Parliament Passes Mandatory Christmas Bonus: Who Gets Paid and What Changes Now?

Parliament has officially approved a mandatory Christmas (winter) bonus for employees and pensioners—one of the most talked-about measures of the year. Workers will receive €639 tax-free, while pensioners will get €150, with payouts required before 18–19 December.
The bill passed 48:1, but the debate is far from over. Employers warn of financial strain, liquidity issues, and a breakdown in social dialogue, while the government says the bonus is necessary relief in a tough winter. Sole traders also see major changes, with their flat-rate taxation ceiling doubled.
