A woman in Cornwall, a small county in England, was slapped with a double fine after she tore up her first ticket. A civil enforcement officer first gave her a parking ticket for leaving her car in a no-loading zone in Falmouth, Cornwall. She later came, removed the ticket, tore it up and threw it on the floor. She was then charged an additional £250 ($335 or Rs 28,000) for littering. The local council shared the videos captured by the officer's body camera. The woman can be seen taking off the first ticket and throwing it on the ground. Her actions led to two fines - one for the parking and another for littering. The amount was later reduced to £150 as it was paid earlier than due time. Since she had destroyed the first ticket, another notice for the parking offence was sent to her. The video also shows her yelling at the officer.&nbsp;Cornwall has come down pretty heavily on people who litter. Besides this woman, two others were earlier fined for scattering garbage. This includes a man who threw an egg custard carton from his vehicle on a country lane in the St Austell area. Another woman was caught dropping a bottle in Falmouth and was slapped with a £250 penalty. The culprits were identified through CCTV footage. The local council saw the videos, after which probes were launched to search for the two offenders. They admitted to their actions and paid an early fine of £150.&nbsp;Cornwall officials are pretty serious about keeping their town clean and are clear that any offenders will be caught and punished. County councillor Thalia Marrington, portfolio holder for community safety and public health, said, “Cornwall is beautiful, and we want to keep it that way. There is no excuse for dropping litter, and when we have evidence of these offences, we will always try to trace those responsible." She added that CCTV videos are being used to capture offenders. Thailia also urged the community to report anyone who they see littering. "More and more people now have doorbell and home security cameras that capture this type of offence," she said, requesting anyone who sees something to report it. &nbsp;

The United Kingdom on Tuesday (Jul 15) revealed a secret scheme involving thousands of Afghans, who worked for the UK government, and their families were relocated to Britain after a data breach in 2022 that put their lives at risk. A doctor is warning about the dangers of exposing babies to hormone treatments, which many parents are taking these days. Professor Jovanna Dahlgren, an expert in paediatric endocrinology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, told a Swedish newspaper about an incident that occurred eight years ago, where a baby girl was exposed to abnormally high levels of testosterone while getting skin-to-skin from her father. The man was using the testosterone gel product, an artificial version of the male sex hormone at the time. The parents got worried when the baby's genitalia started to appear strange. The clitoris grew longer, and her labia closed over to resemble a male scrotum. Doctors carried out blood tests of the 10-month-old baby to understand the problem. They found that problem after which the parents took the needed steps, and the baby's condition reversed. Notably, the testosterone gel product is used by men who experience lethargy and a low sex drive. "I don't think people always understand how potent these treatments are," she said. The professor cited another case where a 10-year-old boy developed breasts. The doctors found that it was because of the female sex hormone treatment that his mother was taking. In the UK, the testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is seeing a growth, with several private companies reaching out to men. While it was once only used to treat the problem of low levels of sex hormone in older men, it is now being marketed to younger men, promising them higher energy levels and a stronger erection. In 2023, the UK drug safety regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), said that a British child exposed to the testosterone gel product experienced "increased growth and genital enlargement." This led to the body issuing urgent warnings to parents using the products to be careful around children. They were advised to wash their hands properly and prevent children from coming in contact with them. Women using hormone-based medications to treat menopause were also told to keep them away from children and other adults. Testosterone is present in both men and women, but at much lower levels in the latter. The hormone levels drop in some men after the age of 40, something that is also referred to as "manopause." Lack of this hormone in men can lead to depression, loss of sex drive or erectile dysfunction. Poor sleep, brain fog and increased fat around the belly or chest can also be seen in some men.&nbsp; &nbsp;

A man, now 92, has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of a 75-year-old widow in the 1960s, in what appears to be the UK’s longest-running cold case ever solved. The court told the man that he will die in prison. Ryland Headley was 34 when he forced open a window at the home of Louisa Dunne, 75, in the Easton area of Bristol in June 1967 before attacking her. Nearly six decades later, Headley was finally sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years after a jury at Bristol Crown Court found him guilty of both charges on Monday afternoon. Britain made a historic move towards legalising euthanasia on Friday (June 20) as Members of Parliament (MPs) supported a contentious bill that would enact assisted dying for those who are terminally ill. Members of Parliament voted 314 to 291 in the House of Commons to send the proposal to the House of Lords for further review, after four hours of tearful debate. The vote sparked jubilation among supporters who had rallied outside Parliament, saying they believed that legalising euthanasia would provide choice and dignity for individuals with incurable illnesses near the end of their lives. Meanwhile, protesters at a counter-demonstration outside offered concerns that vulnerable patients might be coerced into taking the option of death and urged lawmakers to focus instead on enhancing palliative care. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill would permit assisted suicide in England and Wales for terminally ill adults with less than six months to live. Individuals would have to administer the life-ending drug themselves, and their choice would have to be approved by two doctors and an expert panel. If enacted, the bill would align Britain with a number of European and other countries — including Belgium and the Netherlands — that have already legalized some aspect of assisted dying.&nbsp;Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, who introduced the bill, said in Friday's third reading debate that amending the law would "provide a compassionate and safe option" for terminally ill individuals. She contended that maintaining the existing prohibition would lead to additional "heartbreaking stories" of "pain and trauma, suicide attempts, PTSD, lonely journeys to Switzerland, (and) police investigations." Labour MP Vicky Foxcroft, however, had concerns that the bill lacked robust enough measures to safeguard disabled people. We need to safeguard these individuals who are vulnerable to coercion, who already feel that society doesn't care for them, who too often feel like a burden to the state, to society and to their family," she said. Outside Parliament, protesters carried signs reading "Let us choose" and "Don't make doctors killers. David Walker, 82, testified about his own experience of advocating for the bill after he watched his wife struggle for three years at the end of her life.&nbsp; "That's why I'm here, because I can't help her anymore, but I can help other people who are going through the same thing, because if you have no quality of life, you have nothing," he was quoted saying to AFP. &nbsp;But physician Elizabeth Burden, aged 52, cautioned that the bill could create a "slippery slope" that would open assisted dying to more and more people. "Once we open the door for this. Everything will slide down because dementia patients, all patients. are vulnerable," she was quoted saying to AFP. MPs had originally supported an earlier draft of the bill in November by 330 votes to 275. There have been a number of changes since then, such as a prohibition on advertising assisted dying and measures to permit all healthcare professionals to opt out of involvement. Legislators also included a provision to rule out eligibility "alone because of abstaining from eating or drinking, voluntarily," essentially excluding instances such as individuals with anorexia. Britain's medical establishment is still divided, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer's cabinet is also divided. His health and justice secretaries have also come out publicly against the bill. But support for it is high among the public. A YouGov survey of 2,003 adults, carried out in the last month and released on Thursday, revealed that 73 per cent of those polled backed the establishment of an assisted dying law. The legislation is now passed to the House of Lords, which has to rubber-stamp the law by the end of the current parliamentary session, possibly in the autumn, or else it will expire. If enacted and passed royal assent, the legislation would take some four years to come into effect before assisted dying services would be available. An estimate this month by a government impact assessment put the number of assisted deaths in the first year at 160 to 640, which could reach 4,500 in a decade. &nbsp;Assisted suicide is presently outlawed in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with a maximum sentence of 14 years. At the same time, another assisted dying bill is making its way through the devolved Scottish Parliament. In March, the Isle of Man became the first British region to approve an assisted dying bill.

UKs assisted dying bill soon to be reality MPs give nod if passed from House of Lords what would it mean

Pakistanis made up the largest group of asylum seekers in the United Kingdom over the past year, new figures from the Home Office have revealed. Between April 2024 and March 2025, a total of 11,048 Pakistanis applied for asylum, accounting for 10.1% of all applications.This is a significant rise from the previous year, when 7,003 Pakistani nationals applied, placing them third on the list at the time, with 7.5% of total claims.<h2>UK sees highest-ever annual asylum applications</h2>Overall, the UK received 109,343 asylum applications in the year to March 2025, the highest number recorded for any 12 months since current records began in 2001. That’s a 17% increase from the 93,150 applications recorded in the previous year.This also surpasses the earlier record of 108,138 asylum claims made in the year ending December 2024.<h2>Afghan and Syrian nationals follow closely behind</h2>Afghan nationals were the second largest group of asylum seekers this year, with 8,069 applications, making up 7.4% of the total. That’s a drop from the 9,738 Afghan claims (10.5%) recorded in 2023–24, when they topped the list.Syrian nationals also saw a notable increase in asylum requests, with 6,175 applications in 2024–25, up from 4,232 the year before. They now account for 5.6% of the total.<h2>Small boat arrivals contribute to rising numbers</h2>The figures also show that around 33% of asylum seekers in the past year arrived after crossing the English Channel in small boats, a continued concern for UK immigration authorities.Despite the surge in claims, the backlog of pending asylum cases has dropped to its lowest level in years.<h2>Backlog drops, but tens of thousands still waiting</h2>By the end of March 2025, 109,536 people were waiting for an initial decision on their asylum claim. That’s a 12% drop from 124,802 cases in December 2024, and the lowest figure since December 2021.The backlog had reached a peak of 175,457 cases in June 2023, the highest since current records began in 2010.Of those still waiting, 67,373 people had been in limbo for more than six months, though that’s down from 73,866 at the end of December and far below the 139,961 long-term cases seen in mid-2023.<h2>Deportations rise as UK boosts immigration enforcement</h2>Separate Home Office figures show a slight drop in enforced returns, with 2,312 removals recorded from January to March 2025, down from 2,365 in the previous quarter. However, both figures are higher than in any quarter since 2018.Home Secretary Yvette Cooper commented on the growing enforcement efforts, saying, “We have substantially increased immigration enforcement, taking strong action to return more foreign criminals and failed asylum seekers who have no right to be in the UK."“The work of Immigration Enforcement teams to substantially increase illegal working raids, returns and deportations is an important part of strengthening our border security," she added.“As part of the Immigration White Paper reforms, we will strengthen the rules so that more foreign national offenders can be returned,” Yvette said.

Disclaimer: Some readers may find the story disturbing. Discretion is advised. Nicholas Prosper, a 19-year-old in the UK who killed his mother, brother and sister and went on to carry out a mass school shooting before being arrested, has been sentenced to jail for 49 years, without the possibility of parole.
Prosper had pleaded guilty in February to killing his mother Juliana Falcon, 48, sister Giselle Prosper, 13, and brother Kyle Prosper, 16, at the family's home in Luton, Bedfordshire, on September 13 last year.&nbsp;
Prosper, who also stabbed his brother over 100 times, was not given a life sentence due to his age at the time of the crime - he was 18 - and his guilty plea.
&ldquo;Your ambition was notoriety. You wanted to be known posthumously as the world&rsquo;s most famous school shooter of the 21st century,&rdquo; said Luton Crown Court Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb addressing Prosper, who had initially refused to attend the court to hear the verdict on Wednesday (Mar 19).
She noted how there were several &ldquo;recurrent themes&rdquo; in his case similar to other mass shootings, such as sexual interest in children, withdrawal into an online world, a lack of empathy and a &ldquo;uniform&rdquo; for the killings, which he planned to carry out on a Friday the 13th. The date choice was deliberate given the superstitions attached to it.

Ahead of the Washington visit, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to increase the UK’s defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, with a long-term goal of reaching 3% in the next parliament. The UK currently spends 2.3% of GDP on defence, and this move marks the largest sustained military budget increase since the Cold War. Starmer outlined that the rise will be funded by reducing overseas development aid from 0.5 to 0.3 percent of GDP, a decision that signals a shift in government priorities toward military modernization and nato commitments.

It revealed the NCA and Dutch police began working on the case in 2018 after "the vast scale" of the gang's offending became clear, police said. The group is believed to have imported more than 50 tonnes of heroin, cocaine and cannabis in various separate smuggling operations. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds told Sky News on Saturday the storm posed a "challenging situation".

Two men were killed as a result of trees falling on their cars in separate incidents in Lancashire, northwest England, and in the west Midlands.

In Wales, the Met Office estimated gusts of up to 150 kilometres per hour (93 miles per hour), with a "major incident" declared in parts of Wales due to the extensive disruption.

The storm has had "very significant effects in many parts of Wales, including on transport, energy infrastructure and property", the Welsh devolved leader said in a statement, warning that the effects could be "felt for some days yet".

As of Saturday afternoon 177,000 homes in England, Scotland and Wales were without power, according to the Energy Networks Association.

Trains were disrupted or suspended on several routes including from Glasgow to Edinburgh in Scotland, and between Cambridge and Stansted Airport in eastern England. &nbsp;

Rail operator CrossCountry, which operates nationwide, put a "do not travel" notice in place for Saturday due to cancellations and severe delays.&nbsp;

Network Rail Wales suspended trains on the Welsh northern coast due to a "fallen tree blocking the line", and several bridges in southern England and Wales were closed for safety reasons.

In Northern Ireland, thousands were left without power, and several bus and train services were suspended or delayed.

Christmas markets and sporting events were postponed, including the Merseyside derby between Premier League leaders Liverpool and Everton.

In Ireland, which issued an "orange" wind warning, 175,000 homes were without electricity as of Saturday evening, according to ESB Networks, which said there was "widespread and extensive damage to electricity infrastructure".

Dublin Airport said "a number of flights scheduled for Saturday morning have been cancelled by airlines" due to the storm.

Darragh comes two weeks after Storm Bert battered much of Britain, causing "devastating" flooding in parts of Wales and knocking out power to thousands of homes in Ireland.

The UK's Met Office had issued a rare red alert for high winds overnight to Saturday morning (0300 to 1100 GMT) covering parts of Wales and southwest England.

A separate amber warning, which is less serious than the red alert but still flags a "potential risk to life and property", covering a larger stretch of the UK and Northern Ireland is in place until Saturday night.

Rising cases of flu and the vomiting bug norovirus are keeping the National Health Service (NHS) of England busier than usual this winter. The medical director of NHS, Prof Sir Stephen Powis, said that around 95 per cent of beds in the hospitals are already occupied and it's just the start of December. These kind of rates only were seen in the depths of winter. Sir Stephen, who is also the most senior doctor, said, “The NHS is busier than it has ever been before heading into winter, with flu and norovirus numbers in hospitals rising sharply - and we are still only at the start of December, so we expect pressure to increase and there is a long winter ahead of us" Also read | Colombian hitwoman 'The Doll', her accomplice 'Fat Hitwoman' arrested for several murders “For a while, there have been warnings of a ‘tripledemic’ of Covid, flu and RSV this winter, but with rising cases of norovirus, this could fast become a ‘quad-demic’," he further added. This comes after the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said hitting the 18-week target for non-urgent hospital care is one of his six long-term priorities for government. Starmer's statement has made senior doctors in the UK accuse the government of avoiding the immediate "crisis" facing the emergency system. Ambulances in the country are supposed to hand over patients to hospital staff within 15 minutes, but last week 67 per cent of arrivals took 44 minutes on average, according to BBC. Dr Tim Cooksley, of the Society for Acute Medicine, told BBC that patients in medical emergencies were facing "appalling conditions and prolonged waits". Also read | Chinese defence minister Dong Jun makes public appearance amid reports of graft probe "It's an ongoing crisis which remains far from being resolved effectively. The extra cases of winter viruses, such as Covid, flu and RSV, mean many hospitals will fall into critical incidents given the relentless challenges we have faced all year round," he told BBC. Cooksley further added, "Despite the positive rhetoric around tackling waiting lists, our concern is that the government continues to avoid acknowledging overtly that there will be no elective recovery without emergency care recovery. The two are dependent and need a coherent, coordinated approach". (With inputs from agencies)

People in Britain were reported facing disruptions while travelling by rail on Friday (Dec. 6) after a fault faced by train drivers in a radio system they use.

In a statement, Network Rail said “There is a nationwide fault with the communication system used between train drivers and signallers. As a result, services across the National Rail network may be subject to disruption this morning," Network Rail said in a statement.&nbsp;

The organisation further said that trains across the network will start their journey later than usual time because “of a nationwide fault with the onboard ‘GSMR radio system that allows communication between train drivers and signal operators".

A total of five routes were affected due to the disruption.&nbsp;

ScotRail, in a post on social media, assured passengers that the disruption does not affect the safety of trains.&nbsp;

“Due to a national fault with the radio system between drivers and signallers, services are subject to delays. Please note that this does not affect the safety of the train running as alternative methods are in place. The emir, 44, and his consort, Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad Al Thani, arrived at Stansted Airport east of London. The state visit will begin Tuesday when the Qatari couple are greeted by the heir to the throne Prince William and his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, at their residence at Kensington Palace in west London. The royal couple will then meet King Charles, 76, and Queen Camilla, 77, at the Horse Guards Parade in central London where they will receive a ceremonial welcome. The government says a deal could boost the UK economy by around £1.6 billion ($2 billion) and open up lucrative markets to British firms. The visit will include a state banquet at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening and talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Downing Street on Wednesday. Mauritius' newly elected Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam said he has asked the United Kingdom (UK) to give an independent review on a deal over the future of the Chagos Islands.

Mauritius' newly elected Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam said he has asked the United Kingdom (UK) to give an independent review on a deal over the future of the Chagos Islands. Under the agreement, the UK would relinquish sovereignty over the archipelago. However, the county will maintain a 99-year lease over Diego Garcia - largest island of the Chagos Archipelago. The place is home to a major military airbase of the US and the UK. A spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told BBC that the Mauritian PM "indicated he was open" to the historic deal. Ramgoolam was elected as the prime minister two weeks ago. Watch | Unoccupied Ukraine Should Be Taken Under NATO Umbrella: Zelensky × At the time when the deal was signed, Pravind Jugnauth was the PM of Mauritius. He, along with Starmer, had said at that time that it was a "seminal moment in our relationship and a demonstration of our enduring commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes and the rule of law". But during his election campaign, Ramgoolam called the agreement a "sell-out" which was motivated by desperation ahead of the election. Arvin Boolell, the newly appointed minister of agro-industry and fisheries, slammed the previous government for granting such a long lease to the UK over Diego Garcia. He claimed that the duration of the lease was 200 years, but the publicised timeframe said it was 99 years for the initial period. It is not the newly elected government of Mauritius that has objections to the deal. US President-elect Donald Trump' 's pick for secretary of state, Marco Rubio, had said in October that the deal posed a "serious threat" to US national security by giving the islands to a country allied with China. But the British PM and his Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, have called the agreement 'a good deal'. "I'm very, very confident that this is a deal that the Mauritians will see, in a cross-party sense, as a good deal for them," Lammy said on November 28. The deal is still subject to the finalisation of a treaty. (With inputs from agencies)

At the same time, it has increased its stockpiles of enriched uranium and the level of enrichment to 60 per cent. That level is close, according to the IAEA, to the 90 per cent-plus threshold required for a nuclear warhead, and substantially higher than the 3.67 per cent limit it agreed to in 2015. A self-confessed smuggler narrated how he made more than 1,000 Vietnamese people enter the United Kingdom illegally and called this business "lucrative", while speaking to BBC.

The smuggler, who called himself Thanh, spoke about the ways in which criminal enterprises took advantage of migrants who wanted to cross the channel.

He said that Vietnamese travel a lot for work and because of lax EU work visa regulations, they now have a clear route to bring people to the UK from the Asian country.

In his interview with the BBC, Thanh said that he had appealed for asylum in Britain after he entered the country by crossing the channel on a small boat and paying double the amount which is paid by other migrants.

He said that he informed the UK authorities that he had been trafficked to increase the chances of asylum.

"That's the way it's done. [People lie] in order to continue the asylum process safely," he added.

Thanh said that when he was camping in a forest near Dunkirk, he first started to help people-smuggling gangs in exchange for £250 (approx. $324) for every successful trip.&nbsp;

He became famous among the gang of smugglers but he was caught and put behind bars in Europe.

After he was released, Thanh travelled to the UK and made efforts to leave behind the smuggling of people.

However, he said his reputation has forced him to make a living by forging documents for the new arrivals in the United Kingdom.

"People in Europe contacted me asking for help.&nbsp;I'd already helped about 1,000 people to get to the UK successfully, so I was well known for that success," Thanh said.

"I had a lot of clients. Depending on which embassy it was, we would provide forged bank statements or other documents. First, we would submit these online. If certain embassies needed to check with banks, then we'd put real cash into a bank account. We had arrangements with staff at certain banks," he added.&nbsp;

"The clients couldn't access the money themselves, but the bank staff would show the [falsified] details to embassy staff. We worked with lots of different types of Vietnamese banks," stated the smuggler.

Thanh said that he has now decided to speak about his criminal activities to make Vietnamese people understand that the journey to Europe is not worth it.

"I just want people in Vietnam to understand that it’s not worth borrowing lots of money to travel here. It’s not so easy for illegal arrivals to find work or make money. And when they do make money it’s less than in the past," he said.&nbsp;

A diplomatic embarrassment grapples the United Kingdom as the Commonwealth heads of government plan to look at&nbsp;reparatory justice for transatlantic slave trade and demand slavery reparations of up to £18 trillion ($24 trillion) from the country.

Starmer's office said the issue is not a part of the summit of 56 Commonwealth countries being held in Samoa from October 21 to 26.

The United Kingdom has planned to use the weight-loss drugs to help unemployed people with obesity get back to work, British Health Minister Wes Streeting said on Tuesday. &nbsp;

London has been planning to test US firm Eli Lilly's Mounjaro jab amid the increasing popularity of the diabetes medication Ozempic and Wegovy from Danish pharma giant Novo Nordisk to treat obesity.

Streeting said that obesity was causing people to take an extra four sick days and was placing a huge burden on the state-run health care system.&nbsp;

Unemployed people in UK may get weight loss jabs to return to work

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer marks 100 days in office this weekend, already seeking to reboot his new Labour government after a stuttering return to power following 14 years in opposition.

Starmer's first weeks in office have been overshadowed by rows about gifts to ministers and a cut in welfare payments for millions of pensioners that have tanked his personal poll ratings.

He has also faced accusations of discouraging overseas investment by repeatedly blaming the former Conservative administration for bequeathing Labour a dire economic inheritance and warning that further pain lies ahead.

"It hasn't gone well," said Steven Fielding, a political scientist at the University of Nottingham and author of several books on the Labour Party.

"If this is a start of a march towards (Starmer's pledge of) national renewal, the first footsteps were very uncertain," he told AFP.

Observers note the early missteps were largely self-inflicted: failing to shut down the "freebies" row and misjudging anger over removing winter fuel payments for 10 million elderly people.

<h2>'Flat-footed'&nbsp;</h2>

While Starmer promised a "government of service", he was accused of hypocrisy for accepting thousands of pounds worth of clothes and tickets when he was asking Britons to make sacrifices.

Even though the donations were within parliament's rules, Starmer announced he would return around £6,000 ($7,840) worth -- but only after the scandal had been allowed to grow for several weeks.

"He's clearly a very good administrator," Fielding said of Starmer, a human rights lawyer and chief state prosecutor before entering politics.

"(But) there have always been questions about his political antennae." Labour, he said, had been "flat-footed" in taking control of the news agenda.

Observers say the decision to delay the budget until the party's fourth month in office left a vacuum that newspapers&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;particularly right-wing, Tory-supporting ones&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;were only too happy to fill with negative stories.

Scheduling the budget for October 30 meant the winter fuel cut gained more attention because it was announced in isolation, while government departments are in limbo about what they can announce, experts say.

<h2>Change at the top</h2>

Labour grandee Harriet Harman has said early "clunkiness" was to be expected since Labour had not been in government since Gordon Brown was prime minister in 2010.

Starmer, known to be ruthless when things are not going well, has already attempted a reset by parting company with his chief of staff, civil service veteran Sue Gray, who oversaw Labour's landslide vote triumph.

Her departure last weekend and the appointment of Labour insider Morgan McSweeney is expected to add a sharper political edge to government messaging.

"They do need to tell a more uplifting story about what they are doing," said Patrick Diamond, a Downing Street policy adviser when Labour was last in Number 10.

The government can point to several positive policy announcements in its first months, including on green energy, homebuilding and workers' rights, he pointed out.

Labour has launched a publicly owned clean energy company, lifted a de facto ban on new onshore wind farms and pledged to cut planning regulations to help build 1.5 million new homes.

On Thursday, it unveiled employment legislation that includes a ban on zero-hour contracts, improvements to sick and maternity pay, and measures aimed at making it harder for employers to sack staff.

Unions welcomed the bill, which comes after Labour ended drawn-out strikes in the public and private sectors.

<h2>European 'reset'</h2>

Starmer has also been busy attending international summits and travelling to European capitals seeking to repair relations with allies that were damaged by Brexit.&nbsp;

His official spokesman insisted this week that Starmer was focused on "delivering the change that he was elected to deliver" and it was "up to the public to determine what is success".

So far it appears unimpressed: a poll last month found that Starmer's popularity had slumped 45 points since the election, making him more unpopular than defeated Tory opponent Rishi Sunak.

Diamond notes that Labour's flagship policies are mid- and long-term projects. With the next election likely five years away, and a historically low number of Tory lawmakers, time is on Labour's side.

Finance Minister Rachel Reeves's budget is seen as crucial to Starmer achieving his mission of firing Britain's sluggish economy, and ultimately fulfilling his promise of "a decade of national renewal".

"It's completely retrievable as long as they learn the lessons," said Fielding.

UK PM Keir Starmer's poll ratings drop as Labour government set to mark 100 days in office

The race for the next conservative party leader in the UK is down to two as Tory MPS eliminated James cleverly, in a result which left many conservatives shocked and the labor an liberal Democrats rivals delighted. Watch to know more details.

UK: Cleverly Suffers Shock Exit From Tory Party Leadership Race

Right-wing candidates Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick won through Wednesday to the final round of the contest to become leader of Britain's opposition Conservative Party -- seeking its sixth chief since the Brexit referendum of 2016.

The outspoken Badenoch received 42 votes from fellow Tory MPs while Jenrick picked up 41. Ex-foreign minister James Cleverly was surprisingly eliminated with 37 votes.

Conservative party members will now select the winner in a ballot that closes at the end of October, with the next leader announced on November 2.

The winner will have to reunite a fractious party, hurting from a brutal election defeat in July when it returned just 121 MPs -- the lowest number in its history. It also lost support to the hard-right Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ex-interior-minister-priti-patel-eliminated-from-uk-conservative-leadership-race-756081">Also read:&nbsp;Ex-interior minister Priti Patel eliminated from UK Conservative leadership race</a>

The Conservatives face a daunting rebuilding campaign to overturn Labour's 174-seat parliamentary majority at the next election, likely in five years.

But with British elections typically won from the centre, any lurch to the right could scupper that chance.

<h2>Badenoch&nbsp;</h2>

The British-Nigerian Badenoch is a right-wing firebrand, unafraid to speak her mind and not shy of picking a battle in the culture wars.

Badenoch, 44, has been an MP since 2017, representing an area in the southeastern English county of Essex.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Badenoch spent much of her childhood in Lagos before returning to the UK aged 16.

She worked in IT and banking before launching into politics, rising to become a business minister in Rishi Sunak's government.

A self-described "sceptic" of net-zero carbon emissions, Badenoch is popular amongst Tory members who tend to be further right than many lawmakers.

But with British elections typically won from the centre, any lurch to the right could scupper that chance. Badenoch The British-Nigerian Badenoch is a right-wing firebrand, unafraid to speak her mind and not shy of picking a battle in the culture wars.
