<h2><strong>Ukraine's repeated appeals for more defence systems</strong></h2>

<p>Head of Ukraine's presidential office Andriy Yermak repeated the call of Kyiv for more defence systems and missiles after the attack on Odesa.<br />

"The enemy must be deprived of the ability to hit civilians and infrastructure. More missile defence systems, as well as ATACMS - this will help Ukraine," he stated on Telegram while speaking about the long-range tactical missiles which Kyiv has been appealing to Washington to supply.<br />

Since the start of the invasion, Odesa has been bombed multiple times and the city's historic centre was designated as a World Heritage in Danger site by the United Nations Cultural Agency (UNESCO) in January.</p>

<p>The alleged attack took place at 12:10 pm (local time) when the DW team came under Russian artillery fire while filming at a Ukrainian army training ground near Druzhkivka, said the German broadcaster, in a statement.&nbsp;<br />

<p>On Monday, two civilians were killed and a part of the road bridge was out of service after explosions took place on the Crimea bridge. The bridge had recently got back into full operation after it was damaged severely in a similar attack in October.<br />

The attack that took place on Monday was welcomed by Ukraine, however, their officials did not claim any direct responsibility, while Moscow blamed Kyiv. Russia had annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and Kyiv wishes&nbsp;to reclaim it as it continues to fight back against the 17-month-long full-scale invasion by&nbsp;Russia.</p>

"This is the route used to feed the war with ammunition and this is being done on a daily basis. And it militarises the Crimean peninsula," said Zelensky, in his address as heard through an interpreter.<br />
<br />
"For us, this is understandably an enemy facility built outside international laws and all applicable norms. So, understandably, this is a target for us. And a target that is bringing war, not peace, has to be neutralised,” he added.</p>

<h2><strong>'Crimea bridge attack not linked to grain export deal'</strong></h2>

<p>Replying to questions raised through a moderator, Zelensky denied any link between the withdrawal of Russia from a UN-backed deal to export grain from Ukrainian ports and the attack on the Crimea bridge.<br />

<p>Earlier this week, Russia said that this week all the ships that were heading to Ukraine's Black Sea ports could be considered military targets and that their flag countries parties to the conflict on the Ukrainian side, after it annulled their security guarantees by pulling back from the Black Sea grain deal.</p>

<p>"Unpredictable actions and, moreover, the involvement of the Kyiv regime in terrorist acts certainly potentially create a threat in this area," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.</p>

<p>On being asked if ships carrying Russian oil and other goods from Russia's Black Sea ports were at risk, Peskov told reporters that government departments would take a decision.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Ukraine's Deputy Health Minister Ihor Kuzin said that the ministry and the centres for immunisation constantly monitor the contagion risks, and the highest risk right now is a measles outbreak.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The first measles explosion in Ukraine happened over the 2017-2019 period and was a massive outbreak that the government was trying to mitigate. Around 115,000 children contracted the disease at the time,” Kuzin said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that around 260,000 children need to be vaccinated, and until that is done, the country is facing the risk of a massive outbreak. “So until 1 September, when school starts, these children need to get vaccinated,” the deputy health minister further said and urged people to get vaccinated in the next month and a half.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that Ukraine had become more vulnerable to contagious diseases following the launch of the special military operation by Russia in February 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vusala Allahverdiyeva, an expert on Disease Prevention And Immunisation at the WHO, said, "When the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, we realised that the biggest health risks in the country were diphtheria and measles outbreaks."</p>

<p>Nearly a week back, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) delivered another 657,000 doses of the combination measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) to Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Muhammad Tariq Iqbal, a Ukraine Immunisation Specialist at UNICEF, said on July 17<strong>,&nbsp;</strong>"If your child missed the routine calendar shots, you need to catch up. UNICEF has delivered these vaccines to Ukraine."</p>

<p>Two doses of the MMR vaccine, given at 12 months and six years old, provide effective protection against measles.</p>

<p>The alleged misunderstanding emerged between the minister and Zelensky after the former decided to allocate 448 million hryvnias (around $12 million) for the production of a television series.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, he also wanted to earmark a $13 million package for finishing building a museum to commemorate Ukraine's 1932-33 famine, which Kyiv sees as a deliberate act of genocide by the erstwhile Soviets.</p>

<p>Prystaiko had condemned Zelensky's sarcastic remarks to suggestions that came from British Defence Minister Ben Wallace that Ukraine should exhibit more gratitude for the arms and ammunition supplied by its allies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zelensky, in a decree that was published on the presidential website, signed the dismissal of Prystaiko. It did not cite the reason for banishment.</p>

<h2><strong>British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace warns Ukraine its allies are 'not Amazon'</strong></h2>

<p>The row began this month at the NATO summit in Vilnius when Wallace said in a press briefing that Britain was 'not an Amazon delivery service' for Ukraine and that Kyiv could express more "gratitude".</p>

<p>Wallace warned that Ukraine had to persuade US lawmakers and "doubting politicians in other countries that it's worth it", and that "whether we like it or not, people want to see gratitude".</p>

<p>Wallace, who was speaking on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Lithuania, while answering a question from a reporter about Zelensky's complaints that Kyiv had not been given a timeline for joining the alliance, recalled the time when he was handed over a shopping list of weapons during his visit to Ukraine.</p>

<p>"You know, we're not Amazon," he said, referring to the giant American tech and retail company. "I told them that last year when I drove 11 hours to be given a list."</p>

<p>The United Kingdom has been one of Kyiv's most persistent supporters since Russia's attack last year. It is the major donor of weapons and trains the Ukrainian troops. PM Rishi Sunak had also released a statement earlier saying that Britain and its allies will increase their support for Ukraine.</p>

<p>When asked about Wallace's comments, Sunak said that Zelensky had been grateful for the support given so far and that more support would be forthcoming as required.</p>

<p>"President Zelensky has expressed his gratitude for what we have done on a number of occasions," Sunak told a press conference at the summit in Vilnius.</p>

<p>"I completely understand Volodymyr's desire to do everything he can to protect his people and to stop this war, and we will continue to give him the support that he needs."</p>

<h2><strong>Ukrainian diplomat says Zelensky responded with 'a little bit of sarcasm'&nbsp;to Wallace's comments</strong></h2>

<p>The Ukrainian diplomat agreed with a suggestion from a Sky News interviewer that Zelensky had responded with "a little bit of sarcasm" to Wallace.</p>

<p>"I don't believe that this sarcasm is healthy. We don't have to show the Russians that we have something between us, they have to know that we are working together," Prystaiko added, stressing the need to smooth over relations with the UK.</p>

<p>"If anything happens, Ben can call me and tell me everything he wants," the diplomat said.</p>

<p>Prystaiko served as ambassador to the UK since July 2020. He was previously Ukraine's foreign minister from 2019 to 2020.</p>

<p>Ukraine's use of US-supplied cluster munitions against Russian forces has sparked controversy due to the weapons' risks to civilians and their widely banned status. The decision to supply these munitions was made by US President Joe Biden bypassing certain arms export restrictions. US&nbsp;justified the move as a means to support Ukraine's military efforts until more weaponry becomes available.</p>

<p>It added that officials reportedly said that these cluster munitions will be used to counteract their significant disadvantages in artillery and the number of troops.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports citing officials continued to say that the cluster munitions are being used not only on front-line positions in southeastern Ukraine but also near the Russian-controlled city of Bakhmut. It is to be noted that the battle of Bakhmut has been the site of a prolonged and intense battle during the Russia-Ukraine war since it started in February last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Biden's approval followed by criticism</strong></h2>

<p>US President Joe Biden made a "difficult" decision to authorise the delivery of the controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine. However, this decision has faced opposition from human rights groups, European allies, and some Democrats, who worry about the dangers posed to civilians by these weapons.</p>

<p>Cluster bombs are banned in more than 120 countries. These bombs disperse smaller bomblets over a wide area and therefore pose a significant risk to civilians, especially children. It is because these submunitions can remain unexploded for years after conflicts end.</p>

<p>President Biden circumvented US law that prohibits the transfer of cluster munitions with a "dud rate" exceeding 1 percent. The US president employed a rare provision of the Foreign Assistance Act, citing vital US national security interests.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Comments by Russia and Ukraine&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Ukraine about using cluster munitions, threatening retaliation if they are deployed against Russian forces. <p>According to the released document, Burisma's CEO Mykola Zlochevsky was purportedly "coerced" into paying millions of dollars to the Bidens in exchange for their help in getting fired a Ukrainian prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, who was investigating the company for corruption.</p>

<p>The matter is related to the gas firm's executive who was facing challenges in accessing the US oil market due to a corruption investigation by Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin and was seeking favour from the Bidens.</p>

<p>Fox News earlier reported citing sources said that US President Joe Biden received a substantial payment of $5 million from the executive to curry favours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The form, dated 30 June 2020, reportedly describes an interviewed source as "highly credible."</p>

<p>As per the form, the confidential human source discussed multiple meetings held with a senior executive from Burisma over several years, starting in 2015. states that the contact with the source was made via a telephonic conversation.</p>

<p>In the form, Burisma's CEO Zlochevsky revealed to the source that he had evidence such as "many text messages and ‘recordings’ to "show he was coerced to make such payments" to the Bidens.&nbsp;</p>
