Ukraine said on Tuesday its biggest cross-border assault of the war to date would prevent Russia sending more troops to fight in its eastern Donetsk region and disrupt military logistics, and that Kyiv had no interest in occupying Russian territory.

Ukraine blindsided Moscow by pouring thousands of troops into the western Russian region of Kursk last week in a surprise operation that Kyiv says has seen its forces take 1,000 sq km of land, its largest gain&nbsp;since 2022.

"Unlike Russia, Ukraine does not need other people's property. Ukraine is not interested in taking the territory of the Kursk region, but we want to protect the lives of our people," Ukraine's foreign ministry's spokesperson said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Ukrainian forces have taken control of areas in the Kursk region that Russia has used to launch more than two thousand cross-border strikes on Ukraine since June.

"It should be emphasised that the operation ... helps the front line because it does not allow Russia to transfer additional units to (Ukraine's) Donetsk region, complicates its military logistics," foreign ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi said.

Russian forces have been trying to advance for months on multiple fronts in the Donetsk region, taking advantage of their greater troop numbers to steadily inch forward towards cities like the Kyiv-held logistics hub of Pokrovsk.

Reuters could not independently verify the situation on the battlefield.

For now, there is no sign of a letup for Ukraine in the east, where Kyiv's military said earlier it had recorded the largest number of battles with Russian forces on the Pokrovsk front in a single day since before the Kursk incursion.

Ukrainian military spokesman Dmytro Lykhoviy told Reuters they had noted a movement of Russian troops from Ukraine's south to other areas, likely including Kursk, this week.

But he said the number of attacks had not reduced as a result and that it was too early to draw conclusions.

<h2>Restricting movement</h2>

Kyiv's military on Tuesday restricted the movement of civilians within a 20 km (12 mile) zone of the northeastern border area.

It cited an "increase in the intensity of hostilities" and the activation of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups, adding the measure was temporary and that residents could still access their homes by showing proof of registration.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to hit back at Ukraine with a "worthy response" and accused Kyiv's "Western masters" of giving Ukrainian forces help.

Russia's acting regional governor in Kursk said on Monday that Ukraine's forces had taken control of 28 settlements in an incursion that was about 12 km deep and 40 km wide.

Though less than half Ukraine's estimate of its gains, the Russian assessment was a striking public admission of a major setback more than 29 months since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbour.

Vladimir Putin accuses Ukraine of ‘large-scale provocation’ in Russia's Kursk region

Ukraine on Sunday (August 4) announced the mandatory evacuation of children and their guardians from its Donetsk region. An announcement of the evacuation order said that "the enemy" was bombing every day.

Russia, in recent days, has been claiming advances in the region, reports AFP news agency.

"The enemy is bombing the towns and villages of these communities every day, so it was decided to evacuate children with their parents or other legal representatives," said Donetsk governor Vadym Filashkin, listing towns and villages located in directions where warring Moscow claims it had gained ground.&nbsp;

The Donetsk governor revealed that 744 children and their families had to be relocated to four regions of Ukraine. He said that he has instructed "that only armoured vehicles be involved in the process of evacuating children, as the enemy is actively using first person view drones in these communities."

"We must make every effort to protect our children," he Filashkin.

Filashkin has been advising civilians in the area to evacuate due to increased deadly Russian airstrikes in recent weeks, reports AFP.

Around a dozen Wall Street Journal employees gathered on the tarmac in solidarity with their returning colleague.

Celebrating the release, President Biden said&nbsp;“It feels wonderful. It’s been a long time coming. I was absolutely confident we could get it done. I meant it when I said — alliances make a difference. They stepped up and took a chance for us, and it mattered a lot."

Russia has threatened to take military&nbsp;measures to counter NATO after it was announced that the United States will be deploying long-range fire missiles in Germany for the first time since the 1980s.&nbsp;

Moscow accused Washington of escalating the already volatile equations while issuing a stark warning to Berlin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Beyond any doubt, our military has already taken note of this statement,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters in St. Petersburg.&nbsp;

“I think that it is just a component of the escalation policy, one of the elements of intimidation, which today is almost the main part of the Russia policy pursued by NATO and the US," he added.&nbsp;

The Kremlin added on Thursday (Jul 11) that it had "taken note" of decisions made by the Western leaders at this week's NATO Summit in Washington, including plans to "create&nbsp;separate logistics hubs in Black Sea cities” and establish “additional facilities in Europe".&nbsp;

“This poses a very serious threat to our national security. All of this will necessitate thoughtful, coordinated and effective responses from us to counter-deter NATO,” presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a conference call with reporters.

<h2>US downplays Russia's threats</h2>

Quizzed about the statement by Moscow, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan appeared to play&nbsp;down the threat.

“What we are deploying to Germany is a defence capability like many other defensive capabilities we’ve deployed across the alliance across the decades,” Sullivan said.

“So more Russian sabre-rattling obviously is not going to deter us from doing what we think is necessary to keep the alliance as strong as possible.”

<h2>What did the US announce?</h2>

For the first time since the Cold War, the US announced its plans to station long-range missiles in Germany on Wednesday (Jul 10). The plan includes the deployment of&nbsp;non-nuclear Tomahawk cruise, SM-6 and hypersonic missiles in Germany, starting in 2026.&nbsp;

The decision was welcomed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz who said it&nbsp;“fitted exactly” into his government’s security strategy. He added that the decision had been long in the making and would come as “no surprise” to anyone who was knowledgeable about security and peace policies.

Notably, it was in 2019 that the US withdrew from the Intermediate-Range&nbsp;Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty signed by&nbsp;Soviet Union's Mikhail Gorbachev and former US President Ronald Reagan in 1987. The treaty banned placing nuclear and conventional missiles with ranges from 500 to 5,500 kilometres&nbsp;and removed more than 2,600 weapons from the continent.

Russia has threatened to take military measures to counter NATO after it was announced that the United States will be deploying long-range fire missiles in Germany for the first time since the 1980s.

Russia has threatened to take military measures to counter NATO after it was announced that the United States will be deploying long-range fire missiles in Germany for the first time since the 1980s. Moscow accused Washington of escalating the already volatile equations while issuing a stark warning to Berlin. “Beyond any doubt, our military has already taken note of this statement,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters in St. Petersburg. “I think that it is just a component of the escalation policy, one of the elements of intimidation, which today is almost the main part of the Russia policy pursued by NATO and the US," he added. The Kremlin added on Thursday (Jul 11) that it had "taken note" of decisions made by the Western leaders at this week's NATO Summit in Washington, including plans to "create separate logistics hubs in Black Sea cities” and establish “additional facilities in Europe". “This poses a very serious threat to our national security. All of this will necessitate thoughtful, coordinated and effective responses from us to counter-deter NATO,” presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a conference call with reporters. Russia vows of response, angered by US plan to deploy long-range missiles in Germany

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday (July 9) urged US leaders in Washington to move forcefully in supporting Ukraine against Russia's invasion, rather than waiting for the result of the November presidential election.&nbsp;

Speaking at the Ronald Reagan Institute on the eve of the NATO summit, Zelensky said that the whole world was waiting for the elections, but that it was time "to make strong decisions".

"Everyone is waiting for November. Americans are waiting for November, in Europe, Middle East, in the Pacific, the whole world is looking towards November and, truly speaking, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin awaits November too," he said, as quoted by Reuters.

"It is time to step out of the shadows, to make strong decisions … to act and not to wait for November or any other month," Zelensky asserted.

Zelensky says can't predict what Trump would do if he wins, pushes US leaders to 'make strong decisions' now

The United States on Wednesday (May 1) accused Russia of having used "the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces" in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The statement from the US State Department further alleged that Moscow has also been using "riot control agents (tear gas) as a method of warfare in Ukraine, also in violation of the CWC."

The statement also details US sanctions against more than 280 individuals and entities "to impose additional costs on Russia for both its foreign aggression and internal repression."

Furthermore, it adds that among these are more than 80 entities and individuals, "including those engaged in the development of Russia’s future energy, metals, and mining production and export capacity; sanctions evasion and circumvention; and furthering Russia's ability to wage its war against Ukraine."

<h2>'Not an isolated incident'</h2>

The statement asserts that the use of such chemical weapons is far from an "isolated incident" and "is probably driven by Russian forces' desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield."

Slamming Moscow, the statement further states, "Russia's ongoing disregard for its obligations to the CWC comes from the same playbook as its operations to poison Aleksey Navalny and Sergei and Yulia Skripal with Novichok nerve agents."

Determining the illegal use of chemical weapons and riot weapons, America said it was imposing sanctions on three Russian state entities linked to Moscow's development of chemical and biological weapons. One of the entities is a specialised military unit that reportedly facilitated the use of chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops.

Furthermore, four Russian companies that support the three entities were also sanctioned.

Separately, the US Treasury has imposed sanctions on three entities and two individuals who were involved in buying items for Russian military institutes linked to the country's chemical and biological weapons programmes.

These sanctions freeze any US-based assets belonging to the sanctioned entities and generally prohibit Americans from doing business with them.

<h2>What is Chloropicrin?</h2>

Chloropicrin is classified as a banned choking agent by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The Hague-based organisation as per Reuters, was established to enforce and oversee compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) of 1993.

One of the earliest instances of the use of this banned chemical weapon was during World War I when German forces fired it against Allied troops.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday (Apr 29) expressed optimism that it was "not too late" for Ukraine to win its ongoing conflict with Russia, despite the significant challenges the war-torn nation faces.

Ukrainian forces, as per AFP, have been struggling in the face of Russian advances for months. The nation dependent on foreign military aid had to wait for stalled weapons deliveries from allies even as Russian troops steadily inched forward along the frontline.

"Our allies are looking into what more they can do, and I expect new announcements soon. So we are working hard to meet Ukraine's urgent needs," he added.

The urgency for increased support was echoed by President Zelensky, who said, "The Russian army is now trying to take advantage of the situation when we are expecting supplies from our partner."&nbsp;

"That is why promptness in supply literally means stabilisation of the front line," he stressed, adding, "Together, we must disrupt the Russian offensive."

The Ukrainian leader also mentioned that "some things" in the long-awaited aid "have started to arrive" because of recent approval by US President Joe Biden, but declined to "go into details".

Russia on Wednesday (Apr 24) announced a deal with Ukraine to exchange almost 50 children displaced by Moscow's 'special military invasion' on neighbour Kyiv.

This comes as Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that 16 Ukrainian children who had been "forcibly deported to Russia" were "in Qatar for medical, mental, and social recovery".&nbsp;

"All of them had previously been forcibly deported to Russia, but thanks to our friendly Qatar's mediation efforts, they have been released," said Zelensky. However, he did not address Russian claims about 48 children being exchanged.

Ukraine refuses to confirm Russia claims of exchange of 48 children

Ukraine has warned that there will be a "third world war" if it loses the conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

Speaking to BBC on Wednesday (Apr 18) in Washington, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal voiced the warning while urging the United States Congress to pass a long-stalled foreign aid bill.

<h2>'Careful optimism'</h2>

Shmyhal, as per BBC, expressed "careful optimism" that the US lawmakers would pass the measure that has $61 billion earmarked for Ukraine.

"We need this money yesterday, not tomorrow, not today," said the Ukrainian leader about the much-awaited US assistance.

"If we will not protect… Ukraine will fall," he added. "So the global, the global system of security will be destroyed… and all the world will need to find… a new system of security," he further said.

"Or, there will be many conflicts, many such kinds of wars, and in the end of the day, it could lead to the Third World War," warned Shmyhal.

Earlier, too, Ukraine has voiced similar alarming warnings about the possible consequences its defeat in the battle with Russia will bring. Just last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that after Ukraine, Russia would move on to invade Poland, triggering World War III.

<h2>Much-needed help for Ukraine</h2>

The US House of Representatives will vote on the aid package on Saturday (Apr 20). It also includes billions in funding for Israel as well as Taiwan.

Speaking to BBC on Wednesday (Apr 18) in Washington, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal voiced the warning while urging the United States Congress to pass a long-stalled foreign aid bill. 'Careful optimism' Shmyhal, as per BBC, expressed "careful optimism" that the US lawmakers would pass the measure that has $61 billion earmarked for Ukraine. "We need this money yesterday, not tomorrow, not today," said the Ukrainian leader about the much-awaited US assistance. Much-needed help for Ukraine The US House of Representatives will vote on the aid package on Saturday (Apr 20). It also includes billions in funding for Israel as well as Taiwan. It could finally get Ukraine the much-needed help to continue the battle against Russia. Biden urges Congress to pass Ukraine aid bill as Kyiv warns its defeat against Russia would lead to WW3

A team of vigilante hackers known as One Fist has been recognised by Ukraine's military for their cyber-attacks against Russia. The group that has been involved in stealing data from Russian military firms and hacking cameras to spy on troops has reportedly been sent awards of gratitude for its efforts.

While many nations have official award systems for ethical hacking, this is believed to be the first time a country has awarded hackers for such actions.

<h2>Gratitude for hacking</h2>

As per a BBC report, the certificates of gratitude were sent to the hackers from eight different countries, including the UK, the US, and Poland, for their "significant contribution to the development and maintenance of vital activities of the military".

One of the hackers, US man Kristopher Kortright, aka "Voltage," told BBC he was delighted at being officially recognised.

'Voltage' said he has devoted himself to hacking for Ukraine, even at the cost of losing his job and spending all his life's savings.

"I've lost my job doing this and spent all my life savings in pursuit of a victory for Ukraine," he said, adding, "This award is a real morale-booster."

<h2>Concerns around rewarding hacking</h2>

There are concerns about the practice of states encouraging civilian hackers, especially for malicious and possibly criminal hacks.

As per Dr Lukasz Olejnik, author of Philosophy of Cyber-security, such awards can be "dangerous".

"Giving out awards may further blur the lines between combatants and civilians, and even undermine the recent call by the ICRC to limit and end the involvement of civilians in combat operations. In the long run, such an erosion is dangerous," he said.

Emily Taylor, the chief executive of Oxford Information Labs and editor of Chatham House Cyber Policy journal believes that the hacking awards are a landmark moment that might shift thinking about how cyber volunteers are used in conflicts.

"Governments usually discourage non-state actors from taking direct action in the cyber domain, for fear of escalation or unintended consequences, but wartime is often a period of extraordinary technological innovation, and the Ukraine invasion is no exception."

"Sometimes these events force a reconsideration of issues that have previously been taboo," she remarked.

Previously, in October, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned against the use and encouragement of civilian hackers. Emphasising the need to uphold the rules of war, it even published guidelines to reinforce them.

Ukraine hands out awards to vigilante hackers for cyber-attacks against Russia

Russia has demanded that Ukraine hand over its head of the SBU Security Service. On Sunday (Mar 31), the Russian foreign ministry demanded that Kyiv must surrender all individuals linked to terrorist activities carried out in Russia, including Vasyl Maliuk, the security service chief.

Dismissing the demand as "pointless," the SBU, as per a Reuters report, reminded the Russian ministry that the nation's President Vladimir Putin has an international arrest warrant pending against him.

<h2>Russia's extradition demand</h2>

The Russian Foreign Ministry in its statement highlighted the violent incidents in Russia since its forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022. These incidents include bombings that killed the daughter of a prominent nationalist and a war blogger; and an incident in which a writer was seriously injured.&nbsp;

"The traces of these crimes lead to Ukraine," claimed the Russian ministry.

"Russia has turned over to Ukrainian authorities its demands … for the immediate arrest and extradition of all those connected to the terrorist acts in question," said the statement.

The Russian statement demanded that Ukraine cease all support for terrorist activities, extradite the guilty parties, and compensate the victims for damages.&nbsp;

It also warned that "Ukraine's violation of its obligations under anti-terrorist conventions will result in it being held to account in international legal terms."&nbsp;

Among those listed for extradition is SBU head Vasyl Maliuk, who has previously admitted that his service was behind attacks on the bridge linking Crimea to the Russian mainland since the 2022 invasion.&nbsp;

<h2>SBU's response</h2>

The SBU responded by calling the Russian demands "cynical."

Describing Russia as a "terrorist state" it said that the demands "sound particularly cynical coming from the terrorist state itself."

"Therefore, any words from the Russian Foreign Ministry are pointless," it remarked.

Referring to the arrest warrant against Putin issued by the International Criminal Court in connection with the alleged war crimes of illegally transferring Ukrainian children to Russia, it stated that "the tribunal in The Hague is waiting for him."

Putin's participation in upcoming G20 meet subject to bloc's consensus, says French President Macron

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday urged voters, including those in annexed parts of Ukraine, to cast their votes in Russia's upcoming presidential election, where he is expected to secure a victory.&nbsp;

This comes as Moldova accused Russia of violating its laws by printing ballot papers in the separatist region of Transdniestria for the Russian presidential election.

<h2>Exercise your right to vote: Putin</h2>

In a video address, Putin told citizens, "It is vital to underscore our cohesion and resolve and move forward together. Every vote you cast is valued and meaningful."

"I therefore ask you in the coming three days to exercise your right to vote," he added.

Putin's address highlighted the voters' desire for a strong, prosperous, and free Russia, "in order to raise living standards and the quality of life."&nbsp;

"And that is how it will be," he said, emphasising that voting was a "demonstration of patriotic feeling," particularly in areas of eastern and southern Ukraine now under Russian control.

Putin, who faces three challengers, none of whom have criticised him, enjoys strong support, with recent polls showing him standing at 75 per cent approval.&nbsp;

However, two candidates who were seeking to end the conflict in Ukraine have been disqualified.

<h2>Moldova's allegations&nbsp;against Russia</h2>

Meanwhile, ex-Soviet Moldova has accused Russia of breaking laws by printing ballot papers in Transdniestria ahead of the Russian presidential election.&nbsp;

"These ballots were more than likely printed right there (in Transdniestria) to avoid taking them through a border crossing," said the nation's Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian before a government meeting.

"It is hard to say how they would have been brought over a border. Moldova's borders are controlled and there is no way of legally bringing them in or taking them out."

The country's pro-European authorities also summoned the Russian ambassador to protest Russia's decision to open six polling stations in Transdniestria, arguing it breached an agreement allowing voting only at the Russian embassy in Chisinau.

Transdniestria, which split from Moldova as the Soviet Union collapsed, remains unrecognised internationally and heavily reliant on Russian support. The region's printing of ballots in defiance of Moldovan laws is seen as a challenge to Moldova's authority.

Russia election 2024: Putin urges citizens to vote even as Moldova accuses Moscow of breaking laws

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that he had approved the candidacy of former army chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi as ambassador to Britain.

Zaluzhnyi, widely seen as a national hero for overseeing Ukraine's war effort throughout Russia's full-scale invasion, was replaced last month by ground forces commander Oleksandr Syrskyi.

"Today, I approved the candidacy of our country's ambassador to the United Kingdom, General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi," Zelensky said in his nightly video address. "General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi spoke to me specifically about pursuing that direction -- a diplomatic direction."

Zelensky said Ukraine's Foreign Ministry had sent the request for approval and that "our alliance with Britain is set to strengthen further".

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told national television that the president "had long sought" a suitable candidate "and one of the key requirements was an understanding of the military context.

"Britain is one of the leaders in military help for Ukraine. It is a country which has a vision of military strategy. The new ambassador therefore had to have a deep military background," Kuleba said.

Ukraine has not had an ambassador in Britain since Zelensky dismissed former envoy Vadym Prystaiko in July 2023 after he publicly criticised the president.

Zaluzhnyi's dismissal as army chief was the focal point of a shakeup of senior positions in Ukraine's armed forces. It followed weeks of tension and speculation about possible disagreements between the president and his top commander.

Zaluzhnyi had written in a published article last November that the now-two-year-old war against Russia had entered a stage of attrition, and he called for technological advances.

Zelensky&nbsp;did not respond directly to the comments, but denied any suggestion that the war had entered a stalemate.

Zelensky&nbsp;on Thursday met British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps in Kyiv and said he had expressed gratitude for Britain's "tangible leadership" in providing support for Ukraine and working together to counter Russian actions.

A British government statement said Shapps announced a 325 million pound ($417 million) package of military aid for Ukraine, including delivery of more than 10,000 drones. A British aid package in January also provided for drones and was valued at 200 million pounds.

In his remarks, Zelensky said priority areas of cooperation were boosting air defences, long-range weapons, and artillery and joint production of weapons, and bringing Russia to account.

"We have already reached a historically unprecedented level of cooperation with Britain," Zelensky&nbsp;said, referring to Britain as the first of several countries to sign an accord extending security guarantees to Ukraine.

A senior Ukrainian military commander, on Wednesday, said that the Ukrainian military is working to stabilise the battlefield situation and intends to form units for counter-offensive actions against Russia later this year.

<h2>Stabilisation&nbsp;</h2>

"We will stabilise the situation shortly," said Oleksandr Pavliuk, Ukraine's newly appointed ground force commander, in televised remarks.&nbsp;

They will "do everything possible to prepare the troops for more active actions, and to seize the initiative," he said.

As per a Reuters report, Pavliuk explained that the current focus is on withdrawing military units that have lost their potential and rebuilding them to create a force for counter-offensive actions later this year.

<h2>Ukraine's setbacks</h2>

Just last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia would try to launch a new offensive in the spring or summer. However, he emphasised that Ukraine has its own battlefield plan.

According to Ukrainian military spokesperson Dmytro Lykhoviy, Russian forces were unable to make further advances near Avdiivka. During remarks on national television on Wednesday, he noted that Russian troops are concentrating their efforts on an area to the south, near the village of Novomykhailivka.

Maksym Zhorin, a Ukrainian commander in the region, also confirmed that Russian forces are facing challenges in advancing since the capture of Avdiivka and several neighbouring villages. He mentioned that their latest target is the village of Orlivka.

"They are constantly attempting to advance and make progress wherever possible," Zhorin wrote on Telegram. "Despite significant losses, they persist in launching assaults, both day and night."

This comes as the Ukrainian forces faced a setback after nine months of relatively stable front lines when the eastern city of Avdiivka fell to Russian forces earlier in February after enduring months of devastating attacks. Ukraine was compelled to pull back its troops from several neighbouring areas due to Russia's continuous offensive and dwindling ammunition supplies. To replenish these supplies, Ukraine urgently requires a vital aid package from the US, which has been delayed by Republicans in Congress.

As per a Reuters report, Pavliuk explained that the current focus is on withdrawing military units that have lost their potential and rebuilding them to create a force for counter-offensive actions later this year. Ukraine's setbacks Just last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia would try to launch a new offensive in the spring or summer. Also read | Alexei Navalny's wife calls for big protest on Russian election day Maksym Zhorin, a Ukrainian commander in the region, also confirmed that Russian forces are facing challenges in advancing since the capture of Avdiivka and several neighbouring villages. He mentioned that their latest target is the village of Orlivka. "They are constantly attempting to advance and make progress wherever possible," Zhorin wrote on Telegram. "Despite significant losses, they persist in launching assaults, both day and night." This comes as the Ukrainian forces faced a setback after nine months of relatively stable front lines when the eastern city of Avdiivka fell to Russian forces earlier in February after enduring months of devastating attacks. Ukraine was compelled to pull back its troops from several neighbouring areas due to Russia's continuous offensive and dwindling ammunition supplies. To replenish these supplies, Ukraine urgently requires a vital aid package from the US, which has been delayed by Republicans in Congress. (With inputs from agencies)

US announces over 500 sanctions against Russia to 'ensure Putin pays an even steeper price for his aggression'

Russia on Friday (Feb 23rd) announced a significant expansion of the list of European Union officials and politicians banned from entering Russia. This comes in response to the latest round of sanctions by the bloc.

<h2>'Fruitless attempts'</h2>

In a statement the Russian foreign ministry called the European Union's latest sanctions "fruitless attempts to put pressure," and said that the prohibitions are a response to the "unfriendly actions."

"The European Union is continuing its fruitless attempts to put pressure on Russia through unilateral restrictive measures," it said.

"In response to these unfriendly actions, the Russian side has significantly expanded the list of representatives of European institutions and EU member states, who…are prohibited from entering the territory of our state."

As per a Reuters report quoting the Russian foreign ministry, the latest stop list includes representatives of law enforcement agencies and commercial organisations who provided military assistance to its neighbour, Ukraine. Additionally, representatives of European institutions involved in the prosecution of Russian officials, and those who gathered material to support the idea of confiscating Russian state assets feature on the said list.

'Bad signal': Ukraine's Zelensky expresses concern over potential decrease in aid from US

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a resolute New Year's address on Sunday (Dec 31), pledged to unleash formidable "wrath" against Russian forces throughout 2024. The leader of the war-torn nation vowed this, undeterred by what he said were attempts to "undermine" support for Kyiv.

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin's New Year's Eve address was notably scaled back compared to last year,&nbsp;and was also devoid of any mention of the conflict in Ukraine.

<h2>'Our real wrath'</h2>

Zelesnky's declaration, as per AFP, comes less than 72 hours after an aerial assault by Moscow on Ukrainian cities. The barrage of missiles and drones resulted in 39 casualties, marking&nbsp;one of the biggest aerial attacks since Russia invaded Ukraine.

In the televised address, Zelensky promised a substantial increase in Ukraine's military capabilities in the upcoming year.

"Next year, the enemy will feel the wrath of domestic production," he said. His televised address was accompanied by clips of Ukrainian artillery and fighter jets.

He said that the nation will bolster its arsenal with at least "a million" additional drones and F-16 fighter jets, delivered by Kyiv's Western allies.&nbsp;

Despite receiving substantial support, Ukraine encountered difficulties in achieving a breakthrough during its 2023 counteroffensive against the invading Russian forces. Moscow, meanwhile, escalated pressure along the front lines, capturing the eastern town of Marinka in December and intensifying efforts to control Kupiansk in the northeast.

On the other hand, refraining from mentioning Ukraine by name, Russian President Putin in his New Year's speech said: "To everyone who is at a combat post, at the forefront of the fight for truth and justice: You are our heroes, our hearts are with you. <h2>The Pope and Ukraine</h2>

The Pope in his Christmas Day Message had called for an end to the multiple global conflicts, including the one in Ukraine. Before that, in November, renewing his persistent calls for an end to violence in Ukraine and the Middle East, he had stressed that "peace is possible" and that "we must not resign ourselves."

Additionally, as part of his peace efforts in Ukraine, the Pope has sent a special envoy, Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, to Kyiv, Moscow, Washington, and Beijing.

<h2>What is Zelensky's peace plan?</h2>

The Ukrainian leader, as per Reuters, has said that his nation's peace formula will next be discussed in Davos, Switzerland. However, he is yet to reveal the date.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky first announced his 10-point peace formula in November 2022, at a summit of the Group of 20 major economies. The plan calls for:

1. Radiation and nuclear safety, with a focus on Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia.

2. Food security, including a restoration of Ukraine's grain exports to the world's poorest nations.

3. Energy security, with a focus on protecting Ukraine's infrastructure that has been targeted by Russia and price restrictions on Russian energy resources.

4. 'All for all' release of prisoners and deportees, including war prisoners and children deported to Russia.

5. Restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity and Russia reaffirming it according to the UN Charter, which the peace plan says is "not up to negotiations".

6. Withdrawal of Russian troops and cessation of hostilities, including the restoration of Ukraine's state borders with Russia.

7. Justice, with the focus on the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian for war crimes it has allegedly committed.

8. Immediate protection of environment.

9. Prevention of escalation of conflict, and building mechanism to "prevent any chance of its repetition. For this it demands the set-up of security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space, including guarantees for Ukraine.

10. Confirmation of the war's end, that comes with an official document signed by the involved parties.

<h2>Zelensky yet to endorse</h2>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, earlier this month, during his end-of-year news conference on December 19, disclosed that the military has proposed mobilising an additional 450,000-500,000 Ukrainians.&nbsp;

Acknowledging the "highly sensitive" nature of the issue, he said that between the military and the government would precede any decision to submit the proposal to parliament.

Zelensky is yet to publicly endorse the proposal. Expressing his desire to hear more arguments in favour of mobilising additional personnel, he said, "This is a very serious number".

Ukraine considers lowering military mobilisation age to 25, almost two years into war with Russia

The Russia-Ukraine war has crossed into its 651st day, and Kyiv is struggling for funds.&nbsp;As the US Congress continues to ponder over the $60 billion aid proposal by President Joe Biden, on Tuesday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the funding request failure means the country would be "responsible for Ukraine's defeat".&nbsp;

<h2>What Yellen said</h2>

On Tuesday, during a trip to Mexico City, Yellen told reporters that the funding - particularly for Ukraine's general government budget suppor was "utterly essential" and that it was a pre-condition to keep International Monetary Fund (IMF) support flowing to war-torn Ukraine.

"I've talked to members of Congress, my colleagues have. I think they understand this, that this is a dire situation and we can hold ourselves responsible for Ukraine's defeat if we don't manage to get this funding to Ukraine that's needed, and I'm including direct budget support here because that's utterly essential," said Yellen.

"Ukraine is just running out of money," she said.&nbsp;

"They’re spending more than every penny they're taking in, in tax revenue, on military salaries and defence, and they wouldn’t have any schools or hospital or first responders if not for the money we’re sending to them to support them."

This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff voiced a similar warning.

<h2>A 'big risk'</h2>

Also on Tuesday, Andriy Yermak said that the postponement of US assistance would create a "big risk" of Ukraine losing the war against Russia.

These remarks, as per Reuters, were some of the frankest yet by a senior Kyiv official.

He said that if the aid is postponed, "it gives the big risk that we can be in the same position to which we're located now."

"And of course, it makes this very high possibility impossible to continually liberate and give the big risk to lose this war," he added.

<h2>Zelensky's upcoming video&nbsp;summit with G7 leaders</h2>

Just hours after he unexpectedly skipped a virtual meeting with US senators, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will join a video summit with the leaders of the G7.

The summit is slated to be held on Wednesday (Dec 6). As per chair Japan's spokesperson Hirokazu Matsuno, the meeting will see Zelensky "join the first part".

Zelensky, during the meeting with US senators, was expected to press them for the $60 billion aid package.&nbsp;

During the video meeting, the talks, as per a Reuters report citing a White House official, are expected to cover Ukraine, the Middle East, support for developing countries, and artificial intelligence.

<h2>Russian lawmaker expresses concern</h2>

Lawmaker Anton Tkachev has voiced concerns about alleged plans by the Russian government to effectively block all Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).&nbsp;

Tkachev argued that implementing a broad restriction on all VPNs would intensify pressure on Russians, restricting their access to everyday devices. The move, if enforced, could impact citizens' ability to use common household appliances that rely on internet connectivity, he said.

In response to Tkachev's address, the digital ministry as quoted by the RIA has issued a reply. It said that "On the basis of a decision by the expert commission… the filtration of certain VPN services and VPN protocols can be carried out on the mobile communication network for foreign traffic which is identified as a threat."

<h2>Russia and VPNs</h2>

Russia as per Reuters put in place restrictions on access to certain Western social media platforms after President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of troops into Ukraine in February 2022.&nbsp;

Following that, the demand for VPN services experienced a significant surge. According to RIA, the Russian digital ministry has identified this circumvention of restrictions on specific information as a potential threat.

Previously, in 2017, Russia implemented a law mandating VPN technology providers to collaborate with Russian authorities, compelling them to restrict access to content banned by Russia. Failure to comply with this law could result in prohibition. However, despite these regulations, VPN services continue to be widely used in Russia.&nbsp;

Russia to ban VPN services 'identified as a threat'

Germany wants Ukraine to begin formal talks on joining the European Union (EU) by the end of the year.&nbsp;Speaking at a conference in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Thursday said that she was confident that next month the EU would advance Kyiv's membership bid.

<h2>EU enlargement</h2>

Baerbock, as per a Reuters report, presented the prospect of the bloc's enlargement as a geo-strategic necessity.

She suggested that candidate nations should be given some of the benefits of an EU membership even before they fully enter the bloc.

The German minister said there was a need to plough ahead with "tedious" internal reforms so that it could function with 30-plus members and greater centralisation of power within the EU.&nbsp;

According to the Times, she proposed this could be done by stripping individual countries of their veto rights and simplification of the sprawling administrative apparatus — under which 27 member states are in charge of their own individual policy brief.

"We want to see Ukraine a member of our European Union," she said, adding, "The European Union has to be enlarged. That is the geo-political consequence of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine."

<h2>EU to decide soon</h2>

As per Reuters, the EU will soon reach a decision on the start of talks about Ukraine joining the bloc. They are expected to reach a decision about the beginning of the formal start of Kyiv's membership talks at the December 14-15 summit.

"I am convinced that the European Council in December is going to send out that signal," said the German Minister.

"However, an enlarged EU will only be stronger if we do what we have been so hesitant to do for so long - review and rethink the way in which our union functions," she added.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine 'optimistic'</h2>

AFP reports that speaking ahead of the conference in Berlin, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Kyiv was optimistic about its efforts to open EU membership talks this year.

"We are optimistic. We did a lot of reforms and we passed legislation necessary to meet, to implement the recommendations," said Kuleba.&nbsp;

"So we are looking forward to the presentation of this report and I have reasons to believe that it will pave the way to the decision of the European Council on opening accession talks with Ukraine."

The war-torn nation applied for the supranational political and economic union's membership just days after Russia launched its invasion on 24 February 2022.
