The single border crossing which was open for the transfer of aid was also disrupted by the earthquake.

"This afternoon I met with &nbsp;President Assad, who indicated he was open to considering additional cross-border access points for this emergency," said Tedros. during a virtual press conference from the Syrian capital.

Tedros appreciated the "recent blanket approval by the government of Syria for the UN for cross-line conveys" to transfer aid into the rebel-held areas.

However, he added that although cross-line aid convoys have been given the all-clear by Damascus to enter government-held areas, WHO is still waiting for the green light. "We're on standby," he said.&nbsp;

According to an early draft of a global pandemic agreement, World Health Organization (WHO) may ask governments to reserve drugs and vaccines in order to distribute them in poorer countries. This step could be taken to avoid a repeat of the 'catastrophic failure' during the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;According to Reuters, one of the most concrete proposals in the draft accord includes a measure to reserve 20 per cent of any tests, vaccines or treatments developed for use in poorer countries.

The draft also hints at reigniting an argument over intellectual property rights (IPRs) on vaccine formula. The draft says that it might ask countries to waive off IPRs on vaccines and life-saving drugs during pandemics to allow them wider access. Though the pharmaceutical industry is against the move.

The agreement is known as the Pandemic Treaty which has been drawn by WHO members and will now go through a lengthy negotiating process before being finalised. The talks around the draft treaty will begin on February 27 and will continue till 2024. Member states have agreed that the treaty will be legally binding for those who sign up, but it is not clear how will it be enforced.&nbsp;

The above-mentioned draft was released on Wednesday to all member states and non-governmental organisations and contains numerous measures to ensure the world's response that the next pandemic is not only robust but more equitable.&nbsp;

"It is a once-in-a-generation chance to make a paradigm shift in the protection and improvement of the health of the world's people,"&nbsp;WHO spokesperson Fadela Chaib said of the accord.

The draft begins by saying it is being drawn up "in recognition of the catastrophic failure of the international community in showing solidarity and equity in response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic".

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday (January 19) that China reported a 70% rise in weekly Covid hospitalisations, the highest since the pandemic started. According to the WHO's report based on data submitted by Beijing, the number of people hospitalised rose by 70 % to 63,307 versus the previous week, news agency Reuters reported. However, the United Nations health agency said it was awaiting "detailed provincial data disaggregated by week of reporting" on nearly 60,000 virus-related hospital deaths reported by China last week and did not include them in the tally.

A few days back, the WHO had urged China to share more information on the pandemic and said it will continue to work with the government providing technical advice and support, and engaging in analysing the situation.

Similarly, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also announced plans to speed up the licensing and use of novel vaccines against tuberculosis (TB) and the creation of the TB Vaccine Accelerator Council, on Tuesday (January 17).&nbsp;

“Just as vaccines were a game-changer in the battle against COVID, Global Plan calls for approving a new TB vaccine by 2025 and making it available to adults and adolescents in TB-affected nations,” said Mandaviya, as per PTI. He added, “India is fully prepared and in an advanced stage for taking this forward.” The Indian Health minister also noted how more than 1.6 million across the world lost their lives because of TB in 2021 and it was the leading cause of death from infectious diseases before the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

Initiatives taken by the Indian government&nbsp;to fight TB

The health minister also spoke about how under the leadership of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi the country has been at the forefront of the global fight against TB including the recently launched ‘Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’. The campaign of community engagement aims to provide nutritional diagnostic and vocational support to TB patients delivered through the community, said Mandaviya.&nbsp;

This would deliver an economic return of US$40 for every dollar invested, the Indian health minister added. He also reiterated the importance of ensuring sufficient funds for the initiative as we would end up paying a much higher price later.&nbsp;

He also noted how one of the most important lessons from the COVID-19 response is that innovative health interventions can be delivered fast if they are prioritized politically and financed sufficiently. Therefore, in order to speed up the licensing and use of vaccines against TB Tedros announced the TB Vaccine Accelerator Council. The council will include funders, global agencies, governments and those with TB, in identifying and overcoming barriers to vaccine development, said the UN.

According to the UN agency, TB remains the second leading infectious killer after COVID-19 and the 13th leading cause of death worldwide.&nbsp;

It is also both curable and preventable but even with global commitments to end the disease by 2030, the epidemic has shown no signs of slowing down, said WHO. In 2021, over 10 million people were infected with the disease. Additionally, the global health agency also noted, drug resistance continues to be a major problem with at least half a million people developing drug-resistant TB every year.&nbsp;

However, the state of Uttar Pradesh in north&nbsp;India&nbsp;has suspended the production licence of Marion&nbsp;Biotech, according to&nbsp;recent reports.&nbsp;

So far, Marion has not provided any evidence to WHO on the safety and quality of its products.&nbsp;

“We remain concerned about the evolving situation and we continue encouraging China to track the COVID-19 virus and vaccinate the highest risk people. We continue to offer our support for clinical care and protecting its health system,” said Tedros on Twitter.&nbsp;

This also comes after countries including the United States, India, Italy and Japan, among others and most recently South Korea have mandated Covid tests for travellers from China. “In the absence of comprehensive information from China, it is understandable that countries around the world are acting in ways that they believe may protect their populations. COVID-19,” said the WHO chief. &nbsp;

Notably, no measures have been imposed in the 27-nation bloc, European Union as its health agency says they were not warranted for the moment. However, on Wednesday, at least half of the passengers on a flight from China to Italy tested positive for COVID-19.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the US has also raised concerns about possible variants of the virus amid the lack of data from China. Similarly, Tedros referring to his recent press conference on the subject also wrote, “in order to make a comprehensive risk assessment of the COVID-19 situation on the ground in China, WHO needs more detailed information.”&nbsp;

Tedros had also previously, in a press conference on December 21 expressed concerns about the reports of an uptick in cases emerging from China. As well as called for detailed data on the severity of the disease, hospital admissions and intensive care requirements from China.&nbsp;

The recent uptick in cases has partly been attributed to Beijing’s sudden backtrack from its stringent ‘zero-Covid’ policy, following country-wide protests. Furthermore, several reports suggest that hospitals across China have been overwhelmed by this sudden increase in the number of infections.&nbsp;

The BA.1 and BA.2 sub-variants of Omicron were responsible for the January 2022 wave in India. However,&nbsp;India experienced extremely few cases of BF.7. Now the global concern around COVID situation in China has increased. In India, four cases have been found so far of BF.7, two cases each in Gujarat and Odisha. In Odisha, the Omicron BF.7 was detected in a sample testing on 30 September. As per&nbsp;Odisha Health and Family Welfare department cited by multiple media outlets, at the time of testing, BF.7 was neither a VOC (Variant of Concern) nor VOI (Variant of Interest).&nbsp;

<h2>Are vaccines effective on BF.7?</h2>

The virus has mutated many times over since the beginning of 2020. As per reports, the Omicron variants are known to evade the immune response from most vaccines currently in use however getting vaccination is still advisable as it prevents death, as per medical experts.&nbsp;

The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.&nbsp;

WHO's emergencies director Mike Ryan said that it is a possibility that China is struggling to keep a tab on the total number of infections with irregular testing since the relaxation of the rules.&nbsp;

"In China, what's been reported is relatively low numbers of cases in ICUs, but anecdotally ICUs are filling up. I wouldn't like to say that China is actively not telling us what's going on. I think they're behind the curve," he said in a press conference according to a report by Associated Press.
