Manchester City produced a disciplined performance to secure a fractious 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday and reach the Champions League semi-finals 1-0 on aggregate.

Tensions boiled over in the closing stages and Atletico defender Felipe was sent off after receiving a second yellow card before the teams played out 12 minutes of added time.

Scuffles broke out among the players following Felipe’s dismissal for kicking out at Phil Foden and continued after the final whistle as the teams went down the tunnel, with the police having to intervene to restore calm.

The English champions were comfortable in the first half, Ilkay Gundogan struck the post with their best chance after a flowing move down the right, but they did not manage another attempt on goal the rest of the game.

City manager Pep Guardiola dared Atletico to get away from their usual conservative approach and, roared on by a boisterous crowd at Metropolitano stadium, they tried hard to play with more attacking intent.

The visitors were patient, slowing down the pace of the game and running down the clock to the displeasure of Atletico manager Diego Simeone and their vocal supporters crowd.

The Spanish champions enjoyed more possession after the interval and threatened to score the goal that would have taken the game into extra time but were unable to break down the City defence despite creating several good chances.

City had only two goal attempts to 12 from Atletico after the break and their goalkeeper Ederson made two crucial stops in added time to ensure his team advanced to the last four.

"I`m proud of my team mates for the effort they have made, nothing to blame the team for. We`ve had our chances, we haven`t taken advantage of them and congratulations to the rival, but Atleti deserved more."

Man City ride out Atletico storm to secure UEFA Champions League semi-final spot

There were a few nerves at the end but Liverpool set up a Champions League semi-final with Spain`s Villarreal after Roberto Firmino scored twice in a 3-3 second-leg draw with Benfica on Wednesday to ensure a 6-4 aggregate win.

Juergen Klopp`s side had been 3-1 up on the night before the visitors struck twice late in the game to create a jittery finale to what had appeared to be a comfortable passage.

The Lisbon side exited the competition with the applause of their own fans -- and Liverpool`s -- ringing in their ears after delivering a performance full of belief and commitment until the end.

With a 3-1 lead from the first leg in Lisbon, Liverpool manager Klopp made seven changes to the team which drew with Manchester City at the weekend, but his squad showed their improved strength in depth with Luis Diaz and Kostas Tsimikas particularly impressing.

Benfica forward Darwin Nunez had seen an effort ruled out for offside before Liverpool took the lead with a powerful header from a corner by defender Ibrahima Konate in the 21st minute.

Konate, who had also scored in the first leg, rose well to meet Tsimikas`s corner and give Liverpool a three-goal cushion.

The lead on the night lasted just 11 minutes though before Benfica pulled level through Goncalo Ramos, who beat Alisson Becker after a tackle from James Milner had fallen to him on the edge of the box.

Brazilian Firmino scored twice after the break as Liverpool looked to make sure of a place in the semi-finals for the third time in five seasons.

He made it 2-1 in the 55th minute after Benfica keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos spilled the ball out, his defenders could not clear their lines and Diogo Jota`s slightly mis-hit cross was turned in by the Brazilian at the back post.

Firmino`s second goal was a more elegant affair -- Tsimikas floating a free kick over the Benfica defence for the striker to beat Vlachodimos with a side-footed volley.

But Benfica stuck at the task well and pulled two goals back in the latter stages to return a degree of tension to Anfield.

Substitute Roman Yaremchuk made it 3-2, the Ukrainian forward latching on to a through ball from Alejandro Grimaldo and rounding Alisson before sliding his finish into the empty net.

The goal was initially flagged for offside but allowed after a video review.

It was a similar story for their equaliser on the night - with Nunez`s effort, after Benfica sprung Liverpool`s offside trap, also ruled out before the intervention from VAR.

The impressive Nunez had an effort disallowed in stoppage time but this time VAR backed the on-field call and Liverpool could evade what might have been a scary final few minutes.

Liverpool`s thoughts will now turn to their FA Cup semi-final with Premier League title rivals Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday.
But for Benfica, it was an honourable exit from the tournament as their fans recognised with long and loud appreciation after the final whistle.

Roberto Firmino fires Liverpool into UEFA Champions League semis despite Benfica rally

Real Madrid and Villarreal reaching the Champions League semi-finals this week showed the strength of LaLiga, Barcelona manager Xavi said on Wednesday as he eyes a return to Europe`s elite competition next season.

Real knocked out holders Chelsea while Villarreal stunned German champions Bayern Munich to reach the last four of the competition on Tuesday.

Xavi could only watch on as his side are in action on Thursday in the second-tier Europa League, hosting Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of their quarter-final. The tie is level after a 1-1 draw in last week`s first leg in Germany.
However, Xavi praised his Spanish rivals for their progress and said it showed the quality of the league.

"What happened on Tuesday shows that LaLiga is not far behind the Premier League," Xavi told a news conference.

"No matter what, LaLiga will always be LaLiga and it`s very competitive. I saw both games. I am a soccer fan. And in the end our main goal is to be back in the Champions League.

"By the way, Villarreal are a big club now, aren`t they? You all should put them on your big clubs list."

The Europa League represents Barca`s only realistic chance of lifting a trophy this season as Real have a 12 point advantage at the top of the LaLiga standings. Barca are second, level on 30 points with third-placed Sevilla.

However, Xavi denied there was pressure on his side to win silverware due to Real`s form.

"It is the history of Barca that demands of us, not Madrid," the Spanish coach said. "We do not look at Real Madrid to mirror ourselves. Our history is our biggest pressure and responsibility.

Real Madrid and Villarreal show LaLiga not far behind Premier League, says Barcelona head coach Xavi

Bayern Munich were stunned as underdogs Villarreal scored an 88th-minute equaliser through substitute Samuel Chukwueze to snatch a 1-1 draw and reach the Champions League semi-finals with a 2-1 aggregate win over the Germans on Tuesday.

Six-time European champions Bayern, who had won 12 of their previous 13 home games in the competition, levelled the tie when Robert Lewandowski drilled the ball in off the post after 52 minutes with his 13th Champions League goal of the season.

Yet despite controlling the game they failed to score again. Instead, it was Villarreal, semi-finalists in 2006, who netted against the run of play with Chukwueze beating goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with a left-foot effort to silence the home crowd.

Villarreal will play Liverpool or Benfica in the last four, with the English side leading 3-1 after the first leg in Portugal, with the return at Anfield on Wednesday. "We feel a lot of happiness. Ever since the draw paired us with Bayern, we have been telling ourselves that we could do it," Villarreal forward Gerard Moreno said. "The belief and the way this team competes has helped us to achieve it."

"In the first leg we made the mistake of not finishing the tie, and all the comments serve as motivation for us. They made the mistake today of not killing us off and we took advantage of that."

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann fielded an attacking formation with Jamal Musiala, Lewandowski and Thomas Mueller upfront but they had only one effort on target in the first half with Musiala`s weak header on the half-hour mark.
Villarreal, unchanged from last week`s 1-0 win in Spain, were comfortable with staying back and efficiently absorbing the waves of Bayern attacks while remaining a threat on the break.

But Unai Emery`s team looked out of sorts after the break, piling up errors and losing possession as Bayern instantly upped the pressure. Home defender Dayot Upamecano should have done better when his shot from eight metres flew over the bar in the 49th minute but Lewandowski did not miss three minutes later.

Bayern intercepted a sloppy Villarreal pass and the Pole finished the quick move with a low drive off the post.
The Bavarians, who had scored a total of 20 goals in their previous four home games in the competition this term, came close to a second goal in the 71st but Mueller`s diving header went wide.

It was left to Villarreal, Europa League winners last year, to punished the hosts with a sucker punch through Nigeria winger Chukwueze, to reach the semis for the first time in 16 years.

"If you want to achieve something in this competition you need to beat the big teams," Emery said. "We took the first step (in the last 16) with Juventus. With Bayern we analysed the game well."

"Now Benfica or Liverpool it is the same. We have a semi- where we will try to use our chances," he added.

Samuel Chukwueze's late equaliser helps Villarreal shock Bayern Munich to reach Champions League semis

Real Madrid saw off a stirring Chelsea fightback to book their place in the Champions League semi-finals following a 3-2 defeat after extra time in a scintillating second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday to go through 5-4 on aggregate.

Chelsea had looked on course to complete an astonishing comeback after taking a 3-0 lead in their quarter-final second leg with goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and an excellent individual effort from Timo Werner.

Yet the hosts came roaring back, with Rodrygo finishing from a superb pass by Luka Modric to level the tie 4-4 on aggregate and force extra time when Karim Benzema headed home to decide a remarkable encounter.

Real Madrid will now face either Manchester City or local rivals Atletico Madrid in the last four, with the English side taking a 1-0 lead into their quarter-final second leg in Spain on Wednesday.

It was a Champions League night for the ages at a packed stadium as a brilliant Chelsea came within 10 minutes of completing a rescue act that their manager Thomas Tuchel had said they were unlikely to accomplish.

His team took the game to Real Madrid as they looked to turn around a two-goal deficit from the first leg and it took only 15 minutes for Mount to open the scoring from a through ball behind the defence.

Chelsea were even more aggressive after the break and scored their second in the 51st minute when Rudiger guided home a header from a Werner corner to level the tie 3-3 on aggregate.

Four minutes later, Werner found Marcos Alonso inside the area and he thrashed his finish into the top corner only to see his effort chalked off by the video assistant referee who had spotted a handball from the Spanish left back.

With the visitors on top, however, it was only a matter of time until they scored their third which arrived in the 75th minute from a brilliant piece of individual skill from Werner, who left two opponents on the ground before dispatching a precise shot past Courtois and inside the far post.

In the very next move, Kai Havertz was denied by former Chelsea keeper Courtois, who made a magnificent save to stop his close-range header. Yet just when Real looked completely out of the game, Modric worked his magic, finding substitute Rodrygo at the far post with a delightful pass with the outside of his boot that the Brazilian volleyed past Edouard Mendy in the 80th to take the game to extra time.

That was the cue for Vinicius Jr and Benzema to show up and rescue Real Madrid from what would have been one of the biggest shocks they had ever suffered at home.

Vinicius worked his way inside from the left corner, and sent a lovely cross onto Benzema`s head, and the Frenchman bulleted it past Mendy as the ecstatic home fans exploded with joy.

Real Madrid survive superb Chelsea comeback to reach Champions League semi-finals

A hat-trick by veteran striker Karim Benzema, including two fine headed goals in the space of three first-half minutes, earned Real Madrid a 3-1 win at reigning European champions Chelsea in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.

Benzema, 34, claimed his hat-trick when he pounced on an error by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy just after halftime to put the Spaniards in control of the tie before Tuesday's second leg in Madrid.

Kai Havertz had restored some hope to the Blues when he headed in an angled pass from Jorginho in the 40th minute to make it 2-1.

But Chelsea's chances of a comeback were undone by Mendy's mistake in the 46th minute when, outside his box, he tried to pass to Antonio Rudiger only for Benzema to intercept and steer the ball into an empty net for his 37th goal of the season.

The France striker rocked Chelsea when he converted pinpoint crosses with headers, first from Vinicius Jr from the left in the 21st minute and then from Luka Modric on the right in the 24th, leaving Mendy with no chance on either occasion.

Benzema had looked certain to claim his hat-trick just before halftime but he fired wide with Chelsea's usually rock-solid defence looking ragged.

"They're very important goals. I'm happiest to have scored the third as I missed one in the first half and I was thinking about that chance because it's very important to score goals. Then I got another and I’m very happy," Benzema told Spanish television.

"Today we came out to win, to show we're Real Madrid. Things worked out well for us as we played well, from the first minute to the last."

The Spaniards were seeking revenge after the Londoners eliminated them in last season's semi-finals before the Blues won the trophy in Porto.

There was an early warning sign for the Londoners when Vinicius Jr cracked a shot against the bar in the 10th minute.

Chelsea sought to fight back in the second half with the best chance falling to substitute Romelu Lukaku - Chelsea's record signing who has struggled to fit in at Stamford Bridge - but he headed narrowly wide as a deflected ball dropped to him on the edge of the six-yard box in the 69th minute.

In the dying moments, Hakim Ziyech, also on as a sub, fired over from 13 yards.

Real - who have been crowned European champions 13 times but had never previously beaten Chelsea - are now in pole position to advance into the semi-finals to face either Manchester City or crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, who spent two years as Chelsea head coach and led the Blues to the Premier League and FA Cup double in the 2009/10 season, hailed his team's control of the game and the danger they posed on the counterattack.

ALSO READ: Argentina legend Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' shirt likely to fetch $5.23 million at auction The France striker rocked Chelsea when he converted pinpoint crosses with headers, first from Vinicius Jr from the left in the 21st minute and then from Luka Modric on the right in the 24th, leaving Mendy with no chance on either occasion. Things worked out well for us as we played well, from the first minute to the last." The Spaniards were seeking revenge after the Londoners eliminated them in last season's semi-finals before the Blues won the trophy in Porto. UEFA Champions League: Karim Benzema scores hat-trick as Real Madrid stun Chelsea 3-1

Villarreal stunned six times European Cup winners Bayern Munich with a deserved 1-0 win after creating a hatful of chances in a frantic Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.

In the end Nigerian-born Dutch forward Arnaut Danjuma's eighth minute strike gave Unai Emery's side a slender lead for the second leg at the Allianz Arena in Munich next Tuesday.

Villarreal took the game to Bayern and should probably have won by a larger margin given their clear opportunities.

The Europa League holders suffocated Julian Nagelsmann’s team, who struggled to find their touch in the final third, and were a constant menace to keeper Manuel Neuer on the counter.

Villarreal had a Francis Coquelin effort chalked off by VAR for offside while Gerard Moreno almost scored twice - first with a long-range strike that hit the post and later trying to lob Neuer with an effort from inside his own half that went wide.

Danjuma and Alfonso Pedraza wasted two clear chances in the last few minutes, missing the target from inside the area.

"Our team is very hungry and humble," Man-of-the-Match Giovani Lo Celso told Movistar Plus. "But we faced one of the best teams in the world and we go out with the sensation that we should have scored several more goals."

"We knew that we needed to shorten the field for them - they are a team that can’t have spaces to work the ball. We played our game, we are a team that always try to be the protagonist and we had a lot of opportunities to win by a bigger margin."

Villarreal coach Unai Emery has won a record four Europa League titles - three with Sevilla - and his current side look to have inherited his DNA and adapted it to the Champions League in their efforts to compete toe-to-toe with the leading clubs.

They eliminated Juventus in the last 16 and have now shocked Bayern, who were unbeaten in this year's competition and tasted their first Champions League defeat away from home since 2017.

The build-up to Villarreal's winner started with Moreno, who is the heart and soul of the Yellow Submarine.

He received the ball close to the right touchline and played it through to Lo Celso whose low cross was struck first time by Dani Parejo. Neuer looked to have it covered but Danjuma got there first and stroked the ball home from close range.

"We know that it will be a completely different game in Germany," captain Parejo told reporters.

"We had at least five opportunities to score, they didn’t create a single one. That says a lot about what we are capable of. So we will go there and compete with the same passion."

"We've won the game with 1-0 and after 1-0 it was a little bit different. All the players start to press a little bit higher," Guardiola said.

Liverpool took their chances to earn a 3-1 victory at Benfica in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.

The Premier League team scored twice in the first half to take command of this quarter-final tie before Luis Diaz grabbed a late clincher.

Liverpool had won all four away games in the competition this season and were quickly into their stride, Odisseas Vlachodimos thwarting Mohamed Salah early on before the Reds made the breakthrough in the 17th minute when Ibrahima Konate headed in his first UEFA Champions League goal from Andy Robertson's corner.

The difference in ruthlessness in the first half was summed up when Nicolas Otamendi glanced Benfica's first chance wide and the visitors responded by doubling their lead shortly after.

Sadio Mane tapped in after Luis Diaz had met Trent Alexander-Arnold`s raking pass with a cushioned header.

Home coach Nelson Verissimo rallied his side at the break, though, and they prised a foothold in the contest in the 49th minute when talisman Darwin Nunez pounced after Konate failed to cut out Rafa Silva's cross.

The Reds then soaked up further pressure from the home side and struck late on when Naby Keita slipped Diaz through the centre as the former Porto midfielder coolly skipped past Vlachodimos to add a crucial third goal.

UEFA Champions League: Semi-final spot in sight as Liverpool thrash Benfica 3-1

Manchester City have a slender lead from the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final after Kevin De Bruyne's 70th-minute goal earned them a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

It was a result City had to eek out against an Atletico side who had clearly travelled to England with the aim of simply denying Pep Guardiola's side opportunities and who failed to produce a single shot on target.

Diego Simeone's outfit had frustrated City throughout the first half with their deep lying defending and reliance on only the occasional counter to threaten the hosts.

City rotated the ball with their usual expertise and made it difficult for Atletico to push out from their deep defensive formation, while never over-committing themselves.

But the Premier League champions were unable to turn their total dominance of possession into clear chances with Aymeric Laporte having one of the best opportunities after the break, but the defender's header from a corner was off target.

Atletico's rare breaks served as a reminder to City that they had to keep some discipline, although when the Spaniards did fashion an opening Marcos Llorente failed to test Ederson.

City kept their shape and moved the ball well but it took the introduction of substitute Phil Foden for the home side to find the missing ingredient.

Foden, who came on with Jack Grealish and Gabriel Jesus, drew three defenders towards him before splitting the Spanish rearguard with a perfectly weighted pass to De Bruyne who slotted past goalkeeper Jan Oblak with a side-foot finish.

De Bruyne then had space for another attempt on goal, which was well blocked by defender Stefan Savic's outstretched foot.

The second leg will be held at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid next Wednesday but before then City have a crucial clash at home to Premier League title rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

HARD TASK

De Bruyne said it had been difficult to break down a team playing with such numbers behind the ball.

"It's very hard. They played with almost five at the back and with five in midfield. I recommend anyone that says anything ... that they try playing against that on the training ground.

"We have to stay composed and don’t try to get into their action. It is the way they play. One-nil is one-nil. I expect similar over there. If the game is tight they will have to attack a little bit more," added the Belgian.

Guardiola was pleased with the way his side had approached the contest.

"We played an incredible top side who are difficult to face but it is a good result," he said, while praising his players for avoiding some of the potential flash-points in the game.

"It is not easy to face a team with a lot of experience in this tournament. We will go there to score and try and win again," he added.

Simeone was full of praise for City and said the first half display was largely due to Atletico`s opponents rather than his tactics.

Atletico Madrid knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League and moved into the quarter-finals after a 41st-minute header from Brazilian Renan Lodi gave them a 1-0 (2-1 aggregate) win at Old Trafford on Tuesday. It was a typical display of the kind of gritty defending and swift counter-attacking for which Diego Simeone`s Atletico side have been known while United, for all their pressure, were unable to create enough quality opportunities to get themselves the goal they needed.

United are left to focus on a Premier League campaign where they face a real battle to make the top four and earn a place in next year`s Champions League. The Spanish champions may not be favourites to reach the final in Paris on May 28 but none of the teams in the last eight will be hoping to be drawn against them.
After Saturday`s win over Tottenham Hotspur, inspired by a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick, there was a positive mood around Old Trafford and the night began brightly for United with Anthony Elanga forcing a fine reflex save out of Jan Oblak with a near post flick from a Bruno Fernandes cross.

United`s Spanish keeper David de Gea then produced an outstanding diving save to push wide a long range effort from Rodrigo De Paul. Joao Felix then had the ball in the net, tapping in a cross from Marcos Llorente but the effort was ruled out for offside.

There was no reprieve though for United, though, when after a trademark Atletico counter-attack, a clever flick from Joao Felix found Antoine Griezmann whose cross was nodded in at the back post by Lodi.
United argued that the move had followed a foul on Elanga deep in Atletico`s half but referee Slavko Vincic waved away their protests. Fernandes ended the half with a fierce shot that again tested Oblak to the full and raised hopes among the home support ahead of the second half. United, as expected, poured forward after the break in search of an equaliser but there was little design or craft to their attacks.

LACK OF CREATIVITY
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick threw on forwards as he sought the breakthrough bringing on Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani to play up front with Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.
But his decision to take off Fernandes in the 67th minute left the team short of creativity and their attacks were increasingly just one dimensional charges at the Atletico back-line.

Captain Harry Maguire was taken off, to cheers from the home support, as Rangnick threw on Spanish winger Juan Mata but the nearest United came to an equaliser was a fine header from Raphael Varane that had Oblak at full stretch. It was scrappy and at times cynical from Atletico in the latter stages but their disciplined defence held firm for the victory that sends them into the last eight.

"We want to go far in the competition and it`s incredible to still be in it. It`s important for us to still be in the Champions League in what`s an up-and-down season," said midfielder Koke. "For me, Jan Oblak is the best goalkeeper in the world. He`s shown it once again tonight." Rangnick was upset with the refereeing of the game but had few complaints about his team`s performance.

"I think we played a very good first half - exactly the way we wanted to play with a high energy level but we couldn`t convert that into one or two goals," he said. "Conceding that counter-attacking goal just before halftime didn`t make life any easier. It was hard in the second half and always interrupted. There was always somebody lying on the floor. "I would also say some curious refereeing decisions. I wouldn`t say they were decisive but at least he fell too often for those time-wasting antics."

Neymar has rubbished the reports of a dressing room bust-up with his Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma following the club's defeat against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. Real Madrid defeated PSG 3-1 in the second leg of their Round of 16 clash to dump the Ligue 1 giants out of the Champions League.

After Kylian Mbappe gave PSG the lead in the 39th minute, Karin Benzema bagged a sensational hat-trick for Real Madrid to take the Spanish club into the last 8 of the Champions League. Following PSG's defeat against Real, there were reports that Neymar and Donnarumma were involved in a heated altercation in the dressing room.

Reports stated that the duo had to be pulled apart by their teammates and was almost on the verge of exchanging blows in the dressing room while blaming each other for the defeat. However, Neymar took to Instagram to rubbish the rumours and said there was no fight inside the PSG dressing room.

As per reports, Neymar had blamed the PSG goalkeeper for giving away the ball for Real Madrid's opening goal in the second leg tie between the two clubs. Donnarumma, on the other hand, blamed Neymar for losing possession which led to Real Madrid's second goal in the game. Real had lost the first leg 1-0 but managed to progress 3-2 on aggregate.

Almost exactly five years to the day since Paris St Germain were hit for six and humiliated in Barcelona, it was more pain in Spain for the French champions, as they slipped out of the Champions League in all too familiar fashion. Approaching the hour mark of the return leg against Barcelona`s rivals Real Madrid in the last-16 on Wednesday, PSG looked primed to reach the quarter-finals, leading 1-0 on the night and 2-0 on aggregate.

Somehow, in a manner only PSG seem able to contrive to do, the star-studded visitors imploded - a capitulation of their own making - losing 3-1 on the night to crash out. "We made some mistakes, we can`t say we didn`t. The worst feeling is that we were the better side," coach Mauricio Pochettino told Canal+.
"The next few weeks are not going to be easy."

PSG have now been eliminated from four of their nine Champions League knockout ties when winning from the first leg, three of those coming in the previous six seasons. The 6-1 defeat to Barca in the Camp Nou on March 8, 2017 was their nadir. A stunning 4-0 win in Paris in the first leg had led many to tip PSG as eventual champions in 2016-17, only for one of the most famous comebacks in sporting history, completed by Sergi Roberto in the 95th minute, to end their European dreams.

A Marcus Rashford winner in the Parc des Princes two years later brought memories of the Nou Camp "remontada" flooding back as PSG, who had put Manchester United to the sword in the first leg at Old Trafford, fell at the last-16 hurdle following a limp second-leg showing again. Three weeks ago a brilliant Kylian Mbappe winner in Paris gave PSG the advantage coming into Wednesday`s rematch in Madrid, with fans believing a first Champions League title could finally be in the offing.

With the effervescent Mbappe causing more problems in the Bernabeu - scoring one stunning goal that was ruled out before making one count give PSG the lead - a last-eight spot was theirs to lose. They did just that as basic errors allowed Madrid in twice to level the score at 2-2 on aggregate.

Needing to regroup, PSG then saved their most catastrophic mistake until last as, from their own kick-off after Benzema`s second, they gave the ball away and let Real slice through them to earn a dramatic 3-1 win on the night. The winning goal came an astonishing 10 and a half seconds after the host`s previous strike.
Benzema became the oldest player to score a Champions League hat-trick but the night will be remembered more for what PSG did to themselves, again, than any of the Frenchman`s goalscoring exploits.

Deja vu for Lionel Messi-starrer PSG as they crumble again on big occasion with Real Madrid loss

Cristiano Ronaldo didn't feature in Manchester United's Premier League clash versus arch-rivals Manchester City on March 6. The 37-year-old Portugal captain's absence made heads turn as the Red Devils were thrased 4-1 by the Cityzens. It is being reported that the star Man United striker isn't keen on carrying on with the club if they fail to qualify for the Champions League by not finishing in the top four this season.

Thus, speculations are rife that Ronaldo could join his arch-rival Lionel Messi in Paris Saint Germain, as a replacement for France's striker Kylian Mbappe. For the unversed, the Parisians are all but set to lose superstar forward Mbappe to Real Madrid in the summer. Thus, the hunt for his replacement has already commenced and Ronaldo's name is also in consideration. Along with him, Man Utd's striker Marcus Rashford is also a contender to join PSG as Mbappe's replacement.

If all goes as per the reports, PSG could pull off the biggest casting coup by having both Ronaldo and Messi at their disposal. The two all-time greats have never shared a dressing room before and, hence, it will be a whopping news in the sporting fraternity. As per Football Transfers, Ronaldo is keen to make a shift from the Red Devils' camp if they fail to qualify for the Champions League as the veteran superstar footballer is eager to win one or more major honours before calling it quits.

While reports suggest that Ronaldo travelled back to Portugal and missed the Manchester Derby due to a hip injury, it is being said that the real reason behind his absence is to seek clarity on his future beyond this season.

Both Ronaldo and Rashford aren't getting much playing time in the Man United setup at present and, hence, PSG can pounce on this opportunity to add one of them in place of Mbappe.

Bayern Munich were at their clinical best as they blew RB Salzburg away in the UEFA Champions League round of 16-second leg on Tuesday, Robert Lewandowski scoring the first three of their seven goals.

If Bayern were somewhat subdued during their 1-1 draw in Austria in the first leg, they were anything but in this Munich return at Allianz Arena.

Lewandowski, not for the first time, spearheaded the goal glut for Julian Nagelsmann's men, converting two penalties after being felled by Maximilian Wober twice then blocking a clearance from goalkeeper Philipp Kohn and tapping in to seal a quickfire hat-trick inside 23 minutes.

Serge Gnabry all but rubber-stamped Bayern's place in the last eight with a fourth goal before half-time but there was no let-up after the break.

Thomas Muller gleefully helped himself to two goals, either side of Maurits Kjaergaard's excellent consolation, with Leroy Sana thumping in number seven late on - it was a record seventh time the Bavarian outfit had hit seven in a game in the competition.

European football's governing body UEFA has taken a firm stand against Russia amid the country's ongoing war with Ukraine and decided to move the Champions League final from St Petersburg to Paris. The final of the marquee football fixture was all set to be played at the Gazprom Arena in Russia’s second-largest city on May 28.

In the wake of the Russian military's invasion of Ukraine, UEFA had called for an emergency meeting of its executive committee on Friday. The UEFA has decided to strip Russia off the hosting rights of the Champions League final. The final will now be played on the scheduled date at the Stade de France in Paris.

UEFA also condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine and said it stands in “solidarity with the football community in Ukraine”. UEFA has also confirmed that Russian and Ukrainian clubs along with their national teams will play their matches at neutral venues in the UEFA competitions. Russian club Spartak Moscow is currently part of the ongoing Europa League.

UEFA calls extraordinary meeting to discuss situation in the wake of Russia-Ukraine crisis

Anthony Elanga`s 80th-minute goal gave Manchester United a 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie. The result flattered United, who did very little in the game played on Wednesday night, but at the same time, it was a punishment for Atletico for not taking chances and their tendency to defend a narrow lead.

The game was just seven minutes old when Atletico took the lead. United half-cleared a corner, but Renan Lodi whipped the ball back into the area for Joao Felix to race in ahead of Harry Maguire and head the ball past David de Gea and in off the post.

United were struggling to connect in attack, while Atletico looked threatening every time they pushed forward, although having taken the lead, they were content to sit deep and look to play on the break, reports Xinhua.

At the half-hour mark, De Gea was United`s saviour as he denied Angel Correa when the striker was through on goal after robbing Raphael Varane, who moments afterward again gave the ball away to Geoffrey Kondogbia.

As the session progressed, things got increasingly scrappy with Cristiano Ronaldo, booed every time he touched the ball, coming in for some rough treatment, before Sime Vrsaljko rattled the crossbar with a header when he should have scored following a cross from Lodi.

Any hopes that United would improve after half-time were soon dashed as they continued in the same vein that had seen them struggle in the first 45 minutes, with slack defending and too many misplaced passes.

Coach Ralf Rangnick finally reacted in the 67th minute with a triple substitution as Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba were replaced by Alex Telles, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Nemanja Matic.

The 19-year-old Elanga also came on for Marcus Rashford in the 76th minute, and he levelled the scores within four minutes. Bruno Fernandes found a rare gap in the Atletico defense and the youngster rolled the ball across Jan Oblak and into the back of the net.

It was his side`s first shot on target in the whole game, but was enough to give them a good result for the return leg in three weeks.

The UEFA Champions League returns with a blockbuster clash involving two of Europe's biggest clubs. Lionel Messi's Paris Saint Germain take on Real Madrid in the first leg of the Round of 16 tie. WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo sets up the match with Welsh Football coach Matt Holland.

UEFA Champions League: Paris Saint Germain vs Real Madrid Preview

UEFA had to redo the Champions League Round of 16 draw for the ongoing season on Monday after a series of errors in the initial draw. Lionel Messi's Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) could have been up against Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United as per the first draw which was later deemed void by UEFA after the European football's governing body realised its mistake. The draw took place again as the final list of Round of 16 fixtures were revealed.

What went wrong in the first draw?

The Champions League Round of 16 draw started with Real Madrid getting drawn against Benfica for the first tie. However, confusion prevailed after Manchester United were mistakenly paired up against Villarreal. United couldn't have faced Villarreal in the Round of 16 as both teams were in the same group.

The error was identified and corrected immediately as UEFA called for Villarreal to be drawn against Manchester City, who were the toppers of their respective group. Another error that went unnoticed in the first draw was when Manchester United's ball was not placed in the bowl to be drawn against Atletico Madrid.

United, who topped Group F, should have been in contention to face Atletico Madrid, however, the ball with their name was not picked. The error went unnoticed as United ended up drawing against PSG, however, UEFA realised its mistake and reconducted the draw just hours later.

The video of the substantial error went viral on social media with fans talking about the same as UEFA was quickly forced into action.

What did UEFA say?

UEFA was quick to release a statement on the matter and said there was a 'technical problem' due to the software of an external provider which led to the series of errors in the initial draw. Atletico Madrid had informed they took up the matter with UEFA following which the governing body's statement was released which also confirmed that the entire draw will be redone.

"Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone at 1500 CET," UEFA said in a statement.

Explained: Why was UEFA Champions League Round of 16 draw conducted twice?

Paris Saint-Germain will play Real Madrid while Liverpool take on Inter Milan in two of the standout ties in the last 16 of the Champions League after an embarrassed UEFA was forced to redo Monday's draw following a "technical problem".

PSG had initially been paired together with Manchester United but the reworked draw sees them play Real while the Old Trafford side will face Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

UEFA had earlier blamed a "material error" due to a "technical problem with the software of an external service provider" as it announced that the draw for the first knockout round of its flagship competition would have to be redone.

With the draw being streamed live from UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, the problem was made evident when Manchester United's name was drawn to face Villarreal, despite the fact the two clubs could not have played one another having been in the same group.

Record 13-time European champions Real are unlikely to be happy with the new draw as they had initially been paired with Benfica in the very first tie before the problems occurred a clash with the PSG of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe is, on paper, a far tougher tie.

Liverpool face a similar situation. Having initially been drawn against knockout-phase debutants Red Bull Salzburg of Austria, they now face three-time former winners Inter, the Serie A champions and current Italian league leaders.

Salzburg instead got Bayern Munich, while Manchester City take on Sporting Lisbon and Benfica will play Ajax.

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic is isolating after testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of their final Champions League group game at Zenit St Petersburg while four other players are out injured, manager Thomas Tuchel said on Tuesday.

Kovacic, who has five league assists, was back in contention for the first time since October after a thigh injury ruled the Croatia international out of Chelsea`s last eight games in all competitions.

"Mateo was in training yesterday with a big smile and (it)was pure pleasure to have him back, but he tested positive today for COVID-19 and is isolating," Tuchel told reporters ahead of Wednesday`s game.

"I was aware that this (more COVID-19 cases) could happen and I`m not happy about it, not only as a manager but as a person. But this is what reality is at the moment, so we have to be ready to adapt and secure people`s health."

Ben Chilwell, N`Golo Kante (both knee), Trevoh Chalobah (thigh) and Jorginho (back problem) are also ruled out for Wednesday`s game.

Kai Havertz limped off at halftime during their 3-2 Premier League defeat at West Ham United at the weekend, but the German was back in training on Tuesday.

Tuchel said Chelsea have "an acute overload" due to injuries and a hectic schedule, with the team due to play six more matches in all competitions this month after they return from Russia.

"Due to injuries in some positions, like central midfield, we struggle, but the game tomorrow is not a problem in terms of being overloaded," Tuchel added.

"The problem is the next match on Saturday (against Leeds United) because we will lose time to sleep, arrive back very early on Thursday... Then we face an intense team in Leeds who have prepared to play this match."

Chelsea have already qualified for the Champions League`s knockout stages and are tied on 12 points with Juventus at the top of Group H. The London club can finish as group leaders if they match or better Juventus` result against Malmo.

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals, including a breathtaking stoppage-time equaliser against Atalanta on Tuesday night to claim a vital point for his side in the UEFA Champions League. After Atalanta took a 12th-minute lead, the forward helped his side to produce an equaliser after a clever back-heeled assist by Bruno Fernandes a minute into first-half stoppage time. He said, "We all have our roles and responsibilities. Of course, Cristiano is a leader in the group but that's what he does, he scores goals. We're not happy conceding two goals ... But he (Ronaldo) does provide those moments and I'm sure the Chicago Bulls didn't mind having Michael Jordan either." "Sometimes teams have the players they have and that's why they are Man United, that's why they are champions at the Chicago Bulls. You just come up with those moments," Ole added. Ronaldo, who returned to the club in the summer, has scored nine goals in all competitions this season, five of those in the Champions League.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said the defensive issues on display against Brentford are not too much of a concern but they do not want to repeat those mistakes in Tuesday`s Champions League group game at Porto.

Klopp`s side came from a goal behind on Saturday to lead twice in an end-to-end match but conceded an 83rd-minute equalizer as Brentford secured a 3-3 draw.

"It`s not that much of a concern, but we have to show a reaction. It`s tricky to win a game when you aren`t defending on your highest level and that`s what we didn`t do," Klopp told reporters on Monday.

"It wasn`t just the last line. In general, we had a problem with defending. Porto is a different team but we have to improve in that department.

"We spoke about it and know we cannot (defend) like that and we sorted that and have to show that tomorrow."
Liverpool have had the upper hand against Porto in recent meetings, winning 5-0 and 4-1 on their last two visits to the Estadio do Dragao in 2018 and 2019.

Klopp, however, insisted his team is not dwelling on the history between the sides. "It`s not an advantage to have won the last two games there," Klopp said.

"We don`t count on points we don`t have already, it`s a tough group so we should not waste time to get points. Atletico (Madrid) v Porto was a tough one and if someone deserved to win it, it was Porto, so that says a lot.

"Last time we came back, we didn`t think about the 5-0 before it because it makes no sense. We are here often enough to know we cannot win a game before we play so that is it."

Klopp said midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Harvey Elliott remain sidelined but there were no new injury concerns, with Naby Keita back in training after recovering from a foot injury.

Champions League: Liverpool fixing defensive problems ahead of Porto test, says Jurgen Klopp

Two goals from Robert Lewandowski and one from Thomas Mueller propelled Bayern Munich to a 3-0 win at Barcelona in their opening Champions League game on Tuesday in another brutal demonstration of the gulf in class between the two sides.

Mueller gave Bayern the lead in the 34th minute of the Group E clash with a strike from outside the area which deflected off Barca defender Eric Garcia to confound goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Lewandowski struck the German champions` second in the 54th, tapping into the net from close range on the rebound after Jamal Musiala had hit the post as Bayern made a rampant start following the interval, hemming their hosts into their own half.

The Polish striker twisted the knife further into Barcelona by scoring again in the 85th, collecting the ball in the area after another shot had come back off the post and tormenting the defence before calmly beating Ter Stegen.

The scoreline was not quite as damning for Barca as the 8-2 drubbing Bayern gave them in the quarter-finals two seasons ago but the performance was just as hopeless as they were routinely dispossessed and struggled to cope with the visitors` intensity.

"I can`t complain about the team`s attitude but there`s a big difference in quality between the two teams," said Barca coach Ronald Koeman.

"They`re a team that has been playing together for a long time and they were even stronger when they brought players off the bench. We have a lot of young players who will get better in the next two or three years.

"It`s very difficult to accept but I hope things improve once we get players back from injury."

While Barca despaired at their inferiority, Bayern revelled in another dominant performance against the Catalans, who they also hammered 3-0 at the Camp Nou in the 2013 semi-finals.

"It`s a lot of fun playing here, the boys enjoyed it," Mueller said.

"When you win 3-0 here, it`s a really important signal. We`re really pleased. We gave very little away at the back and going forward, we could have scored one or two more."

Barca made a promising start in their first Champions League game in front of supporters at the Camp Nou since December 2019, although while the crowd was limited to 40,000 due to coronavirus restrictions there were fewer fans in attendance owing to a lack of appetite for the post-Lionel Messi era.

BAYERN SUPERIORITY

But Bayern soon showed their superiority and it took a strong hand from Ter Stegen to prevent Leroy Sane giving the Germans the lead, while Gerard Pique had to slide across the ground to block a goal-bound strike from Musiala.

Barcelona`s only real attempt on goal in the first half came from a free kick, defender Ronald Araujo meeting Memphis Depay`s cross and heading just over the bar.

Bayern finally took the lead their play merited through Mueller, who scored twice in the 8-2 hammering of Barca in Lisbon and has now netted seven times against the Catalans in Europe`s top competition.

Loud boos could be heard at halftime but things got more desperate for the hosts after the break and by the end of the game Barca fans were sarcastically applauding the team whenever they managed to recover the ball, resigned to their fate.

Pique also had a tone of resignation as he reflected on the defeat.

"We are what we are, I`m sure we`re going to compete again later in the season even though it`s going to be a difficult year," he said.

"Overall I think the scoreline was a bit unfair but we cannot kid ourselves, they were far better than us."

Two goals from Robert Lewandowski and one from Thomas Mueller propelled Bayern Munich to a 3-0 win at Barcelona in their opening Champions League game on Tuesday in another brutal demonstration of the gulf in class between the two sides.
