Andhra Pradesh Announces New Incentives For More Children
The Andhra Pradesh government has proposed a series of incentives to encourage families to have three or more children, citing concerns over the State’s rapidly declining fertility rate, which has fallen to 1.5—well below the replacement level of 2.1. The measures include cash rewards of ₹30,000 for a third child and ₹40,000 for a fourth, monthly financial support for five years, free education until age 18, longer maternity leave, work-from-home provisions for mothers, and expanded childcare benefits. The move comes amid projections that nearly a quarter of the State’s population could be elderly by mid-century, potentially shrinking the workforce. However, studies from India and abroad suggest that financial incentives alone have had limited success in significantly boosting birth rates over the long term.
