Is Ramaswamy trying to be Trump’s deputy? Latest developments suggest so

<p>It is possible, given Vivek Ramaswamy's ancestral origins in southern India, to imagine that he read Iowa this week as 'Ayyo'-wa! That Tamil exclamation is one of emotional distress, and that is exactly what the biotech-entrepreneur-turned presidential aspirant of the United States must have experienced when Republicans gave him no more than 8 per cent of the votes up for grabs at the party caucus in the cold agricultural midwestern state.</p>

<p>Not surprisingly, Vivek, whose name in Sanskrit means one endowed with discernment and wisdom, gave up his bid and simply said "Aye, Aye, sir" to Donald Trump. Standing fourth among four in a Republican runoff is not exactly flattering. Ramaswamy's discretion is understandable, but the foolhardy valour that preceded his defeat might cost him dearly.</p>

<p>Trump even used the word 'deceitful' to describe Ramaswamy's campaign while he was even targeted within the right-wing camp for being vegetarian. For all practical purposes, his attempts to please Trump early on didn't work. As I see it, Vivek R tried sophisticated sycophancy, mixing his challenge to rivals with a Plan B to endear himself to Trump by promising a pardon to aid Trump who is facing various business and political malpractice charges linked to his controversial presidency and his role as a real estate tycoon.</p>

<p>From all indications, including signals from the Trump camp, Vivek has lost his chance to be the running mate for the former president on a comeback trail who led the Iowa primaries with 51 per cent votes. If the brown-skin factor is a factor, Vivek has to reckon with Nikki Haley, also of Indian origin and a woman to boot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other side of the Atlantic pond, Ramaswamy's chances should have seemed slim even before, but the talk-is-cheap logic usually sinks in late in a media culture in which the person who is seen as the loudest or most logical or most articulate gets a leg-up through soundbites and policy wishlists. <p>Ramaswamy, like his trans-Atlantic ideological Siamese twin, Sunak, tried to be more right-wing than the traditional white conservative Rep by targeting immigration policies — wanting to end American citizenship granted by birth to children of illegal immigrants and also supporting the militarisation of the porous southern border of the US.</p>

<p>Such stuff on immigration and loud no-nonsense market stuff on economics do warm the hearts of the American Right. But there's more to the American presidency than such talk. You need an earthy connection with the Average Joe/Jill in the hinterland of the sprawling federation that VR seemed to lack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At 38, the Harvard-educated Ramaswamy is still young and can still bounce back in America's frenetic political sweepstakes. His self-funded campaign and his confidence seem like big assets, but his controversial statements include a promise to abolish the Department of Education! In other words, he stands for the diametric opposite of the welfare state and does not believe in making even minor concessions that right-wing populists are known for.</p>

<p>His talk about using presidential fiat to implement administrative goals and his call for Israel to destroy Hamas reek of what in India we would call the zeal of the neo-convert trying too hard to please. To borrow from a memorable Bollywood song that spoofs an Indian trying to be like an Englishman, Vivek Ramaswamy has been behaving like a crow donning peacock feathers — doomed to crash when the feathers fall off.<br />
It seems that indeed happened in Iowa.</p>

<p>With age and personal wealth on his side, Vivek may yet bounce back. If Trump can do it, why can't he? But then, tomorrow is another day.</p>

<p>A 30-year-old man was arrested in New Hampshire for sending threatening messages to Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy ahead of a scheduled campaign event.</p>

<p>The perpetrator, who was arrested on Saturday (Dec 9), was identified as Tyler Anderson. He was charged with sending a threat using interstate commerce.</p>

<p>He was produced before the court on Monday (Dec 11) where he remained silent other than telling the judge he understood the proceedings. A detention hearing was scheduled for Thursday.</p>

<h2><strong>Ramaswamy expresses gratitude for swift action&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>A spokesperson for Ramaswamy said that the texts were directed at his campaign, in which Tyler had threatened to assassinate the Republican leader ahead of his event.</p>

<p>“We are grateful to law enforcement for their swiftness and professionalism in handling this matter and pray for the safety of all Americans,” Stefan Mychajliw, deputy communications director, said in a statement.</p>

<p>Ramaswamy also expressed his gratitude to law enforcement agencies for their swift action.</p>

<p>“I'm grateful for the team that's around us and they've been doing a great job in making sure that I'm kept safe," he said.</p>

<p>According to court documents, the man received a text message from the candidate’s campaign on Friday notifying him of Monday’s breakfast event in Portsmouth.</p>

<p>In response, the campaign staff received two text messages, one threatening to shoot Ramaswamy in the head, and the other threatening to kill everyone at the event and desecrate their corpses.</p>

<p>The FBI said they zeroed in on the man&nbsp;by tracing his cellphone number, following which the agents landed at the man’s home on Saturday and arrested him.</p>

<h2><strong>Accused can be sent to prison for up to 5 years&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The texts were found in a deleted folder, the FBI affidavit said.</p>

<p>According to the affidavit, the man, during the interrogation, told the FBI that he had sent similar texts to “multiple other campaigns”.</p>

<p>The document also includes a screenshot of texts threatening a mass shooting in response to an invitation to see a candidate “who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.”</p>

<p>Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican hopeful in the race for the White House, has promised to make significant changes to the H-1B temporary worker visa system if elected.&nbsp;This is a notable pledge considering that he has utilised this very system to hire highly skilled foreign workers for his pharmaceutical company, Roivant Sciences, which contributed substantially to his wealth.</p>

<p>Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, in a conversation with Politico, said that if he comes to power he will work towards gutting the H-1B visa system. He told the media outlet, “The lottery system needs to be replaced by actual meritocratic admission. It’s a form of indentured servitude that only accrues to the benefit of the company that sponsored an H-1B immigrant. I’ll gut it,” he said in a statement, adding that the U.S. needs to eliminate chain-based migration.</p>

<p>The data quoted by Politico suggested that from 2018 to 2023, Roivant Sciences hired employees under H1-B visas. The application was approved by US Citizenship and Immigration Services.&nbsp;H1-B visa allows employers in the US to recruit foreign workers with specialised skills to work in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The system is “bad for everyone involved,” Ramaswamy told Politico.</p>

Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican hopeful in the race for the White House, has promised to make significant changes to the H-1B temporary worker visa system if elected. This is a notable pledge considering that he has utilised this very system to hire highly skilled foreign workers for his pharmaceutical company, Roivant Sciences, which contributed substantially to his wealth. Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, in a conversation with Politico, said that if he comes to power he will work towards gutting the H-1B visa system. He told the media outlet, “The lottery system needs to be replaced by actual meritocratic admission. It’s a form of indentured servitude that only accrues to the benefit of the company that sponsored an H-1B immigrant. I’ll gut it,” he said in a statement, adding that the U.S. needs to eliminate chain-based migration. He founded his pharma Roivant Sciences in 2014. The data quoted by Politico suggested that from 2018 to 2023, Roivant Sciences hired employees under H1-B visas. The application was approved by US Citizenship and Immigration Services. H1-B visa allows employers in the US to recruit foreign workers with specialised skills to work in the country. The system is “bad for everyone involved,” Ramaswamy told Politico. He calls for replacing lottery-based visas, such as H-1B worker visas, with a "meritocratic" admission system. Vivek Ramaswamy, the Indian-American Republican US presidential candidate, has described the H-1B visa programme as "indentured servitude" and pledged to abolish the lottery-based system in favour of meritocratic entry if he wins the race to the White House in 2024.

<p>Fresh from the high of the first Republican primary debate last month,&nbsp;presidential nomination hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy was given a stark reality check during an interview with&nbsp;MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan. Asked to explain his own words about Donald Trump's "abhorrent" behaviour that made him a "danger to democracy", Ramaswamy tip-toed around the question, only to be called out on national TV by the host.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hasan referred to Ramswamy's January 12, 2021 post on X (formerly known as Twitter), six days after the events of the US Capitol Hill riots where the GOP leader attacked Trump and&nbsp;wrote:&nbsp;“What Trump did last week was wrong. Downright abhorrent. Plain and simple."</p>

<p>Using Ramswamy's words as the departure point, Hasan asked, “Is Donald Trump, as you say now, the best president of the 21st century...Or is Trump, as you’ve said in the past, in your books, on Twitter, a ‘sore loser’, who is a ‘danger to democracy’, and who did ‘downright abhorrent’ and egregious things on January 6’? Which one is he, Vivek?”</p>

<p>Hasan was referring to Ramaswamy's statement from the debate last month wherein he&nbsp;dubbed Trump as the best president of the 21st century.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Replying to Hasan's question, a visibly agitated Ramswamy said Trump was the best president of the 21st century, and that he “would have made the same judgments that he has made every step of the way”.</p>

<p>Hasan interjected and said:&nbsp;“You say he behaved in downright abhorrent behaviour that makes him a danger to democracy. Downright.”</p>

<p>While Ramswamy pointed to a Wall Street column, suggesting&nbsp;“censorship was the real cause of what happened on January 6”, Hasan stayed on the question:&nbsp;“What did Donald Trump do that in your view was downright abhorrent? Second time I’ve asked that.”</p>

<p>“The thing that I would have done differently if I were in his shoes, I would have declared re-election on January 7," Ramaswamy replied.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hasan said: “That’s not what I asked, Vivek. What did Trump do that was egregious, quote, ‘downright abhorrent’ and a danger to democracy? Can you just explain to our viewers your words?”</p>

<p>"I think it's pathetic. I think it's sad and pathetic that we have important issues to talk about, for the future of the country. And you're talking about a $50,000 scholarship in 2010 to go to Yale Law School when I was 24," he added.&nbsp;</p>
