According to a Justice Department report released Thursday, police officials who responded to the deadly Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting waited far too long to confront the gunman, acted with "no urgency" in establishing a command post, and communicated inaccurate information to grieving families, identifying "cascading failures" in law enforcement's handling of the massacre.

A viral social media challenge, known as the "TikTok Door Knock" challenge, is causing widespread physical and emotional distress among residents of all ages in Texas, police said.

The challenge encourages participants, mostly teenagers, to bang on or kick doors in the middle of the night with the aim of startling unsuspecting residents.
Reports in the US media indicate that some kicks and bangs on doors have caused significant damage, according to Fort Bend County Constable Precinct 3 Chief Deputy Jimmy Evans. He labelled the challenge as a dangerously modernised version of the classic "ding, dong, ditch" game.

New York on Thursday (Jan 4th) sued 17 bus companies for violating state law by transporting migrants from the southern US border to the city. The city is seeking $708 million via the lawsuit which has been filed in New York state court in Manhattan.

Reportedly, the companies have transported more than 33,000 migrants to New York City from Texas, as part of Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott's campaign to expel illegal migrants who cross into the US via the Mexico border.

A $708 million compensation

The city, as per Reuters, has accused the bus charters of violating a 19th century law that required anyone transporting "needy" people to New York to cover their expenses.

NYC is seeking $708 million, which it says was the cost the city incurred to provide the 33,000 migrants shelter and services over the last two years.

In a statement, New York City said that it has "announced a lawsuit against 17 charter bus and transportation companies that seeks to recoup all costs New York City has incurred providing emergency shelter and services to migrants transported by the charter bus companies — totalling at least approximately $708 million in the last 20 months."

For more than two years, protesting against what he calls the national government's failings on immigration, Texas Governor Greg Abbot has sent newly arrived migrants from the border to New York and other Democratic-run cities.

"Since the spring of 2022, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has admitted to facilitating the transport of more than 33,600 migrants to New York City without having the companies transporting those migrants pay for the cost of continued care in violation of New York's Social Services Law," said the city.

New York's Social Services Law, as per AFP, requires the big apple to provide shelter and care to anyone who requests it.

As per New York Mayor Eric Adams, "These companies have violated state law by not paying the cost of caring for these migrants, and that's why we are suing to recoup approximately $700 million already spent to care for migrants sent here in the last two years by Texas."

The US Justice Department on Wednesday (Jan 3) filed a lawsuit against Texas to challenge an immigration law that gives state officials broad powers to arrest, prosecute and deport people who illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

Why it's important?

The law, known as SB4 or Senate Bill 4, makes it a state crime to illegally enter or re-enter Texas from a foreign country and gives state and local law enforcement authorities the power to arrest and prosecute violators. It also allows state judges to order that individuals be deported, with up to 20-year prison sentences for those who refuse to comply.

The Justice Department's lawsuit comes about two weeks after a lawsuit by civil rights groups that also challenged the new Republican-backed Texas law.

Key Quotes

"SB 4 is clearly unconstitutional," said Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta.

"Under the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution and longstanding Supreme Court precedent, states cannot adopt immigration laws that interfere with the framework enacted by Congress," Gupta said in a statement released by the U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday.

Context

The Republican-controlled Texas legislature passed the measure in November. The state's Republican governor, Greg Abbott, signed the law in December.

The Mexican government, whose foreign ministry describes the Texas law as an "anti-immigrant measure," welcomed the Justice Department's lawsuit and said measures like the legislation could foster hate crimes against migrant communities.

US: Six NRI family members killed in road accident in Texas, day after Christmas

It is that time of the year when the festive season is here and people are traveling back home to be with their loved ones but for some Christmas is not going to be so merry as a record number of migrants wearing red holiday outfits continue to cross the US-Mexico border over the weekend.

A delegation of top US officials is expected to visit Mexico soon as negotiations over how to enforce immigration rules. The two countries' shared border continues on the upcoming visit to Mexico comes amid controversy over the closure of two rail crossings in Texas earlier this week.

Texas supreme court overturns ruling on pregnant woman seeking abortion after she leaves state

The Texas Supreme Court on Monday overturned a lower court's ruling that would have allowed a pregnant woman to get an emergency abortion under the medical exception for the state's near-total abortion ban, granting a petition by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Texas top court rules against woman who sought abortion for medical emergency

The Texas Supreme Court has temporarily halted a lower court decision that permitted a Texas woman to undergo an emergency abortion. This move comes as several states tighten their abortion laws raising concerns about access to reproductive healthcare.

Attorney general representing the state urged the court to overturn a judge's ruling that granted a woman the request for an abortion due to a severe anomaly in her pregnancy. The Supreme Court has decided to review the case, suspending the lower court's decision until a thorough evaluation is conducted.

The woman involved, Kate Cox, had initiated legal action against the state challenging its restrictive abortion measures. She sought a temporary restraining order from the court to enable her to proceed with the abortion.

In response to the Supreme Court's decision, Molly Duane, a senior staff attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, expressed concerns about potential delays in justice.

Duane laid emphasis about the urgency of medical care in such cases stating, "Kate is already 20 weeks pregnant. This is why people should not need to beg for healthcare in a court of law." "We fear that justice delayed will be justice denied," she added.

US: Texas Supreme Court temporarily blocks woman's emergency abortion permission

A Texas judge on Thursday (Dec 7) allowed a woman to have an abortion, a decision that challenged the US state's strict laws prohibiting the procedure. The woman, from Dallas-Fort Worth, had a potentially life-threatening pregnancy.

Judge Maya Guerra Gamble allowed 20-weeks-pregnant Kate Cox to have an abortion under a provision of the Texas law which allows the procedure in cases where a woman's health is at risk.

The woman's lawyers have said that the decision is the first such case since the US Supreme Court last year allowed states to ban abortion, overturning Roe v. Wade, which gave a constitutional right to the procedure.
