After Twitter takeover, Musk asks managers to name employees to be laid off, plans to reform content policies

As top executives of Twitter pack their bags in the wake of Elon Musk's takeover, there are reports that the micro-blogging site’s co-founder Jack Dorsey is testing another social network app rivalling the blue bird.

According to People, a week before Musk finalised his acquisition deal, the 45-year-old former CEO released a press release stating that he is seeking beta testers for his decentralized social app Bluesky.

"The next step is to start testing the protocol. Distributed protocol development is a tricky process," the company shared in a news release last Tuesday.

"It requires coordination from many parties once a network is deployed, so we're going to start in private beta to iron out issues."

"As we beta test, we'll continue to iterate on the protocol specs and share details about how it works. When it's ready, we'll move to the open beta," the company’s statement said, sharing a link to sign up for the beta test's waitlist.

In the press release, the company said that the new app will use an Authenticated Transfer Protocol (AT Protocol), which is a federated social network run by multiple sites instead of a single site.

"The word 'Bluesky' evokes a wide-open space of possibility. It was the original name for this project before it took shape, and continues to be the name of our company," the release stated. "We're calling the application we're building Bluesky because it will be a portal to the world of possibility on top of the AT Protocol," it said.

Last week, Dorsey in his Twitter post said that Bluesky will act as "a competitor to any company trying to own the underlying fundamentals for social media or the data of the people using it"

A day after tech tycoon Elon Musk purchased Twitter in a $44 billion deal, rapper Kanye West's account, which had been taken down for tweeting anti-Semitic comments, appeared to be back up. Last month, Twitter and Instagram from Meta Platforms suspended the rapper, now going by the name Ye, and they also took down some of his online content that fans had deemed anti-Semitic. Ye, who has more than 30 million Twitter followers, has courted controversy in recent months by publicly terminating significant corporate partnerships and making outbursts against other celebrities on social media. Musk wrote "Welcome back to Twitter, my friend!" on October 8 when Ye published on the site for the first time in two years following the restriction of his Instagram account. Musk took control of Twitter on Thursday with ruthless efficiency, sacking top executives but offering no explanation of how he plans to realise the goals he has set for the important social media company. Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla Inc. and who calls himself an ardent supporter of free expression, has set out objectives to stop the platform from turning into a forum for hatred and division. On Friday, Trump expressed his satisfaction that Twitter was in "sane hands". Ye made a preliminary agreement to purchase Parler, the social media site favoured by American conservatives, earlier in October. (with inputs from agencies)

As Musk takes over, EU and India warn Twitter to play by rules of the land

Just a few hours after Elon Musk launched a new era at Twitter Inc., the billionaire owner received a barrage of requests and pleadings from users with banned accounts and international leaders.

The influx of requests highlights the difficulty facing Tesla Inc.'s CEO in combining his commitment to restore free speech with his pledge to stop the platform from turning into a "hellscape" in an open letter to advertisers on Thursday.

Musk announced that he plans to set up a “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints” at Twitter after taking over the social media company, stressing that no changes to the platform’s moderation policies have been made so far.

“No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes,” the billionaire businessman said.

The takeover was hailed, but former US President Donald Trump, who was permanently banned from Twitter following the riots on January 6, 2021, said little about making a comeback. “I'm relieved that Twitter is finally being governed by rational people and is no longer being controlled by radical leftist lunatics and maniacs who genuinely despise our nation,” Trump said.

Former Russian President and current Vice-Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev tweeted his congratulations: "Good luck @elonmusk in overcoming political bias and ideological dictatorship on Twitter. And quit that Starlink in Ukraine business."

Others begged Musk to undo punishments meted out by the social networking site.

Musk tweeted, "I will be digging in more today," in response to @catturd2, an anonymous account with 852,000 followers who is well-known for strongly endorsing Trump's claims of election fraud.

Margarita Simonyan, the head of the state-run RT channel in Russia, pleaded with Musk to "unban RT and Sputnik accounts and take the shadow ban off mine as well?"
