WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said "we have come a long way", and the death toll from Covid is now a fifth of what it was a year ago. However, he added that even that is too much.

"Last week, less than 10,000 people lost their lives. That's still 10,000 too many and there is still a lot that all countries can do to save lives," he said, adding, "we are hopeful that at some point next year, we will be able to say that Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency."

The first cases of this deadly virus were identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan. As per Tedros "all hypotheses remain on the table" including the one that alleges that the virus may have escaped from Wuhan's virology laboratories.

A meeting of the WHO emergency committee that advises Tedros on whether a virus constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) will discuss the criteria for ending the coronavirus emergency phase.

It was encouraging that China was adjusting its current&nbsp;COVID-19 control strategies,&nbsp;WHO's emergencies director Mike Ryan said.

Ryan said he hopes that a coherent and clear strategy emerges in China "that balances the control of the virus with ... the livelihoods, wellbeing and human rights of the people."

European Union chief Charles Michel spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping about the protests and the tough restrictions imposed as part of the zero-Covid policy. Michel told the media that Beijing has hinted at decreasing the restrictions in the wake of a less dangerous Covid strain.

According to AFP, Xi told Michel that Chinese "people were frustrated" after three years of the pandemic and the protests are an expression of the displeasure. While China did not agree with the European model of avoiding lockdowns, Xi suggested that few restrictions will be removed.

Earlier, this type of diabetes was seen only in adults but it is now also occurring frequently in children.&nbsp;

Symptoms may be similar to those of type 1 diabetes but are often less evident. As a result, the disease may be diagnosed several years after its onset, causing complications to rise to higher levels.

Kluge noted that over the three months of the summer, health authorities reported "nearly 4,000 deaths in Spain, more than 1,000 in Portugal, more than 3,200 in the United Kingdom, and around 4,500 deaths in Germany."

In 2022, Europe experienced the worst drought since the Middle Ages; it killed around 15,000 people: WHO

Tuberculosis&nbsp;has rebounded after years of decline, killing an estimated 1.6 million people in 2021, up 14 percent in two years, new World Health Organization figures showed Thursday.

TB, which was overtaken by Covid-19 during the worst of the pandemic as the world's biggest infectious killer, claimed an estimated 1.5 million lives in 2020 and 1.4 million in 2019.

And the WHO blamed the resurgence of the disease on the pandemic, saying the crisis had had a huge and ongoing impact on access to diagnosis and treatment.

"Globally, the annual estimated number of deaths from TB fell between 2005 and 2019, but the estimates for 2020 and 2021 suggest that this trend has been reversed," the UN's health agency said in its annual Global TB report.

Most of the estimated increase in TB deaths globally was accounted for by four countries: India, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines.

The report said it was possible that TB would "once again be the leading cause of death worldwide from a single infectious agent, replacing Covid-19".

But Mel Spigelman, president of the non-profit TB Alliance, told AFP last week that that had already happened, comparing the annual TB death rate to the latest Covid-19 figures.

An estimated 10.6 million people fell ill with TB in 2021 -- a 4.5 percent increase on 2020, the WHO said.

"This is the first time in many years an increase has been reported in the number of people falling ill with TB and drug resistant TB," the WHO said.

And the incidence rate -- new cases per 100,000 population per year -- increased by 3.6 percent between 2020 and 2021, after declining by around two percent a year for most of the last two decades.

Progress dented

"The overarching finding of this report is that the Covid-19 pandemic continues to have a damaging impact on access to TB diagnosis and treatment and the burden of TB disease," the WHO update said.

"Progress made in the years up to 2019 has slowed, stalled or reversed, and global TB targets are off track.

"Intensified efforts backed by increased funding are urgently required to mitigate and reverse the negative impacts of the pandemic on TB."

Tuberculosis&nbsp;is caused by a bacteria that most often affects the lungs.&nbsp;Like Covid, it is transmitted via the air by infected people, for example by coughing. It is preventable and curable.

The WHO said conflicts around the world, the global energy crisis and associated risks to food security were likely to worsen the situation further.

"The top priority is to restore access to and provision of essential TB services, so that levels of TB case detection and treatment can recover to at least 2019 levels," the report said.

Eight countries accounted for more than two thirds of the global total of cases: India, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"If the pandemic has taught us anything, it's that with solidarity, determination, innovation and the equitable use of tools, we can overcome severe health threats," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"Let's apply those lessons to&nbsp;tuberculosis. It is time to put a stop to this long-time killer. Working together, we can end TB."

Over 150 million serious infections and over 1.7 million fatalities globally are annually attributed to fungus infections.

However, during the pandemic, the infections—which proliferated in hospitals and can be fatal for patients with compromised immune systems—became increasingly widespread.

The pathogens target individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those who are battling <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/covid-flare-up-at-worlds-largest-iphone-factory-in-china-affects-operations-528785">COVID-19</a>. Steroids are one of the Covid treatments that can make the body's defences against fungus even weaker.

A comparable list of the most deadly bacteria is published by the WHO, which also created a list of dangerous fungus due to a general lack of funding for their research.

According to the WHO, fungus-related infections continue to pose a serious threat to the public's health despite inadequate funding being allocated to their research.

There have historically been gaps in our understanding of diagnostics and effective therapies due to a lack of research on fungal pathogens.

Dr Hanan Balkhy, the WHO's assistant director-general, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) said: 'Emerging from the shadows of the bacterial antimicrobial resistance pandemic, fungal infections are growing, and are ever more resistant to treatments, becoming a public health concern worldwide.'

The health organisation encouraged nations to strengthen their mechanisms for detecting the 19 types of hazardous fungi and taking action.

According to Dr. Haileyesus Getahun, Director of the WHO's AMR Global Coordination Department, "Countries are encouraged to follow a step-by-step approach, starting with strengthening their fungal disease laboratory and surveillance capacities, and ensuring equitable access to existing quality therapeutics and diagnostics, globally."

Because of the planet's ongoing warming, fungi have had to evolve in ways that make them better at spreading disease to humans.

The characteristics of the fungus, its habitat, and its host change as a result of global warming, increasing the possibility that new fungi varieties will appear.

Fatal fungi: WHO publishes first ever list of fungal infections that are 'becoming a threat to humanity'

Zimbabwe has approved the use of long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention, recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) earlier this year making it the first African nation and third in the world to do so. Regulators in&nbsp; the United States and Australia have already backed the use of the drug.

“CAB-LA may be offered to people at substantial risk of HIV acquisition as part of comprehensive HIV prevention approaches,”&nbsp;the WHO had previously indicated. In July, the global health agency recommended the drug saying that it is highly effective at reducing the transmission risk among people at most risk of contracting HIV.&nbsp;

The recommendation was reportedly made in light of observing a surge of HIV infections globally.&nbsp;“HIV prevention efforts have stalled, with 1.5 million new HIV infections in 2021…the same as in 2020. There were 4000 new infections every day in 2021, with key populations and their sexual partners accounting for 70% of HIV infections globally.”&nbsp;

The key populations WHO was referring to reportedly include sex workers, men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, people in prisons, and transgender people. According to the local media, in most African nations, sex workers and people from the LGBTQIA+ community are often overlooked in the context of access to healthcare because of “laws and societal segregation”.&nbsp;

According to WHO, the intramuscular injectable long-acting form of PrEP has to be administered with the first two injections four weeks apart, followed thereafter by an injection every eight weeks. CAB-LA injections every two months are safe and highly effective in reducing the risk of contracting HIV, said the report.&nbsp;

In a statement, the WHO has also welcomed this decision and called it a “crucial step” for the African nation, adding that it&nbsp;would support them “to design and develop programmes so that CAB-LA can be implemented, safely and effectively, for greatest impact”.&nbsp;

Zimbabwe has seen AIDS-related deaths fall from at least 130,000 in 2002 to 20,000 in 2021, said media reports. Last year, the country also launched the 90-90-90 initiative which aims to end AIDS&nbsp;by 2030 it refers to 90% of people living with HIV knowing their status, 90% getting antiretroviral treatment and 90% having the virus suppressed.&nbsp;

Zimbabwe has approved the use of long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention, recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) earlier this year making it the first African nation and third in the world to do so.

According to the local media, in most African nations, sex workers and people from the LGBTQIA+ community are often overlooked in the context of access to healthcare because of “laws and societal segregation”. According to WHO, the intramuscular injectable long-acting form of PrEP has to be administered with the first two injections four weeks apart, followed thereafter by an injection every eight weeks. CAB-LA injections every two months are safe and highly effective in reducing the risk of contracting HIV, said the report. In a statement, the WHO has also welcomed this decision and called it a “crucial step” for the African nation, adding that it would support them “to design and develop programmes so that CAB-LA can be implemented, safely and effectively, for greatest impact”. Pharmaceutical giant Novartis has signed a licencing agreement increasing access to a vital leukaemia treatment, a UN-backed public health organisation said Thursday, marking the first-ever such agreement for a cancer drug.

The deal will give selected manufacturers the opportunity to develop, manufacture and supply generic versions of nilotinib, a twice-daily oral medication used to treat chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML).

"Access to high-quality cancer medicines is a crucial component of the global health response to the cancer burden," said Charles Gore, head of the Medicines Patent Pool, the United Nations-backed public health organisation working to increase access to life-saving medicines in poorer countries.

While the remaining patent period for nilotinib was "relatively short", he said the licencing deal set "a vital precedent that I hope other companies will follow", Gore said in a statement.

Novartis president of global health and sustainability Lutz Hegemann said the company was "proud to be pioneering this new licensing model with MPP".

The drug is listed on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines for the treatment of adults and children over the age of one suffering from CML.

Zeba Aziz, a medical oncologist at Hameed Latif Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, said nilotinib offers an alternative to people who are resistant or intolerant to imatinib, the first-line treatment for CML -- about 20 per cent of those who contract the disease.

The licence includes seven middle-income countries: Egypt, Guatemala, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tunisia, where patents on the product are pending or in force, MPP said.

The Access to Oncology Medicines (ATOM) Coalition welcomed the deal.

"This is a first for cancer treatment anywhere and demonstrates that the combined efforts of the private and public sectors can pave the way to help save millions of lives," ATOM co-chair Anil D-Cruz said in a separate statement.

In the report, WHO urged the governments to actively encourage the citizens to adopt a healthy lifestyle in order to stop the growth of such diseases. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare costs have risen around the world and the trend is expected to continue in the future.

“There are few areas in public health … where evidence on required action is so convincing, cost effective and practical,” the global report published by WHO stated.

“A consequence of this ‘inaction’ is that already stretched health systems are burdened with preventable disease today and even more so in the future, and communities fail to benefit from the wider social, environmental and economic benefits associated with more people being more active.”

While the advantages of exercise and physical activities are quite clear, the WHO noted that governments have not paid much attention to raising awareness. The situation is considerably worse in low-income countries where the standard of living is low and there is a lack of proper healthcare.

Among the 194 countries included in the report, WHO found that less than 50 per cent have a clear national policy when it comes to healthy living, but it is not fully functional in all of those countries.

The government-appointed committee investigating claims that four cough syrups made in India may have led&nbsp;to the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia has found that the clinical data provided by the WHO so far is insufficient to identify the aetiology.

Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) V G Somani said that the WHO has been informed about this on Saturday.

On October 13, the WHO's Rutendo Kuwana wrote to the DCGI to inquire about the status of the inquiry into Maiden Pharmaceuticals, the Sonipat-based maker of the four cough syrups.

In response to an email, Dr&nbsp;Somani said on Saturday that the Union ministry of health has established a committee of technical specialists to review and analyse the specifics of the adverse event reports and any relevant information supplied or to be shared by WHO, and to recommend subsequent action.

In its first meeting, the four-member committee, which is led by Dr Y. K. Gupta, Vice Chairperson of the Standing National Committee on Medicines, reviewed the reports and communications that have been so far received from the WHO. The committee also made a number of observations.

Mentioning the observations, Dr Somani said, "The clinical features and the treatment received by the children as shared by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/signs-of-dementia-can-be-detected-at-least-nine-years-prior-to-official-diagnosis-says-study-525111">WHO</a> so far are inadequate to determine the aetiology."

The specifics of the initial illness, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/scientists-have-successfully-implanted-and-integrated-human-brain-cells-into-newborn-rats-525434">signs</a> and symptoms, length of anura in the cases, results of laboratory tests including different markers and parameters, investigations for diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol on critical patient samples, treatment received prior to and following hospitalisation at the tertiary hospital in Gambia, treatment received prior to and following acute kidney injury was suspected, and reasons therefore, names and brands of the drugs,&nbsp;he said.

Dr Somani added that if a verbal autopsy was performed, the WHO might share a complete report.

Dr&nbsp;Somani has also enquired about the quantity of biological samples taken from children who had clinical symptoms similar to acute renal injury as well as the quantity of stool samples taken and analysed.

He also wanted information on the circumstances in which these items were used, as well as information on the product samples that were tested and found to be free of EG and DEG (as well as their composition).&nbsp;

"You are therefore requested to share the report on causal relations along with above details, as observed by the said Technical Committee at the earliest for further examination and follow up action at our level," he wrote.

"The manufacturing site has been inspected, test reports of sampled products from the laboratory are awaited and all the manufacturing activities of the manufacturer in question have been stopped," he said.

The four-person expert panel was set up by the Union health ministry on Wednesday to look into the specifics and adverse event reports regarding the deaths of 66 children in Gambia that may have been connected to four cough syrups produced by Maiden Pharmaceuticals' Sonipat facility. These reports were received from the WHO.

After reviewing and analysing the reports of adverse events, the causal relationship, and all relevant information that has already been shared by or will be shared by the World Health Organization, the committee will recommend a further course of action to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

WHO has not yet disclosed the connection between the deaths. To date, the WHO has provided CDSCO with the certificates of analysis, images, and summaries of each product sampled.

According to official sources, the WHO has announced that it is doing more inquiry.

While the Haryana State Drug Controller on October 7 issued Maiden Pharmaceuticals a show cause notice requesting an explanation of the "many contraventions" found during a recent inspection within a week or risk licence suspension or cancellation, the Haryana government on October 11 issued an order to cease all manufacturing operations of the company with immediate effect.

Official sources reported that the WHO has declared that it is doing additional inquiry.

This includes wreaking havoc on the healthcare system, and economies not to mention affecting the day-to-day lives of the people living with the condition.&nbsp;

“Crushing fatigue. Brain fog making straightforward tasks almost impossible. Shortness of breath walking up the stairs,” are just some of many symptoms experienced by people living with long Covid (post-Covid-19 condition), said Tedros in a piece he wrote for the Guardian.&nbsp;

WHO first started recognising long Covid in mid-2020 after patient groups, researchers and clinicians that they work with found cases of prolonged Covid-19. The virus that first emerged in China in late 2019 and subsequently turned into a global pandemic&nbsp;killed at least 6.5 million people across the world and infected more than 600 million, said the report.&nbsp;

However, WHO estimates that 10% to 20% of survivors have been left with mid and long-term aforementioned symptoms of Covid-19. Additionally, women are nearly twice as likely as men to have contracted this condition, while “those hospitalised with severe Covid are more likely to develop the condition” said Tedros citing the data by WHO and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).&nbsp;

Since the data is mostly available from high-income countries, it does not portray a clear picture of how many people are actually suffering, said the WHO chief, however, they estimate that tens of millions of people, or perhaps more, have contracted long Covid. As of now, with no evidence of how to best treat the condition, many face “often lengthy” and “frustrating” waits for support or guidance, said Tedros.&nbsp;

This large number of people suffering also has dangerous implications for countries and economies still reeling from the multiple waves of Covid-19 cases, said the report. “While the pandemic has changed dramatically due to the introduction of many life saving tools, and there is light at the end of the tunnel, the impact of long Covid for all countries is very serious and needs immediate and sustained action equivalent to its scale,” said Tedros.&nbsp; 
 
The WHO chief has urged leaders to “seriously ramp up support” to minimise the suffering of those who have long Covid. “This plan should encompass, providing immediate access to antivirals to patients at high risk of serious disease, investing in research and sharing new tools and knowledge as they’re identified to prevent, detect and treat patients more effectively. It also means supporting patients physical and mental health as well as providing financial support for those who are unable to work,” said Tedros in the piece he wrote.&nbsp;

Therefore, to drive this effort forward the WHO chief mapped out a plan with five “key elements”:&nbsp;

1. Tedros addresses the importance of listening to “patient groups, researchers and health workers dealing with this condition which we are still learning about”, said the WHO chief. He added that governments should use this “first-hand knowledge” and adjust policies accordingly to diagnose, support and treat people. On the other hand, it is critical for health professionals to assure and communicate how long and frustrating the road to recovery can be but people do get better, said Tedros.&nbsp;

2. The second element includes ensuring equitable access to tests, therapeutics and vaccines in order to avoid infection and reduce the severity of Covid, indicated the WHO chief. He highlights that while 70% of people have been vaccinated, only 22% of people in low-income countries have received the vaccination.&nbsp;

3. According to Tedros, there is also a need for systematic data collection on patients suffering from long Covid, since most of the data received by WHO is from high-income countries they are unaware of the impact on low and middle-income countries.&nbsp;

This gap in knowledge “undermines the overarching response and delays the scientific community from understanding the nature of long Covid and how best to treat it”, said the WHO chief urging countries to share their data with the organisation.&nbsp;

4. There is a large amount of research on long Covid for which Tedros has called for “sustained investment” which would help them expand their scientific understanding and develop better treatments and clinical management.&nbsp;

5. Lastly, he called for the integration of “multi-disciplinary care”, for people suffering from long Covid as they require a range of services, including “health and care workers with expertise in neurology, rehabilitation, psychology, speech therapy and respiratory therapy”, said the WHO chief. He reasoned that delayed clinical care can impact their quality of life as well as the length of time they suffer from the symptoms.&nbsp;

Therefore, to drive this effort forward the WHO chief mapped out a plan with five “key elements”: 1. Last year, World Mental Health Day was marked at the end of the ‘Mental Health Awareness Campaign Week’ by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India.&nbsp;

The first World Mental Health Day was observed on October 10, 1992, as an annual activity by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) a non-governmental organisation founded in 1948. Subsequently, in 1994, they started assigning particular themes for the annual event, seeing its popularity, “Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World,” was the very first theme.&nbsp;

Here are some of the ways recommended by the NIMH that you can practice self-care to improve both your physical and mental health:&nbsp;

6. Stay connected: Reach out to family and friends who can help provide emotional support in times of difficulty.&nbsp;

These steps are not definite or work for everyone since everyone’s idea of self-care is different. It will take a lot of trial and error to discover and understand what works best for you. Police in Gambia on Saturday announced they were launching an investigation into the deaths of dozens of children, amid growing concern over imported medicines.&nbsp;Following the deaths of 66 children, most from acute kidney failure, police said in a statement they were putting senior officers on the investigation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is yet to provide the exact "one to one causal&nbsp;relation of deaths," said sources at the Indian drugs standards body after the UN agency linked deaths of 66 children in Gambia to India-made cough syrups, media reports said.&nbsp;

"While all required steps will be taken, as a robust regulatory authority, WHO has been requested to share with CDSCO at the earliest the report on the establishment of a causal relation to the deaths with the medical products in question, photographs of labels/products, etc," PTI quoted an official source as saying.&nbsp;CDSCO stands for the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation.

It highlighted that medicines might have been contaminated with diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol and later confirmed the samples to be positive as well.&nbsp;

As per WHO's tentative result, four out of the 23 samples found diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol.

The CDSCO said that it responded to the WHO immediately and took up the matter with the authorities.&nbsp;

As per the alert issued by WHO, the four products are Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup, and Magrip N Cold Syrup.&nbsp;

WHO mentioned that "to date, the stated manufacturer has not provided guarantees to WHO on the safety and quality of these products." It further added that laboratory analysis of samples of the products "confirms that they contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants."&nbsp;

The warning states that the toxic substances and can be fatal to humans. The toxic effect "can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death."&nbsp;

WHO said that information received from India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation indicated that the manufacturer had only supplied the contaminated medications to The Gambia.&nbsp;

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday (October 5) said that it is investigating "contaminated" medicines, majorly for pediatric use, which are found to contain toxic chemicals. WHO has issued a warning that they could be linked to the deaths of 66 children in the west African nation of The Gambia. The cough and cold syrups are produced by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited in India. In a series of tweets, the WHO, citing its Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said: "WHO has today issued a medical product alert for four contaminated medicines identified in #Gambia that have been potentially linked with acute kidney injuries and 66 deaths among children. The loss of these young lives is beyond heartbreaking for their families." WHO mentioned that "to date, the stated manufacturer has not provided guarantees to WHO on the safety and quality of these products." It further added that laboratory analysis of samples of the products "confirms that they contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants." The toxic effect "can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death." WHO said that information received from India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation indicated that the manufacturer had only supplied the contaminated medications to The Gambia. President Joe Biden has nominated US Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy to serve as the country's representative on the executive board of the World Health Organisation. 
Dr Murthy, 45, will serve in the new position alongside his continued duties as the US Surgeon General, the White House said in a statement.

He was confirmed by the US Senate in March 2021 to serve as the 21st Surgeon General of the country. He previously served as the 19th Surgeon General under President Barack Obama.

As the nation's doctor, the Surgeon General's mission is to help lay the foundation for a healthier country, relying on the best scientific information available to provide clear, consistent and equitable guidance and resources for the public.

"While serving as the 21st Surgeon General, Dr Murthy is focused on drawing attention to and working across government to address a number of critical public health issues, including the growing proliferation of health misinformation, the ongoing youth mental health crisis, well-being and burnout in the health worker community, and social isolation and loneliness," said the White House.

As the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Dr Murthy also commands a uniformed service of over 6,000 dedicated public health officers, serving the most underserved and vulnerable populations.

The first Surgeon General of Indian descent, Dr Murthy, was raised in Miami and is a graduate of Harvard, the Yale School of Medicine, and the Yale School of Management, the White House said.

A renowned physician, research scientist, entrepreneur and author, he lives in Washington, DC with his wife Dr Alice Chen, and their two children, it said.

In response, the world health body said that it welcomes the "overarching recommendations" of The Lancet. WHO added that the recommendations "align with our commitment to stronger global, regional & natl pandemic preparedness, prevention, readiness & response".
