Beijing plans passage to South Asia through Nepal and Tibet

A plan to build a 'passageway' to South Asia through Tibet has been included in China's 14th five-year-plan, reported the state-run media. Xinhua said that Tibet "will be supported" to build än important passageway" opening to South Asia. Concrete plan about this project is not available and it is not yet clear where the "opening" of this passageway would be.

On Friday, Beijing unveiled its next five-year plan, pledging to lift annual research and development spending by more than 7% until 2025, highlighting a commitment to become self-sufficient as the country clashes with the United States and other countries over technology policy.

"We owe our achievements last year to the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core," Li said in an hour-long speech to over 5,000 delegates gathered in the Great Hall of the People, all of them inoculated against COVID-19 with a vaccine made by China's Sinopharm.

However, consumer spending remains constrained, investment growth lacks sustainability, and "the foundation for achieving our country's economic recovery needs to be further consolidated," he said in a speech that mentioned Xi 13 times.

Li set a growth target of more than 6% this year for the world's second-largest economy, seen to be easily achievable, defying expectations that China would refrain from setting a goal given global uncertainty caused by the pandemic.

China grew by 2.3% last year, its weakest in 44 years, but was still the only major economy to expand as it largely vanquished the domestic spread of the novel coronavirus that first emerged in the country in late 2019.

During Friday's parliamentary session, Beijing proposed legislation that would tighten its increasingly authoritarian grip on Hong Kong by making changes to the electoral committee that chooses the city's leader, giving it new power to nominate legislative candidates.

China to build 'passageway' to South Asia through Tibet

China has said that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) govt welcomes the UN high commissioner (for human rights Michelle Bachelet) to visit Xinjiang but she should not use this opportunity to engage in political operations to pressure the country.

Earlier, United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet had said that China is restricting the basic civil and political freedoms – including in Hong Kong – in the name of national security.

Activists and UN rights experts say at least one million Muslims are being detained in camps in the remote western region of Xinjiang. The activists and some Western politicians accuse China of using torture, forced labour and sterilisations.

China denies any human rights abuses in Xinjiang and says its camps provide vocational training and are needed to fight extremism.

“We also find it regrettable the High Commissioner made unsubstantiated accusations against China based on misinformation and political pressure,” China’s delegate Jiang Duan told the U.N. Human Rights Council.

"Issues of Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong are not in essence the so-called issues of human rights. Currently, people in Xinjiang and Tibet enjoy social stability, economic growth, national unity, religious cultural harmony, and cultural development and improvement in life. All ethnic groups enjoy wide-ranging freedoms. The door to Xinjiang is always open, and we welcome the high commissioner (for human rights Michelle Bachelet) to visit Xinjiang. Communication is kept up between the two sides, but the aim of the visit is to provide exchanges and cooperation rather than the so-called investigation based on 'guilty before proven.' We are firmly opposed to anyone using this to engage in political operations to pressure China'," China's delegation said.

Uighurs, Tibet and Hong Kong issues not in the essence of human rights: China

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday said that China's treatment of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang and Tibet is a "shining example" of the progress made by the country in terms of human rights progress.

According to AFP, at least one million Uighurs, along with other Muslim minorities remain in camps that are situated in the northwest region of Xinjiang. China is also accused of forcibly sterilising women, and forced labour among many things.

After initial reports about the camps became public, Beijing denied any such thing existed. Soon after, it defended the camps, claiming that these were "vocational training centres" that were aimed at curbing Islamic extremism in the region.

"Places inhabited by ethnic minorities, such as Xinjiang and Tibet, have stood out as shining examples of China's human rights progress," Wang said in Beijing while talking at a forum on US-China relations.

Wang is expected to address the UN's Human Rights Council session later on Monday. Other countries have criticised China's incarceration of minorities in Xinjiang. According to a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, Wang will "share China's philosophy, practice and experience in protecting human rights" during his speech.

Britain on Monday will call on United Nations to be granted access to the Xinjiang region of China, where excesses against Uighur Muslims have been reported.

Recently, Lobsang Sangay, the Prime Minister in Exile of Tibet spoke to WION about China's abuses against Tibetans, and the larger role played by India in highlighting these abuses.

Sangay shed light on how India has helped Tibetans, saying that all the institutions that were destroyed in Tibet were rebuilt in India.

"We always accept that India has done the most for Tibetans because the largest number of Tibetans are here, all the monasteries and cultural institutions that were destroyed in Tibet were rebuilt here, and we have revived our civilisation here", he said.

But the PM-in-exile added how India can improve its strategy in dealing with the Tibetan crisis.

"India also in some ways gave away Tibet when it was occupied in 1950s, India could have done a bit more... For eg - The media calls it "Indo-China border". When the Chinese troops came to Galwan Valley and crossed the river, and violence ensued, the media, and the intellectuals complained -"Why are they crossing the border, why are they here". But the fact is when you said Tibet is part of China, the Chinese troops will say "Yes, I'm coming to my territory because you say so", Sangay asserted.

He also urged India to not lose the "larger picture". He said the following - "When you have already given up 2.5 million square kilometres of land - almost two-third of India's land size, when you argue about one mountaintop, it sounds so small... India should not lose the larger picture. Historically, it was always a border between Tibet and India".

Last month, President Xi Jinping instructed officials to expedite construction of the new railway project connecting Sichuan Province and Linzhi in Tibet.

With a designed speed of 160 km per hour, the 435-km rail line passes through 47 tunnels and 120 bridges, according to its constructor Tibet Railway Construction Co. Ltd.

Construction started in 2014 on the railway connecting Lhasa, the regional capital, and Nyingchi in eastern Tibet.

It is the first electrified railroad in Tibet and is slated to begin operations in June 2021, the Xinhua report said.

So far, a total of 31.2 billion yuan (about USD 4.8 billion) has been invested in the project, according to official data.

With more than 90 per cent of the railway built in areas more than 3,000 metres above sea level, the high altitude and complex geological conditions have posed great challenges to the project, the report said.

China completes track-laying work for a railway line in Tibet close to Arunachal Pradesh

China feels that it should control religious institution in Tibet and due to this a greater crisis will emerge with the eventual demise of 14th Dalai Lama as there will be a major power struggle over who will get to choose the religious leaders of Tibet, according to a report in Taiwan Times.

China, which had installed their puppet Panchen Lama in 90s to control Tibet, is expected to use him to legitimise the appointment of their own selected Chinese candidate as the next leader of Tibetan Buddhism (the 15th Dalai Lama), write Tsewang Paljor in Taiwan Times.

Ninety-nine per cent of Tibetans do not accept Chinese appointed Panchen Lama as the real or true Panchen Lama, Paljor stated. They regard him as false Panchen Lama.

The Chinese government occupied Tibet in 1950 and has ever since tried to control the region.

The Dalai Lama escaped to India in 1959 and the 10the Panchen Lama (Lobsang Trinley Lhundrup Choekyi Gyaltsen) stayed behind in Tibet. He spoke against Chinese rule many times and wrote a report chronicling Tibet's famines in the 1960s.

He was then arrested and spent more than eight years in jail. He died in 1989, due to the atrocities committed by the Chinese authorities, said Paljor

As per the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama was requested by the search team of the 11th Panchen Lama headed by Chadrel Rinpoche to identify the (reincarnated) Panchen Lama from a list of possible candidates.

On May 15, 1995, the Dalai Lama announced Gedhun as the 11th Panchen Lama. Two days later, the Chinese government abducted the child and his family.

"None of them have ever been seen or heard from again. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, who had just turned six, became the world's youngest political prisoner. Chinese authorities even arrested Chadrel Rinpoche and his assistant Jampa Chung for finding Gedhun and disclosing his information to the Dalai Lama. They were imprisoned for six - and four years respectively for 'selling state secrets' and 'colluding with separatist forces abroad," he wrote.

The Chinese government rejected the Dalai Lama's choice of Panchen Lama stating that his ascendance was "illegal and invalid" and, six months after Gedhun's abduction, China announced that it had found the "real" reincarnation of 10th Panchen Lama named Gyaltsen Norbu, a Tibetan boy - the son of two Communist Party members - as the 11th Panchen Lama.

However, Tibetans have not accepted the Chinese appointed Panchen Lama. 'Tashi Lhunpo' monastery University is the real seat of Panchen Lamas but Gyaltsen Norbu never stays in Tashi Lhunpo".

Defying government orders, local Tibetan officials refused to participate in preparations for the visit. This was not the first time Gyaltsen Norbu had faced popular boycotts by Tibetans.

Similar mass public boycotts were witnessed a few years ago when the Chinese authorities brought Gyaltsen Norbu to Labrang monastery.

Time and again, Tibetans have also proved that they are not going to accept him as their religious leader, Paljor noted.

"Chinese now feel that Tibet is a part of China and that the control of its religious institutions should be in their hands. It is a major power struggle over who will get to choose the religious leaders of Tibet. And, of course, the greater crisis will emerge with the eventual demise of the 14th Dalai Lama," he wrote.

"However, in order to checkmate China, the Dalai Lama has declared that he will be reborn outside Tibet in exile. And so on his demise, there will be a massive search by the Chinese and a massive search by the exile community held simultaneously to find a new Dalai Lama," he added.

A media tour organised by the Chinese government has offered a rare glimpse of life in Tibet. The tour which began on Wednesday (October 14) took journalists to a village in Nanshan city near Lhasa which was built to relocate those living in high altitude, approximately above 4300 meters above the sea level, to a lower area.

Government-sponsored trip offers a rare glimpse of Tibet

The US has named a Special Coordinator on Tibet. Palki Sharma Upadhyay tells you how the Quad alliance can play a role in holding China accountable for rights violations.

Gravitas: The US appoints Special Coordinator for Tibet

The foreign ministers of Japan, Australia, USA and India (Quad) have now met in Japan for Quadrilateral Security Dialogue to discuss future strategies and plans to ensure security in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Quad is an anti-China front and China clearly knows this, just as everyone else in the world. Quad should therefore be causing anxiety to leadership in China since it is for the first time that four nations have formed a front to checkmate the aggressive and expansionist ambitions of China. While only four countries are members of Quad, a number of other countries like Vietnam, Philippines, South Korea must be wishing QUAD well and watching the developments with interest.

While China has made spectacular progress in industrial and economic growth and military power, this 'progress' has only caused alarm in many countries who are concerned about the aggressive posturing of China

China has already 'pocketed' Pakistan and North Korea. Moreover, China has a vice-like grip on countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar. It has managed to do so by giving loans and getting strategic positions in these countries.

China’s occupation of Tibet is now total and massacre of thousands of innocent Tibetans by China has been virtually ignored by UN and its member countries.

China is occupying thousands of kilometres of Indian land and is claiming more. China’s aggressive claim with regard to the South China Sea and Senkaku islands clearly shows its expansionist intentions.

China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) scheme is part of its strategy to dominate the entire world. In such a situation it is important that China’s aggressive march be halted and that China renounces its expansionist approach.

It is still not clear as to what would be the strategy of the Quad. Will be restricted to defensive movements?

Member countries of the Quad should realize that defensive strategies would only give more time to China to fortify its expansionist plans. If Quad ends up just as a discussion forum, China will have the last laugh.

Chinese government is a totalitarian regime under the control of coterie of leaders and certainly, it is not a representative government of the people of China.

Therefore, any strategic action of Quad members against China should be clearly understood as directed towards Chinese government and not towards Chinese people. Quad members should make this clear to the world.

It is necessary that Quad should work out a time-bound action plan to resist China’s aggression.

The first step in this direction should be to recognise Taiwan and take measures to ensure that Taiwan becomes a full-fledged member of the UN. China has been threatening to invade Taiwan for a long time and it may do so at any time in future. These plans must be thwarted.

China has occupied Tibet for over six decades now and the world is silent. China is suppressing freedom in Hong Kong and the world is simply watching. Encouraged by such silence, China may think that occupation of Taiwan may also get silently 'approved' by the world. China may also think that it can brush aside sounds of protest from 'paper tiger'. It is therefore necessary for the Quad to not let itself become one.

History provides many examples that drive home the saying that offence is the best defence. This is true more so when the cause is just.

Taiwan was part of China. When communist leaders launched an aggressive war against the then leadership of China, Taiwan became a separate region. Communist leaders then occupied the mainland. Hence, Taiwan deserves world recognition.

Second strategy of the Quad should be to work towards liberation of Tibet and undo the historical harm done by ruthless and totalitarian Chinese government. World and the UN have a duty to ensure that Tibet gets it’s independence back.

These two steps would make China realize the limitations of its aggression and expansionist strategies and would make China behave better, which is an essential need for world peace.

The Quad should accord recognition to Taiwan

China was called out at the UNHRC by the West to restore basic legal rights in Hong Kong and open up to scrutiny its remote Xinjiang region where more than one million ethnic Uighurs are held.

China faces criticism at UNHRC over Hong Kong, Tibet & Xinjiang

China is waging many wars -- and not just the ones on its borders. There are wars within -- that it's waging on its own people.

The three main wars that one can list are Tibet, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang.

China has a population of a little more than 139 crore. The three regions of Tibet, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang represent less than 4 per cent of China's population. They are also three autonomous regions of China, and specific minority groups have a higher population here.

But China wants to change that. It has launched a relentless campaign of oppression, crackdowns, interment camps, indoctrination and coercion.

TIBET

Thousands of people have been forced into labour camps in Tibet. China says they are being educated.

But the truth is they are being brainwashed, detained against will, forced into labour, and then shipped off to different parts of the country to do low-wage jobs.

It's a slave factory -- the idea is to force Tibetans to give up their linguistic, cultural and spiritual heritage.

China wants to erase their identity by forcibly assimilating them.

A new report by the New York Times says more than 500 thousand Tibetans have gone through this "training" this year alone. The training is always followed by forced labour.

Several thousands have already been sent to work in far flung cities and towns. Officials in Tibet have been gives quotas and targets -- they must send a specified number of Tibetans labourers.

Larger districts are supposed to supply more workers.

Some numbers have also been reported -- 1,000 from the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, 1,400 from Shee-ga-z, and 800 from Shannan.

Those who can't meet the targets are punished; those who do are rewarded.

Agents and companies are subsidised to organise transfers. The rates are fixed -- $74 for each labourer moved out of the region and $44 for those placed within Tibet.

Tibetans are being trafficked, and this is a state sponsored racket, as also suggested by the NYT report.

To this end, Lhadon Tethong, director of Tibet Action Institute, said the news was devastating and disturbing, but not surprising.

"Sadly, I am not surprised. The news is obviously devastating and disturbing. But it's not surprising at all," she said,

INNER MONGOLIA

China wants to erase the unique identity of Mongolians. It is targeting their language.

Last month, a new order was issued that said school children must be taught in Mandarin, not the Mongolian language.

People protested even as students staged walkout. Parents pulled their children out of schools.

Online petitions were circulated. And China went after the protesters. They were threatened with arrests.

The demonstrations were suppressed. And those who still protested were put under surveillance. Chinese officials also targetted the parents.

A WeChat message was allegedly issued by local authorities for Mongolian parents. This was a warning. It said if parents didn't send their kids to school by the 17th of this month, they would lose access to government subsidies.

Banks were told to stop loans for the next five years to parents who didn't comply. High school students who did not attend classes were threatened with expulsion.

This is the punishment for protest in China.

XINJIANG

This can be termed as communist crackdown on steroids -- the world's biggest detention programme.

In mass internment camps, there is an open abuse of more than a million people. And for this, the world has slammed China.

But Beijing remains undeterred. It is building more detention facilities -- close to 380 suspected detention sites have been found in Xinjiang.

At least 61 have expanded their area and 14 are still growing.

Also, China is believed to have incarcerated as many as one million Uighurs in recent years. And now it is razing down mosques.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute has come out with an assessment. They used satellite images to study how Xinjiang is being changed. They have estimated that around 16,000 mosques have been destroyed in the last three years.

As many as 8,500 have been completely demolished. Close to 30 per cent of the region's key Islamic sites have also been demolished.

How much more proof does the world need against China? We wonder!
