<p>Allen, 87, was investigated for an alleged assault on his adopted daughter and cleared by police in the 1990s, but that has not been enough for many in the MeToo era, and he has been effectively blackballed by Hollywood.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Polanski, 90, remains a fugitive from the US over a conviction for raping a minor in the 1970s. The victim has long since forgiven him, but he faces other assault allegations. The festival says he is not attending.&nbsp;</p>

<p>French director Luc Besson <em>(The Fifth Element)</em>, who was recently cleared of rape allegations, is in the main competition with <em>Dogman.</em></p>

<p>Festival director Alberto Barbera defended their inclusion, telling Variety that Besson and Allen had been cleared by investigators: "With them, I don't see where the issue is."</p>

<p>He acknowledged it was more complex with Polanski, but said: "I am on the side of those who say you have to distinguish between the responsibilities of the individual and that of the artist."</p>

<p>He says Polanski's <em>The Palace</em> is full of "grotesque and surreal characters and aims to satirise humanity", and compared Allen's <em>Coup de Chance</em>, his 50th film and first in French, to his earlier <em>Match Point.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>Venice Film Festival Artistic Director Alberto Barbera has opened up about the impact of the SAG-AFTRA strike on the festival in a recent interview with Variety. <p>Barbera revealed that the possibility of the SAG-AFTRA strike impacting the festival was not initially foreseen. He said, "Not before it was officially called. The day after it was called, conversations started about the negative repercussions it could have on festivals. At first, it seemed it was going to be devastating. Everybody was panicking. Even more than us, it was all the producers, the studios, the streamers. For the first few days, there was total silence, we were unable to speak to anyone. We understood that the situation was very complex and threatening. There was a real risk that all the American movies could be pulled. I had closed the lineup, so you can imagine with what spirit I faced the following week. I was ready to throw everything up in the air and rethink everything."</p>

<h2><strong>On refusing the entry of Luca Guadagnino's <em>Challengers</em></strong></h2>

<p>"I should not speak for Amazon, MGM, and Warner Bros., but I will tell you briefly how things went. They were the ones who panicked the most. They suffered the most from the strike, and they are the ones with whom I had the most back and forth. The one who was in touch with them daily was Luca, who was furious and did everything to try to convince them not to make the wrong choice. He fought like a lion, up to the bitter end. Last Thursday, I got a call from Sue Kroll [Amazon Studios head of marketing] telling me, “Unfortunately, I have to tell you that the upshot of this infinite discussion is that we have decided to postpone the film’s release to spring 2024.”</p>

<h2><strong>Presence of Roman Polanski and Woody Allen at festival</strong></h2>

<p>"Luc Besson has been recently fully cleared of any accusations. Woody Allen went under legal scrutiny twice at the end of the ’90s and was absolved. With them, I don’t see where the issue is. In Polanski’s case, it’s paradoxical. It’s been 60 years. Polanski has admitted his responsibility. He’s asked to be forgiven. He’s been forgiven by the victim. The victim has asked for the issue to be put to rest. I think that to keep beating on Polanski means seeking a scapegoat for other situations that would deserve more attention. That aside, there is a cultural debate underway about Polanski with less rigid positions being taken. I am on the side of those who say you have to distinguish between the responsibilities of the individual and that of the artist. Also, I am a festival director, not a judge. I judge the artistic qualities of films. And from this perspective, I don’t see why I should not invite Polanski’s film to Venice."</p>

He also discussed the exclusion of filmmaker Luca Guadagnino's Challengers, and the presence of controversial directors Roman Polanski and Woody Allen at this year's edition of the festival. Both Polanski and Allen stand accused of sexual crimes against children. Polanski even pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, but has evaded justice and is a fugitive in the United States. Allen, who is accused of sexually abusing his adopted daughter, has never been prosecuted. He said, "Not before it was officially called. The day after it was called, conversations started about the negative repercussions it could have on festivals. At first, it seemed it was going to be devastating. Everybody was panicking. Even more than us, it was all the producers, the studios, the streamers. For the first few days, there was total silence, we were unable to speak to anyone. We understood that the situation was very complex and threatening. There was a real risk that all the American movies could be pulled. I had closed the lineup, so you can imagine with what spirit I faced the following week. I was ready to throw everything up in the air and rethink everything." On refusing the entry of Luca Guadagnino's Challengers "I should not speak for Amazon, MGM, and Warner Bros., but I will tell you briefly how things went. They were the ones who panicked the most. They suffered the most from the strike, and they are the ones with whom I had the most back and forth. The one who was in touch with them daily was Luca, who was furious and did everything to try to convince them not to make the wrong choice. He fought like a lion, up to the bitter end. Last Thursday, I got a call from Sue Kroll [Amazon Studios head of marketing] telling me, “Unfortunately, I have to tell you that the upshot of this infinite discussion is that we have decided to postpone the film’s release to spring 2024.” Presence of Roman Polanski and Woody Allen at festival "Luc Besson has been recently fully cleared of any accusations. Woody Allen went under legal scrutiny twice at the end of the ’90s and was absolved. With them, I don’t see where the issue is. In Polanski’s case, it’s paradoxical. It’s been 60 years. Polanski has admitted his responsibility. He’s asked to be forgiven. He’s been forgiven by the victim. The victim has asked for the issue to be put to rest. I think that to keep beating on Polanski means seeking a scapegoat for other situations that would deserve more attention. That aside, there is a cultural debate underway about Polanski with less rigid positions being taken. I am on the side of those who say you have to distinguish between the responsibilities of the individual and that of the artist. Also, I am a festival director, not a judge. I judge the artistic qualities of films. And from this perspective, I don’t see why I should not invite Polanski’s film to Venice." Venice Film Festival chief on Roman Polanski & Woody Allen's presence: I don’t see the issue

<p>Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein drama <em>Maestro</em>, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla Presley movie, Michael Mann’s <em>Ferrari</em>, David Fincher’s <em>The Killer</em>&nbsp;and Ava DuVernay’s <em>Origin</em>&nbsp;will make their world debuts at the Venice International Film Festival this fall.</p>

<p>Organisers announced the lineup Tuesday for the 80th edition of the festival, which — despite the flashy names behind the films — could have a little less Hollywood glamour than usual gracing its picturesque docks and red carpet come September if the Hollywood actors and writers strike stretch on. As part of the strike, actors cannot promote projects from the studios and streamers with whom the union is negotiating.</p>

<p>The prestigious film festival already lost one high-profile premiere to the labour disputes in the US in Luca Guadagnino’s tennis drama <em>Challengers</em>,&nbsp;starring Zendaya, which had been set to play in the opening night slot but has now been pushed to 2024. But Alberto Barbera, the director of the Venice Film Festival, said Tuesday that the strikes’ effects on the festival lineup had otherwise been minimal.</p>

<p><em>Priscilla</em>, an A24 film based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir <em>Elvis and Me</em>, stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi and was widely expected to be in the festival. Coppola also launched <em>Somewhere</em>&nbsp;in Venice in 2010. <em>Priscilla</em>&nbsp;will be competing for the Golden Lion alongside <em>Ferrari</em>, the buzzy racing drama starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, and Penélope Cruz as his wife Laura, based on Brock Yates’ biography.</p>

<p>DuVernay’s film, <em>Origin</em>,&nbsp;meanwhile, is based on the book <em>Caste</em>&nbsp;and the life of its author, Pulitzer winner Isabel Wilkerson. The movie stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.</p>

<p>Netflix will once again have a big presence at the festival with <em>Maestro</em>, directed by and starring Cooper as the legendary composer, opposite Carey Mulligan as Felicia Montealegre, and Fincher’s <em>The Killer</em>, with Michael Fassbender playing an assassin. The streamer is also bringing Pablo Larraín’s <em>El Conde</em>, a dark comedy in which Augusto Pinochet is a vampire, as part of the competition titles.</p>

<p>Another buzzy competition title is Michel Franco’s <em>Memory</em>, with Jessica Chastain and Peter Skarsgaard.</p>

<p>Like the Cannes Film Festival, celebrity is a huge part of the Venice iconography: Think of Lady Gaga perched on the side of a water taxi in her black Jonathan Simkhai bustier dress, or Timothée Chalamet vamping in that backless red halter top by Haider Ackermann. Last year there were also viral moments aplenty thanks to the cast of <em>Don’t Worry Darling</em>&nbsp;and the alleged “spit-gate,” in which internet spectators wondered if Harry Styles had spit on his co-star Chris Pine at the film’s premiere.</p>

<p>It remains unclear whether any Hollywood talent will be able to make the journey this year. Barbera said at this point that some actors and actresses will not be able to attend but, without getting specific, said that talent from independent fare will be able to grace the red carpets and press conferences.</p>

Venice Film Festival unveils A-list lineup with Priscilla, Ferrari, Maestro amid strikes

<p>Actor Chris Pine's decided to let go of his long hair after being compared to Rachel Green from the hit TV sitcom <em>Friends. </em>The actor last year debuted a new look at the Venice Film Festival during the premiere of <em>Don't Worry Darling.&nbsp;</em><br />

When he landed at the Venice Film festival, Pine felt he had pulled out all the stops for his debut at the star-studded premiere of Don't Worry Darling back in September 2022. But his publicist felt otherwise. While speaking to Esquire magazine, Pine revealed that his publicist felt the actor looked like Jennifer Aniston's character Rachel in Friends.&nbsp;<br />

"Why did Chris Pine cut his hair? Esquire magazine asked Pine in an Instagram clip. "I thought I was looking pretty fly," Pine admitted while showing off a fresh cut. "The hair was long, everything was happening, and my publicist said that I look like Rachel from <em>Friends.</em><br />
"I couldn't unhear it," he said. "It was the first day of my first time in Venice" Pine said. The actor revealed that he had hosts of interviews lined up for a week while the team was at the Venice Film Festival.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'All the Beauty and the Bloodshed', a documentary about U.S. photographer Nan Goldin and her fight against the wealthy Sackler family, won the top Golden Lion award at the&nbsp;Venice&nbsp;Film Festival on Saturday.</p>

<p>Made by investigative journalist Laura Poitras, the film interweaves the remarkable story of Goldin's life with her campaign to hold the Sacklers and their pharmaceutical firm accountable for the U.S. opioid crisis.</p>

<p>It is only the second time in the 79-year history of the film festival, often seen as a launch pad for Oscar hopefuls, that the main prize has gone to a documentary.</p>

<p>The runner-up Grand Jury prize went to an intense French courtroom drama "Saint Omer", by director Alice Diop making her debut in fiction after a string of documentaries.</p>

<p>"All the Beauty and the Bloodshed" beat out a string of more high-profile rivals, including a quartet of movies by U.S. streaming giant Netflix and well-considered European dramas.</p>

<p>The documentary draws on many of Goldin's images from her acclaimed slide show, "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency", which documented New York subcultures from 1979-1986.</p>

<p>But Goldin says her career almost came to an end in 2014 when she got addicted to the OxyContin painkiller, made by the Sackler's Purdue Pharma, which was given after an operation.</p>

<p>Purdue Pharma allegedly downplayed the addiction risks of OxyContin, helping to fuel a healthcare crisis that has claimed more than 500,000 opioid overdose deaths over two decades. It filed for bankruptcy in 2019.</p>

<p>The Sacklers have denied wrongdoing but said in March that they "sincerely regret" that OxyContin "unexpectedly became part of an opioid crisis".</p>

<p>Goldin has fought a years-long battle to get museums to stop taking money from the family, saying they should not be allowed to buy respectability through "toxic philanthropy".</p>

<p>"I have known a lot of brave and courageous people in my life, but I have never met anyone like Nan, somebody who could decide to take on the billionaire Sackler family," director Poitras said as she collected the Golden Lion.</p>

<p>"She goes to the depths of her soul and shares things with us that most people don't share with the people they are closest to, let alone to a public like this."</p>

<p>JAILED IRANIAN HONOURED</p>

<p>Saturday's ceremony wrapped up the 11-day movie marathon, which drew an array of stars to the&nbsp;Venice&nbsp;red carpet - including Timothee Chalamet, Ana de Armas, Sadie Sink, Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Penelope Cruz and Christoph Waltz.</p>

<p>Among other prizes handed out were a special Jury's Award for "No Bears", by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who is serving a six-year prison term back home.</p>

<p>Best director went to Italy's Luca Guadagnino for his cannibal love story "Bones and All", and its young star Taylor Russell got the award for the best emerging actor or actress.</p>

<p>Best screenplay went to Martin McDonagh, for "The Banshee Of Inisherin", which he also directed. He won the same recognition in&nbsp;Venice&nbsp;for his 2017 feature "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".</p>

<p>Transgender issues have taken centre stage at the Venice Film Festival this year, with Italian director Emanuele Crialese even using the platform to reveal he was born a woman as he presented his new film starring Penelope Cruz.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The revelation by Crialese came at a press conference for his new film 'L'Immensita', which is inspired by his difficult adolescence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am never going to be like any other man... I was born biologically a woman," Crialese said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that, despite his transition, there was still a "huge part of my character that is female".&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the film, Cruz's character attempts to protect her teenage daughter, who identifies as a boy, in a bourgeois household dominated by an abusive, unfaithful husband.</p>

<p>It is not alone at this year's festival in embracing artists who reject traditional gender roles or tackle issues around sexual identity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another film in the main competition 'Monica' by Italian director Andrea Pallaoro, stars a transgender actress in the leading role -- a first in 79 editions of the festival.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trace Lysette, known for her role in Amazon Prime series 'Transparent', plays a transgender woman who returns to Ohio after a long absence to care for her dying mother.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's very rare that you see a script where there's a trans character at the centre and the movie is told through her lens," Lysette told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Usually trans characters are more a sidebar vehicle for someone else's story."</p>

<p>Besides exploring the title character's emotional and psychological world, the movie reflects on "the precarious nature of each of our identities when faced with the need to survive and transform", said Pallaoro.</p>

<p>The ongoing conflict in Ukraine's east is the subject of two films at the Venice Film Festival this year, underscoring the horror and futility of the simmering -- and largely forgotten -- war.</p>

<p>The festival also premieres Oleh Sentsov's "Rhino" about corruption in 1990s Ukraine, two years after the Ukrainian director was released from a Russian prison after being arrested for protesting the annexation of Crimea in 2014. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"Reflection", from Ukranian director Valentyn Vasyanovych, portrays the gruesome torture inflicted in secret detention centres by pro-Russian separatists in occupied Ukraine.</p>

<p>A documentary by France's Loup Bureau, "Trenches", follows Ukranian soldiers inside their tunnelled defences as they deal with anxiety, monotony, and unpredictable artillery attacks.</p>

<p>Since 2014, Ukraine's army has been locked in a protracted battle in the east with pro-Russian breakaway fighters, a conflict that has killed more than 13,000 people.</p>

<p>"I was deeply affected by the fact that in modern Europe nowadays these cruel, totally inhumane things can happen," Vasyanovych told AFP Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The torture -- which the United Nations said in July was occurring daily -- is "not less important than the war itself that's going on".</p>

<p>Using bleak, single-frame tableaus reminiscent of chiaroscuro paintings, Vasyanovych lays bare the torture inflicted on captured Ukrainian soldiers, and one former prisoner's journey towards healing and salvation.</p>

<p>After surgeon Serhiy (Roman Lutskyi) enlists in the war, he is soon taken prisoner. After first subjecting him to torture, his captors rely on him to tell them whether other mutilated and barely recognisable victims of their torture are dead, or still alive.</p>

<p>In one powerful scene, Ukranian soldiers who have been tortured to death are burned in a mobile incinerator inside a truck labelled "Humanitarian Aid from the Russian Federation."</p>

<p>In Bureau's documentary shot mostly in black and white, front-line soldiers spend much of their time digging with pickaxes, carrying sandbags, waiting and worrying -- all between moments of fire from enemy trenches within eyesight.</p>

<p>The trenches' lone female soldier -- nicknamed Persephone, for the queen of the underworld -- says her fellow soldiers, the same age as her children, "look like grown-ups, but some of them are just kids.</p>

<p>"They simply don't understand that it's no picnic," she says. "They're on a frontline, there are bombardments, people die and others are seriously injured."</p>

<p>Man's brutality is also a theme of the powerful period drama "Captain Volkonogov Escaped", by Russian directors Natasha Merkulova and Aleksey Chupov.</p>

<p>Like "Reflection", it is competing for the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion.</p>

<p>A captain, played by Yuriy Borisov, escapes from the state security services in 1938 Leningrad where he and his colleagues have been charged with killing "terrorists, spies and saboteurs".</p>

<p>"You know the times we're living in," the captain's superior tells him, to justify the gruesome torture used to exact confessions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Yes, they're innocent now -- but they'll be guilty later on."</p>
