One killed, four injured after Russia carries out 'massive' overnight strike on Kyiv

Casting doubt over a proposal to supply Ukraine with retired fighter jets, Australia on Thursday said the matter was “complicated". Kyiv earlier requested dozens of retired F-18 fighter jets from Canberra, saying it would significantly boost its air power against the Russian forces.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles said the discussions around the F-18 fighter jets were “going on”, but added they were much more difficult than any other form of military support.

‘We need to be practical’

While Australia on Wednesday ramped up its support for Ukraine on the sidelines of the NATO summit which concluded in Lithuania, it stopped short of making any promise on fighter jets. Australia announced that it will send an additional fleet of 30 armoured Bushmaster infantry vehicles at a cost of US$67 million to the war-battered nation.

‘It’s complicated': Australia snubs Ukraine’s request for fighter jets

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has failed in a last-ditch effort to secure an invitation for Ukraine to join the NATO alliance the leaders of the 31 members.

Zelensky accuses NATO of 'showing disrespect'

President Joe Biden accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of having a "craven lust for land and power" at the end of a NATO summit on Wednesday where Ukraine won new security assurances from the US and its allies for its defence against Moscow.

Members of the world's most powerful military bloc offered the prospect of long-term protection a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky decried as "absurd" a refusal to offer an invitation or timetable for Ukraine's entry into NATO.

Ukraine has been pushing for rapid membership while fighting a Russian invasion unleashed in February 2022 that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.

Instead, a declaration by the G7 group of the world's most industrialised countries launched a framework for bilateral negotiations to provide military and financial support, intelligence sharing and a promise of immediate steps if Russia should attack again.

NATO allies offer Ukraine security assurances as Biden hits out at 'craven' Putin

During a news conference on Monday, the US State Department declared that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine had been a "strategic failure" for the latter, causing many to speculate as to whether the statement was a mistake or just the reality. Matthew Miller, the spokesperson, made the error, and the reporters in the briefing room promptly called him out on it.

US State depart spokesman says war has been 'strategic failure' for Ukraine in back-to-back blunders

Deputy commander of Russia's military operations in Ukraine, General Sergei Surovikin, who has not been seen in public since the mutiny by mercenary group Wagner, is currently 'resting', said a lawmaker from the ruling party on Wednesday.

As per Reuters reports, Andrei Kartapolov, head of the State Duma Defence Committee, is heard saying in a video posted on social media: "Surovikin is currently resting. (He is) not available for now."

Surovikin, who is also called 'General Armageddon' by the Russian press for his assertive strategies in the Syria conflict, was last seen publicly when he issued an appeal via a video urging the mercenary group to halt the mutiny while it was underway.

As per reports, Surovikin had good relations with Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who appreciated the general while regularly criticising Moscow's military leadership, especially Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, over their handling of the war in Ukraine.

As per a New York Times report based on a U.S. intelligence briefing, Surovikin had prior knowledge of the rebellion and that Russian authorities were probing if he was associated with it or not.

According to the news agency Reuters, Russian and international media, last month, reported that Surovikin had been arrested, but there has been no official confirmation of that, and the Kremlin has declined to answer questions about him.

Putin met Wagner chief five days after failed coup attempt: Kremlin

Russian President Vladimir Putin met the Wagner mercenary group’s chief Yevgeny Prigozhin five days after the failed coup attempt, the Kremlin said on Monday.

Briefing the reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the meeting took place on June 29, in which 35 people were invited, including unit commanders. He further said that the meeting lasted three hours.

Putin “gave his assessment of the events of June 24,” Peskov said, referring to the date of the Wagner Group’s failed uprising. He added that Putin also "listened to accounts given by (Wagner) commanders".

The Wagner commanders told Putin they were his soldiers and would continue to fight for him.

The development comes following speculations that Prigozhin wasn't exiled to Belarus at all as part of the peace deal brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Last week, Lukashenko told reporters that it was unclear if the Wagner fighters would come to Belarus after he previously offered them a desert military base.

“As for Prigozhin, he's in St Petersburg. He is not on the territory of Belarus," he said.

Responding to Lukashenko's remarks, the Kremlin said it was "not following" Prigozhin's movements.

"No, we do not follow his movements, we have neither the ability nor the desire to do so," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Deputy commander of Russia's military operations in Ukraine, General Sergei Surovikin, who has not been seen in public since the mutiny by mercenary group Wagner, is currently 'resting', said a lawmaker from the ruling party on Wednesday.

(He is) not available for now." Surovikin, who is also called 'General Armageddon' by the Russian press for his assertive strategies in the Syria conflict, was last seen publicly when he issued an appeal via a video urging the mercenary group to halt the mutiny while it was underway. Also read: West to offer long-term security commitments to Ukraine after slow progress on its NATO induction Putin met Wagner chief five days after failed coup attempt: Kremlin Russian President Vladimir Putin met the Wagner mercenary group’s chief Yevgeny Prigozhin five days after the failed coup attempt, the Kremlin said on Monday.
What do we know about the Russian official’s death?

The 42-year-old military official was shot in the southern city of Krasnodar, said Russia’s top investigative body. A criminal case has been launched after the alleged murder, reported TASS.

According to Russian media reports, Rzhitsky was the deputy head of military mobilisation in the city and also commanded the “Krasnodar” submarine (named after the city) in the Black Sea. Rzhitsky was reportedly shot four times in the back and chest and died on the spot.

The commander of a diesel-electric submarine, a part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, was also allegedly responsible for launching Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukrainian targets, according to media reports from Ukraine.

Rzhitsky, was also said to have been involved in a submarine-launched missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia in July, last year, which killed 23 civilians, including a four-year-old girl.

Ukrainian involvement?

A report by Reuters said that Rzhitsky’s details, including his address were present on the Ukrainian website Myrotvorets (Peacemaker), which is said to be an unofficial database of perceived enemies of Kyiv. On Tuesday, the word “Liquidated,” in red, was superimposed on his photograph on the site.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian interior ministry adviser, Anton Gerashchenko, took to Twitter and wrote about how the Russian police and the country’s media are blaming the “carefully planned” alleged murder on the “order from Ukraine”.

He added, “So far, Russian police cannot find a single surveillance camera that would show the crime being committed. The search continues.” However, the Ukrainian official did not covertly indicate if the allegations are justified or not.

Did Putin fire the top Russian general?

Top Russian general, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov was shown in a video released by the defence ministry, on Monday, in his first public appearance since the aborted Wagner mutiny last month.

He was also described as the general staff of the Russian armed forces and commander of Moscow’s forces in Ukraine, positions he held prior to the Wagner mutiny.

The recent footage and first public appearances indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin has retained his two most powerful military men Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Gerasimov.

Russian military bloggers, for weeks, have claimed that the top Russian general had been dismissed and replaced by Putin after Wagner’s June 24 mutiny. However, both the first recent public appearances suggest that the Russian president ignored Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s demand for their dismissal.

On the other hand, Russian military bloggers, as per the Moscow Times claim that Gerasimov has been replaced with Colonel General Mikhail Teplinskiy who took over as commander of the Airborne Forces in June, last year and in April became deputy commander of the grouping in Ukraine.

The pro-Kremlin military blogger Vladimir Romanov reportedly also indicated that Teplinsky is the one running operations on the Russian side.

Russian military official, on Ukraine’s ‘blacklist’ of alleged war criminals, shot dead mysteriously

A contingent of military vehicles diverted East on a highway in the direction of a fortified Russian Army base that holds nuclear weapons is a big development which is reported. In a shocking revelation, Ukraine's head of military intelligence said that the Wagner fighter had reached the Ukraine base.

Will Wagner's fighting skills make Putin reverse his decision?

NATO divided on cluster bombs, Ukraine's NATO membership

The West hasn't given a concrete answer on Ukraine's NATO bid yet, or about providing aid to the war-torn country. France announces to send Scalp long-range missiles to Ukraine. UK also supplied similar weapons under the name 'storm shadow'.

NATO allies will send clear and positive message to Ukraine : NATO Chief

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday hit out at the NATO leaders saying that there was "no
readiness" within the alliance, "neither to invite Kyiv to NATO nor to make it a member of the Alliance".

He took to Twitter and said, "We value our allies. We value our shared security. And we always appreciate an open conversation. Ukraine will be represented at the NATO summit in Vilnius. Because it is about respect. But Ukraine also deserves respect. Now, on the way to Vilnius, we received signals that certain wording is being discussed without Ukraine," he said.

"And I would like to emphasize that this wording is about the invitation to become NATO member, not about Ukraine's membership. It’s unprecedented and absurd when time frame is not set neither for the invitation nor for Ukraine's membership. While at the same time vague wording about 'conditions' is added even for inviting Ukraine. It seems there is no readiness neither to invite Ukraine to NATO nor to make it a member of the Alliance This means that a window of opportunity is being left to bargain Ukraine's membership in NATO in negotiations with Russia. And for Russia, this means motivation to continue its terror. Uncertainty is weakness. And I will openly discuss this at the summit," he further added.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says alliance to send "positive message" to Ukraine

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, on Tuesday, at the meeting with allied leaders at the summit in Vilnius said that the allies will send Ukraine "a clear and positive message on the path forward towards membership".

"We will send a clear message, a positive message on the path forward. The text in the communique will be made public within hours," Stoltenberg said at the start of the two-day meeting.

"Some allies are also then having a bilateral or multilateral dialogue with Ukraine on a framework to have in place to ensure continued support for Ukraine. I think it would be wrong if I go into the exact language of that and also exactly how that will be made public. But of course, this will complement and supplement the decisions made at the NATO summit," he added.

Zelensky then released a statement saying it would be "absurd" if NATO leaders gathering for a summit on Tuesday did not offer his country a timeframe for membership.
