While the pilot who died in the crash has not been identified, a unit of Ukraine had earlier said that&nbsp;one of its pilots, Oleksiy Mes, had died in a crash on Monday (Aug 26) while repelling a Russian air attack.

"On 26 August, while repelling a Russian massive combined missile and air strike, Oleksiy destroyed three cruise missiles and one attack drone," said Ukraine's Western air command unit.

Vadym Filashkin, governor of the Donetsk region, said in a post on Telegram on Sunday morning that "the Russians hit Kramatorsk", and that two journalists were injured, while one was missing after a strike on a hotel.

"Authorities, police, and rescuers are working on the spot. Debris clearance and rescue operations are ongoing," he said.

The Russian Defence Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ukraine's General Prosecutor's Office said in a statement on Telegram that it had opened a "pre-trial investigation" into the strike, which it said happened at 10:35 p.m. local time (1935 GMT) on Saturday.

Kyiv officials, including Zelensky, have said that this offensive was aimed at creating a "buffer zone" on Russian territory to shield its own population from strikes.&nbsp;

"The deal that secured their freedom was a feat of diplomacy. All told, we’ve negotiated the release of 16 people from Russia—including five Germans and seven Russian citizens who were political prisoners in their own country," the statement said.

<h2>What did the US announce?</h2>

For the first time since the Cold War, the US announced its plans to station long-range missiles in Germany on Wednesday (Jul 10). The plan includes the deployment of&nbsp;non-nuclear Tomahawk cruise, SM-6 and hypersonic missiles in Germany, starting in 2026.&nbsp;

The United States on Wednesday (May 1) accused Russia of having used "the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces" in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The statement from the US State Department further alleged that Moscow has also been using "riot control agents (tear gas) as a method of warfare in Ukraine, also in violation of the CWC."

The statement also details US sanctions against more than 280 individuals and entities "to impose additional costs on Russia for both its foreign aggression and internal repression."

Furthermore, it adds that among these are more than 80 entities and individuals, "including those engaged in the development of Russia’s future energy, metals, and mining production and export capacity; sanctions evasion and circumvention; and furthering Russia's ability to wage its war against Ukraine."

<h2>'Not an isolated incident'</h2>

The statement asserts that the use of such chemical weapons is far from an "isolated incident" and "is probably driven by Russian forces' desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield."

Slamming Moscow, the statement further states, "Russia's ongoing disregard for its obligations to the CWC comes from the same playbook as its operations to poison Aleksey Navalny and Sergei and Yulia Skripal with Novichok nerve agents."

Determining the illegal use of chemical weapons and riot weapons, America said it was imposing sanctions on three Russian state entities linked to Moscow's development of chemical and biological weapons. One of the entities is a specialised military unit that reportedly facilitated the use of chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops.

Furthermore, four Russian companies that support the three entities were also sanctioned.

Separately, the US Treasury has imposed sanctions on three entities and two individuals who were involved in buying items for Russian military institutes linked to the country's chemical and biological weapons programmes.

These sanctions freeze any US-based assets belonging to the sanctioned entities and generally prohibit Americans from doing business with them.

<h2>What is Chloropicrin?</h2>

Chloropicrin is classified as a banned choking agent by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The Hague-based organisation as per Reuters, was established to enforce and oversee compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) of 1993.

One of the earliest instances of the use of this banned chemical weapon was during World War I when German forces fired it against Allied troops.

While many nations have official award systems for ethical hacking, this is believed to be the first time a country has awarded hackers for such actions.

One of the hackers, US man Kristopher Kortright, aka "Voltage," told BBC he was delighted at being officially recognised.

'Voltage' said he has devoted himself to hacking for Ukraine, even at the cost of losing his job and spending all his life's savings.

"I've lost my job doing this and spent all my life savings in pursuit of a victory for Ukraine," he said, adding, "This award is a real morale-booster."

There are concerns about the practice of states encouraging civilian hackers, especially for malicious and possibly criminal hacks.

As per Dr Lukasz Olejnik, author of Philosophy of Cyber-security, such awards can be "dangerous".

Emily Taylor, the chief executive of Oxford Information Labs and editor of Chatham House Cyber Policy journal believes that the hacking awards are a landmark moment that might shift thinking about how cyber volunteers are used in conflicts.

"Governments usually discourage non-state actors from taking direct action in the cyber domain, for fear of escalation or unintended consequences, but wartime is often a period of extraordinary technological innovation, and the Ukraine invasion is no exception."

"Sometimes these events force a reconsideration of issues that have previously been taboo," she remarked.

Previously, in October, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned against the use and encouragement of civilian hackers. Emphasising the need to uphold the rules of war, it even published guidelines to reinforce them.

"Today, I approved the candidacy of our country's ambassador to the United Kingdom, General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi," Zelensky said in his nightly video address. "General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi spoke to me specifically about pursuing that direction -- a diplomatic direction."

Zelensky said Ukraine's Foreign Ministry had sent the request for approval and that "our alliance with Britain is set to strengthen further".

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told national television that the president "had long sought" a suitable candidate "and one of the key requirements was an understanding of the military context.

"Britain is one of the leaders in military help for Ukraine. It is a country which has a vision of military strategy. The new ambassador therefore had to have a deep military background," Kuleba said.

Ukraine has not had an ambassador in Britain since Zelensky dismissed former envoy Vadym Prystaiko in July 2023 after he publicly criticised the president.
