Russia-Ukraine War: EU Accused of Fuelling Putin’s War by Importing Russian LNG

European governments have been accused of indirectly funding Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine after new data shows Russia earned an estimated €7.2bn last year from exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU. Despite Brussels’ pledge to ban Russian LNG imports by 2027, more than 15 million tonnes of Yamal LNG was delivered to EU ports in 2025, with Europe’s share of shipments rising to over 76 per cent, according to a report by human rights NGO Urgewald. Critics say the continued imports help sustain Russia’s energy revenues, even as pipeline gas to Europe has fallen sharply.
