Two senior Chinese officials were slapped with sanctions by the United States over alleged "serious human rights abuse" in Tibet. The news agency AFP reported that the officials are accused of torture and killing of prisoners and forced sterilisation.&nbsp;

Any US assets and criminalised transactions with Wu Yingjie and Zhang Hongbo have been blocked by the US. Wu was China's boss in Tibet from 2016 to 2021, on the other hand, Zhang was China's police chief in the Himalayan region since 2018. It is believed that Zhang is still in charge.&nbsp;

In total, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said that it has sanctioned over 40 individuals and entities across nine countries connected to corruption and human rights abuse. The move is in recognition of International Anti-Corruption Day and Human Rights Day.&nbsp;

Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson said in the official statement, "Corrupt actors and human rights abusers both rely on deficiencies in the international financial system to perpetrate their activities."&nbsp;

He added, "By exposing the egregious behaviour of these actors, we can help disrupt their activities, dismantle their networks, and starve them of resources."&nbsp;

Large-scale protests reportedly erupted in Tibet’s capital Lhasa against China’s draconian zero-Covid policy, which has been in place for more than three months.

According to reports, the agitation broke out on Wednesday afternoon, with hundreds of people gathering on the streets, and stretched till the next day.

Several videos have appeared on social media, showing people marching on the streets. Since these clips were in mandarin, it was difficult to decipher what they were saying.

Another video showed officials blocking hundreds of people who have assembled on the streets, with an official on the loudspeaker asking them to "please be understanding and to go back", according to BBC.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported citing sources that the protesters warned Chinese officials that if the Covid lockdown measures aren’t lifted, they would "set off a fire".

Though it is unclear what they mean by that, RFA claimed that they were alluding to the 2009 incident in which people immolated themselves while protesting against the repressive Chinese occupation.

Taken aback by the sporadic protest, the officials have deployed additional forces across Tibet over fears that the tussle between civilians and police officers could turn violent.

The Covid lockdown began in early August in Lhasa after number of cases started to climb.

However, Lhasa residents have been complaining that the sudden lockdown didn’t leave them enough to time to prepare, leaving some residents short on essential items.

The BBC, which claimed to have seen multiple posts on Douyin—China's TikTok version—reported that people in the clips complained that they were trapped in Lhasa.

"Today is the 77th day of the lockdown in Lhasa. I don't know how long it will continue to be like this. I [cant find] hope. Can you understand... how hard it is for migrant workers?" the post said.

"We haven't had any income for three months - but expenses have not been reduced even by a penny. My friends in Lhasa - how long can you go on like this?" said another post.

Angry residents in Tibet’s Lhasa capital protest against Beijing’s zero-Covid policy

Chen Quanguo, the former party secretary of Tibet and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region has been shown the door by Xi Jinping after the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) Congress that closed on Saturday. Reportedly, Chen's name is missing from the newly elected Central Committee, which is regarded as China's top leadership body.

Chen, who is only 66, is much below the&nbsp;unofficial retirement age of 68 that Xi has used as a baseline throughout most of his tenure. The fact that Chen's ouster was deliberate can be gauged by the fact that 72-year-old Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission has been kept in the committee while 69-year-old foreign minister Wang Yi also keeps his position.&nbsp;

The CPC leader is regarded by many as the architect of the 'Uyghur genocide' that continues to take place in the Xinjiang province in some shape or form even today.&nbsp;

However, prior to ruling the region with an iron fist, Chen ruled over Tibet as the CPC Committee&nbsp;Secretary from 2011 to 2016. He is the only person in CPC to have served as party secretary for both the autonomous regions.

As reported by WION, the Xinjiang Police Files,&nbsp;a document stolen from internment camps in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region had revealed the true extent of the campaign that Chen was undertaking.&nbsp;

According to him, the Chinese government's campaign of repression in Xinjiang was not intended to purge the region of criminals but rather was an "extinction war" against the Uyghur people. His description of the Uyghurs as an "enemy class" had led to criticism.

The former official further stated that those detainees who were given sentences of less than five years should be mobilised for "learning law" and "bilingual learning," and that they should only be released once they had attained a sufficient study level, regardless of how long that took.

As reported by WION, Xi Jinping on multiple occasions has made it clear that Islam can only exist in China if it is reformed according to Chinese orientation. And according to the documents, Chen was merely following the line set by the likes of Xi in the upper hierarchy.&nbsp;

And the Chinese seem to be applying the same. The oppression of Tibet by the regime is well-documented. The autonomous region has been under the control of Beijing since 1949. &nbsp;

But now, there seems to be a conscious effort to obliterate its history by referring to Tibet by its appointed name ‘Xizang’.

For a long time, the name Tibet has been associated with struggle, freedom, culture and identity and of course, Dalai Lama. &nbsp;

The retirement of “Tibet” in favour of “Xizang” has been carried out by the&nbsp;state Chinese mouthpiece Global Times and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an attempt to shift the focus from all of these issues.

For the past few months, the nationalist tabloid has been referring to Tibet by the name “Xizang’. Notably, since January this year, the tabloid has used “Xizang” in&nbsp;more than 200&nbsp;English articles.

The first time it was used in a July article where the headline read “New Record for Horizontal Drilling Tech Set in Xizang Hydropower Project,” read&nbsp;one headline&nbsp;back in July.

Last month, another article’s headline said “Xizang Authorities Offer Support for Local People After COVID-19 Flare-up”.

Moreover, this week, the state-run media outlet ran a report in the English language that nearly 70 countries had called on others to “stop interfering in China’s internal affairs on [the] Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Xizang regions.”

This purportedly came in response to the efforts&nbsp;by the United States to encourage a debate on human rights in Xinjiang at an upcoming session of the UN Human Rights Council.

However, hidden in plain sight is the clever placement of the name ‘Xizang’ in place of Tibet and how casually the new name is presented.

And what is interesting to note is when one Googles the word <a name="_Hlk115556582">‘Xizang’</a>, the top four search articles are from the Global Times.

Moreover, the name ‘Xizang’ is now being extensively used by China’s foreign affairs ministry in its official press releases.

The latest mention came just&nbsp;last month when foreign minister Wang Yi met with Mongolian Foreign Minister Batmunkh Battsetseg, and an official release noted that “Mongolia reaffirms its firm commitment to the one-China principle and opposes interference in China’s internal affairs related to Taiwan, Xizang, Xinjiang and Hong Kong, among others.”

Notably, this is not the first instance that Beijing has relabelled a name. For seven decades, the Chinese have favoured the name “Mount Qomolangma” over “Mount Everest”.

That is because the country claims that the name ‘Everest’ is associated with imperialism and colonialism.

The oppression of Tibet by the regime is well-documented. The autonomous region has been under the control of Beijing since 1949. But now, there seems to be a conscious effort to obliterate its history by referring to Tibet by its appointed name ‘Xizang’. For a long time, the name Tibet has been associated with struggle, freedom, culture and identity and of course, Dalai Lama. The retirement of “Tibet” in favour of “Xizang” has been carried out by the state Chinese mouthpiece Global Times and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an attempt to shift the focus from all of these issues. For the past few months, the nationalist tabloid has been referring to Tibet by the name “Xizang’. Notably, since January this year, the tabloid has used “Xizang” in more than 200 English articles. The first time it was used in a July article where the headline read “New Record for Horizontal Drilling Tech Set in Xizang Hydropower Project,” read one headline back in July. Last month, another article’s headline said “Xizang Authorities Offer Support for Local People After COVID-19 Flare-up”. Moreover, this week, the state-run media outlet ran a report in the English language that nearly 70 countries had called on others to “stop interfering in China’s internal affairs on [the] Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Xizang regions.” This purportedly came in response to the efforts by the United States to encourage a debate on human rights in Xinjiang at an upcoming session of the UN Human Rights Council. However, hidden in plain sight is the clever placement of the name ‘Xizang’ in place of Tibet and how casually the new name is presented. And what is interesting to note is when one Googles the word ‘Xizang’, the top four search articles are from the Global Times. The latest mention came just last month when foreign minister Wang Yi met with Mongolian Foreign Minister Batmunkh Battsetseg, and an official release noted that “Mongolia reaffirms its firm commitment to the one-China principle and opposes interference in China’s internal affairs related to Taiwan, Xizang, Xinjiang and Hong Kong, among others.” Notably, this is not the first instance that Beijing has relabelled a name. Noting that the study targeted men, women, children and Buddhist monks for the DNA collection, the study stated, “Our research suggests that mass DNA collection is a form of social control directed against the Tibetan people. In some cases, police have targeted Buddhist monks.” Despite China's malfeasance being out in the public, the Xi Jinping government doubles down on its rhetoric by remarking that it is collecting DNA samples and other biometric identification data as a crime prevention measure. The study by the Canadian researchers comes roughly a week after Human Rights Watch published a similar report and shed light on the arbitrary personal data collection authorised by Politburo. “The Chinese government is already subjecting Tibetans to pervasive repression. Now the authorities are literally taking blood without consent to strengthen their surveillance capabilities.” said Sophie Richardson, China director at Human Rights Watch. 'Meaningful autonomy': Dalai Lama has a strong message for China over Tibet

Tibetans celebrated the 87th birthday of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama, in the north Indian hill town of Dharamshala on Wednesday (July 6).&nbsp;

The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) of the Tibetan government-in-exile organised the Dalai Lama's 87th birthday in Dharamshala.&nbsp;

On his birthday, let's talk about why China wants control over Dalai Lama?

To dilute the cultural and religious identity of Tibetans, the key for China is to control the Dalai Lama. And, therefore, China wants to decide who the next Dalai Lama will be.&nbsp;

This report attempts to understand the history and the institution of the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual head of Tibet and until nine years ago, he was also the political head.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
The institution of the Dalai Lama goes back to the 1400s and it stands on the pillar of reincarnation. Tibetans believe the Dalai Lama has control over his re-birth and he can choose the body into which he is reincarnated. &nbsp;

The previous Dalai Lama died in 1933 and it took four years to find his successor. The 14th Dalai Lama is now 85 years old and is ailing.&nbsp; 
It is the job of the lamas of Buddhism to find their successor.&nbsp;

But, China wants to control that process and appoint a pliant Dalai Lama. The US has now made a law which says the Tibetans should be able to decide who the next Dalai Lama should be.&nbsp;

The second part of the history&nbsp;

In 1950, China annexed Tibet and for the last 70 years, Beijing has been trying to impose itself on Tibet.&nbsp;

It has hammered the land's unique identity, interfered with Tibetan Buddhism, attacked monasteries, pushed propaganda and sent Han Chinese into the region.&nbsp;

But controlling Tibet is not easy for China, legitimising its claim on Tibet is even less.&nbsp;

The Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government have been in exile for years now.&nbsp;

When China annexed Tibet, the Dalai Lama fled to India with some thousand followers in 1959.&nbsp;

Currently, Dharamsala, located in northern India, houses the Tibetan government-in-exile and the Dalai Lama.&nbsp;

But, China does not recognise his authority.

The Dalai Lama says that his successor may be born in a free country and could be a female.

Traditionally, the Dalai Lama picks his own successor and tells his aides before his death where to look for a child who will be his reincarnation.

According to the Dalai Lama's official website: "The person who reincarnates has sole legitimate authority over where and how he or she takes birth". &nbsp;

Two Dalai Lamas

This time, the succession may not be so simple and the world may end up with two Dalai Lamas, one picked by China and the other by Dharamsala.&nbsp;

China views the Dalai Lama as a 'separatist', who is working to split Tibet from China.&nbsp;

Beijing has poured billions of dollars and shattered the traditional Tibetan monastic order with the weight of Chinese factories.&nbsp;

The dragon knows that its grip on Tibet can only be tightened if it gets to pick the next Dalai Lama, who would be Tibetan by&nbsp;blood and Chinese by spirit.&nbsp;

Beijing has called Buddhism an ancient Chinese religion and Tibetans have been jailed for hanging photos of the Dalai Lama on their walls.&nbsp;

In 1995, China detained a six-year-old Tibetan boy who was recognised as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama.&nbsp;

The boy has not been seen since and Beijing went on to name his replacement and now wants to do the same with the Dalai Lama.&nbsp;

The spiritual leader knows about the Chinese plan and in 2011, he said that the final authority over his successor is "myself and no one else, and obviously, not Chinese communists".

In 2019, the Dalai Lama said: "In future, in case you see two Dalai Lamas come, one from a free country and one chosen by the Chinese, then nobody will trust, nobody will respect the one chosen by China, so that's an additional problem for the Chinese".&nbsp;

The stand of US and India

China's problems have only added up for one year and the American legislation definitely comes in the way of Beijing's plan.

India is the home to the Dalai Lama, but officially it recognises the One China policy.&nbsp;

New Delhi has not commented on America's bill, but its position reflects itself in more subtle ways, like Indian leaders wishing the Dalai Lama on his birthday or India using special forces made up of Tibetan exiles to occupy strategic heights in Ladakh.&nbsp;

It is the job of the lamas of Buddhism to find their successor. But, China wants to control that process and appoint a pliant Dalai Lama. The US has now made a law which says the Tibetans should be able to decide who the next Dalai Lama should be. The second part of the history In 1950, China annexed Tibet and for the last 70 years, Beijing has been trying to impose itself on Tibet. It has hammered the land's unique identity, interfered with Tibetan Buddhism, attacked monasteries, pushed propaganda and sent Han Chinese into the region. But controlling Tibet is not easy for China, legitimising its claim on Tibet is even less. The Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government have been in exile for years now. When China annexed Tibet, the Dalai Lama fled to India with some thousand followers in 1959. Currently, Dharamsala, located in northern India, houses the Tibetan government-in-exile and the Dalai Lama. But, China does not recognise his authority. The Dalai Lama says that his successor may be born in a free country and could be a female. Traditionally, the Dalai Lama picks his own successor and tells his aides before his death where to look for a child who will be his reincarnation. According to the Dalai Lama's official website: "The person who reincarnates has sole legitimate authority over where and how he or she takes birth". China views the Dalai Lama as a 'separatist', who is working to split Tibet from China. Beijing has poured billions of dollars and shattered the traditional Tibetan monastic order with the weight of Chinese factories. The dragon knows that its grip on Tibet can only be tightened if it gets to pick the next Dalai Lama, who would be Tibetan by blood and Chinese by spirit. Beijing has called Buddhism an ancient Chinese religion and Tibetans have been jailed for hanging photos of the Dalai Lama on their walls. In 1995, China detained a six-year-old Tibetan boy who was recognised as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama. The boy has not been seen since and Beijing went on to name his replacement and now wants to do the same with the Dalai Lama. The spiritual leader knows about the Chinese plan and in 2011, he said that the final authority over his successor is "myself and no one else, and obviously, not Chinese communists". In 2019, the Dalai Lama said: "In future, in case you see two Dalai Lamas come, one from a free country and one chosen by the Chinese, then nobody will trust, nobody will respect the one chosen by China, so that's an additional problem for the Chinese". The stand of US and India China's problems have only added up for one year and the American legislation definitely comes in the way of Beijing's plan. India is the home to the Dalai Lama, but officially it recognises the One China policy. New Delhi has not commented on America's bill, but its position reflects itself in more subtle ways, like Indian leaders wishing the Dalai Lama on his birthday or India using special forces made up of Tibetan exiles to occupy strategic heights in Ladakh. During that visit, the delegation had met Indian MPs riling up the Chinese embassy which had sent strongly worded letter over the development. New Delhi had then asked embassy to behave and that such letters are inappropriate. On her meeting with Taiwan envoy, Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament in exile said, "We had a great exchange of views how best we have the exchange of students, how best we can make the Taiwanese people interact with the Tibetan people, so that people to people relation is built and friendship is flourished. " During Delhi meet, she met, Kiren Rijiju who is the convener of north eastern Parliamentarians, Dr Rajkumar Ranjan singh who is also minister of state in Ministry of external affairs. She slammed the recent visit of Chinese FM, explaining, "visit was just kind of a drama to show, you can do business but we can talk about the border later on."

A new code of conduct for members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Tibet explicitly forbids party members from all forms of religiosity in both public and private life. The six-point code of conduct is the first party regulation that clearly and comprehensively details the specific types of religiosity forbidden for party members in Tibet, The Hong Kong Post reported.

Party members are also required to take on an active role to propagate the party's anti-religion stance by advising relatives to downplay their religious consciousness, not set up altars or hang religious imagery in homes, and seek party approval before inviting religious personnel to conduct rituals for customary occasions such as weddings and funerals, the report said.Taking the cultural oppression into people's homes, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has forced and even coerced the Tibetan people to place Xi Jinping's picture into the Tibetan Buddhist altars, the report further said.

The development comes amid other measures by the Chinese administration. A new regulation called 'Measures on the Administration of Internet Religious Informative Services'&nbsp;which came into effect on March 1 bans all foreign organizations and individuals from spreading religious content online in China and Tibet except those who have acquired government licenses.

China using draconian methods to destroy identity of Tibetans

A university student was reportedly arrested earlier this month for teaching Tibetians in Chamdo and is reported to have not been seen afterwards, according to Tibet Watch.

Notably, Chinese authorities have banned 'informal' Tibetan language classes in many areas of Tibet that children attend outside their schools.

The authorities have also warned that anyone caught violating the government's order will face 'serious legal consequences and punishment', Radio Free Asia reported citing a source.

"No individual or organization is allowed to hold informal classes or workshops to teach the Tibetan language during the winter holidays when the schools are closed.This is an attempt to wipe out the Tibetan language," the source added.

Choedon, who hailed from the Yamda village in Riwoche country, was detained on February 13. According to her family, the language lessons during the winter vacation in the village might have resulted in her detention, Phayul reported.

Citing sources by Tibet Watch, Phayul reported that the young student has no criminal record. "Choedon was arrested by the Chinese authorities but she has not committed any wrongdoing nor does she have any criminal record. Her family is concerned about her safety as it has been more than five days since her arrest and disappearance but there is no clue about where she is being held or her conditions," added Phayul.

She is currently enrolled at the Southwest Minzu University in Chengdu, it said.

China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) is reportedly attempting to build a rapport with Tibetan population along Line of Actual Control (LAC)&nbsp;in efforts to boost its border capabilities. These efforts even include deployment of PLA cooks to teach Tibetan families how to cook 'Chinese dishes', according to reports.

The development was mentioned in a report of an official Chinese portal, said the reports. The report was about situation in a Chinese village by the name of Yumai. It is China's last big border village located just kilometres from Upper Subansiri district in India's Arunachal Pradesh. The village is part of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).

The PLA's courting of the villagers is being seen as part of a strategy to ensure they are on China's side in case of a border conflict with India.

In 2017, Chinese President Xi Jinping had written a letter to Tibetan herders in the village. In the letter, Xi&nbsp;mentioned herders being 'guardians of Chinese territory'. He also said that he hoped that herders will 'motivate' others.

Now, Chinese Army appears to have taken steps in this direction, going by the developments mentioned in the report. Chinese soldiers have been instructed to call on the elderly in Yumai village to look to their general comfort and safety. Cooks from Chinese Army are teaching Tibetan household to cook 'Chinese' dishes.&nbsp;

The report says that even five 'homestays' have been set up for tourists. These rooms have wifi, oxygen generators and TVs. Military doctors visit the village twice a week to tend to the sick.

The letter by Political Counsellor, Chinese Embassy to India Zhou Yongsheng calls on Indian MPs to not engage with "out-and-out separatist political group and an illegal organization".&nbsp;

It further points, "Indian government has recognized that the Tibet Autonomous Region is part of the territory of the People's Republic of China" and Beijing "firmly opposes any anti-China separatist activities conducted by 'Tibetan independence' forces in any capacity".

The letter is seen as a wolf warrior diplomacy by China, part of a global trend by its diplomats who have been doing this in past and across the world. The letter in a derogatory tone chided, "You are a senior politician who know the China-India relations well. It is hoped that you could understand the sensitivity of the issue and refrain from providing support to the 'Tibetan independence'&nbsp;forces".

Not all MPs got the letter. When asked, MP Manish Tiwari who was present at the event said “neither have I received any letter nor will I demean or diminish myself by responding to such imbecile missives. Had Wang Yi written perhaps I would have considered responding".

Meanwhile, the Tibetan govt in exile has reacted strongly to the development. In a series of tweet-statement, Tenzin Lekshay, Spokesperson of the Central Tibetan Administration said, "Tibet issue is certainly not an internal issue of China. Whatever happens in Tibet is a serious matter of concerns for all the people around the world." He added, "China must stop growling here &amp; there all the time."

It's not the first time the Chinese embassy has sent such a letter, in the past it wrote a letter to MP Sujeet Kumar for participating in a meet organised by the Taiwan government.&nbsp;

An activist from the Tibetan communities who took part in the vigil told ANI that Beijing ordered a widespread crackdown on citizens of Kham Drago, a province in Central Tibet, demolishing schools, Buddhist statues, and monasteries, in an attempt to "Sinicise" entire China-occupied countries.

According to the source, the destruction began on December 12 with "military soldiers strongly posted in the crossroads of its neighbourhood to prevent any type of protest."

According to the rights organisation, the statue was formally created with the full agreement of the local authorities for Buddhists' belief that it would prevent starvation, war, and possible disasters of fire, water, earth, and air.

At the time of dismantling, local Chinese authorities declared the construction documents fraudulent and stated that the statue's height was not permitted in the area.

According to one protestor, China is attempting to eradicate Tibetan Buddhism's cultural features. It's a way of homogenising and criticising Tibet as a whole.
