<p>“Unless we get evidence beyond reasonable doubt, we cannot just say this or that,” he said, adding that “we will get the answer. It's a matter of time.”</p>

<p>Talking to the Financial Times, Tedros revealed that they are “pressing China to give full access, and we are asking countries to raise it during their bilateral meetings — [and urge Beijing] to co-operate.”</p>

<p>“We have already asked in writing to give us information. . . And [are] also willing to send a team if they allow us to do so.”</p>

<p>Previously, the WHO has been accused of being too lenient with China and its initial slow response to the global pandemic. Critics say China's initial response enabled the global transmission rates to soar beyond the nation's borders.</p>

<p>Next week, world leaders for the first time will discuss pandemic preparedness at high-level meetings during the UN&nbsp;General Assembly gathering in New York.</p>

<p>Bhattacharya said: "What was the CIA’s role – what role did they have and why was there any interest in covering up that fact? If these allegations are correct, that the CIA actually paid off its own analyst to not tell the public or at least not even tell the president that the CIA thought that the virus was as a result of laboratory work – it’s just shocking."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is something the entire world deserves to know; we need absolute transparency in this. This is not a question of national security anymore – this is a question of human rights – it’s a question of honesty," Bhattacharya added.&nbsp;</p>

WHO again asks China for 'full access' to determine Covid's origins: Report

<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday (September 6) warned of concerning trends for Covid ahead of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and called for increased vaccinations and surveillance. Addressing a press conference, WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "We continue to see concerning trends for COVID-19 ahead of the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere."</p>

<p>Ghebreyesus said that deaths were increasing in some parts of the Middle East and Asia, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions were increasing in Europe and hospitalisations were increasing in several regions.</p>

<p>However, the WHO chief pointed out that only 43 countries (out of the 194 member states) were reporting deaths to the agency, and only 20 provided information about hospitalisations.</p>

<h2><strong>'Hundreds of thousands hospitalised for Covid': WHO</strong></h2>

<p>During Wednesday's press conference, WHO's technical lead on Covid Maria Van Kerkhove said the agency estimated that there were hundreds of thousands of people hospitalised for the virus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That is a worry given that when we get to colder months, in some countries, people tend to spend more time indoors together, and viruses that transmit through the air like Covid will take advantage of that," Kerkhove added. She further emphasised the importance of testing as well as vaccination.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Small numbers of the highly mutated BA.2.86 subvariant have also now been detected in 11 countries," Tedros said, adding the WHO was monitoring this variant to assess its transmissibility and potential impact.</p>

<p>"The increase in hospitalisations and deaths shows that COVID-19 is here to stay, and that we will continue to need tools to fight it," he also said.</p>

<h2><strong>WHO's Covid knowledge-sharing platform secures 3 license agreements</strong></h2>

<p>Last week, the WHO's global Covid knowledge-sharing platform called COVID-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP) secured&nbsp;three new licensing agreements to transfer vaccine technologies. According to a report by the news agency AFP on August 29, the C-TAP had until now secured licensing agreements with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) for an antibody test, and with the US National Institute of Health (NIH) for the development of therapeutics, early-stage vaccines and diagnostic tools.</p>

<p>However, the WHO said the number of agreements doubled with the CSIC providing a second one -- this time for a COVID-19 vaccine prototype -- and the University of Chile providing one for a test of Covid antibody neutralisation levels.</p>

<p>"I commend India for their steps in advancing Universal Health Coverage and the Ayushman Bharat scheme which is the world 's largest health assurance initiative," the WHO chief said.</p>

I also thank India G20 Presidency for taking leadership in the Global Digital Health Initiative which will be launched tomorrow," Dr Tedros said.</p>

<p>However, the latest WHO data says that China has overtaken all other countries in the world. In last three months, 315 confirmed mpox cases have been found. However, irregularity in reporting from the government makes it hard to gauge the true scale of the disease.</p>

<p>Countries have shown varying success in containing mpox, which is less contagious than Covid-19 but has affected thousands across the world. The success in controlling mpox outbreak is often attributed to proactive measures like vaccination. A report in South China Morning Post (SCMP) has suggested that action taken by Chinese government leaves a lot to be desired.</p>

In a statement, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said, "There is currently one confirmed case in the UK in an individual with no recent travel history, which suggests a degree of community transmission within the UK."</p>

<p>"The newly identified variant has a high number of mutations and is genomically distant from both its likely ancestor, BA.2, and from currently circulating XBB-derived variants," the statement added. The UKHSA designated the variant as V-23AUG-01 for monitoring.</p>

<p>Traditional medicines are a "first port of call for millions of people worldwide", the UN health agency said, with the talks in India bringing together policymakers and academics&nbsp;aiming to "mobilise political commitment and evidence-based action" towards them.</p>

<p>"WHO&nbsp;is working to build the evidence and data to inform policies, standards and regulations for the safe, cost-effective and equitable use of traditional medicine",&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said as he opened the summit.</p>

<p>Traditional medicine could bridge healthcare "access gaps", but was of value only if used "appropriately, effectively, and above all, safely based on the latest scientific evidence", Tedros warned earlier.</p>

<p>But the global health body has come under fire from online critics&nbsp;who&nbsp;accused it of providing scientific validation to pseudoscience after it asked followers in a post if they had used a range of treatments, including homoeopathy and naturopathy.</p>

<p>The&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;later said in a post on the social media platform X that it had heard the "concerns" and agreed its "message could have been better articulated".</p>

<p>The summit, set to become a regular event, follows the opening last year of a&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;Global Centre for Traditional Medicine, also in India's Gujarat state.</p>

<h2><strong>Lack of regulatory oversight</strong></h2>

<p>While traditional medicines are widely used in some parts of the world, they also face fierce criticism.</p>

<p>The UN health agency defines traditional medicine as the knowledge, skills and practices used over time to maintain health and prevent, diagnose and treat physical and mental illness.</p>

<p>But many traditional treatments have no proven scientific value and conservationists say the industry drives a rampant trade in endangered animals -- including tigers, rhinos and pangolins -- threatening the existence of entire species.</p>

<p>Use of homemade remedies soared during the Covid-19 pandemic, including a green herbal drink based on Artemisia that was promoted by Madagascar's president as a cure.</p>

<p>The plant has a proven efficacy in malaria treatment, but its use to combat Covid was widely scorned by many doctors.</p>

<p>In China, traditional medicine has a distinguished history, but top European medical bodies have previously demanded it be subject to the same regulatory oversight as conventional medical methods.</p>

<p>"Advancing science on traditional medicine should be held to the same rigorous standards as in other fields of health,"&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;research chief John Reeder said in a statement.</p>

<p>Of the&nbsp;WHO's 194 member states, 170 acknowledged their use of traditional and complementary medicine since 2018, but only 124 reported having laws or regulations for the use of herbal medicines -- while only half had a national policy on such methods and medicines.</p>

<p>"Natural doesn't always mean safe, and centuries of use are not a guarantee of efficacy; therefore, scientific method and process must be applied to provide the rigorous evidence required," the&nbsp;WHO&nbsp;said.</p>

<p>About 40 per cent of approved pharmaceutical products currently in use derive from a "natural product basis", according to the&nbsp;WHO, which cited "landmark drugs" that derive from traditional medicine, including aspirin, drawing on formulations using willow tree bark.</p>

The Google-owned video-sharing&nbsp;platform said in an attempt to tackle&nbsp;medical misinformation on COVID-19, vaccines, reproductive health,&nbsp;harmful substances, and more, it will remove content that&nbsp;contradicts local health authorities or the World Health Organization (WHO).</p>

<p>The platform said its basic framework will aim to remove three types&nbsp;of content misinformation viz. prevention, treatment and denial.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Moving forward, YouTube will streamline dozens of our existing medical misinformation guidelines to fall under three categories – Prevention, Treatment, and Denial. These policies will apply to specific health conditions, treatments, and substances where content contradicts local health authorities or the World Health Organization (WHO)," YouTube said in a blog post on August 15.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Under denial misinformation, YouTube said, “It will remove content that disputes the existence of specific health conditions. This covers content that denies people have died from COVID-19.”&nbsp;</p>

The company said it is its mission to&nbsp;make sure that individuals can easily find&nbsp;high-quality content from credible health sources when they turn to YouTube for cancer-related research.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Starting today and ramping up in the coming weeks, we will begin removing content that promotes cancer treatments proven to be harmful or ineffective, or content that discourages viewers from seeking professional medical treatment," the blog post read.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Variant better at evading body's immune system: WHO&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Professor of operational research at University College London, Christina Pagel, said that although the variant has been increasing in prevalence and seems to be better at evading the body's immune system which permits it to outcompete other variants, there is a lack of evidence that it can cause more severe disease.</p>

<p>“It will probably cause a wave of more cases and all the problems that brings – [such as] more hospitalisations and Long Covid – but [there is] no reason at the moment to think [that will be] worse than previous waves this year,” she stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pagel stated that the waning immunity due to previous infections or vaccinations may mean that the wave of EG.5 took longer to peak and hence, it may be larger.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) last week published an update which suggested EG.5, and more specifically its subvariant EG5.1 accounts for around 15 per cent of sequenced COVID-19 cases in England.</p>

<p>Deputy director of UKHSA, Dr Meera Chand, said that the new variants' emergence is not unexpected. “UKHSA continues to analyse available data relating to Sars-CoV-2 variants in the UK and abroad. EG.5.1 was designated as a variant on 31 July 2023 due to continued growth internationally and presence in the UK, allowing us to monitor it through our routine surveillance processes," she said.</p>

<p>“Vaccination remains our best defence against future Covid-19 waves, so it is still as important as ever that people come to take up all the doses for which they are eligible as soon as possible," added Chand.&nbsp;</p>

WHO designates new Covid strain ‘Eris’ as 'variant of interest' amid global surge in cases

<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert over an India-made cough syrup that was sold in Iraq after it was found contaminated and deemed “not safe for use”.</p>

<p>The alert came after a sample of the common cold syrup, ‘Cold Out’, was obtained from a location in Iraq and submitted for laboratory analysis.</p>

<p>"The sample was found to contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol (0.25%) and ethylene glycol (2.1%) as contaminants. The acceptable safety limit for both ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol is no more than 0.10%," the health body said.</p>

<p>The WHO said that diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal.</p>

<p>The syrup was manufactured by Fourrts (India) Laboratories Pvt. Ltd, a Chennai-based plant, and the product is stated to be manufactured for Dabilife Pharma Pvt. Ltd. India, the WHO said in a statement.</p>

<p>"To date, the stated manufacturer and the marketer have not provided guarantees to WHO on the safety and quality of the product," the alert said.</p>

<p>It said that this syrup may have marketing authorisations in other countries or regions.</p>

<h2><strong>Toxic chemical&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>"The substandard batch of the product is unsafe and its use, especially in children, may result in serious injury or death," the alert warned.</p>

<p>"Toxic effects can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death," the WHO said.</p>

<p>The Iraqi officials have not yet found any deaths related to poisonous medications, but last week the Ministry of Health&nbsp;said that the medicine failed separate tests conducted by Iraqi authorities and that products circulating in the market were being confiscated.</p>

<h2><strong>Fifth time&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>This is the fifth time that contaminated syrups have been tied to an Indian manufacturer.</p>

<p>Cases of Indian-made tainted cold syrups have been reported in Indonesia,&nbsp;Gambia, Uzbekistan and&nbsp;Cameroon, and have killed about 300 children in the past year, reports Bloomberg.</p>

<p>The Indian manufacturer Marion Biotech, which had exported the syrups to Uzbekistan, had its drug license cancelled by the Uttar Pradesh government.</p>

<p>The company involved in Gambia, Maiden Pharmaceuticals, denied that its drugs were responsible for the deaths in the country. Later, tests by an Indian government laboratory found no toxins in the syrup.</p>

<p>According to Reuters, DCGI (Drugs Controller General of India) chief VG Somani wrote to WHO, saying the samples of Maiden's syrup had not been contaminated with ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol.</p>

<p>As soaring temperatures continue to bake swathes of North America and Europe this month, researchers, on Tuesday (July 25) confirm what <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/temperatures-reach-new-highs-world-witnesses-record-breaking-heat-616853">many speculated</a>, that this weather phenomenon would be “virtually impossible” without human-induced climate change.&nbsp;</p>

<p>From record-breaking temperatures in the United States to life-threatening wildfires burning parts of Europe, we only have ourselves (and our greenhouse gas emissions) to blame as July 2023 may be the hottest month for the planet.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Record-breaking temperatures ‘virtually impossible’ without climate change</strong></h2>

<p>A new rapid analysis of the scorching temperatures was published by an international team of scientists at the World Weather Attribution which found that the heatwaves in parts of Europe and North America would have been impossible if it was not for human-induced climate change.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“European and North American temperatures would have been virtually impossible without the effects of climate change,” Izidine Pinto of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, one of the authors, told journalists, on Tuesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The research also noted that climate change has also caused recent record-setting heatwaves in China, which are to become 50 times “more likely,” when compared to previous years. This comes as the country witnessed its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-records-522-celsius-temperature-in-arid-northwest-616575">record-setting</a> temperature of 52.2 degrees Celsius in Sanbao township in Xinjiang’s Turpan Depression.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists also noted how the extreme weather events witnessed in July across the world would have been “extremely rare” if it was not for climate change.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rise in greenhouse gas concentrations made the European heatwave 2.5 degrees Celsius hotter than it would have been. They also helped worsen North American heatwaves by two degrees Celsius and also in China by one degree Celsius.&nbsp;<br />

This comes nearly a week after NASA climatologist Gavin Schmidt told reporters how July 2023 is not only on track to become the hottest month since records began but also the hottest in “hundreds, if not thousands, of years.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Situation to worsen</strong></h2>

<p>“The role of climate change is absolutely overwhelming,” said climate scientist Friederike Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, Imperial College London.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The weather data collected was used to run through computer model simulations to compare today’s climate with that of the past years. Otto and her colleagues at the WWA said they focused on periods when “the heat was most dangerous in each region.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Otto, in the past, it would have been “basically impossible” to witness these record-breaking temperatures and heatwaves happening around the same time. But at the same time, “It’s not surprising from a climatological point of view, that these events are happening at the same time,” said the researcher.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The findings were published using peer-reviewed methods but the study has yet to undergo the formal academic review process.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Researchers from Imperial College London, the Dutch National Weather Service and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, estimated that these severe heatwaves can now be expected once every 15 years in North America, every decade in southern Europe and every five years in China.</p>

<p>Scientists also expect these prolonged periods of extreme heat would be as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/extreme-heatwaves-to-continue-through-august-wmo-adviser-says-618150">frequent</a> as every two to five years if the global temperatures rise over two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is expected to happen around 30 years from now unless countries fulfil their Paris Agreement and cut down emissions. Currently, the average temperatures are estimated to have risen by over 1.1 degrees Celsius.</p>

<h2><strong>About the cause</strong></h2>

<p>These effects have largely been attributed to the generation of greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels. “As long as we keep burning fossil fuels we will see more and more of these extremes,” Otto. She added, “I don’t think there’s any stronger evidence that any science has ever presented for a scientific question.”</p>

<p>Scientists also noted that while the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/un-declares-onset-of-el-nino-says-itll-break-temperature-records-611836">El Nino weather pattern</a> may have contributed to the additional heat in some regions, these extreme events cannot solely be attributed to the phenomenon, as the weather pattern is not expected to strengthen until later on in the year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They added that these heatwaves will become increasingly likely if measures to slash emissions are not taken.</p>

<h2><strong>Impact and calls for urgent measures</strong></h2>

<p>Recent record-breaking temperatures have also directly impacted human health, caused large-scale crop damage and livestock losses, said the scientists. These adverse effects of heatwaves seen in North America, southern Europe and China have accelerated the need for heat preparedness, they added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A study published, earlier this month, in the journal Nature Medicine found that Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain saw the highest number of deaths, according to population size, when Europe was hit by the sweltering heatwaves last summer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also estimated that more than 61,600 people may have died from heat-related causes across 35 European countries between late May to early September 2022, suggesting that the countries’ heat preparedness efforts fell fatally short.</p>

<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) said they are particularly concerned about people with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and asthma during the heatwaves in Europe and the US.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last week, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/wmo-warns-about-risk-of-heart-attacks-deaths-amid-intensifying-heatwaves-617213">World Meteorological Organization (WMO)</a> issued a warning about a high risk of deaths due to the extreme weather and said such events will only intensify and the world needs to be better prepared for them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While we are focusing on the maximum day temperatures, it is the high overnight minimum temperatures that we should be worried about as they have the “biggest health risks”, particularly for vulnerable populations, said WMO senior extreme heat advisor, John Nairn, on July 18.&nbsp;</p>

Record-breaking temperatures ‘virtually impossible’ without climate change A new rapid analysis of the scorching temperatures was published by an international team of scientists at the World Weather Attribution which found that the heatwaves in parts of Europe and North America would have been impossible if it was not for human-induced climate change. “European and North American temperatures would have been virtually impossible without the effects of climate change,” Izidine Pinto of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, one of the authors, told journalists, on Tuesday. The research also noted that climate change has also caused recent record-setting heatwaves in China, which are to become 50 times “more likely,” when compared to previous years. This comes as the country witnessed its record-setting temperature of 52.2 degrees Celsius in Sanbao township in Xinjiang’s Turpan Depression. Scientists also noted how the extreme weather events witnessed in July across the world would have been “extremely rare” if it was not for climate change. The rise in greenhouse gas concentrations made the European heatwave 2.5 degrees Celsius hotter than it would have been. They also helped worsen North American heatwaves by two degrees Celsius and also in China by one degree Celsius. This comes nearly a week after NASA climatologist Gavin Schmidt told reporters how July 2023 is not only on track to become the hottest month since records began but also the hottest in “hundreds, if not thousands, of years.” Situation to worsen “The role of climate change is absolutely overwhelming,” said climate scientist Friederike Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, Imperial College London. The weather data collected was used to run through computer model simulations to compare today’s climate with that of the past years. Otto and her colleagues at the WWA said they focused on periods when “the heat was most dangerous in each region.” According to Otto, in the past, it would have been “basically impossible” to witness these record-breaking temperatures and heatwaves happening around the same time. But at the same time, “It’s not surprising from a climatological point of view, that these events are happening at the same time,” said the researcher. The findings were published using peer-reviewed methods but the study has yet to undergo the formal academic review process. Researchers from Imperial College London, the Dutch National Weather Service and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, estimated that these severe heatwaves can now be expected once every 15 years in North America, every decade in southern Europe and every five years in China. Scientists also expect these prolonged periods of extreme heat would be as frequent as every two to five years if the global temperatures rise over two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This is expected to happen around 30 years from now unless countries fulfil their Paris Agreement and cut down emissions. Currently, the average temperatures are estimated to have risen by over 1.1 degrees Celsius. About the cause These effects have largely been attributed to the generation of greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels. “As long as we keep burning fossil fuels we will see more and more of these extremes,” Otto. She added, “I don’t think there’s any stronger evidence that any science has ever presented for a scientific question.” Scientists also noted that while the El Nino weather pattern may have contributed to the additional heat in some regions, these extreme events cannot solely be attributed to the phenomenon, as the weather pattern is not expected to strengthen until later on in the year. They added that these heatwaves will become increasingly likely if measures to slash emissions are not taken. Impact and calls for urgent measures Recent record-breaking temperatures have also directly impacted human health, caused large-scale crop damage and livestock losses, said the scientists. These adverse effects of heatwaves seen in North America, southern Europe and China have accelerated the need for heat preparedness, they added. A study published, earlier this month, in the journal Nature Medicine found that Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain saw the highest number of deaths, according to population size, when Europe was hit by the sweltering heatwaves last summer. It also estimated that more than 61,600 people may have died from heat-related causes across 35 European countries between late May to early September 2022, suggesting that the countries’ heat preparedness efforts fell fatally short. 'Unusual cat deaths' in Poland attributed to bird flu: WHO

<p>The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a recommendation for cat and dog owners to keep their pets indoors in response to a surge in avian influenza cases worldwide. This guidance comes after 24 cats tested positive for the virus in Poland.</p>

<h2><strong>EFSA recommendation</strong></h2>

<p>To prevent exposure, EFSA has advised pet owners to avoid contact between domestic cats, dogs, and other carnivorous pets with dead or sick animals.</p>

<p>"Possible measures are keeping dogs on a leash, and confining cats indoors in areas where extensive circulation of HPAI [highly pathogenic avian influenza] viruses in wild birds has been confirmed," it said in a bulletin.</p>

<p>The EFSA's recommendation serves as a precautionary measure to protect pets from avian influenza and mitigate the risk of further transmission.</p>

<p>Italy has reported infections in five dogs and one cat in recent weeks, while Poland has witnessed 24 cases in domestic cats across various regions since June 10.</p>

<h2><strong>A 'bird flu' vaccine for birds</strong></h2>

<p>In response to the escalating cases of bird flu, in April, the United States begun testing several vaccine candidates for potential use in birds.</p>

<p>As per AFP, France aims to commence poultry vaccination as early as autumn this year.</p>

<p>However, Christine Middlemiss, the UK's chief veterinary officer, cautioned that vaccination alone is not a definitive solution as the virus continually evolves. In his words, vaccinating poultry was not a "a silver bullet because the virus changes constantly."</p>

<h2><strong>Bird flu and humans</strong></h2>

<p>Avian influenza, caused by the H5N1 virus, had previously been mostly limited to seasonal outbreaks since its emergence in 1996. However, in mid-2021, a significant change occurred, making the group of viruses much more infectious, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating centre that studies influenza in animals.</p>

<p>JECFA concluded that the available data did not provide sufficient reason to change the previously established acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0-40 mg/kg body weight for aspartame.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The committee therefore reaffirmed that it is safe for a person to consume within this limit per day. For example, with a can of diet soft drink containing 200 or 300 mg of aspartame, an adult weighing 70kg would need to consume more than 9–14 cans per day to exceed the acceptable daily intake, assuming no other intake from other food sources," the statement read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Aspartame, used in products from Coca-Cola diet sodas to Mars' Extra chewing gum and some Snapple drinks, will be listed in July as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" for the first time by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the World Health Organization's (WHO) cancer research arm, the sources said.</p>

<p>The IARC ruling, finalised earlier this month after a meeting of the group's external experts, is intended to assess whether something is a potential hazard or not, based on all the published evidence.</p>

<p>It does not take into account how much of a product a person can safely consume. This advice for individuals comes from a separate WHO expert committee on food additives, known as JECFA (the Joint WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization's Expert Committee on Food Additives), alongside determinations from national regulators.</p>

<p>However, similar IARC rulings in the past for different substances have raised concerns among consumers about their use, led to lawsuits, and pressured manufacturers to recreate recipes and swap to alternatives. That has led to criticism that the IARC's assessments can be confusing to the public.</p>

<p>JECFA, the WHO committee on additives, is also reviewing aspartame use this year. Its meeting began at the end of June and it is due to announce its findings on the same day that the IARC makes public its decision – on July 14.</p>

<p>Since 1981, JECFA has said aspartame is safe to consume within accepted daily limits. For example, an adult weighing 60 kg (132 pounds) would have to drink between 12 and 36 cans of diet soda – depending on the amount of aspartame in the beverage – every day to be at risk. Its view has been widely shared by national regulators, including in the United States and Europe.</p>

<p>An IARC spokesperson said both the IARC and JECFA committees' findings were confidential until July, but added they were "complementary", with IARC's conclusion representing "the first fundamental step to understand carcinogenicity". The additives committee "conducts risk assessment, which determines the probability of a specific type of harm (e.g., cancer) to occur under certain conditions and levels of exposure."</p>

<p>However, industry and regulators fear that holding both processes at around the same time could be confusing, according to letters from U.S. and Japanese regulators seen by Reuters.</p>

<p>"We kindly ask both bodies to coordinate their efforts in reviewing aspartame to avoid any confusion or concerns among the public," Nozomi Tomita, an official from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, wrote in a letter dated March 27 to WHO's deputy director general, Zsuzsanna Jakab.</p>

<p>The letter also called for the conclusions of both bodies to be released on the same day, as is now happening. The Japanese mission in Geneva, where the WHO is based, did not respond to a request for comment.</p>

<h2><strong>Debate&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The IARC's rulings can have a huge impact. In 2015, its committee concluded that glyphosate is "probably carcinogenic". Years later, even as other bodies like the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) contested this, companies were still feeling the effects of the decision. Germany’s Bayer in 2021 lost its third appeal against U.S. court verdicts that awarded damages to customers blaming their cancers on the use of its glyphosate-based weed-killers.</p>

<p>The IARC's decisions have also faced criticism for sparking needless alarm over hard-to-avoid substances or situations. It has previously put working overnight and consuming red meat into its "probably cancer-causing" class, and using mobile phones as "possibly cancer-causing", similar to aspartame.</p>

<p>"IARC is not a food safety body and their review of aspartame is not scientifically comprehensive and is based heavily on widely discredited research," Frances Hunt-Wood, the secretary general of the International Sweeteners Association (ISA), said.</p>

<p>The body, whose members include Mars Wrigley, a Coca-Cola unit and Cargill, said it had "serious concerns with the IARC review, which may mislead consumers".</p>

<p>The International Council of Beverages Associations' executive director Kate Loatman said public health authorities should be "deeply concerned" by the "leaked opinion", and also warned it "could needlessly mislead consumers into consuming more sugar rather than choosing safe no-and low-sugar options."</p>

<p>Aspartame has been extensively studied for years. Last year, an observational study in France among 100,000 adults showed that people who consumed larger amounts of artificial sweeteners – including aspartame – had a slightly higher cancer risk.</p>

<p>It followed a study from the Ramazzini Institute in Italy in the early 2000s, which reported that some cancers in mice and rats were linked to aspartame.</p>

<p>However, the first study could not prove that aspartame caused the increased cancer risk, and questions have been raised about the methodology of the second study, including by EFSA, which assessed it.</p>

<p>Aspartame is authorised for use globally by regulators who have reviewed all the available evidence, and major food and beverage makers have for decades defended their use of the ingredient. The IARC said it had assessed 1,300 studies in its June review.</p>

<p>Recent recipe tweaks by soft drinks giant Pepsico demonstrate the struggle the industry has when it comes to balancing taste preferences with health concerns. Pepsico removed aspartame from sodas in 2015, bringing it back a year later, only to remove it again in 2020.</p>

<p>The company, Marion Biotech, bought the ingredient — propylene glycol (PG) — from trader Maya Chemtech India, as reported by Reuters. But Maya did not have a licence to sell pharmaceutical-grade materials and "dealt in industrial-grade only," according to a source at the firm with knowledge of the Marion investigation.</p>

<p>"We did not know Marion was going to use it to make cough syrups," said the person, who declined to be identified while the case is investigated. "We are not told where our material is used."</p>

<p>The two sources said the syrup was made with industrial-grade PG, a toxic material widely used in liquid detergents, antifreeze, paints or coatings, and to enhance the effectiveness of pesticides.</p>

<p>"Marion bought commercial-grade propylene glycol," said a second source, an investigator, who declined to be named while the inquiry is ongoing.</p>

<p>"They were supposed to take Indian Pharmacopoeia-grade," the source added, referring to national standards for the composition of pharmaceutical products.</p>

<p>Marion also did not test the ingredient before using it in the syrups it sold to Uzbekistan, the investigator said.</p>

<p>India's drugs and cosmetics rules say manufacturers are responsible to ensure the safety of the ingredients they use.</p>

<p>Maya is not facing charges, according to the company source, but the investigation is ongoing. Deepak Sharma, an Assistant Drugs Controller for the national capital territory of Delhi, where Maya is based, declined to comment, saying the case was being investigated by federal drugs authorities.</p>

<p>Marion, which says it deals in pharmaceuticals, herbal and cosmetics products, previously denied any wrongdoing. Neither the company nor India's drug regulator or health ministry responded to requests for comment.</p>

<p>An analysis last year by Uzbekistan's health ministry showed the Marion-made cough syrups, Ambronol and DOK-1 Max, contained unacceptable amounts of toxins diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG), used in products that are not for human consumption.</p>

<p>Uzbekistan in January arrested four people in relation to the 19 deaths, including two executives at a company that imported the Marion drugs. Reuters could not establish the status of the case.</p>

<p>Uzbekistan's health ministry did not respond to a question on possible penalties there.</p>

<h2>'Spurious and adulterated'</h2>

<p>DEG and EG have been used by unscrupulous actors as a substitute for propylene glycol because they are cheaper, according to pharmaceutical manufacturing experts.</p>

<p>The World Health Organization told Reuters earlier this month its working theory is that in 2021, when prices of propylene glycol spiked, one or more suppliers mixed the cheaper toxic liquids with the legitimate chemical.</p>

<p>Asked to comment on the ingredients used by Marion, a WHO spokesperson said, "It is important that product manufacturers only use appropriately qualified suppliers."</p>

<p>Tests in January by an Indian government laboratory found 22 samples of Marion-made syrups were "adulterated and spurious," the country's drug controller said in March.</p>

<p>Authorities in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where Marion is based, cancelled Marion's licence in March. Police arrested three of its employees and issued warrants for the arrest of two directors. The three employees have since been released on bail, said Uttar Pradesh police officer Vijay Kumar.</p>

<p>One of them, operations head Tuhin Bhattacharya, said he had stopped working for Marion, which Reuters could not verify. Reuters could not contact the other two, chemists Mool Singh and Atul Rawat, or their lawyers.</p>

<p>A lawyer for the two Marion directors told the state's Allahabad High Court in April that the drugs had been found "not of standard quality" but not adulterated, adding that the directors had not committed any offence in India as the drugs were meant exclusively for export, according to a court order seen by Reuters.</p>

<p>The court barred police from arresting the directors, Jaya Jain and Sachin Jain unless they had been convicted. Their lawyer, Rohan Gupta, did not respond; Reuters could not reach the directors.</p>

<p>India's drug regulator ordered the country's drugmakers not to buy PG from Maya in March, Reuters has reported.</p>

<p>Besides the deaths in Uzbekistan, at least 70 children died in Gambia last year after taking cough syrups made by another company in India that were found to be contaminated with the toxins, and tainted cough syrups made in Indonesia were linked to the deaths of more than 200 children there.</p>

<p>The deaths prompted an international inquiry into the pharmaceutical supply chain.</p>

<p>International standards allow only trace amounts of EG and DEG in pharmaceutical-grade propylene glycol. Limits for the industrial or commercial grade version are not as stringent, because they are not supposed to be ingested by humans.</p>

<p>The toxins were found in cough syrups exported to Gambia by the other Indian company, Maiden Pharmaceuticals. The WHO linked these syrups to the children's deaths; Maiden has denied any wrongdoing.</p>

<p>Gambia told India's drug regulator in June that from July 1 it would make it mandatory for all pharmaceutical products from India to be inspected and tested in India, at the cost of the Indian exporter, prior to shipment -- the first known restrictions on national exports following the deaths linked to Indian-made syrups.</p>

WHO announces end of deadly Marburg virus outbreak in Equatorial Guinea

Investigators' theories suggest that the virus traveled from bats to humans but, the speculations of it being grown in a Wuhan lab stay in the air.

<p>Owing to a deadly fungal outbreak, the authorities in the US and Mexico have requested the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency of international concern. The request was conveyed after the US&nbsp;Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) informed that two people&nbsp;who underwent surgeries involving epidural anaesthesia, died of meningitis.</p>

<p>Recruiters reportedly lured patients from multiple countries and 24 US states to two facilities named&nbsp;River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3 in Mexico for cosmetic operations that may have exposed them to the fungus. Both facilities have been shut down by the authorities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The CDC is currently monitoring over 400 people who may have visited the facilitirs&nbsp;to avail the services. They have also requested others who had surgeries at either of the two facilities to get evaluated, even if they are currently asymptomatic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"All have been notified, and are under evaluation, and we were working with transplant centers and other partners to properly manage these patients who had these organs transplanted into their bodies," CDC's Dallas Smith was quoted as saying by CBS.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Smith, the medications used during anaesthesia may have been contaminated in the&nbsp;epidural itself or in other medications such as morphine that are added in&nbsp;conjunction with the surgeries.</p>

<p>"There's these agents that act as recruiters in the U.S. for patients, they link US patients to these clinics to receive certain care, and certain procedures like cosmetic procedures," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Because patients in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Colombia were on the exposed list, we wanted to make sure these countries were aware, and provide such situational awareness, through a public health emergency of international concern."</p>

<h2><strong>WHO cannot immediately approve the request</strong></h2>

<p>Despite the requests from the two countries, WHO cannot immediately declare&nbsp;a public health emergency. To do so, a WHO committee will have to convene and decide on the severity of the outbreak and if it is necessary&nbsp;to sound the bugle. Notably, the global health body receives such alerts in abundance every day but not all end up reaching that stage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"[We] are notified of hundreds of events every day and assess each one," WHO spokesperson Margaret Ann Haris said in an email.</p>

The request was conveyed after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) informed that two people who underwent surgeries involving epidural anaesthesia, died of meningitis. Recruiters reportedly lured patients from multiple countries and 24 US states to two facilities named River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3 in Mexico for cosmetic operations that may have exposed them to the fungus. Both facilities have been shut down by the authorities. The CDC is currently monitoring over 400 people who may have visited the facilitirs to avail the services. They have also requested others who had surgeries at either of the two facilities to get evaluated, even if they are currently asymptomatic. "All have been notified, and are under evaluation, and we were working with transplant centers and other partners to properly manage these patients who had these organs transplanted into their bodies," CDC's Dallas Smith was quoted as saying by CBS. "There's these agents that act as recruiters in the U.S. for patients, they link US patients to these clinics to receive certain care, and certain procedures like cosmetic procedures," he said. "Because patients in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Colombia were on the exposed list, we wanted to make sure these countries were aware, and provide such situational awareness, through a public health emergency of international concern." <p>The Chinese government welcomed the WHO's decision to exclude Taiwan from its annual assembly. In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, "This fully shows that the one-China principle is the aspiration of the people and the trend of the times in the international community and cannot be challenged in any way."</p>

<p>The ministry added that before the opening of the conference, nearly 100 countries expressed their adherence to the one-China principle and their opposition to Taiwan's participation in the assembly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"China also urges certain countries not to pretend to be confused, stop politicising the health issue, stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of the Taiwan issue, and stop the erroneous practice of using 'Taiwan to control China'," the ministry added.</p>

<h2><strong>Exclusion poses significant threat to global health: Taiwan's health minister</strong></h2>

<p>Taiwan's Health Minister Hsueh Jui-yuan slammed&nbsp;the WHO's decision by saying that his country's exclusion from the UN health agency's annual assembly posed a significant threat to global health.</p>

<p>"Excluding Taiwan from WHO not only jeopardises the right to health of the 23.5 million people of Taiwan, it also seriously undermines WHO's efforts to achieve health for all," Jui-yuan said on Sunday at an event hosted by the Geneva Press Club, news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jui-yuan warned that leaving the self-ruled island out in the cold hampered the swift and efficient sharing of information that would be needed to prevent or more efficiently respond to the next pandemic threat.</p>

<p>"I am afraid that Taiwan will become the gap of the next pandemic," the health minister added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US mission in Geneva too criticised the WHO's decision by saying Taiwan's exclusion "undermines inclusive global public health cooperation led by WHO."</p>

<p>Taiwan was expelled from the WHO in 1972, a year after it lost the "China" seat at the UN to the People's Republic of China. But Taiwan was allowed to attend the agency's top annual meetings between 2009 and 2016 as an observer when relations with China were warmer.</p>

<p>However, it has been blocked from attending the annual assembly in recent years by China and the Chinese government staunchly opposed efforts to include Taiwan as a WHA observer.&nbsp;</p>
