According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Moscow's troops have reclaimed two more settlements from Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region. Russia's advances on the battlefield have continued even as the U.S. pushes ahead with a way to end the war. On Wednesday, Trump also said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will likely visit the White House on Friday to sign a rare earth mineral deal to pay for US military aid to defend against Russian aggression. Russia-Ukraine war: Heavy fighting in Kursk & Pokrovsk as both sides prepare for peace talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday (Feb 26) that he hoped to visit Washington on Friday to meet President Donald Trump and discuss striking a minerals deal with the United States.
Trump is demanding to strike a deal with Ukraine to give access to its rare earth minerals as compensation for receiving aid of billions of dollars from the US under the presidency of former president Joe Biden amid war.
A senior Ukrainian official told AFP on Tuesday (Feb 25) that Kyiv agreed on the terms of the deal with the US to jointly develop the mineral resources of the country. According to the official, Zelensky could sign the agreement as early as Friday (Feb 28) in Washington.
“I would like to have this visit very much,” Zelensky told reporters on Wednesday (Feb 26).
“This is just a start, a framework, it can be a big success. The success will depend on our conversation with President Trump,” the Ukrainian president added.

Kyiv would not be ‘a debtor’

Zelensky said that revenues generated under the resources deal would be deposited in a fund shared by Ukraine and the US. He added that Kyiv would not be “a debtor” over war aid provided to his country under the Biden administration.
“This would be unfair to us,” Zelensky said.
He also expressed that he would ask Trump whether Washington would stop the aid and whether Ukraine could still purchase weapons from the US.
Kyiv hopes the deal will improve relations between the two nations, which have recently become sour amid the war of the world between the two presidents.
Ukraine also said it wants security guarantees, although the current proposal of the deal does not include any specific security commitments to the United States, according to a senior Ukrainian official, reported AFP.

'It can be a big success': Zelensky hopes to meet Trump in US this Friday

On the table, Ukraine is set to sign a deal with the United States for handing over its rare earth minerals, critical for aerospace and defense. Just a short while ago, President Zelensky rejected the offer, refusing to sell the rare minerals of his country. Now, under mounting pressure from Donald Trump, he has relented. But what does Ukraine truly gain?

US-Ukraine minerals deal: Will Ukraine's costly trade-off pay off?

As we track the last three years of the Russia-Ukraine war, we deep dive into the economic toll on both nations. Who's struggling, who's adapting, and what does the future hold for investment and recovery? Sanctions have restricted trade, but alternative markets, particularly in Asia, have enabled Russia to sustain revenues from oil, gas, and metals.

Ukraine's $524 bn reconstruction bill: energy infrastructure, housing key focus of recovery

The Kremlin has contradicted Donald Trump's claim that Vladimir Putin is open to European peacekeeping troops in Ukraine. The latest statement underscores Moscow's reluctance to align with Donald Trump's efforts to end the war quickly.

Ukraine war: Russia to reject European troops in Ukraine?

Ukraine's infrastructure has been on the frontlines since Russia's invasion began in 2022. 3 years later, a joint assessment by Ukraine, the World Bank, the European Commission, and the UN, reveals that Ukraine needs $524 billion dollars over the next decade to rebuild. This figure is 2.8 times Ukraine's estimated 2024 GDP. Interestingly, this figure is also what US President Donald Trump aims to extract from Ukraine in the form of critical minerals to continue military aid.

Ukraine's cost of recovery

The latest assessment, which covers damage from February 2022 to December 2024, shows a sharp rise from the $486 billion dollar estimate released in early 2024. The report highlights the scale of destruction across key sectors.
The war has destroyed 13 per cent of Ukraine's housing stock, affecting over 2.5 million households. Frontline regions in the East, North, and South account for 75 per cent of the total destruction. Energy infrastructure has been a primary target, with Russian strikes on the power grid causing widespread blackouts. Despite Ukraine's recovery plans focusing on restoring energy systems and housing, the escalating damage presents major hurdles.
This comes as Trump engages with Russia regarding peace restoration in the region. The 'Peace talks' have raised concerns over no Ukrainian participation. Meanwhile, Ukraine's critical minerals are at the centre of Trump-Zelensky negotiations. Trump has asked for strategic access to Ukraine's critical minerals worth $500 billion in exchange for continued military aid. While Zelensky dismissed the offer earlier, saying that such a deal could burden Ukrainians for generations, the latest reports suggest that Ukraine and the US have agreed terms on a minerals deal.
However, the burden is growing on Ukraine to start rebuilding after 3 years of destruction.

Ukraine's $524 billion restructuring bill: How long before Ukraine can 'stand up on its feet'?

The US and Ukraine have agreed on key terms for a minerals deal, a move that could reshape global resource supply chains. Reports suggest the agreement may include security guarantees, while officials confirm that a clause deemed unfavorable to the US was removed. Meanwhile, the UK Prime Minister heads to the US to bridge gaps over Ukraine policy. Will this deal strengthen Ukraine’s position or deepen geopolitical tensions?
