The investment comes as&nbsp;Warner&nbsp;Bros Discovery's California production has been hit with the first joint strike&nbsp;of writers&nbsp;and actors&nbsp;in 63 years, delaying major projects and prompting it to slash revenue forecasts for the rest of this year.

The Leavesden project's construction is due to start in the second quarter of 2024, with completion in 2027 and will bring the facility's total stages to 29 from 19 currently.

This move resulted in a staggering loss of nearly $25 billion from the company's market capitalisation. Numerous projects, such as Batgirl (a $90 million film) and Scoob! Holiday Haunt, were&nbsp;either close to completion or in advanced stages of post-production, but were axed anyway. Cancelling a movie like Batgirl, featuring acclaimed directors like Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah at the helm, an undeniable popular appeal that is inherent in comic-book superheroes, and finally a cast with names like Leslie Grace, Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser, and JK Simmons is unprecedented.

Earlier, before Zaslav's time, Christopher Nolan, for whom Warner Bros had been a home for nearly more than 17 years, chose to quit after the studio announced in 2021 that it will release every big screen project on both HBO Max and in theatres. Apart from Nolan, many other filmmakers took exception to the decision. Now, Zaslav's actions may have further exacerbated the discontent among filmmakers and industry professionals.&nbsp;

The challenge in front of Iron Man&nbsp;was also The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan's grownup-oriented Bat-movie was more of a crime thriller than a full-fledged superhero pic. But the Dark Knight trilogy, featuring Christian Bale in the role, was its own self-contained universe. And it was not until Man of Steel that DC really dipped its toes in the water of a unified cinematic universe populated by several superheroes.

Starring Henry Cavill in the role of Superman, the film was a standalone that was supposed to eventually lead to the formation of the Justice League. But the film was poorly received, as Snyder's gloomier Superman was rejected by fans. The film was a decent commercial success and received mixed critical reviews. The next two releases — Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad —were even more heavily panned by critics and disappointed at the box office as well. That is when the former had the main trinity of DC superheroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman.

The actual budget then is much higher)&nbsp;. It prompted execs at Warner Bros to overhaul the structure of DC Films, the studio in charge of DC adaptations, just one of many since then. After that, DC films have been more successful, with hits like Aquaman and Shazam!, but there have been setbacks too mainly due to the regimes that keep changing and that are evermore capricious.&nbsp;

The challenge in front of Iron Man was also The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan's grownup-oriented Bat-movie was more of a crime thriller than a full-fledged superhero pic. But the Dark Knight trilogy, featuring Christian Bale in the role, was its own self-contained universe. And it was not until Man of Steel that DC really dipped its toes in the water of a unified cinematic universe populated by several superheroes. Starring Henry Cavill in the role of Superman, the film was a standalone that was supposed to eventually lead to the formation of the Justice League. But the film was poorly received, as Snyder's gloomier Superman was rejected by fans. The film was a decent commercial success and received mixed critical reviews. The next two releases — Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad —were even more heavily panned by critics and disappointed at the box office as well. That is when the former had the main trinity of DC superheroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. Then came Wonder Woman in 2017, a more hopeful and sunny superhero movie starring Gal Gadot, which pleased both audiences and critics. However, whatever goodwill Wonder Woman had generated evaporated with Justice League later, a bastardised product with two competing visions of Snyder, who had to quit the production midway after a family tragedy, and Joss Whedon, who had directed the first two Avengers movies for rival Marvel Studios and was brought to finish the film. The film was a spectacular failure, grossing about $650 million on a budget of an incredible $350 million (the vagaries of film economics mean that the original budget does not include promotional and marketing costs, and the cut of theatre chains. The actual budget then is much higher) . It prompted execs at Warner Bros to overhaul the structure of DC Films, the studio in charge of DC adaptations, just one of many since then. After that, DC films have been more successful, with hits like Aquaman and Shazam!, but there have been setbacks too mainly due to the regimes that keep changing and that are evermore capricious. While James Gunn, a filmmaker with a perfect track record in superhero cinema, is now at the helm of DC Studios, the entity that replaced DC Films, the future is still uncertain. The Flash, the latest release, is proving to be another expensive ($200mn) disaster. Gunn is building out a whole new DC Universe, which brings together cinema, television, animation, and gaming to tell one big, cohesive story. But it might be too late. "We don't want to do direct-to-streaming movies," said Zaslav, whose predecessor was slammed for releasing Warner films directly onto its streaming platform HBO Max –- recently rebranded as Max.

"We're in no rush to bring the movies to Max." 
 
Across a two-and-a-half-hour presentation, Zaslav and fellow Warner bosses brought out A-list stars including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya.

Robbie and Gosling co-star in Barbie,&nbsp;out July 21, which finds the ubiquitous blonde doll living in a dreamlike, pink-hued world, before one day starting to question her too-perfect reality and travelling to real-life Los Angeles.

"Everyone knows Barbie, and she's never been on the big screen before," said director Greta Gerwig, who drew inspiration from "The Wizard of Oz" as well as disco music culture.&nbsp;

"They made life-size Barbie houses... everything was extraordinary," she said.&nbsp;

Gosling said making the film was "like a fever dream," explaining: "I was living my life, and then one day I was bleaching my hair, shaving my legs and wearing bespoke neon outfits and rollerblading down Venice Beach." 
 
Oprah Winfrey took to the stage to introduce her and Steven Spielberg's new version of The Color Purple,&nbsp;out Christmas Day.

The movie is based on the Broadway musical adaptation of Alice Walker's novel about Black women enduring trauma, sexual abuse and racism in the rural Deep South in the early 20th century.

"The reason why it's not your mama's Color Purple&nbsp;-- but your mama's gonna really like it -- is because the musical factor is so dynamic, and the magical realism is so perfected here," said Winfrey.

Winfrey starred in the previous 1985 film, earning an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress, and is a producer on the new version.

Chalamet introduced footage from two new films in which he stars.

He appears in Wonka,&nbsp;set for December release, as a young, idealistic version of Roald Dahl's famous chocolatier, whose efforts to launch a magical candy empire are blocked by a sinister "chocolate cartel."

Chalamet described the "bizarre" process of shooting the origin story -- which involved "a lot of swimming in pools of actual chocolate."

He also returns for Dune: Part Two,&nbsp;the second and final part of Denis Villeneuve's Oscar-winning adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel, which is due out in November.

Austin Butler, Lea Seydoux, Christopher Walken and Florence Pugh join the cast for a sequel that Villeneuve described as an "action-packed epic war movie."

"As a spinoff, this is a strong opening," David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research said, adding that it was a "positive and steady step forward for DC Comics," the generator of many superhero films.

In a distant second was another new release, Universal's 'Ticket to Paradise,'&nbsp;at $16.3 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period. Released earlier abroad, it has already taken in $80 million outside North America.

"This is a very good domestic opening for a romantic comedy," Gross said.&nbsp;

It stars two of Hollywood's biggest stars, George Clooney and Julia Roberts, as a bickering, divorced couple who fly to Hawaii to try to sabotage their daughter's wedding.&nbsp;

With Halloween approaching, the next two films were both horror specials.

Paramount's 'Smile'&nbsp;dropped one spot from last weekend to third, taking in $8.4 million. Sosie Bacon plays a therapist whose grasp on reality is shaken by a horrifying event.

Warner Bros Discovery, the new entity that emerged after Warner Bros and Discovery, Inc merged together, has landed in fresh trouble. As per The Wrap, a lawsuit has alleged that Warner Bros, the home of franchises like DC and 'Harry Potter', cooked the subscriber base of streaming service HBO Max by as much as 10 million in order to mislead shareholders and get a higher rate for the merger. The act violates the Securities Act, the lawsuit added. As per the publication, the lawsuit was filed last Friday in New York by Collinsville Police Pension Board, a shareholder&nbsp;of WBD.

Warner Bros has been in financial trouble for years, and the merger has not done it any favours, it appears. David Zaslav, the boss of WBD, has been ruthless with cancellations of nearly-completed movies like 'Batgirl' and other in-development projects to take tax write-offs. There was an intense outcry over the decisions. Experts have however said that these decision reduce the trust between the studio and creatives. Earlier, Christopher Nolan, for whom Warner Bros had been a home for nearly more than 17 years, chose to quit after the studio announced in 2021 that it will release every big screen project on both HBO Max and in theatres. Apart from Nolan, many other filmmakers took exception to the decision.

Nolan had also had a rift with WB over the release of his feature 'Tenet'. The film released at a time (late 2020) when most of the cinema halls in the world were closed due to Covid-19 pandemic. While Nolan wanted the film to be released, WB wanted to wait till the theatres reopened. The film was released but was only a moderate success.

Some analysts have said that Warner Bros will merge with NBCUniversal, Comcast's mass media and entertainment subsidiary, but not until 2024 due to the complicated nature of such merger. Disney's Fox acquisition, which was completed in 2019, has proved that in the current entertainment climate, being as big as possible and owing as many IPs as possible, matters. Disney now owns whole of Marvel except Spider-Man (which Sony has the rights to), 'Star Wars', Pixar, 'The Simpsons', 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Avatar' and more.&nbsp;

Fans of DC and 'Harry Potter' are worried over the uncertain future of the properties, both of which&nbsp;have been floundering without any clear direction for quite a while. While there have been successes, but nothing like what these franchises enjoyed in 2010s.&nbsp;

Warner Bros Discovery, the new entity that emerged after Warner Bros and Discovery, Inc merged together, has landed in fresh trouble. As per The Wrap, a lawsuit has alleged that Warner Bros, the home of franchises like DC and 'Harry Potter', cooked the subscriber base of streaming service HBO Max by as much as 10 million in order to mislead shareholders and get a higher rate for the merger. The act violates the Securities Act, the lawsuit added. As per the publication, the lawsuit was filed last Friday in New York by Collinsville Police Pension Board, a shareholder of WBD. There was an intense outcry over the decisions. Experts have however said that these decision reduce the trust between the studio and creatives. Earlier, Christopher Nolan, for whom Warner Bros had been a home for nearly more than 17 years, chose to quit after the studio announced in 2021 that it will release every big screen project on both HBO Max and in theatres. Apart from Nolan, many other filmmakers took exception to the decision. Nolan had also had a rift with WB over the release of his feature 'Tenet'. The film released at a time (late 2020) when most of the cinema halls in the world were closed due to Covid-19 pandemic. While Nolan wanted the film to be released, WB wanted to wait till the theatres reopened. The film was released but was only a moderate success. Some analysts have said that Warner Bros will merge with NBCUniversal, Comcast's mass media and entertainment subsidiary, but not until 2024 due to the complicated nature of such merger. Disney's Fox acquisition, which was completed in 2019, has proved that in the current entertainment climate, being as big as possible and owing as many IPs as possible, matters. Disney now owns whole of Marvel except Spider-Man (which Sony has the rights to), 'Star Wars', Pixar, 'The Simpsons', 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Avatar' and more. Fans of DC and 'Harry Potter' are worried over the uncertain future of the properties, both of which have been floundering without any clear direction for quite a while. "Now that was the goal, so it wasn't a complete surprise. But when I read that, I just knew in my gut, 'We can`t make this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice.' It would've been fine for Shazam having two origin stories converge in one movie, but not good for Black Adam," he added. 
 
Revealing how he fixed the situation, Johnson continued, "I made a phone call. I said, 'I have to share my thoughts here. It`s very unpopular...` because everybody thought, 'Hey, this script is great, let's go make this movie.' I said, 'I really think that you should make 'Shazam!,' make that movie on its own in the tone that you want. And I think we should separate this as well.`" 
 
Fortunately Warner Bros agreed to listen to Johnson and now the actor is all set to play the lead in the upcoming standalone 'Black Adam' tentpole this fall.&nbsp;

HBO Max cancels 'Gordita Chronicles' new season

Shaun Murphy, the former head of television at Warner Bros Australia, announced the formation of Big Owl Pictures, a television and feature production firm, on Wednesday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the initiative, based in Sydney, Australia, has obtained funding from a private equity firm, Balance Vector. At the new company, Murphy will hold the positions of CEO and executive producer.

According to him, Big Owl Pictures will work to create and produce a range of unscripted material, as well as a few cinematic and written projects. In the upcoming months, the business is expected to reveal its leadership staff and first project lineup. Steve Luczo, a former CEO of the largest hard-drive manufacturer, Seagate Technology, now runs Balance Vector, a privately held company.

Further, she also mentioned that she was discriminated against and treated differently on the show in comparison to the white actors. "It was more about the protocols in place and the things I see happening to my white counterpart that are not happening to me. Seeing how I was treated differently than other people. Seeing how I'm not protected by the network and the studio. Those were the things that not necessarily hurt me but frustrated me," said Patton.&nbsp;

Now employees who need to go to other states to have abortions are covered. Chief People and Culture Officer Adria Alpert Romm said in an internal memo that the studio's biggest priority is the "wellbeing, health and safety of our employees.”

Streaming giant Netflix said it will offer a $10,000 compensation for those who need to travel to other states for things like cancer treatment, transplants, and so on apart from abortion.

Several major Hollywood studios have offered support to their employees who need abortion access after the US Supreme Court overturned 1973's Roe vs Wade landmark decision. The ruling had said that the American constitution protects the right of a pregnant woman to get an abortion. Now, in the Dobbs v. Jackson case, the decision was reversed and the ruling said the constitution does not protect women's rights to abortion and left the authority to decide either way to elected representatives. The ruling has left millions of people in the country shocked, even though it was expected. Now employees who need to go to other states to have abortions are covered. Chief People and Culture Officer Adria Alpert Romm said in an internal memo that the studio's biggest priority is the "wellbeing, health and safety of our employees.” Streaming giant Netflix said it will offer a $10,000 compensation for those who need to travel to other states for things like cancer treatment, transplants, and so on apart from abortion. A source told Variety that Disney, which has properties like Marvel and Star Wars at its disposal, remains "committed to providing comprehensive access to quality and affordable care”. Comcast, which owns NBCUniversal, Paramount, and Sony also offered similar benefits to their vulnerable employees. Celebrities also spoke about the ruling. Elizabeth Banks tweeted, "This is devastating news for families - Men and women - who believe the government should not decide when and with whom they become parents. This is not the end of this fight for human rights." Ariana DeBose simply posted, "I have nothing nice to say at this moment in time." Veteran actor Viola Davis expressed her happiness. "And so it goes….Gutted. Now more than ever we have to use our voice and power! WE the people……🙏🏿🙏🏿," she tweeted.
