Police station struck in overnight strikes as Ukraine continues drone attacks on Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on Sunday (July 30) warned that the “war” was coming to Russia after a drone attack on the capital Moscow. The statement comes hours after Russia claimed three Ukrainian drones were downed over Moscow, early Sunday. Meanwhile, Pope Francis called for Russia to reverse its decision on the Black Sea grain deal.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky’s warning</h2>

Hours after the two office blocks were damaged and one person was injured in a night-time Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow, Zelensky said, “Today is the 522nd day of the so-called ‘Special Military Operation’, which the Russian leadership thought would last a couple of weeks.”

“Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia – to its symbolic centres and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process,” Zelensky, who was in the midst of a visit to the western Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk, added.&nbsp;

“Ukraine is getting stronger,” said the Ukrainian president.&nbsp;

<h2>Russian attacks on Ukrainian power grids?</h2>

However, Zelensky also warned that Kyiv expects Moscow to resume its attacks on Ukraine’s energy system once cold weather returns later this year.&nbsp;

Nearly 40 per cent of the Ukrainian energy system was damaged in Russian missile and drone strikes over the past winter, according to a report by Reuters, the attacks had plunged Ukrainian cities into darkness and cold.&nbsp;

Kyiv has since alleged that the attacks targeting its energy grids were a deliberate strategy to harm civilians and called it a war crime. However, Moscow said that the attacks were launched to reduce Ukraine’s ability to fight.

“It is obvious that this fall and...in the winter the enemy will try to repeat the terror against the Ukrainian energy industry. We should be ready for this in any case,” said Zelensky, while addressing senior government, security, and regional officials.&nbsp;

“At the government and security level, we will do everything possible,” he added. The Ukrainian government security officials and energy workers were working to protect the energy system from physical damage, sabotage or cyberattacks, said Zelensky, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

However, every city and town across Ukraine must prepare to handle energy sector emergencies, he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Drone attack on Moscow</h2>

The Russian defence ministry, early Sunday said that three Ukrainian drones were <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/putin-claims-russia-does-not-reject-peace-talks-amid-ukrainian-drone-attack-on-moscow-city-620699">downed</a> over Moscow after Kyiv’s “attempted terrorist attack,” adding that one was shot down and two, “suppressed by electronic warfare”, crashed into a building complex.

The attack damaged two office towers and briefly shut down an international airport. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin took to Telegram and said no one suffered injuries and reported “slight damage” to the facades of two city office towers.

<h2>Pope urges Russia to restore Black Sea grain deal</h2>

During his weekly Angelus message, on Sunday (July 30), Pope Francis called on Russia to reverse its decision on the Black Sea grain deal. This comes after Moscow, earlier this month, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-russia-formally-backs-out-of-black-sea-grain-deal-what-happens-now-616637">formally backed out</a> of the deal which provided a safe passage to Ukraine through which Kyiv was able to ship grain via the Black Sea despite being in the midst of a war.&nbsp;

“I appeal to my brothers, the authorities of the Russian Federation, so that the Black Sea initiative may be resumed and grain may be transported safely,” said Francis. He also urged the crowd gathered at St Peter’s Square to continue praying “for martyred Ukraine, where war is destroying everything, even grain,” calling this “a grave insult to God.”&nbsp;

The pope also said that the “cry of millions of brothers and sisters who are suffering from hunger is rising up to the sky.” The Ukrainian president took to X, formerly known as Twitter and welcomed Francis’ remarks.&nbsp;

“The reaction of the world’s religious leaders to the Russian missile terror and destruction of Ukrainian agricultural products is extremely important to protect the whole world, and especially the peoples of Africa and Asia, who suffer the most from the threat of hunger, from a food crisis,” Zelensky wrote on the microblogging platform.&nbsp;

‘War’ is coming to Russia, says Ukraine’s Zelensky after Moscow drone attack

Hours before the opening of a significant military parade that President Vladimir Putin would be attending, Russian officials claim to have shot down three Ukrainian drones that were attacking Moscow early on Sunday. Russia-Ukraine War: Russian capital's business district targeted, no injuries reported

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has once again stirred the 'nuclear' conversation by stating that Moscow will have to use the atomic weapon if Kyiv's ongoing counter-offensive was a success.&nbsp;

Russian President Vladimir Putin's top ally made the comments on social media, imagining a situation where Russian troops were forced to step back by the Ukrainians.&nbsp;

"Imagine if the...offensive, which is backed by NATO, was a success and they tore off a part of our land then we would be forced to use a nuclear weapon according to the rules of a decree from the president of Russia," said Medvedev, who is the deputy chairman of Russia's security council.

"There would simply be no other option. So our enemies should pray for our warriors' (success). They are making sure that a global nuclear fire is not ignited," he added.

Medvedev was referring to Russia's nuclear doctrine which lays out that weapons of mass destruction can be used in response to aggression against Russia carried out using conventional weapons which threatens the existence of the state.

Ukraine has launched a counter-offensive against the Russians to retake territory unilaterally annexed and declared as&nbsp;part of its own by Putin. However, the move is yet to show tangible results. Putin last week said there were no serious battlefield changes to report in recent days and that Ukraine's military had suffered significant losses since June 4.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Not&nbsp;Medvedev's first rodeo</h2>

Notably, this is not the first instance when&nbsp;Medvedev has&nbsp;made rather hyperbolic statements. Putin's top ally previously said that a civil war will break out in the US in 2023 and that if Russia lost in the ongoing war, it could provoke the beginning of a 'nuclear war'.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, he also threatened hypersonic missile attacks on the&nbsp;International Criminal Court (ICC) after the global organisation issued an arrest warrant against Putin.

Mincing no words, Medvedev suggested that the ICC judges 'watch the skies closely,'&nbsp;referring to an impending missile coming their way.&nbsp;

"I'm afraid, gentlemen, everyone is answerable to God and missiles. It's quite possible to imagine how a hypersonic Oniks fired from a Russian warship in the North Sea strikes the court building in the Hague," Medvedev wrote on Telegram.&nbsp;

Russian president Vladimir Putin has claimed that Moscow has not rejected talks with Ukraine and is studying the peace plan proposed by Africa. He said that the peace plans proposed by China and Africa could be the ones which can serve as basis to resolve the conflict. Putin added that it is hard to implement a ceasefire when the Ukrainian army is on the offensive. During the summit, eritrea's president Isaias Afwerki who is also among the participants declared that there is no Russia-Ukraine war. Afwerki blamed the war in Ukraine on NATO, saying that its objective is to "Dominate the world. Saudi Arabia is reportedly set to host talks on Ukraine conflcit in August. Russia-Ukraine War: Putin claims that Russia has not rejected talks with Ukraine

Russia on Sunday (July 30) said that its forces thwarted an attempt by Ukraine to attack Russia-annexed Crimea with 25 drones overnight.

"Sixteen Ukrainian UAVs were destroyed by air defence fire," said the Russian defence ministry, speaking about the unmanned aerial vehicles. "Another nine Ukrainian drones were suppressed by means of electronic warfare and, without reaching the target, crashed into the Black Sea," said the ministry, adding that no victims were reported in the attack.

Russia had annexed Crimea in 2014 and it has remained on Kyiv's radar&nbsp;throughout Moscow's offensive against Ukraine. However, the region has come under more intense, increased attacks in the last&nbsp;few weeks.

Repeatedly, Kyiv has expressed its intention of taking back Crimea.

<h2>Three Ukrainian drones downed over Moscow</h2>

Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry on Sunday (July 30) said that three Ukrainian drones were shot down over Moscow. In the attack, two office towers were damaged and an international airport was briefly shut.

Russian officials shot down one of the drones on the outskirts of the city and two others were "suppressed by electronic warfare", but they smashed into an office complex. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The defence ministry said it was an "attempted terrorist attack". "On the morning of July 30, the Kyiv regime's attempted terrorist attack with unmanned aerial vehicles on objects in the city of Moscow was thwarted," it stated on Telegram.

Putin was addressing a press conference after holding a meeting with African leaders in St Petersburg and listening to their calls for Moscow to take steps and go ahead with their plan. Amid Ukrainian drone attack in Moscow, Putin claims Russia is not against peace talks

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, on Saturday (July 29) said that a group of a hundred soldiers from Russia’s Wagner mercenary group have moved closer to the Belarusian city of Grodno near the Polish border. This comes weeks after Poland’s defence minister said that they are moving more than 1,000 troops to the east of the country amid concerns over the presence of Wagner fighters in the neighbouring country.&nbsp;

<h2>Polish PM’s warning</h2>

Morawiecki warned that the Wagner fighters – who are living in exile in Belarus after their chief Yevgeny Prigozhin aborted a mutiny in Russia – may engage in what Poland describes as “hybrid warfare,” where the Russian group's fighters&nbsp;in Belarus could facilitate illegal migration from Belarus, said the Polish PM. &nbsp;

The fighters could pose as migrants from the city of Grodno, close to the Polish and Lithuanian borders, and enter the European Union, said Morawiecki. Poland, a former Warsaw Pact member and now a member of the United States-led NATO military alliance, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022.&nbsp;

However, Warsaw has also expressed concerns about the possible spillover of the Ukraine war onto its territory.&nbsp;

“The situation is getting increasingly dangerous...Most likely they (the Wagner personnel) will be disguised as the Belarusian border guard and help illegal migrants get to the Polish territory (and) destabilise Poland,” said Morawiecki&nbsp;during a press conference in western Poland.

“This is certainly a step towards a further hybrid attack on Polish territory,” he added. Notably, the Polish PM did not give a source of information that Wagner fighters were moving closer to Grodno.&nbsp;

However, given the location of the city, it may be potentially significant as it is near the Suwalki Gap, a strategic strip of 95 kilometres of land along the Polish-Lithuanian border, which divides Belarus, Russia’s ally, from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

According to Morawiecki, there have been 16,000 attempts to cross the border between Belarus and Poland&nbsp;so far this year.&nbsp;

<h2>Poland ramps up border security</h2>

Earlier this <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ukrainian-official-seemingly-claims-responsibility-for-crimea-bridge-blast-613657">month</a>, Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said, “Over 1,000 soldiers and almost 200 units of equipment from the 12th and 17th Mechanized Brigades are starting to move to the east of the country.” This was&nbsp;amid concerns over the presence of Wagner&nbsp;fighters in neighbouring Belarus.

He added, “This is a demonstration of our readiness to respond to attempts at destabilisation near the border of our country.”&nbsp;

Russia received 30 peace initiatives for Ukraine war truce from diverse channels

An apartment block was hit by a Russian missile in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Friday (July 29) in which nine people, including two children, were injured, said Kyiv officials.

"Dnipro. Another terrorist attack," stated Sergiy Kruk, head of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service, on Telegram. "Currently, we know of 9 injured, including two children. Work continues,” he added. Earlier, Internal Affairs Minister Igor Klymenko reported "a Russian strike on a multistorey building in Dnipro", stating five people suffered injuries.

Regional governor Serhiy Lysak, taking to the Telegram messaging app, said that the injured were being treated at home. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov said that this was the third time the SBU security service building was targeted by Russia. The two buildings were empty - the residential building had no one inside it because it just got completed and units were being put up for sale.

"There were two hits in Dnipro at about 8.30 p.m. (1730 GMT), Iskander missiles, according to preliminary information," said Lysak, while speaking on national television. "Part of the apartment building was destroyed. It was not even yet in use and there weren't many people there. A few people were trapped but are now out. The security service building is partially destroyed,” he added.

<h2>'Russian missile terror again'</h2>

In the videos shared on social media, smoke was seen billowing from the residential building's top floors, which were&nbsp;badly damaged. President Volodymyr Zelensky said, "Dnipro. Friday evening. A high-rise building and the Security Service of Ukraine's building were hit. Russian missile terror again".

"All necessary services are on site... We keep the situation under control. We will do everything to bring Russia to full punishment for aggression and terror against our people,” he added.

On Friday, Russia said that two Ukrainian missiles were intercepted over its southern Rostov region, which was bordering Ukraine. It stated that the falling debris had wounded at least a dozen people in the city of Taganrog.

<h2>Kyiv using North Korean rockets to attack Russian forces</h2>

According to a report published by the Financial Times on Saturday (July 29), Ukrainian soldiers have been observed using North Korean rockets which they claim were seized by a "friendly" country and then delivered to Ukraine.

An apartment block was hit by a Russian missile in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Friday (July 29) in which nine people, including two children, were injured, said Kyiv officials. "Dnipro. Another terrorist attack," stated Sergiy Kruk, head of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service, on Telegram. "Currently, we know of 9 injured, including two children. Work continues,” he added. Earlier, Internal Affairs Minister Igor Klymenko reported "a Russian strike on a multistorey building in Dnipro", stating five people suffered injuries. Regional governor Serhiy Lysak, taking to the Telegram messaging app, said that the injured were being treated at home. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov said that this was the third time the SBU security service building was targeted by Russia. The two buildings were empty - the residential building had no one inside it because it just got completed and units were being put up for sale. The security service building is partially destroyed,” he added. 'Russian missile terror again' In the videos shared on social media, smoke was seen billowing from the residential building's top floors, which were badly damaged. President Volodymyr Zelensky said, "Dnipro. Friday evening. A high-rise building and the Security Service of Ukraine's building were hit. Russian missile terror again". "All necessary services are on site... We keep the situation under control. We will do everything to bring Russia to full punishment for aggression and terror against our people,” he added. On Friday, Russia said that two Ukrainian missiles were intercepted over its southern Rostov region, which was bordering Ukraine. It stated that the falling debris had wounded at least a dozen people in the city of Taganrog. The Russian military claimed to have shot down two Ukrainian missiles, on Friday (July 28), over the southwestern city of Taganrog near the border with Ukraine and a second one near the city of Azov. Over a dozen people were reported injured in Taganrog, said the regional governor, which Moscow claimed was after it intercepted a missile over the city.&nbsp;

<h2>Over a dozen injured in Taganrog</h2>

Addressing the incident, the Russian defence ministry said, it was the fragments of the Ukrainian missile that injured civilians and damaged buildings in the city of Taganrog.&nbsp;

“Russian air defence equipment detected the Ukrainian missile and intercepted it in the air. The debris of the downed Ukrainian missile fell on the territory of Taganrog,” claimed the Russian military.&nbsp;

It also alleged that the modified “Soviet-made S-200 missile”&nbsp;was aimed at the “residential infrastructure” of the city which is 40 kilometres from the border with Ukraine and home to around 250,000 people.&nbsp;

Rostov region governor Vasily Golubev reported that some 12&nbsp;people suffered “light injuries” due to the blast which took place near the “Chekhov Garden” cafe in the centre of the city.&nbsp;

He had previously also said that the “rescuers are at the scene. There are no dead. There are several injured to whom ambulances have been dispatched.” Nine people have been taken to the hospital, said Golubev.&nbsp;One of the victims suffered a “traumatic brain injury,” and had surgery, he added.

The Russian official also said that the Taganrog Art Museum was the “epicentre of the explosion” which is a few hundred metres away from the cafe, and its roof and buildings were destroyed. Additionally, a nearby three-storey residential building was also damaged due to the explosion.&nbsp;

Images and videos from the site of the blast show rubble and a damaged building with multiple emergency service personnel present. Ukraine is yet to comment on the incident and respond to the allegations but it rarely addresses attacks inside Russia or on Russian-controlled territory.

<h2>Second Ukrainian missile near Azov</h2>

It was not long after the first alleged attack was reported by the Russian military that it claimed to have shot another Ukrainian missile over the southwestern part of the country, but this time the debris reportedly fell in a “deserted area.”&nbsp;

“Russian air defence systems intercepted a Ukrainian missile near the city of Azov in the Rostov region. Fragments of the downed Ukrainian missile fell in a deserted area,” said the defence ministry.

<h2>Another blast reported in Samara</h2>

In a separate incident, Member of parliament Alexander Khinshtein reported an explosion at a refinery owned by Rosneft in Russia’s Samara region which appeared to have been caused by a bomb.

“Fortunately there is no serious damage and no casualties,” said the Russian official on Telegram.&nbsp;

Russian state media had earlier&nbsp;reported&nbsp;that a person believed to have been responsible for the Samara blast has been arrested.&nbsp;RIA news agency, citing Rosneft, said the incident occurred at a non-operational old building and that no one was injured and no equipment was damaged.

Moscow claims to have shot down Ukrainian missiles over Russian cities Taganrog, Azov

Russian military airfields have been targeted in Ukraine. Thank you, and indeed, that is exactly what is occurring. Shivan us all the specifics, let's go on. Russia is waging a full-scale war against Ukraine, and this time they are also attacking the facilities of storage for Western munitions and launching an attack on the Kirsch bridge.

Russia-Ukraine War: Putin's payback for Crimea bridge attack

Ukrainian forces are continuing their counteroffensive against Russian occupation in the southeast, with recent progress made in the capture of the village of Staromaiorske.

This campaign is strategically focused on securing villages in the southward push and areas around the city of Bakhmut, which was taken by Russian forces in May following months of intense battles.

Ukrainian officials reported steady progress, while Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that Ukrainian attacks have been unsuccessful, with Moscow's forces inflicting significant losses on their opponents, as reported by Reuters.

The counteroffensive has drawn attention from the international community, and reports indicate that Ukraine has deployed additional Western-trained troops to aid in the efforts. The situation remains tense as both sides engage in ongoing battles to gain control over strategic locations in the region.

Despite Ukraine's gains in some areas, Russia still holds about 20 per cent&nbsp;of Ukraine's land. To counter the occupation and strengthen wildlife conservation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky&nbsp;announced the recapture of Staromaiorske in a video posted on his Telegram channel. He praised the efforts of the 35th brigade and the 'Ariy' territorial defence unit, highlighting their contribution to the counteroffensive.

<h2>Targeting strategic locations</h2>

The primary objective of the Ukrainian forces is to drive a wedge through Russian defensive positions and sever the land bridge linking the occupied areas in the east and Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Ukrainian military analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko emphasised the significance of capturing the village of Staromlynivka, which serves as a stronghold for Russian occupiers and is crucial for the success of the counteroffensive in this region.

President Zelensky&nbsp;acknowledged the slow progress of the counteroffensive but cautioned against unrealistic expectations, urging patience and determination for successful results. He toured various regions, including Dnipro, Odesa, and Ochakiv, where he assessed damage from Russian airstrikes and frequent shelling.

In the east, Russia's defence ministry claims to have repelled Ukrainian attacks around the village of Klishchiivka, situated near Bakhmut and north of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar writes on Telegram that Ukrainian forces are gradually moving forward near Bakhmut and successfully fending off Russian attacks on two northern fronts near Kupiansk and Lyman.

The conflict continues to cause uncertainty and tension in the region, with the outcome remaining uncertain. Both sides are determined to achieve their objectives, and the world watches closely as the situation unfolds in this ongoing struggle for territorial control and preservation of natural heritage.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (July 26) claimed that Ukraine had intensified attacks on the frontline in the last few days. Reuters reported that a Ukrainian official said the country's forces are making slow but steady progress in the battlefield.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, three different media outlets cited unnamed US officials as saying Kyiv had launched a new phase of its ambitious counteroffensive which seeks to eject Russian troops from nearly 20% of Ukrainian land still under occupation.

Asked about these reports, Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine's defence minister, told Reuters that "there is nothing new" happening at front lines. "In the south, we are moving forward slowly but surely," he said.

As he interacted with Russian television, Putin claimed that every Ukrainian attack had been beaten back. He also said that Russian forces had inflicted significant losses on their opponents.

Defence ministries of both countries appeared to offer contradicting reports of fighting.

Ukraine has enjoyed success in a few areas. One of these is the Mokri Yaly river in southeastern Ukraine. In this area, the Ukrainian troops have captured several settlements. The forces are now heading towards the village of Staromaiorske. The village is currently held by Russia.

Aleksandr Khodakovsky, an influential Moscow-backed separatist commander in eastern Ukraine, posted an angry message on his Telegram channel on Wednesday complaining about heavy shelling of Staromaiorske over several days followed by a Ukrainian assault which had made some gains.

Sak said there was fighting ongoing near Staromaiorske but the village was "not yet" under Ukrainian control.

Ukraine intensifying attacks on frontline, Russian forces inflicted heavy losses, claims Putin

There have been a list of Russian generals that have been dismissed by Putin, experts say that it is a sign that generals are judged more on their loyalty than their performance on the battlefield meanwhile Ukrainian president Volodymr Zelensky also sacked one of its commanders amidst corruption scandals.

Not only is Kyiv hampered by a shortage of ammunition but some of the tactics that are now being deployed by the Russians have created serious problems. In the past week, Russia has started to use its anti-ship missiles, such as the p-800 Onyx to strike land targets inside Ukraine. And this has created all kinds of problems for the Ukrainian anti-air defence systems. Yuri Ihnat, the spokesperson of the Ukrainian air force has gone on record to state that Ukraine simply hasn't got the means to guard itself against missiles like the Onyx along its coast. So why is Ukraine getting outgunned at its ports in this stage of the war? Mohammed Saleh gets you the details.
