The stage is set for the second Republican debate as the race for the White House intensifies.

Race for white house: 7 republican candidates qualify for 2nd presidential debate

US President Joe Biden on Friday (September 22) announced his administration was setting up a new office of gun violence prevention at the White House. The aim of the office is to provide coordination on the issue and implement existing laws while working with local authorities to pass gun safety legislation at the state level.

"I'm proud to announce the creation of the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, the first office in our history. Created by executive order, I'm determined to send a clear message about how important this issue is to me and to the country," said Biden during the announcement ceremony at the White House.

Despite the new push, the White House does not have unilateral power to meaningfully limit gun use in the United States, such as by banning assault weapons. Additionally, the new office lacks any kind of enforceable power to tackle the menace of gun violence.

Biden reflected on the same and said the executive action alone was not going to solve the issue.

"To be clear, none of these steps alone is going to solve the entirety of the gun violence epidemic. None of them. But together, they will save lives and it's going to help...help rally the nation a sense of urgency and seriousness of purpose."

Notably, Vice President Kamala Harris will head the new office, which is likely to lend her more visibility ahead of her re-election bid for the 2024 polls.

"We know true freedom is not possible if people are not safe," she said during the announcement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met US President Joe Biden on Thursday (September 21) at the White House and managed to win pledges of unstinting support and air defence weapons from the latter, but also issued a warning that Kyiv might get tipped over by Russians if the Republicans continue to oppose military aid.

Speaking at the Oval Office at the start of talks, Biden said the US remains committed to providing support in Kyiv’s efforts to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.

Afterwards, Biden formally announced a military aid package worth $325 million that includes air defence systems and the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155-millimeter Howitzer cannon. Additionally, the president informed that the first US M1 Abrams tanks will arrive in Ukraine "next week".

White House denies allegations it rejected Canada's claims regarding separatist leader's killing

Republicans in the United States House of Representatives have opened an impeachment investigation targeting Democratic President Joe Biden following months of inquiries into his son Hunter Biden's overseas business transactions. They have found no evidence of Biden's wrongdoing. The White House claims that Biden did nothing illegal and that the Republican Party has no basis for an impeachment investigation.

Biden impeachment inquiry: White House says President Joe Biden did nothing wrong

In 1993, under the sun-drenched skies of the White House, the world watched in awe as Yasser Arafat (former president of Palestine) and Yitzhak Rabin (former prime minister of Israel), two stalwarts from opposing sides, clasped hands in a moment that would become etched in history. The Oslo Accords were signed, offering a glimmer of hope in the seemingly intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Thirty years later, the echoes of that symphony of peace, filled with the harmonious chords of diplomacy and the discordant notes of unresolved issues, continue to reverberate.

Dr Michael Milstein, the head of the Palestinian Studies Forum at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, speaking on the significance of the Oslo Accords states: "The Oslo Accords were the most crucial junction in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It was the first time the leaders recognized each other and agreed to establish a Palestinian entity between the river and the sea. You can embrace or critique the Oslo Accords, but they have solidified into an unchangeable fact."

A glimpse into the past

The Oslo Accords were a result of secret negotiations in Oslo, Norway, and signalled a ray of hope in a region marred by violence. The groundbreaking agreement delineated a framework for Palestinian self-governance in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, envisioning an ultimate comprehensive peace settlement. Dr Milstein states that the Accords "signaled a ray of hope" and laid the foundation for Palestinian self-determination. While hailed as a breakthrough, they were not without their detractors.

The legacy of hope and frustration

While the Oslo Accords offered a glimmer of hope, they also sowed the seeds of frustration. Many consider them a failed peace deal due to the ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestine. Disputes over land, security, and the status of Jerusalem persisted. The assassination of Prime Minister Rabin in 1995 added another layer of complexity to the peace process.

Current relevance amidst tensions

Today, the Israel-Palestine conflict remains as volatile as ever. The Oslo Accords' promise of a two-state solution seems more elusive than ever. The Gaza Strip continues to be a flashpoint, and issues like refugees and the status of Jerusalem remain unresolved. Against this backdrop, the Oslo Accords serve as a cautionary tale about the challenges of achieving lasting peace.

Dr Milstein concurs, highlighting that "the basic vision of 1993 cannot be implemented today," leaving both sides in an "unconventional and perplexing situation".

Moreover, since the signing of the Oslo Accords, Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have continued to expand. At the close of 1993, roughly 116,300 Israeli settlers resided in these territories, as per Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics. Although Israel withdrew its settlements from Gaza in 2005, the population of Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has swelled from 520,000 to over 700,000 according to the UNHRC.

The role of the United States

The United States played a crucial role in brokering the Oslo Accords, and its involvement remains significant. Over the years, the US policy has evolved but the country continues to advocate for a negotiated settlement and supports a two-state solution. Washington's diplomatic influence remains instrumental in facilitating dialogue between the two parties.

Global implications

The significance of the Oslo Accords transcends the borders of Israel and Palestine; they bear global ramifications. These agreements showcased the potential of diplomacy in resolving longstanding conflicts, offering a blueprint for peace negotiations worldwide. Nevertheless, their limitations and the enduring conflict in the region underscore the intricate nature of attaining a just and enduring peace.

"In 1993, all superpowers, particularly the US, played a pivotal role in promoting and supporting the Oslo Accords. Today, international involvement, including the Arab world during the Arab Spring, is significantly diminished, including economic support. The entire conflict now hinges more on the two principal parties involved," added Dr Milstein.

In conclusion, the Oslo Accords, despite the obstacles and intricacies they encompass, stand as a momentous chapter in the relentless pursuit of peace in the Middle East. As we commemorate three decades since that historic handshake, it is imperative to recognise the enduring relevance of seeking a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an issue that reverberates not only across the region but also throughout the global order. The journey is arduous, but the pursuit of peace remains an unshakable commitment.

(Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL.
United States former president Donald Trump said that he will have no choice but to lock up his political enemies if he becomes the president again.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday (August 30), the rightwing broadcaster Glenn Beck brought up the famous campaign trail vow of Trump to “lock up” Hillary Clinton, who was his opponent in 2016. Trump didn't actually go through with it after assuming office.

Trump further stated that “the woman that I never met, that they accused me of rape, that’s being run by a Democrat, a Democrat operative, and paid for by the Democrat [sic] party”.

An Iranian immigrant to the United States who is jailed in Tehran and his son camping outside the White House have together gone on hunger strikes to win the elder's freedom after he was not included in a deal to free US citizens.

Shahab Dalili -- who is a US permanent resident but not a citizen -- was jailed in 2016 after he said he returned to Iran for his father's funeral. He was handed 10 years in prison on espionage-related charges he strongly denies.

His 28-year-old son Darian Dalili, who lives in Massachusetts, said he drove to Washington upon hearing about the deal made public Thursday in which five US citizens are expected to be freed, saying it was "heartbreaking" his father was not mentioned.

It feels "as if my plight and my family's plight apparently don't matter. I don't know how else to put it," said Darian Dalili, who is a US citizen and said his father would have been as well "if he hadn't been taken hostage."

Dalili received a phone call from Tehran's Evin prison from his father, who initially tried to change his son's mind about going on a hunger strike but then decided to do the same.

The younger Dalili, who has set himself up in Lafayette Park outside the White House, said he has only been consuming water since Saturday.

I don't know how else to put it," said Darian Dalili, who is a US citizen and said his father would have been as well "if he hadn't been taken hostage." Dalili received a phone call from Tehran's Evin prison from his father, who initially tried to change his son's mind about going on a hunger strike but then decided to do the same. The younger Dalili, who has set himself up in Lafayette Park outside the White House, said he has only been consuming water since Saturday. "It's just a move of desperation." Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday that no more US citizens were known to be imprisoned in Iran following the deal, with the five prisoners moved to house arrest as an initial step. Abram Paley, the State Department's acting special envoy on Iran, has spoken to the Dalili family but Shahab Dalili has not been formally designated as wrongfully detained, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said. President Joe Biden's administration has also heard appeals to include in the deal Jamshid Sharmahd, a German citizen who lived in California and who has been sentenced to death. Patel said Tehran's treatment of Sharmahd has been "reprehensible" but that it was for Germany to address his case. Under the deal for the five Americans, South Korea will unfreeze $6 billion in Iranian oil revenue frozen to comply with US sanctions, sending the funds to an account in Qatar for humanitarian use. White House to detail plans restricting some US investments in China

The US Secret Service has told President Joe Biden the name of the person who brought cocaine into the White House last month, according to a report by Soldier of Fortune last Sunday (August 6). A white substance was discovered in the White House library on July 2. An investigation was launched and a preliminary field test conducted on this substance yielded positive results for cocaine.

The investigation was closed on July 13 due to lack of evidence.

'Biden knows who the person is'

However, citing three security sources, the Soldier of Fortune report said that investigators are aware of who brought cocaine (into the White House) and so does President Biden. “If you want the name, ask Joe Biden. He knows who it is," one of the sources told the magazine.

The magazine directly messaged Biden about the claims. "Three trusted sources tell me the Secret Service gave you the name of the person who brought the cocaine into the Executive Mansion. Is this true; and if so, can you please confirm the name? If you know the name and are not revealing it, please explain why," the magazine's publisher Susan Katz Keating messaged Biden.

However, the message bounced back as undelivered, the report added.

WION cannot independently verify the claims of the mentioned magazine.

When cocaine was found inside the White House premises, observers speculated the drug belonged to President Biden's son Hunter, the report said. However, another security source told the magazine, “It was someone within the Biden family orbit, and it wasn’t Hunter.”

On July 7, Representative James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, asked Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to provide “a staff-level briefing” on the cocaine issue.

The US Secret Service has told President Joe Biden the name of the person who brought cocaine into the White House last month, according to a report by Soldier of Fortune last Sunday (August 6).

'Biden knows who the person is' However, citing three security sources, the Soldier of Fortune report said that investigators are aware of who brought cocaine (into the White House) and so does President Biden. However, another security source told the magazine, “It was someone within the Biden family orbit, and it wasn’t Hunter.” On July 7, Representative James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, asked Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to provide “a staff-level briefing” on the cocaine issue. The presence of illegal drugs in the White House is unacceptable and a shameful moment in the White House’s history. According to a senior law-enforcement official, the cocaine was found in a storage facility that is “routinely used by White House staff and guests to store cell phones,” Comer said in his letter to Cheatle. "This alarming development requires the Committee to assess White House security practices and determine whose failures led to an evacuation of the building and finding of the illegal substance," the letter also said. Secret Service has informed Biden about the person who brought cocaine into White House, says report

An analysis of the White House's annual pay report has revealed a gender pay gap of 20 per cent, Wall Street Journal reported. This finding raises substantial questions about President Joe Biden's previous emphasis on addressing pay disparities among various employers.

Biden on “national equal pay day” at the White House in March said, “I call upon all Americans to recognise the full value of women’s skills and their significant contributions to the labour force, acknowledge the injustice of wage inequality and join efforts to achieve equal pay."

The annual pay report submitted to Congress disclosed the names, positions, and salaries of over 440 staff members.

Surprisingly, the median salary for men on the president's staff stands at $105,000, while the median salary for women is significantly lower at $84,000. It's worth noting that President Biden himself earns $400,000 annually.

Mark Perry, a scholar associated with the American Enterprise Institute, reportedly analysed the data and concluded that women working for the White House earn approximately 80 cents for every dollar earned by male staff members. Perry has a history of scrutinising White House salaries and found that during Donald Trump's tenure in 2017, the pay gap was 37 per cent, and it was nearly 11 per cent under Barack Obama's administration in 2016.

Composition effect

An analysis by The Wall Street Journal suggested that the primary cause of the gender pay gap within the Biden White House is a phenomenon known as the "composition effect." Despite there being more women (269) than men (179) employed at the White House, women are often concentrated in lower-paid positions, contributing to the observed pay gap.

Biden White House annual report shows 20% gender pay gap

Donald Trump's lead among likely Republican primary voters has increased, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis lags behind, according to a recent Siena College/New York Times poll.

Trump enjoys the support of 54 per cent of likely GOP voters, while DeSantis only garnered 17 per cent, leaving a significant 37 percentage point gap between the two.

This lead marks the largest margin Trump has achieved so far in the polls since mid-March, where he has consistently been the frontrunner.

Other potential Republican candidates in the running for the nomination, like former Vice President Mike Pence, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott each received 3 per cent support in the same poll.

Trump backed by a diverse group of voters

Interestingly, Trump's support extends across various demographic groups, including men and women, all age groups, income brackets, and geographical regions.

He also maintains backing from voters with diverse educational backgrounds and those identifying as liberal, moderate, and conservative Republicans.

Trump's campaign faces financial strain

As of the second half of the year, Donald Trump's political operations are facing financial strain, as tens of millions of dollars were spent on defending him from legal challenges while he aims to return to the White House.

During 2023, Trump received over $53 million in donations, driven by his criminal indictments in Florida and New York, which acted as a fundraising rallying cry.
Trump's chances against Biden

Thanks to the massive lead Trump has garnered against DeSantis, he nonetheless looks well-ready to take on incumbent President Joe Biden in the upcoming elections. But, in these polls, he might be facing a really tough competition.

A recent Times/Siena College poll has revealed that both Biden and Trump are tied at 43 per cent support, while 14 per cent of voters are yet to make up their minds about which candidate they deemed better.

Trump widens lead over DeSantis with record 54% support even as legal challenges mount

A report by the Wall Street Journal citing internal company communications, on Friday (July 28) said that Facebook removed content, including posts claiming the virus was man-made, from its social media platform after pressure from the White House. This comes a day after the United States President Joe Biden’s administration reaffirmed its position on social media content moderation.

Facebook asked to remove posts

In a leaked email procured by the WSJ, Nick Clegg, the company’s president of global affairs in July 2021 wrote, “Can someone quickly remind me why we were removing — rather than demoting/labeling — claims that Covid is man made.”

Subsequently, the Facebook vice president in charge of content policy wrote, “We were under pressure from the administration and others to do more,” referencing the Biden administration, as quoted by the WSJ. The VP added, “We shouldn’t have done it.”

The emails in question were exchanged months after the social media platform had decided to end its policy of banning certain posts questioning whether COVID-19 was the result of a leak from Chinese virology lab in Wuhan.

The WSJ also published an email that was circulated after Biden, in July 2021, accused platforms like Facebook of “killing people” by allowing so-called “misinformation” to propagate unchecked. The Facebook VP after a few days also circulated a memo that showed the difference between the company's content policies and the Biden administration’s demands.

“There is likely a significant gap between what the WH would like us to remove and what we are comfortable removing,” wrote the Facebook executive. The WSJ report citing an email from the VP further said that the White House also wanted the social media platform to take down humorous or satirical content that suggested the COVID-19 vaccines aren’t safe.

To which Clegg responded: “I can’t see Mark [Zuckerberg] in a million years being comfortable with removing that – and I wouldn’t recommend it.”

Furthermore, Facebook executives also expressed concerns that taking down posts showing American users reluctant about getting vaccinated could further fuel vaccine hesitancy and even warned that removing such posts could give rise to conspiracy theories, reported the WSJ.

‘Facebook files’

The report by the Journal also comes a day after the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee is in the midst of investigating what GOP lawmakers have claimed is the Biden administration’s unlawful censoring of users on social media.

The lawsuit was filed by Republican attorneys general of the US states of Missouri and Louisiana, in 2022, and accused the Biden administration of pressuring social media platforms to take down dissenting views, including criticism of mask mandates and objections to COVID-19 vaccination.

On Thursday, the GOP lawmaker from Ohio, Jim Jordan reasserted his claims of pressure on Facebook to censor conservative comments after he abruptly called off a vote Thursday to hold Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress.

In a series of tweets, Jordan revealed what he claimed were “never-before-released” documents contained in the House Judiciary Committee’s subpoena, which he called “Facebook files” and asserted “that Facebook and Instagram censored posts”.

Jordan also claimed that the alleged censorship and change in content moderation policies of the social media platform were changed due to “unconstitutional pressure” from the Biden administration.

One of these emails was written in April 2021, when a Facebook employee circulated an email for Facebook CEO Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg, writing: “We are facing continued pressure from external stakeholders, including the [Biden] White House” to remove posts.

White House reaffirms stance

Meanwhile, the White House, on Thursday said that the discussions with social media companies were aimed at protecting public health, safety, and security during a pandemic.

“We have consistently made clear that we believe social media companies have a critical responsibility to take account of the effects that their platforms have on the American people, while making independent decisions about the content of their platforms,” said the White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre.

She added, “That continues to be the case. That has not changed, on what we believe here.”

The White House clarified that President Joe Biden will not pardon his son, Hunter Biden, who pleaded not guilty to two tax charges in court.

At a briefing, the press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked: “From a presidential perspective, is there any possibility that the president would end up pardoning his son?”

“No,” Jean-Pierre replied.

Pressed, she said: “I just said no. I answered.”

The charges against Hunter Biden were both misdemeanours, and he was expected to plead guilty as part of a deal with federal prosecutors that included a pre-trial diversion programme for the felony guns charge.

However, a question from the judge led to the delay of the deal.

Republicans accuse Joe Biden of corruption

Republicans have raised concerns about Hunter Biden's business affairs and personal struggles with addiction, using them to level accusations of corruption against President Biden and even calling for his impeachment, as reported by Reuters.

The controversial use of pardon power

The pardon power, established via Article 2 of the US Constitution, grants the president the authority to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.

Over the years, the use of the pardon power has become increasingly controversial, with some presidents like Bill Clinton and Donald Trump bestowing pardons and acts of clemency on donors and supporters.

Trump's legal battles and pardoning prospect

Trump currently faces 71 criminal indictments and may seek to draw out these legal battles in hopes of securing a pardon, either during his own run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 or under another Republican president.

Presidential pardons do not extend to state-level indictments, meaning Trump faces 34 criminal charges in New York related to hush-money payments and potential charges in Georgia over election subversion in 2020.

Biden's approach to pardon power

President Biden has used the pardon power sparingly, primarily focusing on convictions for offences related to drugs.
