However, Erdogan also did not deny the possibility of accepting Sweden’s membership bid which he said would be further discussed with the Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, on Monday ahead of the upcoming summit.&nbsp;

We will make the best decision, whatever it is,” said Erdogan.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, NATO chief Stoltenberg, on Friday said there are still “gaps” to be bridged between Turkey and Sweden before the former can give its go ahead for the latter’s membership bid. Addressing a press conference ahead of next week’s summit, Stoltenberg said again he would meet Swedish and Turkish leaders a day before the gathering officially starts on July 11-12.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president who is in the midst of visiting several NATO states, drummed up support for its membership bid. Zelensky travelled to the Czech Republic and Slovakia a day after holding talks in Bulgaria. He is also due to visit Istanbul and meet his Turkish counterpart, later on Friday.&nbsp;

While he was in Slovakia, Zelensky on Friday called on NATO to resolve the issue of Sweden and Ukraine’s membership bid and said that the indecision is a “threat” to global security. “I think there is not enough unity on this,” said Zelensky, during a press conference. He added, “This is a threat to the strength of the alliance…is (also) very important for the security of the whole world.”&nbsp;

Kyiv is also expecting some “positive results or at least some steps towards the positive outcome” from the upcoming summit in Vilnius, said the Ukrainian president. Zelensky also said the “situation with the aggressor, with Russia depends on this,” as Moscow is “counting on the world to show weakness and disunity in the Alliance, and this cannot be allowed.”&nbsp;

Zelensky has won a pledge of support for Ukraine to join NATO “as soon as the war (with Russia) is over,” from the Czech Republic. Additionally, Slovakia said the question of Kyiv’s membership was “when,” not “if”.&nbsp;

This comes as Stoltenberg reiterated that Ukraine would become a member but the alliance remains divided over how fast should Kyiv’s inclusion happen while others are concerned about provoking Russia. While Zelensky has acknowledged that they cannot join the alliance while the war with Russia is still going on, Kyiv needs “a clear signal, some concrete things in the direction of an invitation,” said the Ukrainian president, on Thursday.&nbsp;

The United States has agreed to hand over cluster munitions to Ukraine, said the White House on Thursday, as human rights groups continued their calls for putting a stop to the use of the controversial weapons known to cause civilian casualties in large numbers.

<h2>What is a cluster munition?&nbsp;</h2>

Cluster munitions, which are also known as cluster bombs, are canisters that contain tens to hundreds of smaller bomblets, also called&nbsp;submunitions. The canisters can be launched using missiles, dropped from aircraft, or fired from naval guns, artillery, or rocket launchers.

At a prescribed height, the canisters break open depending upon the intended target, and the bomblets inside it spread out over that area. The bomblets fuse with a timer and explode closer to or on the ground and spread shrapnel that is designed to take out armoured vehicles such as tanks and kill troops.&nbsp;

<h2>How dangerous are these bombs?&nbsp;</h2>

The bomblets, which are designed in a way that they detonate when they hit the ground, have a high chance of killing or seriously injuring anyone in the area. Apart from the initial damage which the munitions cause upon impact, many bomblets do not detonate at all.&nbsp;

Around 40 per cent of bomblets have not exploded in some recent conflicts, as per the ICRC. Hence, these cluster bombs, like landmines, carry a grave risk to the lives of civilians, long after they are used in&nbsp;wartime. These unexploded bomblets can kill and maim civilians years after the munitions were used.

Hence, human rights groups have been opposing the use of cluster bombs by the army in populated areas, stating that it is a violation of international humanitarian law since the weapons can cause indiscriminate destruction. &nbsp;

As per a Reuters report, 60 per cent of casualties due to cluster bombs are people who get injured while undertaking everyday activities.&nbsp;

As happens in any strike, calling an action a war crime requires understanding if the target was legitimate and if the precautions were adopted to prevent any civilian casualties.

“The part of international law where this starts playing (a role), though, is indiscriminate attacks targeting civilians,” said Human Rights Watch’s associate arms director Mark Hiznay, while speaking to The Associated Press. “So that’s not necessarily related to the weapons, but the way the weapons are used," he added.&nbsp;

More than 120 countries joined a convention which banned the use of cluster bombs and agreed not to produce, use, stockpile or transfer the weapons and to clear them after they have been used. The convention has not been signed by Ukraine, Russia and the US.&nbsp;

<h2>Have cluster bombs been used before?&nbsp;</h2>

The cluster munitions were most notably used by Armenia and Azerbaijan last year amid their war over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Since 2012, Syria has continued using cluster munitions.&nbsp;

Human Rights Watch arms advocacy director Mary Wareham said that the use of cluster munitions in 2020 was extremely reduced compared to previous years. She stated that the treaty’s success was also seen in the destruction of stockpiles.

"We know that at least 1.5 million cluster munitions and more than 178 million submunitions have been destroyed from stocks," stated Wareham.&nbsp;

"That goes to show that this convention is truly lifesaving because every single one of those explosive submunitions could take a life or a limb," he added.&nbsp;

On Friday, Human Rights Watch in a statement said that both Russia and Ukraine have killed civilians with the use of cluster munitions in the ongoing war.

NBC News, quoting sources close to the discussions, reported that a high-level back-channel diplomacy—called Track Two diplomacy in diplomatic parlance— took place in April between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and senior former US officials in New York.

The former US officials who met Lavrov were Richard Haass, a former diplomat and the outgoing president of the Council on Foreign Relations, Europe expert Charles Kupchan and Russia expert Thomas Graham, both former White House and State Department officials.

In the April meeting, some of the thorniest issues were discussed like the fate of Russian-held territory that Ukraine may never be able to liberate, and the search for an elusive diplomatic solution that is acceptable to both sides, NBC News reported.

The discussions also pertained to keeping the channels of communication with Russia open where possible and to feel out where there might be room for future negotiation, compromise and diplomacy over ending the war.

The report says that the Biden administration was aware of the secret meeting, but added that it was not conducted at the behest of the US president.

The latest development comes days after CNN reported that CIA Director William Burns recently travelled to Ukraine and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian intelligence officials.

“Director Burns recently travelled to Ukraine, as he has done regularly since the beginning of Russia’s recent aggression more than a year ago,” a US official told CNN.

“As with other trips, the director met with his Ukrainian intelligence counterparts and President Zelensky, reaffirming the US commitment to sharing intelligence to help Ukraine defend against Russian aggression.”

Burns travelled to Kyiv before Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s attempted coup, which was reportedly not a topic of discussion.

Another official told CNN that Burns also spoke to his Russian counterpart, Sergey Naryshkin, after the rebellion and reiterated that the US had nothing to do with it. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the call.

Two law enforcement officers were wounded as they stormed the premises, Klymenko added.

The explosion took place at 5:20 p.m. (1420 GMT) in the toilet of the court, the Kyiv city military administration said.

Ihor Humenyuk, the suspect, was linked to the deaths of four Ukrainian national guardsmen in 2015 and was attending the court in that case.

Reportedly, following the hearing, Humenyuk barricaded himself inside a bathroom and threw an explosive device at two guards. Their prompt actions prevented him from escaping the building.

As law enforcement officers fired into the air to contain the situation, Humenyuk retreated into another room within the courthouse. Refusing to engage in negotiations with officials, he further resorted to violence by hurling another explosive device, injuring two officers in the process.

Unfortunately, the altercation ended with Humenyuk losing his life. An investigation is now underway to determine how he had come into possession of the explosives within the courtroom premises.

As per the case at the United Nation's top court, Iran "violated a series of obligations" under a convention on civil aviation by shooting down Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 after take-off from Tehran.

On January 8, 2020, Iran admitted that its military had targeted the Kyiv-bound Boeing 737-800 plane calling it a "disastrous mistake".

In their application to the court, the four countries said Iran had breached "a series of obligations" against the Montreal Convention, targeted at safeguarding the security of civilian air travel.

They said that Iran did not take all possible measures to avert the downing of Flight PS752 and also failed to conduct an impartial, transparent and fair criminal probe and prosecution.

They asked the court to "order full reparation for all injury caused" and to make Iran pay "full compensation to the applicants for the material and moral damages suffered by the victims and their families".

Iran should also return the belongings of the victims and publicly acknowledge its "internationally wrongful acts".

The majority of the victims of the incident who lost their lives were from the four countries, which created a coordination group aiming to hold Iran to account.

Iran, in a statement, had said that its forces accidentally shot down the Boeing 737 jet during the time when the tensions between Tehran and Washington were heightened.

A final report issued in the year 2021, held a misaligned radar and an error by an air defence operator responsible for the tragic incident.

Canada at the time said the report made "no attempt to answer critical questions about what truly happened".&nbsp;

The child’s condition was not immediately known.&nbsp;The strike also took place hours after Russian shelling, on Tuesday morning, killed a man and a woman in the Ukrainian city of Kherson, according to local prosecutors.&nbsp;

Additionally, cars damaged by the strike and flames were also seen nearby while a man sat in an ambulance with blood over his face, reported the news agency.&nbsp;

“I only remember that when the explosion sounded, we were thrown up into the air…I just can’t get a grip of myself, my legs are still shaking,” said a local resident, who only gave her name as Alla, according to Reuters.&nbsp;

The former commander of the Azov battalion, which is now a part of the Ukrainian army, Major Maksym Zhorin, said that the Russian strike targeted a military funeral of soldier Oleh Fadeenko. The Ukrainian soldier was said to have been killed in combat near Bakhmut.&nbsp;

Medvedev, on Tuesday, citing data from the Russian defence ministry, said more than 185,000 people were accepted into the military between January 1 to July 4, reported Reuters. This comes amid reports of Russia suffering heavy losses in Ukraine, which Moscow has not acknowledged. The claims by the former Russian president were made in a video posted on Telegram which also said that almost 10,000 new recruits had joined since the Wagner mutiny.&nbsp;

Ukraine: At least 38 people, including 12 children injured after Russian missile strike in Kharkiv

The Russian foreign ministry said on Tuesday (July 4) that Russia sees no basis for renewing Black Sea grain deal. The statement has come less than two weeks before the grain deal agreement expires. The agreement has allowed Ukraine to ship grain out of its Black Sea ports despite the ongoing war.

In its statement, the ministry has said that Russia was doing everything in order to facilitate departure of all ships covered by the deal from the Black Sea.

The grain deal expires on July 17.

Russia has, for long threatened to pull out of the agreement. It has been complaining that promises to remove barriers to its own exports of grain and fertiliser have not been fulfilled.

In mid-May, Russia agreed to renew the deal for two months. But after that, it has repeatedly said that it sees no basis to extend the deal again.

In its statement, the foreign ministry said the Black Sea initiative had delivered Ukrainian grain to "well-fed" countries but failed to help those that needed it most in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The ministry said that the five poorest countries - Ethiopia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Sudan and Somalia - received only 2.6 per cent of the grain shipped while the situation pertaining to the Russian grain and fertiliser exports "continued to worsen"

"Under these conditions, it is obvious that there are no grounds for further continuation of the 'Black Sea Initiative', which expires on July 17," the statement said.

'No grounds' to renew Ukraine grain deal, says Russia

Kyiv on Tuesday asked Georgia's ambassador to temporarily leave the country, condemning Tbilisi for mistreating imprisoned former leader and Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili.

Georgia's ruling party, which Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly accused of increasingly cooperating with Moscow, denounced Ukraine's decision calling it 'insulting'.

Ukraine on Tuesday condemned Georgia for 'torturing' jailed former leader Mikheil Saakashvili, a day after he looked extremely lean, skinny in a court hearing.

The foreign ministry announced in a statement that it had summoned the Georgian ambassador and said that Tbilisi's treatment of Saakashvili was "absolutely unacceptable."&nbsp;

"Such treatment of Mikheil Saakashvili is absolutely unacceptable. The Georgian authorities must stop torturing this citizen of Ukraine," the foreign ministry said.

Irakli Kobakhidze, the chairman of Georgia's ruling party, Georgian Dream, told journalists on Tuesday that the Ukrainian move was "insulting".

"But we wish to remain friends with Ukraine, even unilaterally, because the country is at war," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Saakashvili's TV footage sparks health concerns</h2>

Saakashvili for the first time in months appeared on television looking frail, lean with a hollow abdomen and his ribs sticking out from his chest sparking concerns over his treatment.

Doctors have released statements saying that the ex-leader of the Caucasus country is at risk of dying from conditions he has developed while in custody.

However, authorities in Georgia claim to provide adequate medical treatment to Saakashvili.

While appearing for a court hearing on the "abuse of office" charges, Saakashvili lifted his shirt and showed his ribs sticking out from his chest, a hollow abdomen and skin sticking tightly to his bones.&nbsp;

"A totally innocent man is being kept in custody," he said in coverage carried live on several independent TV channels. "I did not commit any crime."

"Putting me in jail will not break me. I am going to be actively involved in Georgian politics," he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday urged the Georgian ambassador to Kyiv to return home and make efforts to save Georgia's jailed former president Mikheil Saakashvili.

Saakashvili, who was the leader of Georgia from 2004 to 2013, was imprisoned in the year 2021 after coming back from banishment on abuse of power charges that rights groups condemn as politically motivated.

Zelensky made Saakashvili a Ukrainian citizen in the year 2019. He took to Twitter and accused Tbilisi of increasingly cooperating with Moscow.

"Right now, Russia is killing Ukrainian citizen Mykhailo Saakashvili at the hands of the Georgian authorities. We have repeatedly called on the official Tbilisi to stop this abuse and agree on Saakashvili's return to Ukraine. Our partners, in coordination with Ukraine, have also offered various rescue options," Zelensky said on Twitter.&nbsp;

"Today, I instructed the ministry of foreign affairs to summon the Georgian ambassador to Ukraine, to express our strong protest and to ask him to leave Ukraine within 48 hours to hold consultations with his capital," the tweet read.

He then called on the Georgian authorities to hand over Saakashvili to Ukraine for his necessary treatment.

"Once again, I call on the Georgian authorities to hand over Ukrainian citizen Mykhailo Saakashvili to Ukraine for the necessary treatment and care. And I urge our partners to address this situation and not ignore it and save this man. No government in Europe has the right to execute people, life is a basic European value," he further wrote.
