West Asia's war hits global arts: The concerts and events cancelled in 2026

Seven months into widening global conflict and West Asian tensions, India continues to manage supply disruptions through strategic energy maneuvering. Russia has solidified its position as India's top crude supplier, with imports reaching record levels in July and accounting for over 50% of the country's seaborne crude intake. Facing potential supply bottlenecks along Red Sea transit routes and Saudi export pipelines, Indian refiners are leveraging flexible spot purchases and discounted Russian grades to buffer against global price shocks and domestic demand pressures.

The military conflict involving Iran has triggered a dramatic restructuring of the global liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market. Critical shipping disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz—the vital transit corridor for West Asian energy exports—have forced major Asian economies to secure alternative cooking gas and industrial fuel supplies. The United States has emerged as the principal beneficiary of this trade shift, as American LPG shipments surge toward energy-hungry markets in India and China to fill the supply gap created by Middle Eastern geopolitical turmoil.

Iran has warned neighbouring countries against joining what Tehran describes as a US economic war, threatening action against countries that participate in Washington's campaign to isolate the Iranian economy.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei reportedly issued the warning on state television, saying countries that impose economic restrictions on Iran would be considered enemies.

He warned that Tehran would first seek negotiations with such countries and urge them to distance themselves from Washington. However, he said Iran could target the interests of countries that refuse to change course.

Rezaei also said Iran had so far focused its attacks on US military bases rather than American economic interests. But he warned that further US sanctions could lead Iran to target American oil and economic companies in the region and elsewhere.

US President Donald Trump has meanwhile threatened severe economic consequences for countries providing what he described as a lifeline to Iran.

Iran Warns US Allies Over Sanctions As Hormuz Tensions And Regional Crisis Escalate

Iran's missile campaign is putting growing pressure on US military operations across West Asia, while Washington weighs its next move and President Donald Trump turns increasingly toward economic pressure and sanctions.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has become a central focus of the conflict, with questions emerging over resupply, deployment pressures and the ability of US forces to sustain extended operations in the region.

The conflict has also placed major pressure on American logistics infrastructure. Following attacks on key regional facilities, US forces have reportedly had to rely on alternative supply routes, including facilities farther from the Gulf.

Iranian missile attacks have forced US commanders to protect military bases, naval vessels and logistics hubs across the region, while American warships continue moving through strategically important waters.

Iran executed a man on Sunday (August 23) accused of carrying a chainsaw during January anti-government protests. He was charged with acting as an agent of the United States and Israel. The judiciary stated that the accused, identified as Majid Adineh, had been convicted of "operational action in favour of hostile groups" in nationwide rallies that erupted late last year. He is among several individuals executed in connection with the unrest, which stemmed from economic hardships in Iran. According to a report published Sunday by the judiciary's Mizan Online outlet, Adineh faced charges of deliberate arson, along with gathering and collusion to commit crimes against the country's internal security. "Based on numerous documents and evidence in the case and the defendant's statements, the Karaj Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death and confiscation of all his property." His appeal was rejected, with the Supreme Court affirming the original ruling, and the sentence was carried out on Sunday morning, per Mizan. Also read: US to make $850mn payment out of its $4bn+ outstanding UN dues
Unrest began in 2025
Mizan also reported that Adineh and a second suspect were detained on January 9 in Alborz province, located west of Tehran, and were found in possession of a handgun, ammunition, two stun guns, two canisters of tear gas, a battery-powered chainsaw, and gasoline. Iran executes man over accusation of aiding US, Israel during anti-govt protests: More details inside

The US Army has decided to phase out a drone unit that was studying and incorporating lessons from foreign wars. The move also includes the use of uncrewed systems in the Russia-Ukraine war. The infantry battalion, known as the Unmanned Assault Battalion, is set to participate in the Joint Multinational Readiness Centre in the coming days in Germany. In response, the official confirmed that the battalion will “refocus on its core warfighting tasks as an airborne infantry battalion assigned to a Mobile Brigade Combat Team (Airborne),” after the exercises. It also said that the US Army Europe and Africa, with the Army and U.S. European Command's backup, tasked the infantry battalion to prototype an employment concept for a tactical unmanned systems battalion. The unit had also been backed by Gen. Chris Donahue, former commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, whose ouster by Hegseth in July split opinion among Republican lawmakers in Congress. The Army declined to respond to The Hill's request for comment. Military experts criticised the move to phase out the unit, noting that Ukraine serves as a live "battle lab" for understanding how drone warfare is reshaping modern combat, home to some of the world's most seasoned drone operators, who continue refining their tactics under constant Russian assault. Also read: ‘She has no official role’: Questions mount after Hegseth’s wife attended sensitive Pentagon meeting on Ukraine “The U.S. is behind in adopting and fielding small drones. In the Middle East, that challenge is largely defending static bases against long-range one-way-attack … drones. But in Europe, the counterdrone challenge is much greater,” and includes defending against smaller first-person view drones, McMillan, now a senior research analyst at the Centre on Military and Political Power at the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, said on Thursday. “This drone unit was designed to incorporate and apply desperately needed lessons learned from Ukraine to help the U.S. Army adapt to this challenge, "McMillan added. US Army to phase out unit tasked with adapting drone lessons from Russia-Ukraine war: Here's why

The West Asia conflict is approaching its sixth month with no clear diplomatic or military exit in sight as US President Donald Trump dramatically escalates pressure on Iran. Trump has announced what he described as an unprecedented economic warfare and isolation campaign against Iran, warning that countries continuing to do business with Tehran could face “tremendous punishment.”

The latest escalation comes amid a growing dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes. Trump says the waterway remains open and that numerous vessels are passing through, while Iranian officials maintain that the strait remains closed until Washington meets Tehran’s conditions.

Iran has demanded an end to the blockade of its ports, the lifting of oil sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets. Meanwhile, US-Iran negotiations remain uncertain, with Trump saying talks could resume at some point but reiterating that Iran must not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.

Trump Launches “Economic Warfare” Against Iran As Strait Of Hormuz Crisis Deepens

US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper visited the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea during a 10-day tour of the Middle East that concluded on Saturday, as the US military's war with Iran and wider regional tensions continued to dominate developments. Cooper's visit came amid reports of mental health concerns and supply problems aboard the aircraft carrier. The Lincoln arrived in the Middle East in January and has been supporting the US military campaign against Iran, including operations linked to the blockade of Iranian ports. The carrier has spent more than 240 consecutive days at sea, setting a record. Its extended deployment has renewed concerns about the impact of prolonged operations on both the ship and its more than 5,000 sailors and Marines. In a statement issued on Saturday, Cooper described the deployment as historic, saying, “History will record this deployment as one of the most operationally intense and consequential of the modern era.” According to Central Command, Cooper also visited Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where he met civilian and military leaders. The US Navy's blockade followed Iran's declaration of control over the Strait of Hormuz after the war started on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes. Before the conflict, roughly one-fifth of the world's traded oil and natural gas passed through the strategic waterway at the entrance to the Persian Gulf.Diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran have stalled. Lebanese authorities and the country's state news agency reported that at least 11 people were killed in two separate attacks. The strikes were described as the deadliest since a truce between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese group, took effect in June. Israel's military said early Sunday that a later strike killed Abu Hassan Alaa, whom it described as a senior Hezbollah commander. Israel said he had participated in attacks against Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon and had led militants involved in attacks targeting Israeli soldiers and civilians over several years. Earlier, the Israeli military said a strike in Ansar killed Ali Samir Al-Haj Hassan, whom it also identified as a Hezbollah commander. The military said his family was present but was not targeted. The developments come after Israel and Lebanon announced a framework agreement in late June outlining a potential Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in return for Hezbollah's disarmament. The proposed framework also envisages steps toward an eventual peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which remain technically at war nearly eight decades after Israel's establishment. Hezbollah has rejected direct negotiations and was not a party to the US-mediated agreement. Also Read: Wildfires rage across Greece and Croatia as tourists flee; firefighters battle flames and smoke
Hamas delegation arrives in Cairo for Gaza ceasefire talks
A Hamas delegation led by group leader Khalil al-Hayya arrived in Cairo on Sunday for talks related to a Gaza ceasefire, Hamas said. Egyptian state-run media reported that al-Hayya met Major General Hassan Rashad, head of Egypt's intelligence service. Al-Qahera News television said al-Hayya reaffirmed Hamas' commitment to implementing US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan 'to end the suffering of the residents of the Gaza Strip and to begin the reconstruction process'. The discussions came as mediators worked to advance a roadmap involving the disarmament of Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the transfer of administrative authority to Palestinian technocrats. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected Trump's latest proposal to revive the stalled ceasefire process. Netanyahu has said Israel will not withdraw from the roughly 60 per cent of Gaza it currently controls until Hamas is completely disarmed. Hamas, which controls the remaining territory, has long opposed disarmament. It was unclear whether al-Hayya would meet Trump's son-in-law and negotiator Jared Kushner, Board of Peace high representative Nickolay Mladenov, or executive board member and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The three are expected to travel to Israel and Egypt this week.
Iran and Qatar dispute claims over missing pilots
In another development, Iran accused Qatar of holding three Iranian pilots whose aircraft were downed in March. Qatar rejected the allegation. Iran's Armed Forces General Staff's Missing Persons Committee said Qatar's armed forces had captured and were holding the three pilots, who went missing after their jets were shot down in March. Iranian state television reported Sunday that the committee's commander had called on Qatar to allow Iranian Air Force experts to conduct an investigation at the site. In a statement released Saturday, the committee claimed the pilots had not been permitted to communicate with their families or Iranian officials involved in their cases. Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari denied the allegation. In a post on X, he said the pilots had been shot down and that Qatari search-and-rescue teams had recovered the remains of one of them. The developments come as the Iran war continues to reshape the security situation across the Middle East, with the US military presence, the Strait of Hormuz, Israel-Hezbollah tensions, Gaza ceasefire negotiations and the Iran-Qatar dispute emerging as key regional flashpoints.

Iran and Qatar dispute claims over missing pilots In another development, Iran accused Qatar of holding three Iranian pilots whose aircraft were downed in March.

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye have signed a new defence pact, the “Mecca Joint Defence Agreement”, aiming to deepen security cooperation amid increasing military tensions and conflicts in the Middle East. The signed agreement means that an attack on one country would be treated as an attack on all three. The pact brings together the financial strength of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan’s nuclear and military capabilities and defence technology, as well as Türkiye's military experience. The pact has also renewed discussion about the possibility of an “Islamic NATO” and its impact on the regional balance of power.
Why defence partnership signed at this point?
The development comes amid increasing military tensions and conflicts in the Middle East threatening the sovereignty and security of these nations. It has been signed with the focus on strengthening their collective security and promoting peace and stability along with security in the region and beyond. After the deal, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry announced that the pact meant an attack on any member would be considered as an attack on all, and added that it was “intended to strengthen collective deterrence”. The ongoing conflict in West Asia has imperilled the oil exports of Saudi Arabia and its ambitious development plans, raising serious questions about the reliability of its longstanding US security umbrella. Meanwhile, Turkiye and Pakistan have skipped significant direct attacks in the ongoing conflicts, but both nations are eager to calm regional conflicts that threaten their security and economies. The development will not safeguard each other, but it will also stitch together a web of partnerships which will help shift regional threats away from relying on any single partner or bloc. Also read: US is burning through its arsenal in Iran. As a nuclear-armed, Muslim-majority nation, Pakistan gains added regional prestige and influence valuable for reshaping its global image away from associations with repression and terrorism. The deal could also strengthen ties with Washington, since the Trump administration favours greater burden-sharing among key allies and is likely to welcome a pact aimed at boosting collective regional deterrence, particularly against Iran, according to media reports. For Turkey, this expands an existing network of alliances with Qatar, Syria, and Libya, reinforcing a broader Muslim collective defence framework and the principle that outside powers shouldn't unilaterally alter regional political orders. While Saudi Arabia gains leverage against Iran and Pakistan against India, Turkey benefits from added deterrence against Israel amid rising tensions. The Doha airstrike has heightened regional interest in collective air defence against both Iran and Israel. Each country stands to gain militarily and diplomatically, with Turkish defence industries poised for commercial growth, and the agreement strengthening Turkey's role in India-Europe trade networks. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's new security pact with Turkey strengthens its regional leverage amid an emboldened Iran and limits on US deterrence, positioning Riyadh as a stabilising regional leader. Like its existing defence agreements with Pakistan and the GCC, this deal is unlikely to guarantee a NATO-style collective response, though it may offer diplomatic advantages, as seen when Riyadh used its Pakistan ties to shape Iran-related negotiations. The move signals Saudi Arabia stepping back from seeking a binding US security guarantee, though it doesn't reject the US partnership, potentially aligning with Washington's shift toward a regional "integrator" role.

Iran and Oman have reached an understanding on the geographic coordinates for a shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, and ‌a joint announcement is being finalised, provided certain third parties did not interfere, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Wednesday.
Baghaei added that any such agreement between Iran and Oman would not, by itself, guarantee security in the strategic waterway.

West Asia war: Proposed Iran-Oman deal could reshape Hormuz control

Tensions in West Asia have surged again after Iran launched a surprise strike on a U.S. military base in Jordan, ending days of relative calm and signaling what analysts believe is a major shift in Tehran's military strategy.

Unlike previous exchanges, Iran struck first instead of waiting for another U.S. attack. Experts suggest Tehran may now prefer a controlled, low-intensity conflict over a prolonged ceasefire that leaves sanctions and economic isolation unchanged.

The conflict is also reshaping global energy markets, with rising oil prices potentially benefiting countries like Russia, while China continues to strengthen its position in global energy and diplomacy.

Meanwhile, the human cost continues to rise. Reports indicate that 16 Indian nationals, including several seafarers, have lost their lives amid the ongoing regional conflict.

Iran Launches Surprise Strike on U.S. Base in Jordan | West Asia War Escalates | US- Iran War

Egypt is caught in a precarious geopolitical squeeze, balancing delicate diplomatic relations while facing severe economic fallout from escalating conflicts in West Asia. With vital revenue streams from the Suez Canal plunging due to regional maritime security threats, soaring energy import bills, and mounting pressure from international financial frameworks, Cairo faces an immense fiscal price for a wider war.

Egypt's balancing act & price for a wider war in West Asia

The conflict in West Asia has intensified once again as the United States launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iran, following Tehran's missile attacks targeting American bases in Jordan. The renewed escalation comes after nearly a week-long pause in hostilities, raising fresh concerns over regional stability. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were carried out in response to attempted Iranian attacks on US forces stationed across the region. Iran confirmed launching ballistic missiles toward US positions in Jordan, while the US said all incoming missiles were successfully intercepted.

US-Iran Conflict Escalates: Fresh Strikes, Missile Attacks and Rising West Asia Tensions

The war in West Asia is entering a dangerous new phase as the conflict spreads beyond Iran and Israel, drawing more countries into the escalating crisis. Egypt has reported a drone attack near its strategic Mediterranean port of Damietta, while the United States and Saudi Arabia have jointly launched airstrikes against Iran-backed armed groups in eastern Iraq. The latest developments come after Washington resumed military strikes on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with fresh attacks across the region.

According to reports, Jordan intercepted missiles fired from Iran, while Kuwait reported that an Iranian strike hit a building belonging to a Chinese company, resulting in casualties. Meanwhile, Egypt's Damietta Port, a key energy and shipping hub, was targeted in a drone attack that damaged gas-related infrastructure, raising fresh concerns over the security of global energy supply routes.

Kuwait's defence ministry claimed on Thursday (July 30) that an Iranian strike that hit a building belonging to a Chinese company in the northern region of the country had killed one person. Ministry spokesperson Colonel Saud Abdulaziz al-Atwan stated that officials responded soon after the strike and began handling the incident in coordination with relevant agencies. Kuwait’s armed forces also confirmed that they remained prepared to protect the country’s sovereignty, security and residents. Shortly afterwards, the naval branch of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that it had intercepted and detained three "offending" oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts noted that the combined actions in Jordan and the Strait suggested Iran was moving beyond merely reacting to US pressure, instead attempting to take control of the situation and steer the direction of the broader confrontation. Political analyst Ruhollah Rahimpour said the launch of the overnight missile and the Hormuz operation indicates a deliberate strategy of escalation. "I think last night's missile operations in Jordan and the Strait of Hormuz are part of the Islamic Republic's strategy of escalating tensions and trying to accelerate a full-scale war with the United States and Israel, forcing them into conflict before they are fully prepared," he said. Despite this fresh escalation, Trump maintained that negotiations with Tehran would continue. The day before, he had told Fox News that talks were proceeding well, though he cautioned that without an agreement, the US could target Iran's underground sites, bridges, and power infrastructure.

US people are neither considering the prediction of President Donald Trump about the Iran war that is about to end, nor do they believe that Iran has lost the will or the means to keep fighting. UN Ambassador Mike Waltz speculated that he would not commit to the war ending before the end of 2026. "I'm not going to put some kind of timeline on it,” said Waltz. Waltz's statement followed after Trump denied the idea of further negotiations with Iran, allowing the war to resume at full strength after a 60-day extension of the ceasefire between both the nations dissolved earlier this month. Iran has warned that any renewed US military strikes, especially alongside Israel, could trigger a wider regional conflict across West Asia. The warning comes ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington, as tensions continue to rise. Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthi rebels launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities in Jazan and Yanbu, threatening key global energy routes. The conflict has raised concerns over the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and global oil supplies, while Iran insists that diplomacy—not military escalation is the only path forward.

Iran-US Conflict Update | Houthis Target Saudi Arabia | Ukraine Accuses Russia | Spain Wildfires

The Iran-backed Houthis claimed on Saturday (July 25) that they targeted Saudi Aramco facilities in Jazan and Yanbu with missiles and drones, in response to the Saudi-led strikes on Houthi-held areas along the Red Sea coast of Yemen. However, Saudi Arabia has not yet confirmed the attack on facilities despite several videos and images. Jazan is home to a major oil refinery, while Yanbu functions as a key export point on the Red Sea, enabling Saudi crude to avoid the Strait of Hormuz altogether. Given that Hormuz is already strained, targeting Yanbu puts at risk the very alternative route Saudi Arabia has come to rely on for keeping oil exports flowing.

These strikes come on the heels of the first Saudi-led airstrikes against the Houthis since the 2022 ceasefire, heightening concerns that the broader Iran conflict may be reigniting the Saudi-Houthi confrontation in Yemen. Also read: Takaichi's £1.7tn spending plan sparks fears of 'Liz Truss-style' shock: How will it impact Japan, China and India?
Houthi shoots down Saudi drone
Later in the day, Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed that they shot down a Saudi drone over the northwest of Yemen. It comes a day after the Yemeni group claimed it attacked oil facilities in the Gulf kingdom. The Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group "successfully shot down a Turkish-made... armed reconnaissance drone belonging to the Saudi enemy while it was conducting hostile operations". Meanwhile, Iran stated on Sunday (July 26) that it has stopped retaliatory attacks in the region after the United States halted its strikes on the country for the past two nights. "These attacks continued until two nights ago, but over the past two nights the Americans have stopped their attacks," said army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia. "Since... our strategy has essentially been retaliatory, we have also halted our retaliatory operations."

These strikes come on the heels of the first Saudi-led airstrikes against the Houthis since the 2022 ceasefire, heightening concerns that the broader Iran conflict may be reigniting the Saudi-Houthi confrontation in Yemen.

Iran Warns of Wider West Asia War | Zelenskyy Accuses Russia | India Issues Black Sea Advisory

India's energy priorities are undergoing a fundamental shift amid the ongoing West Asia war, which has triggered a global energy crisis, hitting the economy after key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb have been disrupted. This route marks the world's busiest oil shipping channels, providing passage for about 20 per cent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). However, the Indian government has opted for second and eco-friendly options to meet energy needs for different sectors in order to reduce dependency. For several years, India's focus has always remained on securing adequate fuel supplies, including coal, oil and natural gas, to power its growing economy. Today, that development has moved decisively toward the grid and other renewable sources of energy to generate electricity, which scales up faster than the infrastructure needed to carry it. In the recent past, India's rapid renewable energy expansion has begun to outpace its transmission and evacuation infrastructure, with the government estimating a need for more than 61,000 circuit kilometres of additional inter-state transmission capacity by 2029-30. Industry analysts note that around 50 GW of renewable energy capacity remains stranded across India due to transmission bottlenecks, leading to cost overruns and delayed returns. Against this backdrop, energy sector leaders are increasingly emphasising that generation and grid infrastructure must be planned together rather than in isolation. Narayan Kumar, CEO, Kshema Power India, said, "For decades, India's energy security was defined by one question: Do we have enough fuel to power the nation's growth? Coal, oil, and natural gas dominated the conversation, with energy security focused on ensuring reliable fuel supplies and reducing dependence on imports. Today, India's energy transition has entered a new phase. As renewable energy becomes the backbone of the country's power mix, the focus is shifting from securing fuel to securing the grid. The challenge is no longer just generating clean energy but ensuring it is transmitted efficiently, integrated seamlessly, and delivered reliably to consumers." He added that India has achieved a remarkable journey in expanding wind and solar capacity. However, renewable sources of energy are fundamentally different from conventional power generation. Kumar noted that Wind and solar projects are always situated in resource-rich regions, quite distant from industrial hubs and urban demand centres. Even the most efficient renewable projects cannot work at their complete potential, without strong networks for transmission, substations, and power evacuation infrastructure. Also read: EXPLAINED: Why crude oil shocks hit India harder than other major economies — And how can it change? "This is where grid security becomes central to India's clean energy future. A resilient grid is not merely a network of transmission lines; it is an intelligent system capable of managing variable renewable generation, maintaining grid stability, and delivering uninterrupted power. Investments in transmission corridors, modern substations, digital monitoring, and smart grid technologies are no longer supporting initiatives—they are strategic national priorities," he added. "At Kshema Power, we have witnessed this transformation firsthand. Through the execution of more than 5.2 GW of renewable energy infrastructure globally, including over 4.5 GW of wind EPC projects, 2,000 kilometres of power transmission lines, and 2,400 MVA of substation capacity, one lesson has become increasingly clear: renewable energy generation and transmission cannot be planned in isolation. They must evolve together. Every transmission line commissioned enables renewable power to reach the grid. Every substation strengthens network reliability. Every integrated EPC project helps accelerate India's clean energy transition. As project scales continue to grow, timely execution, engineering excellence, and coordinated infrastructure planning will determine how quickly renewable energy can be integrated into the national grid," Narayan Kumar added. Narayan Kumar went on to note that success in India's energy transition going forward won't simply be judged by the volume of renewable megawatts added, but by how robust, resilient, and smart the infrastructure connecting that power to end users truly is. While fuel security once formed the bedrock of India's economic development, he said grid security will now determine the country's path toward a sustainable future. He stressed that balanced investment in both renewable generation and transmission capacity is key to building a power system that's dependable, forward-looking, and equipped to meet the nation's long-term energy goals, adding that the real measure of progress isn't just generating more clean energy, but making sure it reliably and efficiently reaches its destination at scale.
Fuel supplies to securing the electricity grid
Highlighting a decades-long objective, Pawan Kumar Garg, Founder & Joint Managing Director, Fujiyama Power Systems, stated that India's energy strategy was driven by fuel security, as providing reliable access to coal, oil and natural gas was essential to power economic growth. He noted that India's energy transition has entered a new phase. As renewable energy capacity accelerates, the focus is shifting from securing fuel supplies to securing the electricity grid itself. "India has already crossed a major milestone, with nearly half of its installed power capacity coming from non-fossil fuel sources. The target of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030 is now within reach. But adding renewable generation alone will not guarantee energy security. The real challenge lies in integrating intermittent solar and wind power while maintaining a stable, resilient and affordable grid," he said. "The government has seen this. Take action. They have started something called Viability Gap Funding to help with the cost of storing energy in batteries. This makes it easier for people to start projects that use power and store energy because it used to be very expensive. Now, when the government asks people to build power projects, they also want them to include a way to store energy in batteries. This means that people are planning how to make energy and store it at the time," he added. Pawan Kumar Garg, meanwhile, pointed to the growing adoption of rooftop solar panels as a shift already reshaping how power is accessed. He explained that generating electricity at home cuts down on the energy typically lost during long-distance transmission and eases pressure on the grid during peak demand periods. According to Garg, households with solar panels are gaining greater control over their own energy needs rather than relying entirely on external supply, a trend turning more homes into power producers in their own right. He emphasised that grid security isn't about a single investment area but requires a systems-level approach, encompassing storage, transmission, digital forecasting, and decentralised generation working in tandem. "India is changing the way it uses energy. We are not just replacing fuels with clean energy. We are building a new power system. This system needs to be able to support a big economy, one that is worth $10 trillion. At the same time, it needs to make sure that industries, businesses and households always have electricity. Grid security is the key to India being independent when it comes to energy. Grid security is what will really make this happen. Grid security is the foundation of India's energy independence," he further said.

From fuel security to grid security: The next chapter of India's energy transition

Iran has issued a fresh warning against the United Kingdom, threatening to target RAF Fairford after accusing Britain of assisting US military strikes on Iranian territory. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared that any military base used to launch attacks on Iran is now a legitimate target. The warning comes after reports that a US Air Force B-1 bomber departed from RAF Fairford, a major American forward operating base in England, fueling speculation over Britain's role in the escalating West Asia conflict.

Iran threatens UK airbase after US Strikes | RAF Fairford faces warning as Middle East war escalates

The US-Iran conflict has entered a dangerous new phase as American forces carried out their 11th consecutive night of strikes on Iranian military targets. Iran responded with fresh regional attacks while tensions spread across Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump warned that Washington is "not finished" with Iran and threatened further strikes on fortified nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, the Houthis' blockade threats and disruptions to global shipping continue raising fears of a wider regional war and an energy crisis.

Rising global crude oil prices have once again brought the economic conditions of India under pressure. The rise in oil prices is being driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, escalating concerns over disruptions in oil supplies. Given that India imports over 85 per cent of its crude oil needs, higher prices can push the import bill of the country, widen the current account deficit, put pressure on the rupee, and add fuel to inflation. Simultaneously, oil marketing companies (OMCs) may experience pressure on their margins if domestic retail fuel prices are not revised in line with global rates. This leaves the government to balance inflation control, consumer relief and fiscal stability.
Why does India feel global oil shocks more?
After the pandemic began in 2019, the prices of crude oil have swung dramatically on the world stage. After averaging US$59 per barrel in 2019-20, prices dropped to US$44 per barrel in 2020-21 as pandemic-driven lockdowns curbed global activity. As economies reopened and demand rebounded, prices then jumped roughly 79% to US$78 per barrel in 2021-22, climbing further to US$93 per barrel in 2022-23. The combined effect of lingering pandemic disruptions, sustained geopolitical strain from the Russia-Ukraine war, and sanctions on Russian oil exports drove a sharp spike in price volatility. From levels above US$90 per barrel in 2023-24, international crude prices subsequently slipped below US$70 per barrel starting in 2025-26. As a net importer, India has consistently remained exposed to the unpredictability of global oil markets, prompting the government to repeatedly step into the domestic fuel market to cushion the economy from the inflationary and output-related fallout of rising oil prices. Soon after the outbreak of the US–Iran conflict in February 2026 and subsequent disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz has massively triggered a sharp global crude oil price shock was triggered, delivering a significant macroeconomic blow to India. Also read: Are you an American and planning to visit Middle East? The SATAT initiative (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) has specifically been launched to promote Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) as an automotive fuel. 3. Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP) This has emerged as a flagship measure; as of September 2024, India's ethanol blending programme has saved over US$12.80 billion in foreign exchange while providing US$10.89 billion to farmers over the last decade. 4. Diversifying the basket To reduce over-reliance on any single region (particularly the geopolitically volatile Middle East), the government has focused on insulating common citizens from high international prices by diversifying the crude import basket and invoking Universal Service Obligation provisions to ensure availability of petrol and diesel in the domestic market. 5. Consumer relief measures When global prices spike, the government has previously used tax levers — reducing Central Excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 13/litre and Rs 16/litre respectively across two tranches in November 2021 and May 2022, fully passed on to consumers, with some states also cutting VAT. 6. Renewable energy & EV push Longer-term structural shifts include expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure, with India targeting 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030 through schemes like PM-KUSUM, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, and the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Despite these measures, dependence on crude oil has risen sharply, increasing imports from 189 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 243 million tonnes in 2024-25, with import dependence rising from 84 per cent to around 90 per cent over the same period. In addition, India's crude oil import bill increased to approximately $50 billion in the June quarter of 2026, a 60 per cent jump from a year earlier, as the war in West Asia ended discounts that once cushioned the country's energy costs. The government data indicated that the world's third-largest oil importer paid $49.8 billion for crude in the April-June period.
