August 2018 to approach the Sun closer than any previous mission. Parker Solar Probe was placed within 3.9 million miles (6.2 million kilometres) closer to the Sun, making it the first mission ever to do so. 


ISRO’s Aditya-L1 Launched: Previous Solar Missions by other Space Agencies

PSLV-C57: All about Aditya-L1 Launch Vehicle

The Indian Space Research Organisation is all set to launch its first-ever solar mission on Saturday at 11:50 am IST from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. 

PSLV-C57 is the PSLV-XL (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) variant. With this mission, PSLV-XL will mark its 25th flight.

The PSLV-XL is the ‘full configuration’ PSLV, fitted with six strap-on motors, the maximum for this expendable launch vehicle.

The XL configuration was first used for launching India’s first lunar probe, the Chandrayaan-1, in October 2008. It has since been used for several high-profile missions, including the Mars Orbiter Mission – Mangalyaan, launched in November 2013.

PSLV flew in the XL configuration last in November 2022, placing the EOS-06 satellite, the main payload, and eight nano-satellites in orbit around the earth.

The answer is no. Due to the limited mass, power and volume of the spacecraft that carries the payloads, only a limited set of instruments can be sent on-board to study the Sun.

Then there is also the CA (core alone) version where no strap-on motors are used. The previous two PSLV missions, the PSLV-C55 and PSLV-C56 which placed the TeLEOS-2 and DS-SAR satellites in orbit respectively in April and July this year, had used the CA variant.

Aditya L1: All You Need To Know About ISRO's Solar Mission

Aditya L1 is India's first solar mission. The PSLV-C57 will travel 1.5 million km from the Earth to the Lagrange 1 or L1 point between the Earth and the Sun. The mission got its name from the L1 point of the Sun-Earth System.

The Aditya L1 spacecraft will carry seven payloads to observe the photosphere, chromosphere and the outermost layer of the Sun using electromagnetic and magnetic field detectors.

The mission is scheduled to be launched on 02 September 2023 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, at 11:50 am IST.

The first solar mission of India has been allocated a budget of Rs 378 crore ($44.7 million).

What payloads Aditya-L1 mission will carry?

According to ISRO, the Aditya L1 will carry Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC), Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT), Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS), HEL1OS (High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer), ASPEX (Aditya Solar wind Particle Experiment), Plasma Analyser Package For Aditya (PAPA) and MAG (Magnetometer).

Jupiter is a gas giant with no solid surface, consisting mostly of hydrogen and helium. A rover would simply sink into its atmosphere without finding a stable landing spot.



Similar to Jupiter, Saturn is a gas giant with no solid surface to land on. Its outer layers are mostly gases and liquids, making it impossible for a rover to find solid ground.

 Neptune is another gas giant with a lack of solid surface. Its thick atmosphere is composed of hydrogen, helium, and methane, posing challenges for a rover to find a stable area to land.



Uranus, like Neptune, is a gas giant with no solid surface. Its atmosphere is primarily hydrogen and helium, making it unsuitable for rover landings.



The sun is a star composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, with extremely high temperatures and intense radiation. Any rover trying to land on the sun would be incinerated instantly.

Moons like Titan (Saturn's moon) and Triton (Neptune's moon) have subsurface oceans beneath layers of ice. A rover would have difficulty landing and exploring due to the challenges posed by the icy surfaces.

 Planets with extremely high gravity, such as those in close proximity to their host stars, would require a rover to withstand immense pressure during landing, making it challenging to safely land and explore.

Rovers are sent to other planets to help with research and exploration programmes. But we have some planets where we can't even land an object.

Chandrayaan-3 Updates: List of findings on the Moon

According to researchers, dogs have sleep patterns and brain activity similar to humans and dream like us.

On the weekend, Indian PM Narendra Modi announced that the point where India’s lunar space craft soft-landed will be called the ‘Shiv Shakti’ point. Here’s a list of the findings made by the rover on the moon: 

On August 27, ISRO released a graph of temperature variation on the moon and a senior scientist BHM Darukesha shared, “We all believed that the temperature could be somewhere around 20 degrees Centigrade to 30 degrees Centigrade on the surface but it is 70 degrees centigrade. This is surprisingly higher than what we had expected.” 

While roaming on the lunar surface, the Pragyan rover faced an obstacle as it came across a four-metre diameter crater. The space agency said that the crater was positioned 3 metres ahead of the rover’s location. 

On August 3, the Chandrayaan-3 rover ‘unambiguously confirmed’ the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface near the south pole. Other elements detected included aluminium, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon, and oxygen.  The search for hydrogen is underway.
