"Today, the emergency committee met and advised me that in its view, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference.

Amid worries caused by the rise in mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the spread to nearby countries, the WHO hastily convened a meeting of experts to study the outbreak.

A Public Health Emergency is the highest level of alarm under the International Health Regulations, which are legally binding on 196 countries.

"The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of mpox in eastern DRC, its detection in neighbouring countries that had not previously reported mpox, and the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying," said Tedros.

"It's clear that a coordinated international response is essential to stop these outbreaks and save lives.

"This is something that should concern us all."

WHO's decision comes after the African Union's health watchdog declared its own public health emergency over the growing outbreak.

Tedros said the more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths reported so far this year in DR Congo had already exceeded last year's total.

"The emergence last year and rapid spread of clade 1b in DRC, which appears to be spreading mainly through sexual networks, and its detection in countries neighbouring DRC is especially concerning," he said, citing Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

He said many members feared the known situation in Africa was "actually the tip of the iceberg", because without surveillance, "we don't have the full picture".

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention director, insisted: "We can stop transmission of mpox with a concerted effort."

Two vaccines for mpox are recommended by WHO immunisation experts.

<h2>What is mpox?</h2>

Formerly called monkeypox, the virus was first discovered in humans in 1970 in what is now the DRC.

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals but can also be passed from human to human through close physical contact.

The disease causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions.

In May 2022, mpox infections surged worldwide, mostly affecting gay and bisexual men.

The WHO declared a public health emergency which lasted from July 2022 to May 2023. The outbreak, which has now largely subsided, caused some 140 deaths out of around 90,000 cases.

A Public Health Emergency has only been declared seven times previously since 2009: over H1N1 swine flu, poliovirus, Ebola, Zika virus, Ebola again, COVID-19 and mpox.

<h2>The cases reported so far</h2>

On Friday, the health department in Pakistan's&nbsp;Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province said it detected three cases of mpox.&nbsp;The viral infection was detected in the patients on their arrival from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the department said.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was not immediately clear which variant was detected in the patients.

A day earlier, Sweden confirmed its first case of the viral infection, which was also the first case outside Africa.

Addressing a press conference,&nbsp;Olivia Wigzell, director-general at the Swedish Public Health Agency, said that the person was&nbsp;infected while staying in a part of Africa where there was a large outbreak of the disease.

Scientists now blame this variant for the outbreak in the regions that remained unaffected previously as enough preventive measures are not put in place.

"The most severe and lethal Clade 1 mpox, historically endemic to central Africa, has become predominant and is now found throughout the region," Zeil Rosenberg MD, executive vice president at Tonix Pharmaceuticals which is developing a mpox vaccine, was quoted as saying by Daily Mail.

It added, “We call on stakeholders to stop any usage of suspicious medicines and report to relevant authorities”.

The fake drugs claim to contain the active ingredient – semaglutide – found in Novo Nordisk’s diabetes drug Ozempic, which helps people with type 2 diabetes control the amount of sugar in their blood.

The injection, which is supposed to be taken weekly, signals the brain that we’re full. Therefore, the drug also helps people lose weight by suppressing their urge to eat.

The UN health agency also warned that the fake drugs could be harmful if they do not have the necessary raw components and can lead to unmanaged blood glucose levels or weight.&nbsp;

American drug giant Eli Lilly published an open letter saying it was “deeply concerned” about people selling fake medicines or compounded versions of tirzepatide, an active ingredient in its Mounjaro and other GLP-1 drugs that promote weight loss.&nbsp;

“In just two years, the Covid-19 pandemic erased a decade of gains in life expectancy,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He noted the importance of a new Pandemic Agreement “not only to strengthen global health security, but to protect long-term investments in health and promote equity”.

The World Health Organization report also mentions that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as ischaemic heart disease and stroke, cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and diabetes killed most people before the pandemic. They accounted for 74 per cent of all deaths in 2019.&nbsp;

Even during the Covid pandemic, the Non Communicable Diseases (NSDs) continued to account for 78 per cent of non-COVID deaths.

Refugees, migrants and the 1.3 billion people living with disabilities faced disproportionate health inequities, the report said.

It pointed out that access to healthcare for refugees and migrants remains limited. Only half of the 84 countries surveyed between 2018 and 2021 provided government-funded health services to these groups at levels comparable to their citizens.

<h2>What is the silver-line?</h2>

Since 2018, 1.5 billion more people achieved better health and well-being, while universal health coverage expanded to 585 million more. But only 777 million more are likely to have adequate protection during health emergencies by 2025.

“Without accelerating progress, it is unlikely that any of the health SDGs will be met by 2030,” &nbsp;Samira Asma, WHO assistant director-general for data, analytics and delivery for impact, said in an official statement.&nbsp;

"This remains I think an enormous concern," the UN health agency's chief scientist Jeremy Farrar told reporters in Geneva.

The bird flu outbreak, that started in the year 2020, has so far claimed the lives of tens of millions of poultry, along with infecting wild birds as well as land and marine mammals.

Surprisingly, other species that were affected by the contagion were cows and goats, which as per the experts were not even considered vulnerable to this type of influenza.

The A (H5N1) strain has become "a global zoonotic animal pandemic", Farrar said.

"The great concern of course is that in... infecting ducks and chickens and then increasingly mammals, that virus now evolves and develops the ability to infect humans and then critically the ability to go from human to human."

For now, experts say that there were no reports of the spread of the virus amongst humans, however, in cases where humans were infected through contact with animals, "the mortality rate is extraordinarily high", Farrar said.

The WHO said that from the year 2003 to 1 April 2024, it recorded around 463 deaths from over 889 human cases across 23 countries, which it said put the case mortality rate at 52 per cent.

The United States had earlier this month raised concern after a person in Texas was recovering from influenza after being exposed to dairy cattle.

This was the second case of a human testing positive for the contagion after being exposed to the herd that caught the infection from wild birds in Texas, Kansas and other states.

When "you come into the mammalian population, then you're getting closer to humans," Farrar said, warning that "this virus is just looking for new, novel hosts".

"It's a real concern."&nbsp;

Farrar further urged for ramping up the monitoring efforts stating that it was "very important understanding how many human infections are happening... because that's where adaptation (of the virus) will happen".

"It's a tragic thing to say, but if I get infected with H5N1 and I die, that's the end of it. If I go around the community and I spread it to somebody else then you start the cycle."

Following the debate, the lawmakers voted by 42 to four to send it to a parliamentary committee for review. The committee can make amendments to the bill and is expected to send it to the national assembly to be voted on. This is a routine process which takes at least three months.&nbsp;

Equality Now, an advocacy group, highlighted the importance of the ban noting that more than half of the 92 countries where FGM is practised have laws against it.&nbsp;

“If the law is reversed in Gambia, there is a risk that the advocacy efforts in subsequent countries...will fail or go back,” said Caroline Lagat, a programme officer at Equality Now, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

The number of women and girls who have undergone FGM worldwide has risen to 230 million from 200 million eight years ago, reported UNICEF, earlier this month.&nbsp;

Even though doctors knew obesity numbers were on a fast rise, a rise past one billion&nbsp;wasn't expected until 2030.

As quoted by AFP, it has come "much earlier than we have anticipated," said Francesco Branca, director of nutrition for health at the WHO.

<h2>Obesity rate</h2>

To reach their estimates, as per the Lancet, experts analysed the weight and height measurements of more than 220 million people in more than 190 countries. They found that an estimated 504 million adult women, 374 million men, and 159 million children were obese in 2022.&nbsp;

Compared to 1990, this is a more than triple increase among men, and double for women, while for children this was a five times increase (up from 31 million).

Experts blame bad eating habits for it, and say "very rapid transformation of the food systems is not for the better".

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "This new study highlights the importance of preventing and managing obesity from early life to adulthood, through diet, physical activity, and adequate care, as needed."

Obesity is a chronic and complex illness that comes with a greater risk of death from heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers, and even a higher risk of death from coronavirus.

The UN health organization models the data every year to produce more precise numbers. In 2022, it projects 9.2 million cases and 136,216 measles fatalities.

Crowcroft reported a 43 per cent increase in deaths in 2022, despite the fact that modeling for the most recent year is still pending. She expected an increase in mortality in 2023 as a result of the growing number of cases.

"This year is going to be very challenging," she added.

<h2>Report findings</h2>

In the report released ahead of World Cancer Day, which is observed on February 4th, the IARC predicted a massive increase in the global cancer burden.

"The rapidly growing global cancer burden reflects both population ageing and growth, as well as changes to people’s exposure to risk factors, several of which are associated with socioeconomic development," said the WHO in its press release.

It identified tobacco, alcohol, and obesity as the key factors driving the increasing incidence of cancer. Air Pollution was mentioned as a key driver of environmental risk factors.

"I think all of you have said the two-state solution and so on, and hope this war will end and move into a true solution," he said, before breaking down, describing the current situation as "beyond words".
