US presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy has taken a strong stance against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. He argues that labelling Russian President Vladimir Putin as "bad" should not automatically imply that Ukraine is "good."

Ramaswamy condemns President Zelensky for several actions he deems concerning. Firstly, he accuses Zelensky of banning 11 opposition parties, which raises questions about the state of political freedom in Ukraine.

Secondly, he points out Zelensky's consolidation of media into a single state broadcaster, raising concerns about media independence.

US presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign claimed Thursday (Oct 5) that his car was hit by at least two angry protesters who were upset about his remarks against aid to Ukraine.

US: Police reject Vivek Ramaswamy’s claims that his car was hit by pro-Ukraine protesters

In a high-stakes GOP debate held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, on Wednesday (Sept 28, local time), former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie delivered a humorous yet pointed nickname for former President Donald Trump due to his absence from the debate stage: "Donald duck."

This clever quip was just one of many attacks unleashed by Christie, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former Vice President Mike Pence against Trump during the event. Notably, Trump is the clear front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.

This second GOP debate took on a heightened sense of urgency as Trump sought to divert attention from the other candidates by hosting a competing event in the Detroit area, where autoworkers were engaged in a strike.

Christie's direct address to Trump

Christie, in response to a question about crime, seized the moment to address Trump directly, stating, "Donald Trump should be here to answer for that, but he's not."

He confronted Trump's absence and remarked, "You're not here tonight, not because of polls or indictments, but because you're afraid to be on this stage defending your record. You're avoiding these challenges. And let me tell you what's going to happen if you continue to do so: We won't refer to you as Donald Trump anymore; we're going to call you Donald duck."

Shift in debate dynamics

In contrast to the first debate where Trump was rarely mentioned and faced minimal attacks, this debate marked a notable shift. The candidates directed their criticism towards Trump in three significant ways:

Absence critique: Christie and DeSantis called out Trump for not participating in the debate.

National debt: Both Christie and DeSantis highlighted the significant expansion of the national debt during Trump's tenure in the White House.

Executive powers: Pence offered a critique of Trump's plans to expand executive powers if he were to secure a second term.

Christie highlighted Trump's nonattendance in another response, where he compared President Biden "hiding in his basement" to Trump "hiding behind the walls of his golf clubs."

DeSantis echoed Christie's sentiments, asserting that both Biden and Trump were "missing in action." Furthermore, both Christie and DeSantis took aim at the Trump administration for its contribution to the significant national debt increase of $7.8 trillion during Trump's presidency.

‘Transgenderism a mental health disorder’, says Vivek Ramaswamy in GOP debate

Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican hopeful in the race for the White House, has promised to make significant changes to the H-1B temporary worker visa system if elected. This is a notable pledge considering that he has utilised this very system to hire highly skilled foreign workers for his pharmaceutical company, Roivant Sciences, which contributed substantially to his wealth.

Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, in a conversation with Politico, said that if he comes to power he will work towards gutting the H-1B visa system. He told the media outlet, “The lottery system needs to be replaced by actual meritocratic admission. It’s a form of indentured servitude that only accrues to the benefit of the company that sponsored an H-1B immigrant. I’ll gut it,” he said in a statement, adding that the U.S. needs to eliminate chain-based migration.

“The people who come as family members are not the meritocratic immigrants who make skills-based contributions to this country," he added. He founded his pharma Roivant Sciences in 2014.

The data quoted by Politico suggested that from 2018 to 2023, Roivant Sciences hired employees under H1-B visas. The application was approved by US Citizenship and Immigration Services. H1-B visa allows employers in the US to recruit foreign workers with specialised skills to work in the country.

Ramaswamy's press secretary Tricia McLaughlin, speaking over Ramaswamy's take on policies, said, the role of a policymaker “is to do what’s right for a country overall: the system is broken and needs to be fixed.”

“Vivek believes that regulations overseeing the US energy sector are badly broken, but he still uses water and electricity,” McLaughlin said adding, “This is the same.” Ramaswamy stepped down as CEO of Roivant in February 2021 but remained the chair of the company's board of directors until February this year when he launched his presidential campaign.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican hopeful in the race for the White House, has promised to make significant changes to the H-1B temporary worker visa system if elected.

The system is “bad for everyone involved,” Ramaswamy told Politico. Vivek Ramaswamy vows to 'gut' H1-B visas, which his firm had used, if he becomes US president

Vivek Ramaswamy, the Indian-American Republican US presidential candidate, has described the H-1B visa programme as "indentured servitude" and pledged to abolish the lottery-based system in favour of meritocratic entry if he wins the race to the White House in 2024.

Vivek Ramaswamy's H1-B hypocrisy: Himself used H1-B visa 29 times, calls it 'indentured servitude'

Fresh from the high of the first Republican primary debate last month, presidential nomination hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy was given a stark reality check during an interview with MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan. Asked to explain his own words about Donald Trump's "abhorrent" behaviour that made him a "danger to democracy", Ramaswamy tip-toed around the question, only to be called out on national TV by the host.

Hasan referred to Ramswamy's January 12, 2021 post on X (formerly known as Twitter), six days after the events of the US Capitol Hill riots where the GOP leader attacked Trump and wrote: “What Trump did last week was wrong. Downright abhorrent. Plain and simple."

Using Ramswamy's words as the departure point, Hasan asked, “Is Donald Trump, as you say now, the best president of the 21st century...Or is Trump, as you’ve said in the past, in your books, on Twitter, a ‘sore loser’, who is a ‘danger to democracy’, and who did ‘downright abhorrent’ and egregious things on January 6’? Which one is he, Vivek?”

Hasan was referring to Ramaswamy's statement from the debate last month wherein he dubbed Trump as the best president of the 21st century.

Replying to Hasan's question, a visibly agitated Ramswamy said Trump was the best president of the 21st century, and that he “would have made the same judgments that he has made every step of the way”.

Hasan interjected and said: “You say he behaved in downright abhorrent behaviour that makes him a danger to democracy. Downright.”

Vivek Ramaswamy declines to elucidate his remarks criticising Donald Trump in interview

Republican presidential nomination seeker Vivek Ramaswamy has vowed to pardon all non-violent January 6 protesters if he is elected as the next US president in 2024.

“America now has a two-tiered justice system: Antifa and BLM rioters roam free while peaceful January 6 protesters are imprisoned without bail. Biden’s ‘Department of Injustice’ has executed over 1,000 arrests for nonviolent offences related to January 6, casting a dark shadow over Lady Justice and the foundational principles of our legal system,” said Ramaswamy.

“To unify this country, I commit as president to pardon all Americans who were targets of politicised federal prosecutions and those denied due process. This includes all peaceful, nonviolent January 6 protesters who were denied their constitutional due process rights," he added.

In the aftermath of the US presidential elections, former president Donald Trump's supporters allegedly attempted to overturn the results. The Republican leader was accused of posting messages online to incite violence as over 2,000 people entered the US Capitol, starting a riot.

Will pardon Trump: Ramaswamy

Apart from forgiving the Capitol Hill protesters, Ramaswamy has also batted for pardoning Trump. During a recent interview, Ramaswamy extended his support to Trump and said his aim was to 'reunite' the country.

“If Donald Trump's the nominee -- yes, I will support him, and if I'm the president, yes, I will pardon him because that will help reunite the country. But it's not the most important thing I'm going to do as the next president. It is the table stakes for moving this country forward," Ramaswamy said.

Ramaswamy, a US citizen, born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio has put his hat in the ring to secure a nomination from the Republican party for the 2024 presidential elections. He is up against former president Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Mike Pence and other heavyweights.

Despite starting as an underdog, Ramaswamy has made rapid strides in the race, especially after the first Republican debate held last month. The entrepreneur was subjected to a barrage of verbal tirades from other Republican leaders but managed to hold his own and emerge as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the GOP primary debate.

Watch | Vivek Ramaswamy: I want to revive our nation's patriotism and pride Will pardon Trump: Ramaswamy Apart from forgiving the Capitol Hill protesters, Ramaswamy has also batted for pardoning Trump. Also read | Who is Vivek Ramaswamy? Ramaswamy describes differences with Trump as 'very small': Report

The war of words between GOP presidential nomination hopefuls Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley continues to heat up. In the latest exchange, 38-year-old Ramaswamy on his campaign website referred to Haley by her Indian birth name.

In an updated section of the website, aimed at dispelling the myths about him, Ramaswamy slammed Haley for her criticism of his position on the US relationship with Israel.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, dated 20 May 2018, Haley cleared the air by stating: "Nikki is my name on my birth certificate. I married a Haley. Since Donald Trump was not at the Wednesday (August 23) GOP presidential primary debate, the main target was the political newcomer and Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. He became the center of attention during the debate among eight Republican US Presidential hopefuls. The multimillionaire Ramaswamy's popularity spurred and so did his online fundraising after his standout performance at the debate. According to information from the Ramaswamy campaign, the 38-year-old candidate garnered over USD 450,000 in the hour immediately following the Wednesday debate. Ramaswamy's showing at the debate, which was attended by prominent rivals including former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, former vice president Mike Pence, and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, has drawn widespread attention and reactions. Ramaswamy's relative political inexperience did not deter him from making a mark in the debate. Vivek Ramaswamy's popularity spurs post GOP presidential primary debate, turbocharges his fundraising

The recently concluded debate of presidential hopefuls from Republican Party didn't have the participation of the GoP frontrunner — former US president Donald Trump. But it did not stop the other hopefuls from trying to project themselves as best as they could to win the Republican Party nomination for the US Presidential Elections in 2024.

The hopefuls sparred with each other over issues like immigration, economy, climate change and abortion during the debate.

Usually one would expect the debate to remain limited to issues facing the US, but the Republican hopefuls made reference to many other things and even people to score brownie points against their intra-party rivals.

It is important on such a stage to make no mistakes as all your supporters and opponents closely watch you.

When it came to Vivek Ramaswamy, the 37-year-old Indian-American who is in the Republican fray, allegations of him ripping a line from former US president Barack Obama's speech were made.

Did Vivek Ramaswamy steal Barack Obama's lines? Or didn't he? Let's take a look.

The allegation

After the Republican debate, many news outlets in US media have accused Ramaswamy of lifting Obama's words. Fox News has even gone to the length of saying that Ramaswamy 'stole' one of Obama's opening lines.

Chris Christie, former governor of New Jersey and one of presidential hopefuls immediately poked Ramaswamy right in the middle of the debate and said that the words were lifted from Obama's speech in the past.

"The last person who wanted these debates who stood in the middle of the stage who said 'what's a skinny guy with odd last name doing up here' was Barack Obama and I think we are dealing with same type of amateur," said Christie targetting Ramaswamy.

What did Ramaswamy say during the debate?

These were Ramaswamy's words.

"First let me just address the question that is on everybody's minds at home tonight. Who the heck is this skinny guy with funny last name and what the heck is doing in the middle of this debate stage," he said.

Which speech of Obama is being mentioned?

Ramaswamy's words are being likened to those from a speech Obama made in the year 2004, much before he was a president. Obama was speaking at Democratic National Convention. It was a keynote speech.

During his speech back then Obama had spoken about "...The hope of a skinny kid, with funny name, who believes America has a place for him too."

Did Ramaswamy steal Obama's words?

There does appear a thematic similarity in words in both speeches. Barack Obama was a near-unknown figure before his success in 2008 US presidential elections. At the time, it was almost taken for granted that Hillary Clinton would be the next US president.

Vivek Ramaswamy finds himself in a somewhat similar position right now. The Republican field is full of names who are regulars in news headlines or generally in internal political affairs of the US. Ramaswamy is a new entrant to the field of hopefuls and has a task of carving a public image of himself.

Words in both speeches are a joking reference to their relative lack of fame. A sort of self-deprecation. So thematically they do appear to serve the same purpose.

Has Ramaswamy 'stolen' or 'plagiarised' Obama's speech? A word-to-word comparison between the quotes above would suggest a 'no'. But when strategy is considered, it does seem Ramaswamy may have taken a cue from Obama's speech.

Vivek Ramaswamy says global warming is not an existential threat

The first debate to pick the next Republican contender for US presidential election took place on Wednesday (August 23) night. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina governor of Indian origin Nikki Haley, former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson, former vice president Mike Pence, Indian-origin entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and South Carolina senator Tim Scott took to the debate stage in Milwaukee, hosted by Fox News.

The biggest talking point of the night remained someone who was notably absence: frontrunner and former president Donald Trump.

During the debate, when the moderators posed the question of whether the GOP leaders would support Trump if he is the party's nominee, even if he is convicted by the courts in ongoing criminal cases, nearly all candidates replied in the affirmative.

Chris Christie, one of the most vocal critics of Trump seemingly remained the only one to not lend his support to the former president.

“Here is the bottom line. Someone’s got to stop normalising this conduct. Whether or not you believe the criminal charges are right or wrong, the conduct is beneath the office of president of the United States," said Christie, who was met with a round of boos.

It was at this instance that Ramaswamy interjected and said: “President Trump, I believe, was the best president of the 21st century."

The 38-year-old entrepreneur suggested Christie was running for a contributor spot on MSNBC rather than for president. He also urged viewers to switch channels to MSNBC if they wanted to "watch someone blindly bash Trump".

DeSantis, on the other hand, said: "This election is not about January 6 [Capitol riots for which Trump is facing the heat] . As Republicans, we need to look forwards."

Former vice president Pence took the opportunity to pat his own back for going against Trump and upholding the spirit of the American Constitution.

In recent weeks, Vivek Ramaswamy has risen as a strong Republican contender, especially among those looking for an alternative to Donald Trump, although his faith may be problematic among Republicans. Ramaswamy, a devoted Hindu, has also come under fire for his religion from the DeSantis campaign and Hank Kuneeman, a preacher who supports Trump and calls himself a "prophet" and an election skeptic.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a multimillionaire former biotech executive, called the climate change a 'hoax' as GOP candidates on Thursday (August 24) argued over global warming and other climate-related issues during the first Republican debate. Ramaswamy said, "I'm the only candidate on stage who isn't bought and paid for, so I can say this. Climate change is a hoax… The reality is more people are dying of bad climate change policies than they are of actual climate change." Climate change is evident in the form of long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels. GOP debate: Vivek Ramaswamy calls climate change a 'hoax', aid to Ukraine 'disastrous'

Who will ultimately be the Republican candidate to take on Joe Biden for the White House? The GOP has conducted its first presidential primary debate which saw eight candidates often engage in heated exchanges.

US presidential election: Vivek Ramaswamy takes center stage at debate

One of the sharpest exchanges during the first Republican debate was between former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy - both persons of Indian origin. On Wednesday night (August 23), the two sparred over Ukraine funding at the debate stage in Milwaukee as Haley slammed Ramaswamy for lacking foreign policy experience and supporting a 'dictator' like Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Nearly an hour into the debate, the Fox News moderators posed questions on the Ukraine war and asked the eight candidates if they would continue supporting/funding Kyiv in its war against Moscow.

While the majority vowed to continue support to Ukraine, Ramaswamy took a defiantly opposite position.

He suggested that supporting Ukraine when the US hadn’t fixed its own problems was “disastrous". Consequently, Haley accused him of supporting America’s foreign adversaries and abandoning its friends.

Look at what Putin did: Haley

“He wants to hand Ukraine to Russia, he wants to let China eat Taiwan, he wants to go and stop funding Israel,” said Haley, adding: You don’t do that to friends. What you do instead is you have the backs of your friends.”

Notably, in a recent interview on Russell Brand's Rumble show, Ramaswamy said he would end funding to Israel when a $38 billion package ends in 2028.

Upon being cornered, Ramaswamy responded, saying, “Our relationship with Israel would never be stronger than by the end of my first term, but it’s not a client relationship, it’s a friendship and you know what friends do? Friends help each other stand on their own two feet.”

“You know what I love about them, I love their border policies, I love their tough-on-crime policies, I love that they have a national identity and an Iron Dome to protect their homeland, so yes I want to learn from the friends that we’re supporting,” Ramaswamy said.

Despite Ramswamy's arguments, Haley continued to push back. “Look at what Putin did today. He killed [Wagner Group mercenary leader Yevgeny] Prigozhin. When I was at the UN, the Russian ambassador suddenly died. This guy is a murderer and you are choosing a murderer," Haley said.

"You have no experience in foreign policy, and it shows," she added.

You have no experience...: Haley blasts Ramaswamy for his foreign policy stance during GOP debate

Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy is in the spotlight in US media due to a new contentious issue. However, this instance diverges from his previous outspoken remarks against corporate involvement in political agenda. The whole saga started with a piece in which the 37-year-old multimillionaire was quoted by The Atlantic magazine as having shared quite controversial statements about the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Since that initial report, the situation has evolved, with CNN also engaging with the presidential hopeful, seeking an explanation.

So what did The Atlantic say?

In a July conversation with The Atlantic, Vivek Ramaswamy discussed the tragic events of 9/11. He was questioned about the issue of racism in the aftermath of the incident and how there is a prevalent misconception among certain uninformed Americans who associated individuals with brown skin as potential terrorists.

Ramaswamy expressed his thoughts on this matter which has now become a full-blown controversy.

“I think it is legitimate to say how many police, how many federal agents, were on the planes that hit the Twin Towers. Maybe the answer is zero. It probably is zero for all I know, right? I have no reason to think it was anything other than zero. But if we’re doing a comprehensive assessment of what happened on 9/11, we have a 9/11 commission, absolutely that should be an answer the public knows the answer to.

"Well, if we’re doing a January 6 commission, absolutely, those should be questions that we should get to the bottom of,” he said. “‘Here are the people who were armed. Here are the people who are unarmed.’ What percentage of the people who were armed were federal law-enforcement officers? I think it was probably high, actually.
When he was asked about why he spoke of police and federal agents under that light, Ramaswamy said, “Oh yeah, I don’t think they belong in the same conversation,” he said.

“I think it’s a ridiculous comparison. But I brought it up only because it was invoked as a basis for the January 6 commission.”

Vivek Ramaswamy doesn't want to be vice president if he fails to win a GOP nomination for 2024

The race to secure the presidential nomination from the Republican party is heating up. While former president Donald Trump still leads the GOP charts, it is India-origin American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy who has made rapid strides to tie himself to second-placed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

According to a poll conducted by Emerson College, Ramaswamy and DeSantis were tied at 10 per cent each, trailing Trump, who holds a substantial lead with 56 per cent.

DeSantis suffered a plunge of 21 per cent in the polls since June while Ramaswamy, who was stuck on two per cent, had made a steady climb.

Talking about the poll results, Emerson College Polling Executive Director Spencer Kimball said Ramaswamy made improvements in voters with postgraduate degrees, taking 17 per cent of that group, and with younger voters, winning 16 per cent of those younger than 35.

Comparatively, DeSantis fell sharply in favour among the postgraduate voters from 38 per cent in June to 14 per cent now.

The poll may have come as a warning message for DeSantis who was urged by the super Political Action Committee (PAC) in a leaked memo to "take a sledgehammer" to Ramaswamy.

Meanwhile, Ramaswamy replied to the memo saying: “Another boring, establishment attack from Super PAC-creation ‘Robot Ron’ who is literally taking lame, pre-programmed attack lines against me for next week’s debate."
