Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Russia is plotting a potentially dangerous attack on Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which Russian forces have occupied for more than a year.

Canada, Sweden, Ukraine and Britain on Wednesday, took Iran to the International Court of Justice in order to seek damages for families of passengers on a plane that was shot down by Tehran in the year 2020, said the tribunal.

The incident had claimed the lives of all 176 people aboard the Ukrainian jetliner downed by Iran.

As per the case at the United Nation's top court, Iran "violated a series of obligations" under a convention on civil aviation by shooting down Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 after take-off from Tehran.

On January 8, 2020, Iran admitted that its military had targeted the Kyiv-bound Boeing 737-800 plane calling it a "disastrous mistake".

In their application to the court, the four countries said Iran had breached "a series of obligations" against the Montreal Convention, targeted at safeguarding the security of civilian air travel.

They said that Iran did not take all possible measures to avert the downing of Flight PS752 and also failed to conduct an impartial, transparent and fair criminal probe and prosecution.

They asked the court to "order full reparation for all injury caused" and to make Iran pay "full compensation to the applicants for the material and moral damages suffered by the victims and their families".

Iran should also return the belongings of the victims and publicly acknowledge its "internationally wrongful acts".

The majority of the victims of the incident who lost their lives were from the four countries, which created a coordination group aiming to hold Iran to account.

Iran, in a statement, had said that its forces accidentally shot down the Boeing 737 jet during the time when the tensions between Tehran and Washington were heightened.

A final report issued in the year 2021, held a misaligned radar and an error by an air defence operator responsible for the tragic incident.

Canada at the time said the report made "no attempt to answer critical questions about what truly happened".

Ukraine: At least 38 people, including 12 children injured after Russian missile strike in Kharkiv

The Russian foreign ministry said on Tuesday (July 4) that Russia sees no basis for renewing Black Sea grain deal. The statement has come less than two weeks before the grain deal agreement expires. The agreement has allowed Ukraine to ship grain out of its Black Sea ports despite the ongoing war.

In its statement, the ministry has said that Russia was doing everything in order to facilitate departure of all ships covered by the deal from the Black Sea.

The grain deal expires on July 17.

Russia has, for long threatened to pull out of the agreement. It has been complaining that promises to remove barriers to its own exports of grain and fertiliser have not been fulfilled.

In mid-May, Russia agreed to renew the deal for two months. But after that, it has repeatedly said that it sees no basis to extend the deal again.

In its statement, the foreign ministry said the Black Sea initiative had delivered Ukrainian grain to "well-fed" countries but failed to help those that needed it most in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The ministry said that the five poorest countries - Ethiopia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Sudan and Somalia - received only 2.6 per cent of the grain shipped while the situation pertaining to the Russian grain and fertiliser exports "continued to worsen"

"Under these conditions, it is obvious that there are no grounds for further continuation of the 'Black Sea Initiative', which expires on July 17," the statement said.

Due to its massive grain output, Ukraine is often referred to as the 'bread basket' of the world. The Russian invasion of Ukraine made it difficult for grain shipments to traverse the Black Sea. This had raised the spectre of a global food crisis.

A grain deal was then struck which ensured safe passage for grain shipments. The initial deal was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey.

Russia claims that it has seen no progress on its demands including for its state agricultural bank to be reconnected to the international payments system SWIFT.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that a reported EU proposal to create a subsidiary of the bank was 'unworkable'. The proposal suggests that the subsidiary could be admitted to SWIFT.

'No grounds' to renew Ukraine grain deal, says Russia

Kyiv on Tuesday asked Georgia's ambassador to temporarily leave the country, condemning Tbilisi for mistreating imprisoned former leader and Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday urged the Georgian ambassador to Kyiv to return home and make efforts to save Georgia's jailed former president Mikheil Saakashvili.

Saakashvili, who was the leader of Georgia from 2004 to 2013, was imprisoned in the year 2021 after coming back from banishment on abuse of power charges that rights groups condemn as politically motivated.

"Right now, Russia is killing Ukrainian citizen Mykhailo Saakashvili at the hands of the Georgian authorities. We have repeatedly called on the official Tbilisi to stop this abuse and agree on Saakashvili's return to Ukraine. Our partners, in coordination with Ukraine, have also offered various rescue options," Zelensky said on Twitter.

"Today, I instructed the ministry of foreign affairs to summon the Georgian ambassador to Ukraine, to express our strong protest and to ask him to leave Ukraine within 48 hours to hold consultations with his capital," the tweet read.

He then called on the Georgian authorities to hand over Saakashvili to Ukraine for his necessary treatment.

"Once again, I call on the Georgian authorities to hand over Ukrainian citizen Mykhailo Saakashvili to Ukraine for the necessary treatment and care. Ukraine accuses Georgia of 'torturing' jailed ex-president Saakashvili, tells Georgian ambassador to go home

Ukraine's army has made modest progress in the south and Russian forces have advanced in Donbas region, the industrial heartland of the war-ravaged nation. The war's frontline is frozen, and a month after the launch of Kyiv's much-heralded counter-offensive, neither side seems able to force a decisive breakthrough. Ukrainian forces over the past week recaptured nine square kilometres in the east. The country's deputy defence minister says Ukrainian forces also captured 28 square kilometres in the south. It is a far cry from Kyiv's lightning successes seizing 9,000 square kilometres in just nine days east of Kharkiv at the start of last September. It was followed by 5,000 square kilometres more in November, in the Kherson region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday demanded his nation receive an official invitation to join NATO after the war is over ahead of a key alliance meet slated to be held in Lithuania.

While speaking alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Zelensky told the press, "We need a very clear and understandable signal at the Vilnius summit that Ukraine can become an equal member of NATO after the war.”

"This invitation to the alliance is the first, very practical step, it would be very important for us," he added.

If Ukraine were to join NATO, it would benefit from Article 5, which guarantees collective defence, meaning that member states must assist in the event of an attack.

NATO asked to clarify its stance

In light of these developments, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba also urged NATO to clarify its stance on Ukraine's membership bid.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted on Thursday, “Ukraine continues to work actively with all NATO allies to convince them that the time for clarity on Ukraine's membership in the Alliance has come." His remarks came shortly after he spoke with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg over the phone.

Key NATO summit to be held next month

The upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, scheduled for July 11-12, will be a significant event where Ukraine's membership is expected to be a key topic of discussion. President Zelensky has assured Western counterparts that Ukraine's full membership would strengthen NATO rather than weaken it. However, he acknowledged that Ukraine's entry into NATO would only occur once the conflict with Russia has been resolved.

NATO ‘split’ on Ukraine’s membership

There are differing views within NATO regarding Ukraine's membership. During a press conference in Brussels, Secretary General Stoltenberg acknowledged the division among member countries on this issue, highlighting that decisions within NATO are made through consensus. "On that issue, there are different views in the alliance and of course, the only way to make decisions in Nato is by consensus," Stoltenberg was quoted as saying by Indiatimes.

Some NATO diplomats have expressed concerns about the United States' hesitancy to extend its commitment to Ukraine beyond the initial membership pledge made 15 years ago.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday demanded his nation receive an official invitation to join NATO after the war is over ahead of a key alliance meet slated to be held in Lithuania.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday demanded his nation receive an official invitation to join NATO after the war is over ahead of a key alliance meet slated to be held in Lithuania. While speaking alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Zelensky told the press, "We need a very clear and understandable signal at the Vilnius summit that Ukraine can become an equal member of NATO after the war.” "This invitation to the alliance is the first, very practical step, it would be very important for us," he added. If Ukraine were to join NATO, it would benefit from Article 5, which guarantees collective defence, meaning that member states must assist in the event of an attack. NATO asked to clarify its stance In light of these developments, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba also urged NATO to clarify its stance on Ukraine's membership bid. Watch: Poland wants to join NATO's nuclear sharing programme × Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted on Thursday, “Ukraine continues to work actively with all NATO allies to convince them that the time for clarity on Ukraine's membership in the Alliance has come." His remarks came shortly after he spoke with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg over the phone. Key NATO summit to be held next month The upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, scheduled for July 11-12, will be a significant event where Ukraine's membership is expected to be a key topic of discussion. President Zelensky has assured Western counterparts that Ukraine's full membership would strengthen NATO rather than weaken it. However, he acknowledged that Ukraine's entry into NATO would only occur once the conflict with Russia has been resolved. NATO ‘split’ on Ukraine’s membership There are differing views within NATO regarding Ukraine's membership. US CIA Director William Burns said on Saturday that the armed mutiny by mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin was a challenge to the Russian state that had shown the corrosive effect of President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine.

British media reports citing officials in Ukraine, on Sunday (July 2) reported that eight Hurricane fighter planes dating back to World War Two from the United Kingdom were found in a forest near Kyiv. The National Aviation Museum of Ukraine began excavations after a World War II-era bomb was discovered near Kyiv which prompted the local authorities to check the entire ravine with metal detectors when they stumbled upon the remains of the aircraft.

About the discovery

The remnants of the aircraft were found near an unexploded bomb dating back to the same conflict, in the forest south of Kyiv which until 1991 was a part of the USSR. “It is very rare to find this aircraft in Ukraine,” said Oleks Shtan, a former airline pilot who is leading the excavation, as quoted by the BBC. He added, “It’s very important for our aviation history because no lend-lease aircraft have been found here before.”

The British Hurricane fighter jets were sent as part of a package of Allied military support for the USSR by Britain after the invasion by Nazi Germany in 1941, and paid for by the United States under the so-called lend-lease scheme. Notably, Washington is currently using similar legislation to send military aid to Kyiv amid its conflict with Moscow.

The discovery is said to be unique since Hawker Hurricanes are rarely found in Ukraine. According to historians, some of these aircraft were purposely broken and buried by the Soviets so that they did not have to pay back the US as a part of the legislation requiring the USSR to pay for donated military equipment that remained intact.

What is the Hawker Hurricane fighter jet?

“The Hurricane was a strong, easy to fly machine,” said Shtan, as quoted by the BBC. He added, “It was stable as a gun platform and suitable for inexperienced pilots. A reliable aircraft.” It is also reported that the rusty remains of the aircraft had been stripped of its valuable components like radios and machine guns as well as any useful scrap metal.

The Hawker Hurricane is said to be key in the Battle of Britain and shot down more than half of the enemy aircraft when Nazi Germany attempted to invade the UK. While its role was overshadowed by the Spitfire plane, Hurricane’s role was seen as significant in 1940.

As per British media reports, a total of 3,000 Hurricanes were sent to the USSR between 1941 and 1944 to support their war efforts. However, most of them were destroyed in combat or dismantled later for parts. The National Aviation Museum of Ukraine aims to reassemble the Hurricanes fighter jets found and put them on display.

“The Hurricanes are a symbol of British assistance during the years of the Second World War, just as we are very appreciative of British assistance nowadays,” said the head of research at the museum, Valerii Romanenko, as quoted by the BBC. He added, “The UK is one of the largest suppliers of military equipment to our country now.”

He also spoke about how even in 1941, Britain was the first one to supply fighter aircraft to the Soviet Union on a mass scale and currently the UK is the first country to provide Storm Shadow cruise missiles to the Ukrainian forces.

"Another enemy attack on Kyiv," said Serhiy Popko, a colonel general who heads Kyiv's military administration, in a post on the Telegram channel. "At this moment, there is no information about possible casualties or damage,” he added.

As reported by Reuters, blasts which resembled the sound of targets being hit by air defence systems, were heard by its correspondents. No immediate information was available about the scale of the attack. This comes a day after Ukrainian officials confirmed more civilian casualties due to shelling by Russia in the country’s eastern and southern regions.

In the Donetsk region's eastern front line, at least three civilians lost their lives and 17 others were wounded on Friday and Saturday overnight, stated Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported about the continuation of fierce clashes in three areas of Donetsk where it stated Russia has amassed troops and was trying to advance. The outskirts of three cities - Marinka, Lyman and Bakhmut – were named front-line hot spots.

In the southern Kherson region of Ukraine, five people, which included a child, suffered injuries on Friday as well as in overnight attacks, as stated by Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.

He stated that 82 artillery, drone, mortar shell and rocket attacks were launched by the Russian forces on the province, which has been divided into two by a stretch of the 1,500km (930 miles) front line and still faces flooding that occurred after Dnipro River dam's collapse.

Meanwhile, in the northwest of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with the top military command of the country and atomic energy officials at the Rivne nuclear power plant to discuss “the security of our northern regions and our measures to strengthen them”.

The trip of Zelensky to Rivne was a rare journey taken by the Ukrainian leader to a region which is comparatively far from the fighting.

However, it is near the border with Belarus, where Wagner mercenaries of Russia have a deal to go after their aborted uprising.

Earlier on Saturday, Zelensky also warned that a “serious threat” remained at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is occupied by Russia in Ukraine’s south and said Russia was “technically ready” to provoke a localised explosion at the facility.
