Moscow's special military operation in Ukraine began nine months ago on February 24, Kherson was one of the major urban centres to collapse. It has been one of the four Ukrainian regions that Putin declared to have been annexed to Russia.

Despite Russian withdrawal, Zelensky says will continue grain initiative

Turkish foreign minister said on Tuesday (November 1) that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will speak to Russian and Ukrainian presidents with a view to restore the grain deal.

"Our president will speak with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky in the coming days," Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters.

"We believe we will overcome this... (The grain deal) benefits everyone."

Amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, reports have indicated that Kyiv and Moscow have accused each other of planning to blow up the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam on the Dnipro river. The dam is in the eastern Kherson region which is currently under Russian occupation.&nbsp;

The Kakhovka dam was built in 1956 on the Dnipro river as part of a hydroelectric power plant. It is 30 metres tall and 3.2 km long. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent address, the hydroelectric power plant holds a volume of about 18 million cubic metres of water.&nbsp;

The dam is also responsible for at least 85 per cent&nbsp;of the water supply to Crimea which was annexed by Russia in 2014, as well as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant which is also occupied by Moscow. Reports suggest that blowing up this dam would lead to catastrophic floods in Kherson and surrounding areas, affecting hundreds and thousands of people.

In his overnight address&nbsp;on Thursday, Ukraine’s Zelensky alleged that the dam on the Dnipro river has been mined by Russia, while Moscow had previously accused Kyiv of firing missiles at the Kakhovka dam. According to Zelensky, if the dam is destroyed it could affect the water supply to much of southern Ukraine and also stop the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant’s supply of cooling water.&nbsp;

“If Russian terrorists blow up this dam, more than 80 settlements, including Kherson, will be in the zone of rapid flooding. Hundreds of thousands of people could be affected,” said Zelensky during the address. Reportedly, he also told the European leaders that after Russia blows up the dam it will blame Ukraine for it.&nbsp;

On the other hand, earlier on Thursday, Vladimir Leontyev, a Kremlin-installed official in Ukraine told Russian TV that Ukraine has fired five missiles against the Kakhovka dam as well as the power station and if it is destroyed it would sever the crucial canal providing water to Crimea.

According to media reports, Ukraine’s presidential adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, on Thursday said, “Russia is preparing a manmade catastrophe.” He alleged that Russia had mined the dam as well as the transformers to flood the lower Dnieper River, and reportedly called it the “Surovikin plan” which involves flooding the territory to stop Ukraine’s counter-offence in the region.&nbsp;

Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of planning to destroy Kakhovka dam: Reports

Zelensky tells EU that Russia is turning Ukraine power grid into 'battlefield'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday (October 19) made an appeal to Ukrainians for moderate use of power as restrictions on electricity supply were due to kick-in on Thursday (October 20).&nbsp;

"Tomorrow it is very important that the consumption is as conscious as possible, then the schedules of stabilisation outages will be shortened," he said.&nbsp;

Government officials and the grid operator Ukrenergo have said that electricity supply will be restricted in the country between 7 am and 11 pm. Street lighting in cities will be limited, a presidential aide said on the Telegram messaging app, adding that if electricity use was not minimised, there would be temporary blackouts.

Zelensky said that Russia has destroyed three Ukrainian energy facilities in last 24 hours. He added that third of his country's power stations have been hit by Russian strikes.

Zelensky said on Wednesday (October 19) that he will never get used to the war that is raging in his country. He was speaking with Canadian broadcaster CTV in an interview. Zelensky said he doesn't allow himself to get used to the pain and killing.

"I'm not ready to get used to us suffering to get used to war… (it) motivates me every day to advance towards the victory. And therefore, I want to remain human, " he said.

Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24. After sustained territorial gain in first few months of the war, Russian forces have had to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counter-offensive.&nbsp;

This week, Russia has carried out intense missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's power and water infrastructure. This has been termed by Ukraine and the West a campaign to intimidate civilians as the winter months approach.

When asked whether he will consider ceding territory to Russia in order to reach a peace deal, Zelensky said that this was not an option.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday (October 16) that heavy fighting is going on around two towns in Ukraine's Donbas region.

"The key hot spots in Donbas are Soledar and Bakhmut," Zelensky said in his nightly video address. "Very heavy fighting is going on there."

The town of Bakhmut has been the next target of Russia's armed forces in their slow advance through the Donetsk region since taking the key industrial towns of Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk in June and July. Soledar lies just to the north of Bakhmut.

In his evening address, President Zelensky made an appeal to Ukraine citizens to bring about reduction in their electricity consumption.

"As a result of the Russian missile terror in some cities and districts of Ukraine, we have to limit the supply of electricity in order to ensure the stable operation of the entire system," Zelensky said, adding that people should reduce electricity consumption from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. (1400GMT to 2000GMT).

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky promised victory over Russia as he marked Ukraine's Defenders Day holiday on Friday (October 14). He delivered a video address on hills outside Ukraine's capital Kyiv. During the address, Zelensky thanked Ukrainian armed forces for the defence of the country. Zelensky said that everything that had been taken from Ukraine would be returned.

"It seems that the current enemy in its evil unites all the enemies of our statehood that we faced before," Zelensky said on the wooded hills outside the village of Vitachyv, site of an historic military outpost overlooking the Dnipro River.

"By defeating this enemy, we will respond to all enemies who encroached on Ukraine - on those who lived, who live and who will live on our land. This will be a victory for all our people. This will be a victory for the Armed Forces of Ukraine."
