Zelensky pushes to repair US-Ukraine ties after Trump clash

As US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in the White House, they were seen locked in a series of tense exchanges. Trump stressed that he is not aligned with anybody, adding that he is aligned with the good of the world. The meeting turned into a raging fight of word as Trump and US Vice President JD Vance teamed up against Zelensky. Watch in for more details!

Top 10 world news: EU Summit on Ukraine underway in UK; Gaza ceasefire updates, and more

Denmark's defence committee's chair on Sunday (March 1) said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would "run naked through New York City" if that will get him security guarantees and save his country.
Rasmus Jarlov, chair of the Danish parliament Folketing&rsquo;s defence committee, stressed in an interview to Sky News how Ukraine and Europe can get back into talks with US President Donald Trump.
"I&rsquo;m pretty sure that President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/zelensky" rel="dofollow">Zelensky</a> would be willing to run naked through New York City if that was required of him to get security, security guarantees and save his country," Jarlov said.

He stressed that it cannot be about emotions and personal egos.&nbsp;
"It is about who's humble enough and who said thank you enough. It must be about what is right and just and what is in the interest of the Western world," he said.&nbsp;
<h2>'US has been misled'</h2>
Denmark defence committee's chair further said that the US administration &ldquo;has been misled by a false narrative that Zelensky is a bad guy who is trying to exploit the US and that Europe are bad guys &hellip; and they want to show they are fed up with that.&rdquo;
He warned that any peace deal without security guarantees for Ukraine is not even worth the value of the paper that it's written on as &ldquo;Russian leaders regularly break their promises, break their treaties, break agreements.&rdquo;

"It seems that Russia already thinks that they&rsquo;re at war with the West... If you think that way, then you&rsquo;re going to attack again. And they will attack the Baltic countries, probably as the first target," he stressed.
<h2>EU countries 'not doing their part'</h2>
Jarlov called out some EU countries for not paying enough in their defence spending for Ukraine and "not doing their part".&nbsp;
"There is no comparison between the economies of Europe and Russia. It&rsquo;s like 15 times bigger. So if Europe stands up and helps Ukraine, there will only be one outcome, and that will be a Ukrainian victory," he said.
Jarlov added that if "we are hesitant like we have been so far", then the Americans are going to stop helping because they think it&rsquo;s too expensive, and then Ukraine will lose, and that "will be a very, very bad outcome for Europe."
Currently, the European leaders are holding a crucial defence summit in London, hosted by UK PM Keir Starmer.
Jarlov stressed that the EU leaders have to "stop talking, stop tweeting" and have to "start paying and they have to send the arms to Ukraine right now."

‘Once in a generation moment for security’: PM Starmer opens Ukraine defence summit in London

The Ukraine war intensifies as Russia claims to have captured two more settlements in Donetsk while advancing on multiple fronts. Ukraine reports repelling Russian attacks in several regions, including Kharkiv and Kherson. Meanwhile, Moscow accuses Kyiv of damaging the TurkStream pipeline, escalating tensions further. As diplomatic efforts continue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has spoken to his Turkish counterpart, warning of a strong response to Ukraine.

Russia-Ukraine war: Fierce battles rage across Ukraine as Russia claims gains

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Sunday (March 2) that he does not "trust" Russian President Vladimir Putin, stressing that a ceasefire without a security guarantee would be dangerous and "he would come again" if given the chance.&nbsp;
Hence the critical need for &ldquo;security guarantees&rdquo;, the UK prime minister said. Starmer has been insisting that without a security guarantee, the Russian president could attack Ukraine again and the situation could blow up into a wider war.
On the other hand, he said that he trusts Zelensky and Trump. When asked if Zelensky had done anything wrong, Starmer said, "he didn't", adding that the Ukrainian president has bravely served his country as a wartime leader since Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion was launched in February 2022.&nbsp;

<h2>'Felt uncomfortable'</h2>
Starmer said that he felt "uncomfortable" watching the argument between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.&nbsp;

World: Starmer said that he felt "uncomfortable" watching the argument between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Sunday (March 2) that he does not "trust" Russian President Vladimir Putin, stressing that a ceasefire without a security guarantee would be dangerous and "he would come again" if given the chance. Hence the critical need for “security guarantees”, the UK prime minister said. Starmer has been insisting that without a security guarantee, the Russian president could attack Ukraine again and the situation could blow up into a wider war. On the other hand, he said that he trusts Zelensky and Trump. When asked if Zelensky had done anything wrong, Starmer said, "he didn't", adding that the Ukrainian president has bravely served his country as a wartime leader since Russia’s full-scale invasion was launched in February 2022. With Zelensky but not against Trump: EU, NATO stress Ukraine's need to 'restore' relations with US

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday (Feb 28) engaged in what could be defined as a history-making moment in the relations between both countries.
But Trump's hostility towards Zelensky and Ukraine is not a newfound issue and can be traced back to his first term in the White House.
In 2019, Trump faced impeachment over allegations that he withheld nearly $400 million in US security aid to Ukraine in an attempt to pressure Kyiv into investigating Joe Biden, then the former vice president, and his son, Hunter Biden, ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump claimed that Biden had influenced Ukraine to fire a prosecutor who was investigating Burisma, an energy company where Hunter Biden sat on the board. However, no concrete evidence of wrongdoing by either Biden ever surfaced.
A transcript of a phone call between Trump and Zelensky, dated 25 July 2019, revealed that Trump had urged the Ukrainian leader to work with his personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, and US Attorney General William Barr on the matter.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot of talk about Biden&rsquo;s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it &hellip; It sounds horrible to me,&rdquo; Trump stated, according to the document.

Beyond the Bidens, Trump also wanted Ukraine to investigate whether it had played a role in hacking the Democratic National Committee in 2016, a claim that contradicted US intelligence findings, which pointed to Russian involvement.
For Zelensky, the situation was complicated. Ukraine depended heavily on American military aid, and any delay or withdrawal of support could have had serious consequences. During the call, Zelensky appeared to comply with Trump&rsquo;s request.
&ldquo;Since we have won the absolute majority in our Parliament, the next prosecutor general will be 100% my person, my candidate,&rdquo; Zelensky said.

He continued, &ldquo;He or she will look into the situation specifically to the company that you mentioned in this issue. The issue of the investigation of the case is actually the issue of making sure to restore the honesty so we will take care of that and will work on the investigation of the case.&rdquo;
However, just days before Zelensky was expected to announce the investigation on CNN, a political firestorm erupted in Washington over the Trump administration&rsquo;s threat to withhold aid. The decision to freeze the funds was swiftly reversed, the money was sent, and Zelensky ultimately cancelled the interview, according to The New York Times.
Trump repeatedly denied pressuring Zelensky, insisting, &ldquo;there was no quid pro quo.&rdquo; Yet, multiple US officials later testified that they had been informed the aid would only be released if Ukraine launched an investigation into the Bidens.

Gordon Sondland, the then-US ambassador to the European Union, stated that the push for an inquiry into the Bidens came at Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;express direction.&rdquo; He also testified that an invitation for Zelensky to visit the White House had been tied to the launch of the investigation.
Two weeks after Trump approved the aid, the two leaders appeared together at a press conference during the United Nations General Assembly. When asked whether he had been pressured, Zelensky gave a diplomatic response that may not have entirely reassured Trump.
&ldquo;We had, I think, a good phone call &hellip; It was normal. We spoke about many things. I think you read that nobody pushed me,&rdquo; Zelensky stated.
Trump, standing beside him, added, &ldquo;In other words, no pressure.&rdquo;
During the impeachment hearings, Kurt Volker, who served as US special envoy to Ukraine, testified that Trump had described Ukraine as &ldquo;a corrupt country, full of terrible people.&rdquo;
Though the US Senate acquitted Trump in 2020, the ordeal left a lasting impact as it happened just months before his failed re-election bid. Many believe the controversy may have influenced some undecided voters.

Trump tried to use Zelensky against Biden but it backfired - What fueled his anger towards 'terrible' Ukraine

Tensions ran high as US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in a heated exchange in the Oval Office. Meanwhile, a joint press conference was abruptly canceled, and key deals, including a minerals agreement, were left unsigned. With Trump insisting on compromises and Zelensky refusing to back down against Putin, this diplomatic showdown marks a pivotal moment in US-Ukraine relations.

'Trump is on our side', Zelensky affirms; Trump says Ukraine will have to 'compromise' in Russia truce

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United States on Thursday night (27 February) for discussions with US President Donald Trump. The key focus of their meeting is a significant mineral agreement between the two nations, which has been widely anticipated.
<h2>What does the deal involve?</h2>
News outlet The Kyiv Independent obtained the full text of the agreement through a&nbsp;source within the Ukrainian government.

Here's the key excerpts of the deal:
Ukraine and the United States formalised the deal on 25 February. However, reports suggest that Washington had initially put forward three proposals, two of which Kyiv rejected due to the absence of security provisions.
Speaking to journalists on 26 February, Zelensky stated that the agreement was "well appreciated by our government officials." However, he acknowledged that it does not yet include specific security guarantees for Ukraine.
"The important thing is that the agreement mentions 'partners,' and this fund is Ukrainian-American, not American," he said.

This initial agreement is expected to be followed by a Fund Agreement, which will further outline the workings of the Reconstruction Investment Fund established by both countries. For this to take effect, Ukraine&rsquo;s parliament will need to ratify it.
The document, titled "Bilateral Agreement Establishing Terms and Conditions for a Reconstruction Investment Fund," stresses the continued support of the US for Ukraine following Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
It underscores the partnership between the two nations in rebuilding Ukraine while ensuring that entities or individuals hostile to Ukraine do not benefit from reconstruction efforts.

Revenue contribution &ndash; Ukraine will contribute 50% of revenues from future monetisation of its natural resource assets, which include minerals, oil, natural gas, and infrastructure like LNG terminals and ports. Existing revenue sources that form part of Ukraine&rsquo;s national budget are excluded.
Reinvestment in Ukraine &ndash; Funds collected will be reinvested annually into Ukraine&rsquo;s security, stability, and prosperity. The terms of these investments will be clarified in the Fund Agreement.
Long-term US Commitment &ndash; The agreement outlines Washington&rsquo;s long-term financial support for Ukraine&rsquo;s development. Contributions may include funds, financial instruments, and other assets vital for reconstruction.
Investment strategy &ndash; The fund will attract investments to enhance Ukraine&rsquo;s natural resource sector, infrastructure, and state-owned enterprises, ensuring sustainable economic growth.
Security measures &ndash; Provisions will be included to prevent any attempts to bypass sanctions or restrictive measures.
Legal and structural considerations &ndash; The agreement will align with Ukraine&rsquo;s commitments to the European Union, international financial institutions, and official creditors.

'Stake in Ukraine's minerals, 50% revenue': What does Ukraine-US mineral deal entail?

Ukraine's President Zelensky heads to Washington amidst battlefield losses and diplomatic uncertainty. The mineral rights agreement promises American access to rare earth minerals, but security guarantees for Kyiv remain conspicuously absent. So, is this a lifeline, or is this some kind of last-ditch losing gamble for Zelensky?

Russia-Ukraine war: Zelensky stresses 'security guarantees' ahead of US visit

Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump have confirmed that the former will visit the White House on Friday (Feb 28) to sign the minerals deal.&nbsp;
Trump is demanding to strike a deal with Ukraine to give access to its rare earth minerals as compensation for receiving aid of billions of dollars from the US under the presidency of former president Joe Biden amid war.
Zelensky said that revenues generated under the resources deal would be deposited in a fund shared by Ukraine and the US. He added that Kyiv would not be &ldquo;a debtor&rdquo; over war aid provided to his country under the Biden administration.
Ukraine also said it wants security guarantees. However, the US president said that he will not be making &ldquo;security guarantees to Ukraine beyond very much,&rdquo; suggesting European nations take that responsibility because of geographical proximity.
<h2>What does the deal include?</h2>
The draft agreement seeks the establishment of a &ldquo;reconstruction investment fund&rdquo; that will be managed by both the US and Ukrainian governments.
According to the deal, Kyiv would contribute 50 per cent of the revenues from the future state-owned natural resources projects into the fund, and the money will be reinvested in other developments.
The deal will exclude existing &ldquo;deposits, facilities, licenses and royalties&rdquo; related to Ukraine&rsquo;s natural resources, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said.
&ldquo;We are only talking about future licenses, developments, and infrastructure,&rdquo; he said.
The draft agreement not only includes minerals and rare earths but also covers Ukraine&rsquo;s other natural resources, including oil and gas. It will also include other infrastructure linked to those sectors, like ports or LNG terminals.

Zelensky to sign Trump’s mineral deal. What we know so far

After dismissing security guarantees for Ukraine in exchange for a mineral deal, Trump has been noncommittal about defending Taiwan against a potential Chinese invasion. When pressed by a reporter about Taiwan on Wednesday, he responded, “I never comment on that... I don’t want to ever put myself in that position.” It seems that after NATO and Ukraine, U.S. under Trump is now abandoning Taiwan as well. Where does it leave the two countries?

Donald Trump has made his stance pretty clear: Europe must defend itself. He has now launched a fresh attack on the EU, and this comes as European capitals feel ignored after Washington sidelined them and opened a direct line with their enemy number one at the moment, Moscow.

<h2>1. 'Will get our money back'</h2>
The US president added that the deal would allow the US to "get our money back". "And we're going to get a lot of money in the future, and I think that's appropriate because we have taxpayers that shouldn't be footing the bill," he says. "It's all been worked out."

The billionaire then praised Trump's cabinet, saying, "It is the best cabinet ever, literally."
