A Chinese military officer has gone viral on the internet for remaining completely still as US President Donald Trump’s Air Force One passed near him when he arrived in Beijing on Wednesday (May 13). The video has been reshared by several people on social media as people give different reactions, shocked at the officer’s calm composure even as the huge Boeing aircraft roars right beside him. While several users credited the officer’s military training for remaining completely still, others questioned whether it was risky, and he could have been sucked by the plane’s engine. Some even suggested that the Air Force One was, in fact, not as close as it appears in the video, suggesting it was not risky at all.

Beijing fires sharp warning at US over Taiwan before pivotal Trump-Xi summit

As Donald Trump prepares for his closely watched visit to China, residents across Beijing and other cities are expressing mixed reactions. Some hope the visit could ease tensions between Washington and Beijing and improve economic ties, while others remain skeptical amid ongoing disputes over trade, Taiwan and technology restrictions. Trump’s trip is expected to include high-level meetings with Xi Jinping and could shape the future of US-China relations.

Will Trump Choose Xi's Favour Or Taiwan's Defence During Beijing Summit?

As US President Donald Trump prepares for a closely watched summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, diplomats and analysts are increasingly concerned that even a slight shift in language on Taiwan could trigger major geopolitical consequences. Trump has described the upcoming talks as “potentially historic”, but allies of Washington fear the meeting could become historic for another reason.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to diplomats from Asian and European countries, there is anxiety that Trump’s unpredictable style and tendency for unscripted remarks may inadvertently weaken decades of carefully balanced US policy on Taiwan.&nbsp;“It will be a great success for Xi to make Trump say something good for China in public like ‘I support peaceful unification’ or ‘I oppose the independence of Taiwan,’” one Asian diplomat told Politico. “Trump is Trump, off script all the time. According to diplomats from Asian and European countries, there is anxiety that Trump’s unpredictable style and tendency for unscripted remarks may inadvertently weaken decades of carefully balanced US policy on Taiwan. “It will be a great success for Xi to make Trump say something good for China in public like ‘I support peaceful unification’ or ‘I oppose the independence of Taiwan,’” one Asian diplomat told Politico. “Trump is Trump, off script all the time. Let’s pray nothing disastrous happens,” they added. Also read: Trump to meet Xi Jinping: Who will accompany US president and who won't The US has long maintained a policy of recognising Taiwan as distinct from mainland China while avoiding explicit support for Taiwanese independence. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly warned that any formal backing for independence could provoke war. China experts believe Beijing may try to push Trump into altering a key phrase in longstanding US policy. Analysts say changing the wording from “we do not support Taiwan independence” to “we oppose Taiwan independence” would carry major strategic implications. ‘Trump doesn’t operate with that level of precision’ Jonathan Czin, a former CIA China analyst now with the Brookings Institution, said the distinction may sound minor but could significantly alter diplomatic interpretations. “Trump doesn’t operate with that level of precision,” he warned. Officials close to the White House told reporters that advisers are urging Trump to avoid any deviation from established Taiwan policy. One source said briefing materials are focused on preserving the status quo and minimising discussion of Taiwan during the summit. Diplomats fear President Trump’s unscripted style during his summit with Xi Jinping could inadvertently alter long-standing US policy on Taiwan, potentially trading concessions for Chinese cooperation on global security.

Trump to meet Xi Jinping: Will there be straight talk on Taiwan? This is what we know

The United States and China are close to agreement on the first phase of a trade deal, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/united-states-china-hold-trade-talks-on-phone-discuss-mutual-issues-264506">US&nbsp;President Donald Trump</a> said on Tuesday, after top negotiators from the two countries spoke by telephone and agreed to keep working on remaining issues.

Trump said Washington was in the "final throes" of work on a deal that would defuse a 16-month trade war with Beijing, but also underscored Washington's support for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/want-to-work-out-preliminary-trade-deal-with-united-states-not-afraid-of-retaliating-chinese-president-jinping-263827">protesters in Hong Kong</a>, a potential huge sore point with China.

China said it had summoned US&nbsp;Ambassador Terry Branstad on Monday to protest the passage in the US&nbsp;Congress of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, saying the bill amounted to interference in a Chinese internal matter.

"We're in the final throes of a very important deal, I guess you could say one of the most important deals in trade ever. It's going very well but at the same time we want to see it go well in Hong Kong," Trump told reporters at the White House.

He said had a very good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and expected him to ensure a positive outcome in the Chinese-ruled city of Hong Kong, where pro-democracy parties won almost 90 per cent of 452 district council seats in Sunday's elections.

"I think that President Xi can make that happen. I know him and I know he'd like to make it happen," Trump said, without elaborating on what exactly he expected Xi to do.

Trump's upbeat comments about the trade talks lifted markets, with Wall Street's three major indexes hitting all-time highs on Tuesday.

His remarks followed a telephone call on Tuesday by US&nbsp;Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin with Chinese Vice Premier Liu that was disclosed by China's Commerce Ministry.

It said the negotiators discussed core issues related to the phase one deal and reached "a common understanding on resolving relevant problems."

Completion of a phase one deal had been expected in November, but trade experts and people close to the White House said last week it could slide into the new year, given China's pressure for more extensive tariff rollbacks.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told Fox News the United States and China were "getting really close" on a "phase one" trade deal. She said Trump wanted to "do this in phases, in interim pieces because it's such a large, historic trade deal."

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, told reporters on Tuesday that he believed the initial deal with China could be done before year-end.

He said China had invited Lighthizer and Mnuchnin to visit Beijing for in-person talks and they were willing to go if they saw "a real chance of getting a final agreement."

The US&nbsp;trade representative and the Treasury did not respond to requests for comment. A source familiar with the trade talks said the US&nbsp;officials could go to Beijing after Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday.

Cabinet-level officials, led by Liu, who is Xi's top economic adviser, and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, met in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House on Wednesday with only a month left to reach a deal.

Details of the closed-door talks were scant with official statements seen as unlikely before they conclude on Thursday. A spokeswoman for the trade representative's office declined comment on the discussions.

The talks began two days after the United States charged Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, with conspiring to violate US sanctions on Iran by doing business through a subsidiary it tried to hide.

Meng was arrested in Canada on December 1st at the request of the United States, which is seeking to have her extradited. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross have insisted there is no link between the trade talks and the Huawei case.

No final trade deal until I meet President Xi: Trump

The summit between President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Argentina was "<a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/china-envoy-warns-of-dire-consequences-if-us-hardliners-hold-sway-179861">friendly and candid</a>" and would help to avoid further trade tensions, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Thursday, but offered no new details on the talks.

The two leaders held high stakes discussions on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Buenos Aires last week and agreed to a ceasefire in their trade war.

State Councillor Wang Yi, the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/china-pumps-109-billion-into-economy-as-trade-war-bites-on-growth-170027">Chinese government</a>'s top diplomat, said the talks about trade frictions had been extremely positive and constructive, helping reach a consensus that worked for both China and the United States.

Xi and Trump had "deep exchanges in a friendly and candid atmosphere", setting the direction for an appropriate resolution to the problems between the two countries, Wang said, in a statement carried on the foreign ministry's website.

"The two sides agreed to jointly promote Sino-US relations based on coordination, cooperation and stability, and promote exchanges and cooperation in various fields in the two countries to achieve even more results," he added.

"The discussions on economic and trade issues between the two sides were very positive and constructive, and reached a principled consensus."

That consensus included preventing trade frictions from spreading, returning to dialogue to resolve issues, and a joint goal of cooperation to benefit the global economy, Wang said.

"All of these help to safeguard China's legitimate interests, and are also in the interests of the United States, and even more are in line with the expectations of the international community," he added.

The two countries have hit each other with tit-for-tariffs on goods worth hundreds of billions of dollars in sectors from automobiles to agriculture and energy, stymying trade and redrawing global supply chains.

The United States has levied additional duties of between 10 per cent and 25 per cent on $250 billion of Chinese goods this year as punishment for what it calls China's unfair trade practices. China has responded with its own tariffs.

But as part of the truce agreed to by Xi and Trump, the United States will not raise tariffs further on Jan. 1, so further talks can take place.

Wang said the facts will prove that the common interests between China and the United States are greater than our differences, and cooperation needs to be greater than friction.

However, he offered no new details on what China had agreed to with the United States.

China hails Trump-Xi summit, but offers no new details

China's commerce ministry said today <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/i-am-a-tariff-man-if-a-fair-deal-is-made-with-china-i-will-happily-sign-trump-181512">that it will "immediately" implement</a> measures agreed upon by President Xi and Trump which would give negotiators the 90-day period to resolve all other issues.

"China will immediately implement the consensus both sides already reached on agricultural products, energy, autos and other specific items," commerce ministry spokesman Gao Feng said.

President Trump and Xi had reached a consensus during their talks in the G20 summit in Buenos Aries in Argentina calling for a freeze in further tariffs for the next three months.

"Teams from both sides are in contact and cooperating well, we are fully confident that we can reach an agreement in the coming 90 days," Gao said, adding,"the ultimate goal for the 90 days of talks is to remove all the increased tariffs."

President Trump had agreed not to raise the tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports to 25 per cent which were set to begin on January 1, leaving it the current 10 per cent level.

"During the previous exchanges between China and the US, we came to an initial consensus over agricultural products, energy and various other fields. In the next step we will continue negations over agricultural products, energy, industrial manufactured products, service, and other fields," the Chinese spokesperson said.

The White House has said China had committed to start buying more American products and lifting tariff and non-tariff barriers immediately. Trump had said earlier that China had agreed to roll back tariffs of 40 per cent on cars.&nbsp;

"We have a clear timeline and roadmap for the next 90 days in which both sides will work hard in joint efforts to reach a consensus that coincides with the interests of both sides' and their common demands, with intellectual property, capacity cooperation, market access and trade balance on the agenda."&nbsp;

China also promised to bring down the trade surplus, however, no real numbers have been put out yet by the commerce ministry.
