After the drama of Tuesday`s other semi-final, which saw Manchester City beat Real Madrid 4-3 at the Etihad, it was never going to be easy for this game to compete in the entertainment stakes.

But Liverpool did enough to build themselves a solid lead for Tuesday`s return game in Spain where they will be confident of finishing off the job.

Villarreal defended in numbers in the first half to frustrate the six-times European Cup winners, with Thiago Alcantara going closest to breaking the deadlock with a thunderous strike from distance that hit the post.

It was the first time that 13-times European champions Real had conceded two goals so quickly in the Champions League and another looked on the cards. Still, City searched for more but substitute Raheem Sterling and Ruben Dias were both unable to make contact with a dangerous ball across the box and then Dias slid in again and was just inches away from a deep Mahrez cross. 
The score was to remain 4-3 but for those who wished this game could have just gone on and on there is another 90 minutes to look forward to next week.

There is some history that is in City`s favour, however -- two years ago Guardiola`s side knocked the current La Liga leaders out of the competition in the last 16 stage after winning both legs 2-1. City may have to take on Real without their first choice right back Kyle Walker and central defender John Stones, who are both doubtful with injuries.

Walker has been struggling with an ankle injury picked up against Atletico Madrid in the previous round and Stones is battling with a hamstring strain he gained in the midweek win over Brighton &amp; Hove Albion.

Man City ride out Atletico storm to secure UEFA Champions League semi-final spot

There were a few nerves at the end but Liverpool set up a Champions League semi-final with Spain`s Villarreal after Roberto Firmino scored twice in a 3-3 second-leg draw with Benfica on Wednesday to ensure a 6-4 aggregate win.

Juergen Klopp`s side had been 3-1 up on the night before the visitors struck twice late in the game to create a jittery finale to what had appeared to be a comfortable passage.

The Lisbon side exited the competition with the applause of their own fans -- and Liverpool`s -- ringing in their ears after delivering a performance full of belief and commitment until the end.

With a 3-1 lead from the first leg in Lisbon, Liverpool manager Klopp made seven changes to the team which drew with Manchester City at the weekend, but his squad showed their improved strength in depth with Luis Diaz and Kostas Tsimikas particularly impressing.

Benfica forward Darwin Nunez had seen an effort ruled out for offside before Liverpool took the lead with a powerful header from a corner by defender Ibrahima Konate in the 21st minute.

Konate, who had also scored in the first leg, rose well to meet Tsimikas`s corner and give Liverpool a three-goal cushion.

The lead on the night lasted just 11 minutes though before Benfica pulled level through Goncalo Ramos, who beat Alisson Becker after a tackle from James Milner had fallen to him on the edge of the box.

Brazilian Firmino scored twice after the break as Liverpool looked to make sure of a place in the semi-finals for the third time in five seasons.

He made it 2-1 in the 55th minute after Benfica keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos spilled the ball out, his defenders could not clear their lines and Diogo Jota`s slightly mis-hit cross was turned in by the Brazilian at the back post.

Firmino`s second goal was a more elegant affair -- Tsimikas floating a free kick over the Benfica defence for the striker to beat Vlachodimos with a side-footed volley.

But Benfica stuck at the task well and pulled two goals back in the latter stages to return a degree of tension to Anfield.

Substitute Roman Yaremchuk made it 3-2, the Ukrainian forward latching on to a through ball from Alejandro Grimaldo and rounding Alisson before sliding his finish into the empty net.

The goal was initially flagged for offside but allowed after a video review.

It was a similar story for their equaliser on the night - with Nunez`s effort, after Benfica sprung Liverpool`s offside trap, also ruled out before the intervention from VAR.

The impressive Nunez had an effort disallowed in stoppage time but this time VAR backed the on-field call and Liverpool could evade what might have been a scary final few minutes.

The France striker rocked Chelsea when he converted pinpoint crosses with headers, first from Vinicius Jr from the left in the 21st minute and then from Luka Modric on the right in the 24th, leaving Mendy with no chance on either occasion.

Benzema had looked certain to claim his hat-trick just before halftime but he fired wide with Chelsea's usually rock-solid defence looking ragged.

"They're very important goals. I'm happiest to have scored the third as I missed one in the first half and I was thinking about that chance because it's very important to score goals. Then I got another and I’m very happy," Benzema told Spanish television.

"Today we came out to win, to show we're Real Madrid. Things worked out well for us as we played well, from the first minute to the last."

The Spaniards were seeking revenge after the Londoners eliminated them in last season's semi-finals before the Blues won the trophy in Porto.

There was an early warning sign for the Londoners when Vinicius Jr cracked a shot against the bar in the 10th minute.

Following PSG's defeat against Real, there were reports that Neymar and Donnarumma were involved in a heated altercation in the dressing room.

Reports stated that the duo had to be pulled apart by their teammates and was almost on the verge of exchanging blows in the dressing room while blaming each other for the defeat. However, Neymar took to Instagram to rubbish the rumours and said there was no fight inside the PSG dressing room.

UEFA has also confirmed that Russian and Ukrainian clubs along with their national teams will play their matches at neutral venues in the UEFA competitions. Russian club Spartak Moscow is currently part of the ongoing Europa League.

Spartak Moscow is scheduled to play on Friday while the Russian national team is also scheduled to take on Ukraine in the World Cup playoffs next month. UEFA has said the matches of the Russian and Ukrainian clubs will be played at neutral venues until further notice. Russia and Ukraine are also scheduled to feature in the UEFA Nations League in June this year.
