The 2026 US midterm elections are drawing closer, putting the Trump administration’s economic record under renewed scrutiny. With control of Congress at stake on November 3, issues such as trade, jobs, prices and the health of key industries are likely to remain central to the political debate. Against this backdrop, President Donald Trump’s latest meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping could have significance beyond foreign policy. Their summit produced agreements on agricultural trade, US coal purchases and artificial intelligence cooperation, while extending a broader trade truce. But the deal leaves several major US-China disputes unresolved, raising questions about how much it can deliver before the midterms.
China enters the US midterm conversation
For American farmers, China’s role is particularly important. Beijing is a major market for US agricultural products, and the trade war has repeatedly disrupted that relationship.Following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington, the two countries agreed to pursue tariff reductions covering about $30 billion of goods each. China’s list includes American corn, wheat, sorghum, meat, dairy products, vegetable oils and meals. That gives the Trump administration an economic development to highlight as the November 3 midterms approach, particularly in farm-heavy states. But there is an important omission: US soybeans were not included. Soybeans were worth about $16.2 billion in US exports to China in 2025 and remain one of the most politically sensitive agricultural products in the relationship.
Trade truce gets more time, not a final deal
The summit also produced a two-month extension of the existing US-China trade truce, taking it through January 10.The extension prevents an immediate return to higher tariffs and gives negotiators more time to work through unresolved issues. But it is not a permanent trade settlement. The two countries have also agreed to continue discussions through the US-China Board of Trade. That distinction matters. American businesses and farmers get additional breathing room, but uncertainty over the longer-term tariff regime remains.
Coal gives US industry another win
Agriculture was not the only US sector to gain from the summit.China agreed to import 10 million metric tonnes of US coal each year in 2027 and 2028. Beijing described the purchases as beneficial to the US coal industry by supporting income and employment. The volume is substantial for US coal producers but relatively small compared with China's overall coal imports – around 2 per cent of its annual imports, according to Reuters.
AI cooperation without ending the rivalry
The two governments also agreed to establish a communication channel for AI-related incidents and hold a follow-up dialogue by the end of November. That is cooperation, but it should not be confused with an end to the technology rivalry. Washington and Beijing remain competitors over advanced technology, while Trump has stressed that the US intends to maintain its lead in AI.
What remains unresolved
The summit therefore produced a collection of working arrangements rather than a sweeping reset.Soybean access remains an issue. The broader tariff dispute has only been paused. Strategic sectors such as semiconductors remain outside the tariff arrangement, while disagreements over technology, Taiwan and wider geopolitical competition continue. For the White House, the timing is notable. The summit has produced commitments involving American farmers, coal producers and other exporters that can be discussed on the campaign trail. But whether those measures translate into meaningful economic gains for voters before November remains dependent on implementation – and on whether Washington and Beijing can turn the temporary truce into something more durable.

US midterm elections 2026: Is China a factor? What Trump-Xi trade truce settled, and what it didn’t

China and the United States have agreed to a reciprocal tariff-reduction arrangement covering $30 billion worth of goods and will launch a new dialogue on artificial intelligence, Beijing said on Saturday (Sep 26). This comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit to Washington, during which he held talks with US President Donald Trump. The agreements formed part of an eight-point consensus reached during Xi’s meetings with US President Donald Trump, as the world’s two largest economies seek to stabilise ties after months of trade tensions.
Trade takes centre stage
According to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two sides endorsed the work of their economic teams and agreed to establish a trade council alongside the tariff-reduction arrangement. The deal covers $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction, according to a White House fact sheet released after the summit. The two countries also agreed to build on outcomes from their earlier talks in Kuala Lumpur.Washington and Beijing had already agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months, pushing the deadline beyond November 10 and giving negotiators more time to work towards a broader agreement, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. The summit ended with several mechanisms for continued engagement, although the leaders did not announce a sweeping new trade deal.
AI gets a new channel
Artificial intelligence emerged as another area where Washington and Beijing agreed to maintain direct communication. The two sides will establish a dialogue covering the risks and benefits of advanced AI technologies, with the next round scheduled for November. They will also create a communication channel for AI-related incidents.Xi said China and the US had “more reasons to cooperate than compete” on AI, arguing that both countries should exchange views on risks and work to prevent misuse and abuse of the technology.
Iran, global summits also discussed
The leaders also discussed foreign policy, agreeing that Iran should uphold its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons. They said no country or entity should impose tolls on international waterways.Washington and Beijing also agreed to support each other as hosts of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting and G20 summit, with both leaders signalling plans to attend the gatherings hosted by the other. The two sides further recalled that China and the United States fought as allies during World War Two, adding a historical note to a summit focused largely on managing their modern rivalry.

China, US strike $30 billion tariff deal, agree to launch AI dialogue

The Trump-Xi summit looks like a grand diplomatic breakthrough. But strip away the red carpets, military pageantry and carefully choreographed handshakes, and the substance is remarkably negligible.Yes, the two sides have extended their trade truce by another two months. But this is not a new settlement. It's essentially a pause, even as the hard questions remain. Tariffs, Chinese weapons supply to Iran, rare-earth supplies, technology restrictions and market access. The optics are bigger than the outcomes. There was no major breakthrough on Taiwan. Xi drew the red line, Trump has not budged from America's relationship with Taiwan. No substantive agreement on AI either, despite the world's top tech CEOs present at the White House state banquet. Xi says AI must remain under human control, while Trump has dismissed AI safety concerns as fake.No resolution over Iran, even though Trump wants China to convince Iran on a peace deal.Essentially, no durable framework that fundamentally changes the trajectory of U.S.-China strategic competition has been agreed upon.In other words, this was less a summit that solved problems than a summit that managed them. And that brings me to what is called the Thucydides Trap. Xi himself invoked the concept in May this year. The idea that when a rising power challenges an established power, fear, insecurity and competition can lead to a clash. The irony is that both leaders can publicly call for stability while simultaneously competing across trade, technology, military power and geopolitics. So beyond the camera lights and press statements, the fundamental U.S.-China rivalry remains.

‘Both will lose in confrontation’: Xi says US and China should ‘coexist in peace’

US President Donald Trump’s decision to greet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday (Sep 23) quickly became a talking point, but not only because of the diplomatic significance of the visit. Trump appeared at the Maryland military base wearing a heavy winter coat and leather gloves as Xi arrived for his US visit. The temperature was around 64-65 degrees Fahrenheit (about 18 degrees Celsius), prompting social media users to question the unusual choice of attire.

A break from usual protocol
The elaborate tarmac welcome also marked a departure from the more restrained protocol generally used for leaders of major US rivals.Trump has previously opted for highly visible welcomes, including during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 2025 visit to Alaska, when a red carpet was rolled out for him.Former President Joe Biden, meanwhile, greeted Xi in San Francisco in 2024 after the Chinese leader arrived at the location of their summit. That meeting also featured a military guard and red carpet, but not at the airport tarmac.
Trade tensions shadow Xi’s visit
Xi’s visit comes amid continuing disputes between Washington and Beijing over trade, artificial intelligence and semiconductors. Trump has faced criticism from some domestic opponents over his approach towards China.Ahead of Xi’s arrival, a Republican senator who is generally aligned with the White House also criticised what was described as a “lavish” welcome for the Chinese president.

US President Donald Trump’s decision to greet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday (Sep 23) quickly became a talking point, but not only because of the diplomatic significance of the visit. A US Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft conducted a transit through the Taiwan Strait on Friday, drawing close attention from China as Washington and Beijing prepare for a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The US 7th Fleet said the aircraft operated in international airspace and described the mission as demonstrating Washington’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and freedom of navigation under international law.

China closely monitored the aircraft during the transit. Beijing has repeatedly objected to US military activity in the Taiwan Strait and considers Taiwan a core national interest.

The latest US Navy operation comes amid ongoing US-China tensions over Taiwan, trade, technology restrictions and artificial intelligence, even as both countries seek to stabilize relations.

The earlier truce had paused an intense trade war between the two economic powers, during which tariffs on several products climbed above 100 per cent. Trade conditions have since changed. Washington continued to maintain some tariffs linked to allegations surrounding China’s role in fentanyl supply chains and claims of unfair trade practices. In February, the US Supreme Court struck down several Trump-era duties, including measures tied to drug trafficking concerns. The White House later introduced a temporary 10-percent global tariff while pursuing investigations that could result in permanent duties. https://www.wionews.com/videos/wifi-willpower-gaza-s-online-workers-push-through-adversity-1778868974175/embed The temporary tariff policy is also facing legal challenges in US courts. Trump arrived in Beijing earlier this week, aiming to secure agreements in sectors including agriculture, aviation, and artificial intelligence. After the first day of meetings, Trump claimed Xi had agreed to support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and increase Chinese purchases of Boeing aircraft, American oil, and soybeans. However, no formal agreements have been announced, and China’s foreign ministry declined to confirm Trump’s statements during a press briefing on Friday.

At the Trump-Xi summit in Beijing, US President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping offered to help broker peace with Iran amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The discussions reportedly focused on regional stability, the Strait of Hormuz, and concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Trump-Xi Summit: Trump Says Xi Offered To Help Broker Peace With Iran

Donald Trump cleverly blamed Joe Biden for the critical things Xi Jinping said about the United States, while carefully highlighting that the Chinese president praised him for his work. In a Truth Social post, he wrote, "When President Xi very elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation, he was referring to the tremendous damage we suffered during the four years of Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration." The 79-year-old, who is in on an official visit to China, added that it was "100% correct". Trump claimed, "President Xi was not referring to the incredible rise that the United States has displayed to the world during the 16 spectacular months of the Trump Administration." The American president said that the US had become the "hottest nation" under him. "Two years ago, we were, in fact, a Nation in decline. On that, I fully agree with President Xi! But now, the United States is the hottest Nation anywhere in the world, and hopefully our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever before!"Also Read: Trump-Xi meet marred by day of altercations: US media and Chinese security officers clash at Temple of Heaven - VIDEO Trump's post listed the things that he claimed suffered under Biden's presidency - "open borders, high taxes, transgender for everybody, men in women’s sports, DEI, horrible trade deals, rampant crime, and so much more!" Heaping praise on his own administration, Trump said the country had witnessed an "incredible rise" and had the "strongest military on earth". He wrote, the country had witnessed "all-time high stock markets and 401K’s, military victory and thriving relationship in Venezuela, the military decimation of Iran (to be continued!)" under him. Trump said, US had become an "economic powerhouse again" and had the "best US job market in history", and that "President Xi congratulated me on so many tremendous successes in such a short period of time."

Trump's tea and lunch meeting on final day of visit
Donald Trump is on a three-day visit to China, where he held a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping on Thursday. The two leaders held further talks over tea and a "working lunch" on the final day on Friday. Trump claimed that he and Xi had "settled a lot of different problems that other people wouldn't have been able to solve" during the US president's state visit. He said that they talked about the Iran war and that they "feel very similar about [how] we want it to end, we don't want them [Iran] to have a nuclear weapon".

Donald Trump patted himself on the back for the “incredible rise" of the US under him in the past 16 months. He said Xi Jinping meant Biden, not him, when he said that the US was a declining nation. He added that the US was the “hottest Nation anywhere in the world”.

The 79-year-old, who is in on an official visit to China, added that it was "100% correct". But now, the United States is the hottest Nation anywhere in the world, and hopefully our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever before!" Heaping praise on his own administration, Trump said the country had witnessed an "incredible rise" and had the "strongest military on earth".

Donald Trump patted himself on the back for the “incredible rise" of the US under him in the past 16 months. He said Xi Jinping meant Biden, not him, when he said that the US was a declining nation. He added that the US was the “hottest Nation anywhere in the world”.

Trump-Xi Summit: Wall Street hits record highs as tech and AI stocks power markets

The Trump-Xi summit takes place amid escalating global tensions, with Iran, Taiwan, and the Strait of Hormuz dominating high-level discussions between Washington and Beijing. Both sides addressed concerns over maritime security, regional stability, trade, and strategic rivalry as geopolitical pressure intensifies across the Indo-Pacific and Middle East. The meeting also highlighted growing fears of wider global conflict and the fragile balance between cooperation and confrontation between the world’s two largest powers.

China, US Navigate Growing Global Tensions: Iran, Taiwan And Hormuz Dominate Summit

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held high-stakes talks in Beijing on Thursday (May 14). Following their “extremely positive” meeting, the US and China released their official statements on the views exchanged during the key discussions. While both hailed the meeting between the two leaders, they omitted the mention of certain claims made by each other. The summit comes amid heightened tensions over Iran and Taiwan, which remained one of the key focus points in the talks, along with trade tensions.
White House on Iran
In an official statement following the Trump-Xi talks, the White House said that the two leaders had a “good meeting”. Speaking of Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the statement read that the two sides agreed that the strait must remain open to support the free flow of energy. It added that Xi also emphasised China’s opposition to the militarisation of the strategic waterway and any tolls. According to the US statement, Xi also expressed interest in buying American oil. Both nations also agreed that Iran can never have nuclear weapons.“The two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy. President Xi also made clear China's opposition to the militarization of the Strait and any effort to charge a toll for its use, and he expressed interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce China's dependence on the Strait in the future. Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the White House said.
China’s statement on Iran
Interestingly, China’s statement did not focus on Iran or even mention the country’s name in its official statement released by the foreign ministry. It also omitted any mention of the Strait of Hormuz or nukes. The lengthy statement talked about strengthening relations between the US and China in various sectors and fronts, from trade to diplomacy to military. The only slight mention of the conflict in the Middle East was that “the two presidents exchanged views on major international and regional issues, such as the Middle East situation, the Ukraine crisis, and the Korean Peninsula.”Later in the day, Trump claimed that Xi had offered China’s help to open the Strait of Hormuz as tensions continued in the Gulf region. He added that Xi has vowed not to send military equipment to aid Iran in its war against the US and Israel.“He said he's not going to give military equipment… he said that strongly,” Trump told the “Hannity” show on Fox News, following the talks between the two leaders in Beijing.“He’d like to see the Hormuz Strait open, and said ‘if I can be of any help whatsoever, I would like to help,’” Trump added.
‘Most important issue’ or not?
In an unusual move, Xi gave a blunt warning to Trump over Taiwan in Thursday’s summit in Beijing, warning of a possible fallout between the two nations if the issue is not handled properly. According to the statement released by the Chinese foreign ministry, Xi stressed that Taiwan remains the “most important issue” between the US and China. China even warned the US to exercise “extra caution in handling the Taiwan question”, threatening clashes and conflicts. However, the United States probably doesn’t believe so, as it completely decided to skip the mention of Taiwan in its statements.“President Xi stressed that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy. ‘Taiwan independence’ and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the US. The US side must exercise extra caution in handling the Taiwan question,” the statement released by the Chinese foreign ministry read.Since arriving in Beijing, Trump has not mentioned Taiwan even once and has even ignored multiple questions from reporters on the subject. The White House also decided to omit its mention.Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent jumped to his rescue, saying that Trump would speak more on Taiwan “in the coming days.”“It wouldn’t be a US-China summit without the Taiwan issue coming up,” Bessent, who is with Trump in China, told US business news network CNBC. He added, “I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from him in the coming days.”“President Trump understands the issues here and understands the sensitivities around all this. Anyone who has been saying otherwise does not understand the negotiating style of Donald Trump,” Bessant said.

Although there was no such mention in the Chinese statement. “President Xi also made clear China's opposition to the militarisation of the Strait and any effort to charge a toll for its use, and he expressed interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce China's dependence on the Strait in the future. Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the White House statement read. Following the talks, Trump called the meeting “extremely positive”, describing the evening ahead as “another cherished opportunity to discuss among friends”. Xi hailed the US President’s visit as “historic”, saying that the United States and China “should be partners” and not “rivals”.
Another moment of unfiltered Musk
Musk once again went viral but for a completely unrelated reason. Images of Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook smiling and reacting mid-photo together quickly trended across social media platforms. On one side was Tim Cook, and on the other side was a hostess who was serving him. Musk could be seen making eye gestures and animated facial expressions next to a Chinese hostess, which appeared as if he was leering. Some loved his gestures and expressions, while others commented that it was amusing to know that the richest man in the world could also be so non-serious.
