Vietnam's booming food scene was awarded its first-ever Michelin stars Tuesday, with four restaurants selected by the prestigious dining guide.

Three eateries in Hanoi -- Gia, Tam Vi and Hibana by Koki -- and one in Ho Chi Minh City -- Anan Saigon -- were each awarded one Michelin star.

Although no stars were handed out to traditional street food eateries serving classics such as pho -- a noodle soup -- or bun cha -- a vermicelli noodle dish with grilled pork -- Vietnamese flavours feature heavily among the winners.

Tam Vi largely focusses on northern Vietnamese dishes including ham with periwinkle snails -- served with fresh herbs, rice vermicelli noodles and fish sauce -- and crab soup with spinach, a popular summer meal.

Nguyen Bao Anh, whose mother, Tam, owns the restaurant and named it after herself, said her mum "had a dream of opening a restaurant where customers could come and feel like they were eating a home-cooked meal".

"The restaurant serves traditional food and I think now not many restaurants serve that kind of food that remind people of familiar flavours," Bao Anh told AFP after the awards ceremony in Hanoi.

"This award is for my mum and I'm proud of her," she added.

Sam Tran, the chef and co-founder of high-end contemporary restaurant Gia, spent 10 years studying in Australia before returning to Hanoi, her home city, to push the boundaries of Vietnamese cuisine. 
 
"Through each dish at Gia, I want to tell the story of Vietnamese culture," she wrote in a guide to the ceremony.

"I want to tell the story of each stage of my life, the regions I have visited, the flavours passed down from generation to generation that I have tasted."

In Ho Chi Minh City, Anan Saigon was recognised for its modern take on Vietnamese classics, including a bone marrow wagyu beef pho.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, said Vietnam's two biggest cities, Hanoi and commercial centre Ho Chi Minh City, offered a vibrant and varied dining experience.

"Hanoi has a laid back and relaxed vibe, with small shops and restaurants mostly from the Old Quarter", Poullennec said.

"Ho Chi Minh City on the other hand is a bustling and rapidly growing city, which offers a unique energy to all travellers and a very diverse food scene."

Hibana by Koki, which serves Japanese cuisines was the only non-Vietnamese restaurant to receive a star.

For the first time, restaurants in Vietnam get the Michelin star

A Chinese research ship and its escort, which operated for nearly a month in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea and prompted a rare protest from Hanoi, left those waters late on Monday.

Chinese vessel Xiang Yang Hong 10 began sailing in Vietnam's EEZ on May 7, at times flanked by a dozen ships, regularly crossing gas and oil fields operated by Russian companies, according to vessel-tracking data.

The Chinese vessel and its entourage of more than half a dozen ships began their journey back to China's Hainan island, leaving Vietnam's EEZ around midnight, the data showed.

Asked about the movements of the ships, China's foreign ministry did not comment about the return to Hainan.

"It is legitimate and legal for Chinese research vessels to carry out normal research activities in waters under its jurisdiction, and there is no such issue about entering the exclusive economic zones of other countries," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a regular press conference on Tuesday.

Vietnam's foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Under international law, ships are allowed to sail through foreign EEZs, but unauthorised surveys are not permitted and China's operations in the South China Sea have long been problematic for countries in the region, as Beijing claims most of the energy-rich sea, including foreign EEZs.

In a rare public protest on May 25, Vietnam's government urged the Chinese research ship and its escort to leave the country's EEZ after a visit to Hanoi by senior Russian official Dmitry Medvedev.

The incident comes amid what Washington has described as "growing aggressiveness" from Beijing, following close encounters between U.S. and Chinese ships and jets in the area. Senior U.S. and Chinese officials held talks in Beijing on Monday that both parties called constructive.

At 0300 GMT on Tuesday, the Chinese research ship was seen approaching Hainan, said Ray Powell, who leads Stanford University's Project Myoushu on the South China Sea.

Vietnam's fisheries surveillance ships turned back after the Chinese vessel and its escort left Vietnam's EEZ around midnight Vietnam time, Powell added.

To keep the power system of the country running amid soaring temperatures, Vietnam's capital city Hanoi has turned some street lights off partially to keep the national power system running.

The record rise in temperature has triggered a surge in the demand for air conditioning in some parts of the Southeast Asian nation.

As per local media reports, two-thirds of street lights were turned off after 11 pm, following which the parks in the city descended into total darkness.

The weather officials issued a warning that the country could be hit by a heatwave in the month of June.

Following the warning, several cities cut back on public lighting after state utility company Vietnam Electricity (EVN) said rising public demand for air conditioning could burden the national grid further.

"It's so harsh and hot outside that people have to wear protective clothing to cool down and not get burned," Reuters quoted Hanoi resident Tran Van Hung, 67, as saying on Monday (May 29).

"I am worried about a power shortage, which may badly impact us during the hot summer," Hanoi resident Do Tung Duong said while on a walk in the dim city centre.

Another resident, Vu Thi Hoa, told AFP she agreed with the measure to cut public lighting.

"We should turn off unnecessary electric equipment, especially the lights. It feels hotter if there are too many lights on," she said.

"We need power for fans and air conditioners. It will be terrible if there is a power cut."

In response to EVN's calls for power saving, Hanoi Public Lighting Company HAPULICO reduced the city's street lights.

Although some cuts are made to street lights every year, "the power saving scheme is in a wider area this year, covering 70 per cent of the city's public lighting system," HAPULICO deputy director Le Trung Kien told local media.

"We still ensure enough lighting for traffic, security and order."&nbsp;

The cuts may last until the end of August, said HAPULICO.

Vietnam's northern and central regions are experiencing a heat wave, which has caused temperatures in some locations to reach a record 44.1 degree&nbsp;Celsius.

Low pressure advancing from the west and the Foehn effect are the reasons for the extreme temperatures over the past three days. The Fohn effect is a meteorological change from wet and cold conditions on one side of a mountain to warmer and drier conditions on the other side. There have been 39 to 43-degree temperature readings in about 15 different places.

The highest temperature was 42 degrees in the northwestern Son La Province and 43 degrees in the north-central Nghe An Province.

The conviction by the court is the latest in what as per the rights group is the government's wide-ranging attempt to silence the voices that are disapproving of the ruling Vietnamese Communist Party.

In November 2021, a video of 39-year-old Bui Tuan Lam went viral when it was shared days after a powerful Vietnamese official was captured eating gold-encrusted steak at the London restaurant of the Turkish chef whose real name is Nusret Gökçe.

Lam, who described himself in a Facebook post uploaded alongside the video as "Green Onion Bae", was arrested late last year.&nbsp;

On Thursday, he was convicted of "making, storing, distributing, or disseminating information, documents, and items against the state", the Danang police department said after a one-day trial.

"They charged the defendant based on posts and video clips Lam had on his accounts on social media platforms," lawyer Le Dinh Viet told AFP.

He added that there was nothing about the Salt Bae clip.

Lam denied the charges and said he had only "expressed his personal viewpoint and exercised his right to freedom of speech".

As per Reuters reports, apart from running a beef noodle stall in the city, Lam had been a public advocate for democracy in Vietnam and had also been an active participant in many anti-China and pro-environment protests.

The Danang police department also cited Lam's indictment as saying he had posted 19 articles and 25 videos on social media to "distort and smear the state."

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, called on the Vietnamese government to stop prosecuting Lam and others for criticising the Vietnamese Communist Party.

"The list of posts and videos listed as 'evidence' of Bui Tuan Lam's 'crimes' shows the extreme lengths to which the Vietnamese go to block any sort of online criticism of the government," Phil said.

"For the Vietnamese leadership, even songs are a threat to their monopoly of power," he added.

The Indian prime minister also unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima and said that even today the world is frightened when they hear the name of 'Hiroshima'. "I got the opportunity to unveil a bust of Mahatma Gandhi during my visit to Japan for the G7 Summit," he stated.

He added that Mahatma Gandhi's bust in Hiroshima will propagate the idea of non-violence. The prime minister will also attend the working session of G7 and hold bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. 
 
This year, Japan is hosting the G7 Summit and India is attending as a guest country. G7 comprises Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

Vietnam's deputy minister of information and communications said on Tuesday (May 9) that the country plans to ask all social media users to verify their identities. The minister cited the need to tackle online scams. Vietnam plans to bring social media platforms, including Facebook, Youtube and TikTok, under the purview of this decision.

The Southeast Asian nation has one of the highest online fraud rates in Asia, with financial, identity and romantic scams particularly common, according to the Global Anti Scam Alliance.

However, restrictions on social media are also used by the communist state to curb freedom of expression. Government critics with online following are reportedly regularly targeted.

"Unidentified social network accounts will be dealt with," said Nguyen Thanh Lam, deputy minister of information and communications, without elaborating.

Lam said that a new government decree on online information will be issued later this year. The decree will make the measure compulsory. The deputy minister said that there were times in the past authorities couldn't track social media users who violated the law.

This measure, he said, will "prevent the using of those platforms to create fraud groups that are untraceable". He did not elaborate further. Lam was quoted by AFP.

No details were shared about the potential punishments for breaking this law.

The announcement from the government comes a month after authorities said they'd probe TikTok over alleged "toxic content". Vietnam has also asked foreign tech companies to store Vietnamese users' data inside the country and establish representative offices.

The requirement is part of a sweeping cyber security law introduced in 2018 that compels Facebook and Google to take down posts deemed to be a national security threat within 24 hours.

Facebook, TikTok and YouTube do not ask users in Vietnam to verify their identity.

Earlier this year, authorities ordered mobile phone users to verify their identities and subsequently blocked around 1.2 million SIM cards.

Low pressure advancing from the west and the Foehn effect are the reasons for the extreme temperatures over the past three days. The Fohn effect is a meteorological change from wet and cold conditions on one side of a mountain to warmer and drier conditions on the other side. There have been 39 to 43-degree temperature readings in about 15 different places.

The highest temperature was 42 degrees in the northwestern Son La Province and 43 degrees in the north central Nghe An Province.

Weather stations in Hanoi have reported temperatures of 35 to 37 degrees, however actual temperatures may be 2 to 3 degrees higher.

The northwest regions and the territories from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen will see temperatures between 37 and 41 degrees on Saturday before dipping slightly to 36 to 38 degrees on Sunday, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Media reports citing experts predicted that a looming cold front will cause temperatures in Hanoi and northern Vietnam to drop starting Sunday.

Temperatures in Hanoi are expected to range from 23 to 31 degrees on Sunday and 22 to 26 degrees on Monday, according to the U.S. weather forecasting service AccuWeather. According to meteorologists, temperatures in high-altitude regions like Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province close to the Chinese border will range from 18 to 29 degrees over the weekend before falling to 17 to 21 degrees on Monday.

The Economist Intelligence Unit's Business Environment Rankings has named the Southeast Asian city-state as the best business destination due to its high level of economic and political stability.&nbsp;

Canada and Denmark are in the second and third position respectively. The United States, New Zealand and other European countries make up the top 10 list. &nbsp;

Only one other Asian territory finds a place in the top 10 - Hong Kong. The Special Administrative Region of China, a traditional rival of Singapore, occupies the seventh position.&nbsp;

"Our ranking shows that North America and western Europe remain the best regions in the world to do business," Economist Intelligence Unit report quoted Prianthi Roy, country forecast manager and Europe analyst, as saying.&nbsp;

While Singapore and Hong Kong are the only Asian territories in the top 10, several Asian countries have moved up in the rankings.&nbsp;

Vietnam is the biggest gainer, climbing 12 spots in the latest rankings. Thailand has risen 10 places since 2022 while India has managed to move up six places.&nbsp;

Vietnam, in particular, has fared so well due to companies pursuing the policy of having an alternate supply chain&nbsp;in Vietnam. With favourable investment policies and competitive labour costs, Vietnam is being seen as an alternate manufacturing hub to China.&nbsp;

With a stringent zero-Covid policy that ended only last year&nbsp;and the consequent economic distress, it comes as no surprise that the biggest loser in this year's rankings is China.&nbsp;

"The outlook for China’s business environment has deteriorated as a result of greater policy uncertainty, US-China tensions and a more challenging longer-term outlook for growth," the report noted.&nbsp;

China, the report said, now ranks below Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and India for doing business.&nbsp;

A Vietnamese woman was recently discovered to have parasitic worms swimming&nbsp;under her skin and buried inside her brain. According to reports, this occurred after she ate a raw blood pudding. Before becoming unwell, the unidentified 58-year-old woman from An Binh&nbsp;consumed the regional delicacy&nbsp;"Tiet canh," which is made of cooked beef and raw animal blood.&nbsp;

After cooking the meal herself, she reportedly experienced severe headaches and repeatedly fell over in her home.

Initially, doctors thought the woman was having a stroke, but following a scan, it was found that she actually had parasitic worms. The worms had built a nest in her brain and were swarming in her limbs, reported the Mirror.&nbsp;

Dr Tran Huy Tho, the deputy director of the Dang Van Ngu Hospital, stated that the woman's health could have been much worse and that she got the worm infestation from the raw blood pudding.

After obtaining a prescription for medicine to treat the infestation, the woman was discharged&nbsp;from the hospital. In a statement to the local media about her ordeal, she admitted that she consumes blood pudding once a month. It was something she had prepared&nbsp;herself, and she had thought it would be clean and disease-free.&nbsp;

The statistics agency stated that Vietnam views the birth of its 100 millionth citizen as "a proud landmark," along with initiatives to encourage economic and investment growth, in enhancing the country's reputation within the world community.

To celebrate the birth of the 100 millionth citizen, the government has scheduled a parade and a meeting ceremony for mid-April.

The National Assembly of Vietnam has confirmed Vo Van Thuong as the new president in a reshuffle&nbsp;of the country's top leadership amid a comprehensive anti-corruption operation, as reported by Reuters.&nbsp;

After the Communist Party in power nominated Thuong, 52, as its lone candidate on Wednesday (March 2), lawmakers ratified Thuong's presidency in a special session on Thursday (March 3).

The presidency is one of the top four political positions in Vietnam, although being primarily ceremonial, as per Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

According to the state-run Viet Nam News, Thuong received the support of 487 of the 488 members of the National Assembly who were present.

Thuong's appointment comes at a time when Vietnam is experiencing political unrest, during which the all-powerful Communist Party is engaged in a campaign of de-corruption, and in which factional struggle has resulted in the dismissal of a number of ministers.

The election comes after his predecessor, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, was abruptly removed from office in January. The party accused him of ordering "violations and malfeasance" by those in his employ.

An important step forward in the nation's "blazing furnace", anti-corruption campaign was evident in Phuc's ouster as president.

President-elect Thuong promised to "resolutely" carry on the fight against corruption in his opening address to the parliament as Vietnam's new leader.

“(I will) strive to fulfil to the best of my abilities the responsibilities and missions entrusted by the party, state and the people,” the newly elected president said at a swearing-in ceremony, the Viet Nam News reported.

Thuong is the youngest member of the party's Politburo (the principal&nbsp;policymaking&nbsp;committee of a&nbsp;communist&nbsp;party), which is the highest-ranking body in the government, although he is regarded as a veteran of the party because he started his political career in communist youth organisations while he was an undergraduate.

He is commonly recognised as being close to Nguyen Phu Trong, the party's general secretary and the most important man in Vietnam who is responsible for the party's fight against corruption, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

From soldiers to engineering experts, hundreds of rescue workers were deployed to the site in Dong Thap province in the Mekong Delta.&nbsp;But all the efforts went in vain as after four days, the authorities declared him dead. They also said that retrieving his body would be a "very difficult task".&nbsp;

The VNExpress news site reported that early on Friday the boy's body&nbsp; was brought to the ground after rescuers went to a depth of 25 metres. The experts used specialised equipment to bring him up.&nbsp;

Vice chairman of the provincial committee Doan Tan Buu said Friday: "The rescue lasted a very long time. As there was soil surrounding the pillar... the boy's body was intact."&nbsp;

Shortly after Ly fell into the pile on a Saturday morning, he started crying for help. But as rescuers lowered their cameras into the 35-metre-long support pillar to locate his position on Monday, they did not receive any response from him.

The incident occurred in the Mekong delta province at a bridge construction site, AFP news agency reported. The reports say that before the boy fell into the pit, he searched for scrap iron to play with his friends.

"I cannot understand how he fell into the hollow concrete pile. It has a diameter of 25 cm. And it was only driven 35 metres into the ground," Le Hoang Bao, director of Dong Thap province's Department of Transport, told a local newspaper.

The rescuers also tried to lift the pile with cranes and excavators. However, despite continuous efforts, they have failed to determine Ly's position.

They softened the soil around the pile and pumped oxygen into it, due to which the shaft titled, making the extraction process more complicated.
