Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday morning. He contracted the virus for the very first time since the pandemic began in the year 2020.

“I tested positive for COVID-19 for the first time this morning,” Lee said on Facebook, where he posted a photo of a positive antigen rapid test. “I am generally feeling ok, but my doctors have advised me to self-isolate until I am asymptomatic.”

He further informed that he contracted the virus after his recent work trips and that the doctors had prescribed the Paxlovid antiviral medication because of his age.

"This comes after my recent work trips. Doctors have also prescribed me Paxlovid, an antiviral medication, because of my age," he said.

Lee was on an official visit to South Africa from May 14 to 16, and Kenya from May 17 to 19. He also attended the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Indonesia from May 10 to 11.

The 71-year-old added that his last COVID-19 vaccine booster dose inoculation was in November. He urged the citizens of his country to keep their vaccinations up to date in order to reduce the risk of severe illness.

"My most recent COVID-19 vaccine booster was in November. Please keep your vaccinations up-to-date, as it reduces the risk of severe illness. As COVID-19 remains endemic in Singapore, we must continue to keep ourselves safe and healthy," he wrote.

The announcement was made after the independent emergency committee of WHO held its 15th meeting on the Covid crisis during which they agreed that the crisis did not merit the highest level of alert of the organisation any longer.&nbsp;

However, Tedros warned that the announcement did not mean the threat was over, as he cautioned people about the chances of reinstating the emergency status if the situation changes.&nbsp;

"However, that does not mean COVID-19 is over as a global health threat," Ghebreyesus said.&nbsp;

"The worst thing any country could do now is to use this news as a reason to let down its guard, to dismantle the systems it has built, or to send the message to its people that Covid-19 is nothing to worry about," he stated.&nbsp;

But now World Health Organisation has clearly said that artificial sweeteners do not provide long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children.

The WHO has released a new guideline in accordance to which artificial sweeteners are not just without benefits but they also increase the risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even death.

Francesco Branca, Director for Nutrition and Food Safety at WHO said that people need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake.

"Replacing free sugars with non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) does not help with weight control in the long term. People need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake, such as consuming food with naturally occurring sugars, like fruit, or unsweetened food and beverages,” said Branca.

"NSS are not essential dietary factors and have no nutritional value. People should reduce the sweetness of the diet altogether, starting early in life, to improve their health."

Branca was quoted on the official website of WHO.

Common NSS include aspartame, advantame, sucralose, saccharin, neotame, acesulfame K, cyclamates, stevia and stevia derivatives.

However, WHO noted that its recommendation does not apply to personal care and hygiene product that contain non-sugar sweeteners (NSS). This means that NSS in products like skin cream, toothpaste, medications or low-calorie sugars and sugar alcohols (polyols) do not pose the threat WHO has warned about.

"Because the link observed in the evidence between NSS and disease outcomes might be confounded by baseline characteristics of study participants and complicated patterns of NSS use, the recommendation has been assessed as conditional, following WHO processes for developing guidelines. This signals that policy decisions based on this recommendation may require substantive discussion in specific country contexts, linked for example to the extent of consumption in different age groups," says WHO on its website.

Using sugar substitutes for weight loss? WHO has a warning for you

New highly effective weight loss drugs such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy are not a "silver bullet"&nbsp;for addressing the rapid rise in global obesity rates, the World Health Organization’s nutrition chief told Reuters, as the agency conducts its first review of obesity management guidelines in more than 20 years.

The global health body is first revising guidelines for treating children and adolescents with obesity, and will then update recommendations for adults, said Francesco Branca, WHO director of nutrition and food safety.

The WHO last issued global guidelines on the topic in 2000, which are used as a blueprint for countries without the resources to draft their own plans.

As part of the work, the WHO has commissioned the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, in Milan, Italy, to assess the evidence for the use of all drugs for children and adolescents – from older options like GSK's Xenical to newer, more effective treatments like Wegovy and Eli Lilly and Co’s Mounjaro, Branca told Reuters.

"The kind of communication that has been done around these drugs – ‘We’ve found a solution’ – that’s wrong,"&nbsp;said Branca. Drugs for obesity are important but must be “part of a comprehensive approach,” he said.

"This is not a silver bullet."

Branca said that other interventions, including diet and exercise, remain critical to help manage obesity. The latest WHO data shows that the percentage of children and adolescents aged five to 19 who are obese or overweight has risen to just over 18 per cent in 2016 from just four per cent in 1975, and this now represents more than 340 million people.

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Wegovy and Mounjaro were originally developed for type 2 diabetes to help control blood glucose. More recently, they have been shown to help people lose around 15 per cent&nbsp;of their body weight, capturing the attention of patients, investors and even celebrities.

Part of a class of drugs known as GLP-1 agonists, they are given by a weekly injection and work by affecting hunger signals to the brain and slowing the rate at which a person’s stomach empties, making them feel full longer.

Studies suggest people are likely to have to take drugs for the rest of their lives to keep the weight off.

Wegovy is approved for weight loss in the United States and Europe, while Mounjaro is expected to receive US&nbsp;approval later this year. The enormous demand for the drugs is expected to be worth $100 billion in annual sales within a decade, with as many as 10 different drugs on the market.

US&nbsp;medical groups are also reviewing their obesity treatment guidelines to consider the best use of Wegovy and similar drugs, with some specialists advocating broad use while others recommend prioritising them for high-risk patients with health conditions, like diabetes or heart disease, that are exacerbated by excess weight.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended using such medicines in children age 12 or older with obesity, even though the long-term impacts have yet to be studied.&nbsp;

More robust&nbsp;

The WHO said its revised guidelines will be based on more robust methodology than previous iterations and include up-to-the-minute science. The first draft of the new management guidelines for children and adolescents are expected by the end of this year.

Branca said the researchers at Mario Negri, as well as other institutions working on the guidelines, had been extensively vetted to avoid conflict of interest concerns.

Novo Nordisk was suspended earlier this year from the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry for its marketing practices, such as alleged funding of health professionals and providing training that the association alleged was intended to promote its drug.

“We really screen the potential conflicts of interest,” said Branca.

He described obesity as a "rising epidemic".

"There are multiple reasons why we really have to take much more serious and bolder action,” he said.

Wegovy, other weight loss drugs not ‘silver bullets’, says WHO amid obesity guidelines review

The World Health Organization announced the end of a 10-month-long global health emergency for mpox, on Thursday (May 11). This comes nearly a year after the disease formerly known as monkeypox started spreading globally with confirmed cases in more than a hundred countries.&nbsp;

The announcement by the WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, came after the recommendation of the organisation’s emergency committee, which met on Wednesday. The organisation had first declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern in July 2022 and reiterated its stance in November and February.&nbsp;

The cases of the viral disease which spreads through direct contact with body fluids were first spotted in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo region. Since then, the disease has spread among humans but has, for the most part, been limited to certain West and Central African nations.

However, last May, cases of the disease began spreading rapidly around the world which prompted WHO to make it a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). The announcement also comes nearly a week after the organisation announced that COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency.&nbsp;

“However, as with Covid-19, that does not mean that the work is over,” said Tedros. He added, “While the emergencies of mpox and Covid-19 are both over, the threat of resurgent waves remains for both. Both viruses continue to circulate and both continue to kill.”

During his online press conference, Tedros also said that the disease remains a threat, particularly in areas of Africa where it has long been endemic. According to the WHO data, more than 87,000 cases and 140 deaths have been reported from 111 countries during the outbreak of the disease which causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions.&nbsp;

According to the WHO chief, almost 90 per cent fewer cases were recorded over the last three months compared to the previous three-month period. “We now see steady progress in controlling the outbreak based on the lessons of HIV and working closely with the most affected communities,” said Tedros, as quoted by news agency AFP.&nbsp;

In reference to the stigma related to mpox, as global cases were overwhelmingly among men who have sex with men, Tedros said that while it was a “driving concern in managing this epidemic and continues to hamper access to care for mpox, the feared backlash against the most affected communities has largely not materialised.”&nbsp;

The World Health Organization announced the end of a 10-month-long global health emergency for mpox, on Thursday (May 11). This comes nearly a year after the disease formerly known as monkeypox started spreading globally with confirmed cases in more than a hundred countries. The announcement by the WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, came after the recommendation of the organisation’s emergency committee, which met on Wednesday. The organisation had first declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern in July 2022 and reiterated its stance in November and February. The cases of the viral disease which spreads through direct contact with body fluids were first spotted in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo region. Since then, the disease has spread among humans but has, for the most part, been limited to certain West and Central African nations. He added, “While the emergencies of mpox and Covid-19 are both over, the threat of resurgent waves remains for both. Both viruses continue to circulate and both continue to kill.” During his online press conference, Tedros also said that the disease remains a threat, particularly in areas of Africa where it has long been endemic. According to the WHO data, more than 87,000 cases and 140 deaths have been reported from 111 countries during the outbreak of the disease which causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions. Earlier on Thursday, Professor Salim Abdool Karim, a leading Covid expert who previously advised the South African government on its response, said the world is not out of the pandemic but has reached a different stage.&nbsp;

"The FDA department has taken samples of cough syrup sent to Cambodia for testing. A total of 18,336 bottles of cough syrup were sent," he added. "Air pollution causes over 1,200 premature deaths per year in people under the age of 18 in Europe and significantly increases the risk of disease later in life," the agency stated.

This was the first study conducted by the agency which focused specifically on children.

"Although the number of premature deaths in this age group is low relative to the total for the European population estimated by EEA each year, deaths early in life represent a loss of future potential and come with a significant burden of chronic illness, both in childhood and later in life," said the agency.

The agency appealed to the authorities to focus on the improvisation of air quality around nurseries, sports facilities, schools and mass transport hubs.

"After birth, ambient air pollution increases the risk of several health problems, including asthma, reduced lung function, respiratory infections and allergies," noted the report.

“The causes of infertility are varied and often complex, and it is something that both men and women experience,” said Tedros.

&nbsp;“Indeed, a wide variety of people, in all regions, may require fertility care.”

The WHO, however, suggested that there was not enough evidence to show whether prevalence was rising or not.

“Based on the data we have, we cannot say that infertility is increasing or constant … the jury’s still out on that question,” the global health agency’s unit head for Contraception and Fertility Care, James Kiarie, told journalists citing that data so far has been mixed and inconsistent, according to AFP.

It is widely believed that an animal market at Huanan in central China's Wuhan city was the epicentre of the pandemic. It is claimed that from there, the SARS-CoV-2 virus rapidly spread to other locations in Wuhan in late 2019 and then to the rest of the world.

On Friday, the WHO asked the Chinese why the data from three years ago was not shared and why the data could not be found now&nbsp;after it was published online in January.

"Every piece of data relating to studying the origins of COVID-19 needs to be shared with the international community immediately. These data could have — and should have — been shared three years ago," WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva on Friday.

"As soon as we became aware of this data, we contacted the Chinese CDC and urged them to share it with WHO and the international scientific community so it can be analysed," he said, adding that WHO also convened the Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens, or SAGO, which met on Tuesday.

The report further mentioned that the genetic data drawn from swabs were taken from in and around the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market starting in January 2020 "shortly after the Chinese authorities had shut down the market because of suspicions that it was linked to the outbreak of a new virus."

A WHO-led team concluded in 2021 that the virus had likely been spread from bats to humans via another animal, though more investigation was required. But China claims that no more visits are required.

Since then, the WHO has established a scientific advisory group on dangerous pathogens, but it hasn't made any determinations about how the pandemic started since it claims that important pieces of information are lacking.

A US Energy Department report earlier said that the COVID pandemic was most likely brought on by an unintentional Chinese laboratory leak. This increased pressure on the WHO to provide an explanation. However, the department deemed its level of confidence in its assessment as “low,” people who read the report told the WSJ news portal.

3 years on since COVID 'pandemic', WHO chief says finding origins a 'moral imperative'

India has experienced a major epidemiological shift over the last few decades. The<a href="https://www.healthdata.org/india"> most common cause of mortality in India</a> is now cardiovascular disease (CVD), surpassing cancer, as per the <a href="https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/272672/wntd_2018_india_fs.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y">World Health Organisation</a> (WHO). Despite the considerably varying frequency of risk factors across regions, CVD is the main cause of death in all of India.

With CVD accounting for virtually every fourth death by 2030, India is predicted to have the unfortunate distinction of having the most cardiac mortality worldwide, according to renowned cardiologist Dr C N Manjunath who made the statement while addressing the 'HAL Medicon 2022.'

"Heart issues are growing among the young and middle-aged population and this is alarming," he said.

His statements are further corroborated by a study published in the National Centre for Biotechnology Information titled, ‘<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6994761/#:~:text=The%20results%20of%20Global%20Burden,earlier%20than%20the%20western%20population.">Cardiovascular disease in India: A 360 degree overview,</a><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6994761/#:~:text=The%20results%20of%20Global%20Burden,earlier%20than%20the%20western%20population.">’</a> which throws light on how Indians will be affected by CVD ten years sooner than their western counterparts.

WION spoke to Dr Vineet Bhatia, MD, DM, DNB (Cardiology), MNAMS, FESC, Associate Director, Cardiac sciences, Max Hospital, Patparganj, New Delhi, to comprehend young India's cardiovascular health and the reasons behind an increase in heart attacks.

Here are the excerpts.

Q. Firstly, What is the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest?

A. A heart attack also known as Myocardial Infarction occurs when one of the blood vessels (called coronary artery in medical terms) carrying blood to the heart muscle gets suddenly blocked completely.

As we age, the blood vessels on their inner side develop deposits called “plaque.” These plaques are rich in cholesterol and other substances (notorious to promote clotting when exposed to circulating blood) and are covered by a cap. The plaque&nbsp;gradually increases in size and encroaches on the vessel lumen (the inside space of a tubular structure). This process is accelerated by risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, deranged lipids, smoking etc.

These risk factors are also associated with a high risk of a phenomenon called “plaque rupture” in which disruption of the cap leads to the plaque material getting exposed to the blood flowing in the vessel.

This sets into motion a rapid sequence of events which result in the formation of a clot at the site of rupture resulting in a complete blockade of blood flow beyond that point.

Since the blood and oxygen supply is cut off, the muscle cells of the heart begin to suffer damage and start to die. Irreversible damage begins within 30 minutes of blockage.

Prompt recognition of the problem and early aggressive measures to restore blood flow in the occluded vessel help prevent muscle damage. This forms the basis of the popular saying in cardiology that states “Time is Muscle”- the faster you move the more muscle you can save.

Cardiac arrest on the other hand occurs suddenly and often without any warning. It usually follows an electric malfunction in the heart causing a sudden cessation of electrical activity or irregular heartbeat (referred to as arrhythmia).

With its pumping action disrupted, the heart can not pump blood to the brain, lungs and other vital organs. The individual loses consciousness and is detected to be pulseless and in shock. Unless prompt resuscitative measures are instituted, death may result within minutes. A heart attack may precipitate a cardiac arrest.

Q. What is the most common reason why young Indians are falling prey to heart attacks?

A. The high incidence of heart attacks in India is not of a unifactorial origin but of a multifactorial one. While the prevalence of smoking has declined in the west, there has been a rise in its prevalence among Indian youth.

India has emerged as the diabetes capital of the world and this is a major risk factor for premature cardiac disease. Unhealthy eating habits coupled with lack of exercise have been contributing to it too.

Furthermore, uncontrolled hypertension, reliance on alternative schools of medicine, stress, obesity and air pollution also play a role in the occurrence of heart attacks.

Q. Why are "seemingly fit" people experiencing heart attacks more frequently now?

A. Lately, we have come across several incidences of cardiac arrest while exercising in gyms raising several concerns.

Chronic and monitored exercise training has shown several physical and mental benefits including a healthy heart.

Regular structured exercise regimens help control risk factors like diabetes, blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

However, research has found evidence that sudden and high-intensity exercises (especially in people who exercise infrequently) can acutely increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest in individuals with underlying cardiac disease like coronary artery disease (recognised or unrecognised) or cardiac muscle disorders like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Exercise may increase the sheer stress in the blood vessel leading to plaque rupture.

Proper warm-up and cool-down periods (pre and post-exercise) and a gradual build-up of exercise time and severity over a period of time may be helpful in preventing unwanted cardiac events.

In-depth research on active gyms and the credentials of supposedly qualified trainers is also essential. The bulk of so-called self-styled trainers lack degrees in physical education and instruct according to their own whims and fancies because there are no guidelines in place.

Q. Can health supplements lead to unusual cardiac activity?

A. Protein supplements are the in thing among gym goers these days. They overlook the fact that a smart diet plan and using existing protein sources can build muscle, strengthen bones and power our body functions.

However, wanting quick and overnight results and most often peer pressure prompts people to use over-the-counter supplements available in an unregulated market.

The manufacturers package what they feel is safe. For the sake of palatability, they may add sugars, artificial flavours, thickeners and calories with detrimental effects. Many protein powders labelled herbal, ayurvedic and safe may in fact contain heavy metals like cadmium, lead, arsenic or mercury) leading to toxic effects.

Q. COVID-19 and heart attacks: Is there a correlation?

A. The Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, United States, recently reported that deaths from heart attacks rose significantly during pandemic surges, including the COVID-19 Omicron phase, overall reversing a heart-healthier pre-pandemic trend.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, heart attacks were the leading cause of death worldwide but were steadily on the decline. However, the new study—recently published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Medical Virology—shows that heart attack death rates took a sharp turn and increased for all age groups during the pandemic.

The rise&nbsp;in such cases has been seen across surges including the presumed less virulent omicron phase. Another disturbing finding reported is a significant increase&nbsp;in the 25-44 years age group who otherwise are often considered to have a lower risk.

Several plausible explanations have been proposed. The COVID-19 virus may accelerate pre-existing coronary artery disease even in young adults, it may lead to inflammation which may trigger the rupture of vulnerable plaques, mental stress like job loss fears, staying indoors with resultant lack of exercise and delay in seeking medical attention (for fear of exposure) may all play a role in triggering acute events.

Q. It has been recommended that one keep Aspirin 300 handy. Is that advice useful? Is it wise to disseminate this information?

A. A common misconception is that if a medicine is available without a prescription and can be purchased over the counter, it must be completely safe.

Aspirin is a vital medication in our armamentarium for treating heart attacks, but when used improperly, it increases the risk of internal bleeding.

It is important to only use the medicine when under a doctor's supervision. If one thinks one may be having a heart attack, it is best to get medical help right away.

If one is remotely placed then perhaps chewing a 325 mg aspirin tablet may be considered a reasonable option while sincere attempts are made to reach the nearest medical facility.

Q. Many people are resorting to herbal medicines after surviving a heart attack. Are they reliable?

Despite the considerably varying frequency of risk factors across regions, CVD is the main cause of death in all of India. With CVD accounting for virtually every fourth death by 2030, India is predicted to have the unfortunate distinction of having the most cardiac mortality worldwide, according to renowned cardiologist Dr C N Manjunath who made the statement while addressing the 'HAL Medicon 2022.' "Heart issues are growing among the young and middle-aged population and this is alarming," he said. His statements are further corroborated by a study published in the National Centre for Biotechnology Information titled, ‘Cardiovascular disease in India: A 360 degree overview,’ which throws light on how Indians will be affected by CVD ten years sooner than their western counterparts. WION spoke to Dr Vineet Bhatia, MD, DM, DNB (Cardiology), MNAMS, FESC, Associate Director, Cardiac sciences, Max Hospital, Patparganj, New Delhi, to comprehend young India's cardiovascular health and the reasons behind an increase in heart attacks. Here are the excerpts. Q. Firstly, What is the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest? A. A heart attack also known as Myocardial Infarction occurs when one of the blood vessels (called coronary artery in medical terms) carrying blood to the heart muscle gets suddenly blocked completely. As we age, the blood vessels on their inner side develop deposits called “plaque.” These plaques are rich in cholesterol and other substances (notorious to promote clotting when exposed to circulating blood) and are covered by a cap. The plaque gradually increases in size and encroaches on the vessel lumen (the inside space of a tubular structure). This process is accelerated by risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, deranged lipids, smoking etc. These risk factors are also associated with a high risk of a phenomenon called “plaque rupture” in which disruption of the cap leads to the plaque material getting exposed to the blood flowing in the vessel. This sets into motion a rapid sequence of events which result in the formation of a clot at the site of rupture resulting in a complete blockade of blood flow beyond that point. Since the blood and oxygen supply is cut off, the muscle cells of the heart begin to suffer damage and start to die. Irreversible damage begins within 30 minutes of blockage. Prompt recognition of the problem and early aggressive measures to restore blood flow in the occluded vessel help prevent muscle damage. This forms the basis of the popular saying in cardiology that states “Time is Muscle”- the faster you move the more muscle you can save. Cardiac arrest on the other hand occurs suddenly and often without any warning. It usually follows an electric malfunction in the heart causing a sudden cessation of electrical activity or irregular heartbeat (referred to as arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart can not pump blood to the brain, lungs and other vital organs. The individual loses consciousness and is detected to be pulseless and in shock. Unless prompt resuscitative measures are instituted, death may result within minutes. A heart attack may precipitate a cardiac arrest. Q. What is the most common reason why young Indians are falling prey to heart attacks? A. The high incidence of heart attacks in India is not of a unifactorial origin but of a multifactorial one. While the prevalence of smoking has declined in the west, there has been a rise in its prevalence among Indian youth. × India has emerged as the diabetes capital of the world and this is a major risk factor for premature cardiac disease. Unhealthy eating habits coupled with lack of exercise have been contributing to it too. Furthermore, uncontrolled hypertension, reliance on alternative schools of medicine, stress, obesity and air pollution also play a role in the occurrence of heart attacks. Q. Why are "seemingly fit" people experiencing heart attacks more frequently now? A. Lately, we have come across several incidences of cardiac arrest while exercising in gyms raising several concerns. Chronic and monitored exercise training has shown several physical and mental benefits including a healthy heart. Regular structured exercise regimens help control risk factors like diabetes, blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. However, research has found evidence that sudden and high-intensity exercises (especially in people who exercise infrequently) can acutely increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest in individuals with underlying cardiac disease like coronary artery disease (recognised or unrecognised) or cardiac muscle disorders like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Exercise may increase the sheer stress in the blood vessel leading to plaque rupture. Proper warm-up and cool-down periods (pre and post-exercise) and a gradual build-up of exercise time and severity over a period of time may be helpful in preventing unwanted cardiac events. In-depth research on active gyms and the credentials of supposedly qualified trainers is also essential. The bulk of so-called self-styled trainers lack degrees in physical education and instruct according to their own whims and fancies because there are no guidelines in place. Q. Can health supplements lead to unusual cardiac activity? A. Protein supplements are the in thing among gym goers these days. They overlook the fact that a smart diet plan and using existing protein sources can build muscle, strengthen bones and power our body functions. However, wanting quick and overnight results and most often peer pressure prompts people to use over-the-counter supplements available in an unregulated market. The manufacturers package what they feel is safe. For the sake of palatability, they may add sugars, artificial flavours, thickeners and calories with detrimental effects. COVID-19 and heart attacks: Is there a correlation? A. The Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, United States, recently reported that deaths from heart attacks rose significantly during pandemic surges, including the COVID-19 Omicron phase, overall reversing a heart-healthier pre-pandemic trend. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, heart attacks were the leading cause of death worldwide but were steadily on the decline. However, the new study—recently published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Medical Virology—shows that heart attack death rates took a sharp turn and increased for all age groups during the pandemic. The rise in such cases has been seen across surges including the presumed less virulent omicron phase. Another disturbing finding reported is a significant increase in the 25-44 years age group who otherwise are often considered to have a lower risk. Several plausible explanations have been proposed. The COVID-19 virus may accelerate pre-existing coronary artery disease even in young adults, it may lead to inflammation which may trigger the rupture of vulnerable plaques, mental stress like job loss fears, staying indoors with resultant lack of exercise and delay in seeking medical attention (for fear of exposure) may all play a role in triggering acute events. Q. It has been recommended that one keep Aspirin 300 handy. Is that advice useful? Is it wise to disseminate this information? A. A common misconception is that if a medicine is available without a prescription and can be purchased over the counter, it must be completely safe. Aspirin is a vital medication in our armamentarium for treating heart attacks, but when used improperly, it increases the risk of internal bleeding. It is important to only use the medicine when under a doctor's supervision. If one thinks one may be having a heart attack, it is best to get medical help right away. If one is remotely placed then perhaps chewing a 325 mg aspirin tablet may be considered a reasonable option while sincere attempts are made to reach the nearest medical facility. Q. Young India's heart health: Cardiologist dispels myths around cardiac activity

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called on all the countries to reveal what they know about the origins of the COVID-19 virus after US government agencies claimed that a Chinese lab leak was responsible for the pandemic outbreak.

“If any country has information about the origins of the pandemic, it’s essential for that information to be shared with WHO and the international scientific community,” Ghebreyesus said on Friday, according to AFP news agency.

Tedros said that there was a moral imperative to find out how the pandemic began, for the sake of the millions who lost their lives to Covid and those living with long Covid.

The WHO chief asserted that while they did not want to play the blame game, they instead wanted to understand the origin of the pandemic so that they could&nbsp;prevent, prepare and respond better to future epidemics and pandemics.

While making the request, Tedros deplored the politicisation of the research of the Covid origin, saying that it was making the scientific work harder and the world less safe as a result.

"WHO has not abandoned any plans to identify the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic," he told reporters.

The global health body chief also visited several hospitals in the region in the wake of the high-intensity quakes which caused massive wreckage and left thousands dead. Tedros also paid a visit&nbsp;to shelters for those displaced after the natural disaster.&nbsp;

WHO chief Tedros visits rebel-held region in Syria after tragic quake in first such visit

A 34-year-old man has been isolated in Spain as health authorities suspect that he contracted Ebola-like Marburg virus during his stay in Equatorial Guinea, a small African nation. While tests are carried out in Madrid, the patient has been transferred from a private hospital to an isolation unit at the Hospital La Fe in the Valencia region of Spain, news agency Reuters reported. 
 
Equatorial Guinea has so far registered nine deaths and 16 suspected cases of the disease after an outbreak earlier this month forced isolation of 200 people.&nbsp; Two suspected cases were detected in Cameroon also. &nbsp;

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Marburg virus disease is "a highly virulent disease that causes hemorrhagic fever, with a fatality ratio of up to 88 per cent". There are no vaccines or approved antiviral treatments linked to the deadly virus yet.

Marburg virus, the WHO has said, is in the same family of the virus that causes Ebola virus disease. The disease was initially detected in 1967 when two large outbreaks were reported simultaneously in Marburg and Frankfurt in Germany, and in Belgrade, Serbia. "The outbreak was associated with laboratory work using African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) imported from Uganda," the world health body underlined. The reservoir host of Marburg virus is the African fruit bat, Rousettus aegyptiacus, as per the US drug regulator Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The cave-dwelling bat is found widely across Africa. "Fruit bats infected with Marburg virus do not show obvious signs of illness. Primates&nbsp;(including people) can become infected with Marburg virus, and may develop serious disease with high mortality," the CDC has explained on its official website.

A 34-year-old man has been isolated in Spain as health authorities suspect that he contracted Ebola-like Marburg virus during his stay in Equatorial Guinea, a small African nation. While tests are carried out in Madrid, the patient has been transferred from a private hospital to an isolation unit at the Hospital La Fe in the Valencia region of Spain, news agency Reuters reported. Equatorial Guinea has so far registered nine deaths and 16 suspected cases of the disease after an outbreak earlier this month forced isolation of 200 people. Two suspected cases were detected in Cameroon also. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Marburg virus disease is "a highly virulent disease that causes hemorrhagic fever, with a fatality ratio of up to 88 per cent". The disease was initially detected in 1967 when two large outbreaks were reported simultaneously in Marburg and Frankfurt in Germany, and in Belgrade, Serbia. "The outbreak was associated with laboratory work using African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) imported from Uganda," the world health body underlined. Since then, infections have been reported from Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda. The cave-dwelling bat is found widely across Africa. "Fruit bats infected with Marburg virus do not show obvious signs of illness.
