The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is making its closest approach to Earth, captivating astronomers and the public alike. Dubbed an “alien” comet due to its origins beyond our solar system, 3I/ATLAS will pass about 270 million kilometers from Earth on December 19, 2025. Scientists have observed unusual characteristics, including high levels of nickel and iron, and a greenish glow not typical of most comets.
