Southern states, including Texas, have been grappling with a historic heatwave in recent weeks, intensifying the danger faced by hikers. The National Park Service has actively cautioned individuals to avoid trails during the afternoon, stay well-hydrated, and limit exposure to the sun.

The incident occurred as the 31-year-old man and his two stepsons were hiking along the Marufo Vega Trail in scorching 119°F (48°C) temperatures. When the teenager fell ill, the stepfather embarked on a return journey to their vehicle to seek help, while the boy's 21-year-old brother attempted to carry him back to the trailhead, as reported by the National Park Service.

At approximately 6:00 PM local time (11:00 PM GMT), the Big Bend National Park's Communications Centre received an emergency assistance call.

Tragically, when park rangers and US Border Patrol Agents arrived at 7:30 PM local time, they discovered the lifeless body of the teenager along the trail. The treacherous Marufo Vega Trail winds through unforgiving desert terrain and rocky cliffs, devoid of shade or water, making it perilous to undertake during the summer's sweltering heat.

While rescuers continued their search for the father, they made a devastating discovery at around 8:00 PM local time—a crashed vehicle over the embankment at the Boquillas Overlook. Heatwave tragedy: Man, stepson lose lives during Texas hiking expedition

Former Congressman of the US state of Texas, Will Hurd, on Thursday (June 22) announced that he is running for the upcoming presidential elections. Hurd, a Republican and one-time Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer, has been a fierce critic of Donald Trump.

As per media reports, Hurd would also become the first Texan with experience in elective office to enter the Republican primary and is hoping to be a more moderate alternative to the Republican primary field’s early front-runners. 'Hurd for America' submitted a candidacy filing with the Federal Election Commission, on Thursday.

Hurd announces his White House bid

The Texas lawmaker made the announcement on CBS Mornings where he made an appearance and said, “This morning I filed to be the Republican nominee for president of the United States.” The 45-year-old, who was the first elected to serve Texas’s 23rd Congressional District in 2014, has now entered the US presidential race with 11 other Republican candidates.

During the interview with CBS, Hurd said that he decided to run after he and his wife realised that “we live in complicated times". The Texas Republican also said issues related to education with low scores in maths, science and reading for students were also a factor in his decision, reported CBS.

In a video announcing his bid for the White House, Hurd said, “Our enemies plot, create chaos, and threaten the American Dream. At home, illegal immigration and fentanyl stream into our country. Inflation, still out of control. Crime and homelessness growing in our cities.”

He added, “President Biden can’t solve these problems — or won’t. And if we nominate a lawless, selfish, failed politician like Donald Trump — who lost the House, the Senate, and the White House — we all know Joe Biden will win again.”

Notably, while Hurd is a critic of Trump, he is also not a fan of Biden. Earlier this year, in an interview, he said that another election with the former and incumbent US presidents would be “the rematch from hell”.

Unlike most people from his party, Hurd joins former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson in his willingness to criticise Trump.

The former president continues to be a popular figure among GOP voters with the latest poll by CBS showing that he leads the crowded field of 11 with 62 per cent support among likely Republican primary voters.

Speaking about his other 2024 Republican contenders, during the interview, Hurd also said, “I’m not satisfied with the field as it stands right now. No one is taking on Trump effectively, or presenting a vision for the future.” Furthermore, the former Texas lawmaker also said that he believes the “Republican Party can be the party that talks about the future, not the past.”

Will Hurd: From politician, CIA officer to the White House?

The 45-year-old was first elected to serve Texas’s 23rd Congressional District nearly a decade ago. He represented the state of Texas in Congress between 2015 and 2021, becoming the chamber’s only Black Republican during his final two years in office. Born and raised in San Antonio Texas, Hurd is a child of a White mother and a Black father.

Hurd graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in computer science in 2000 after which he immediately joined the US intelligence agency CIA. Hurd reportedly served as an undercover CIA officer in the Middle East and South Asia as well as on the House Intelligence Committee.

The self-described “dark horse” candidate has been viewed as a moderate on a number of issues. In 2017, he voted against a Republican-led effort to repeal the nation’s health care law, enacted under former US President Barack Obama.

He was also the only Republican in the House from a border district and called the southern “border crisis” a “myth,” while opposing Trump's border wall and supporting citizenship for young undocumented immigrants under the DREAMers programme.

In 2020, Hurd chose not to seek reelection to the House to “pursue opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security.” Notably, most of Hurd’s career has been focused on cybersecurity issues.

However, in 2019, he was reportedly removed as a keynote speaker at a cybersecurity conference because of his past support for Republican-led legislation on abortion restrictions and a bill which would provide financial support for women wanting to pursue science, technology, engineering and maths fields.

Since leaving Congress in 2019, he also worked as a managing director at Allen & Company, served as a board member for OpenAI, as well as trustee of the German Marshall Fund, according to Hurd website.

Aside from Trump, the other Republicans who have announced their bid for the White House include – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Tim Scott (South Carolina), former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, radio host Larry Elder and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez.

US: At least four dead as tornado ravages Texas town, hundreds injured

Thousands of dead fish have washed ashore on a beach along the Gulf Coast of the US state of Texas, local media reported.

The dead fish were found at the far end of Bryan Beach, near the mouth of the Brazos River, some 9.7 km down the coast from Quintana Beach County Park, said officials of the beachfront park located on the upper Gulf Coast.

The park officials, who published photos showing scores of dead fish floating in the coastal waters starting on Friday, said the combination of shallow waters and lack of sunlight created the "perfect storm" to deplete oxygen levels inshore, reports Xinhua news agency.

Despite ongoing cleanup efforts, thousands more fish are expected to wash ashore, local media reported.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. In a recent development, state politicians have for several years presented a variety of bills and legislation controlling the lives of transgender Americans as the discussions over transgender rights continue to boil in the United States. Texas is now the biggest state in the United States to prohibit young people's access to such care after Texas Governor Greg Abbott approved a law banning the treatment of transgender miners.

The Texas House moved to impeach the state’s Attorney General Ken Paxton, on Saturday (May 27), in a historic vote, alleging that his conduct included a slew of abuses of his office. The impeachment, which was the first time in decades, followed a vote from the 149-member Republican-led Texas House where Paxton had been accused of abuse of office by his fellow GOP members.

Proceedings and the vote

The three-term attorney general and former United States President Donald Trump ally, Paxton, was immediately suspended after the House of Representatives in Texas voted 121-23 to impeach him after hours of debate on the 20 articles, which included allegations of bribery and abuse of public trust filed against him.

During the debate, the House chamber heard speeches from both supporters and opponents of the impeachment. The decision followed a majority vote against Paxton, with two members present but not voting, while three were absent. After the vote, the now-suspended attorney general took to Twitter and denied the accusations and denounced the proceedings as “illegal, unethical, and profoundly unjust.”

He added, “I look forward to a quick resolution in the Texas Senate, where I have full confidence the process will be fair and just.” However, Paxton’s permanent ouster is still pending trial from the US Senate where his wife Angela Paxton is a senator. As per the Texas Senate website, they are in recess until 1:00 pm (local time), on Sunday.

The debate also comes after the five-member Texas House General Investigating Committee voted unanimously, on Thursday, and recommended that Paxton be impeached and removed from office.

The development also comes at a time when divides inside the Republican Party are becoming more apparent in Texas. “Attorney General Paxton continuously and blatantly violated laws, rules, policies and procedures,” said Representative David Spiller.

Spiller, who was also a part of the House investigative committee, also revealed that the investigation against Paxton has been going on for months. On the other hand, John Smithee, a long-time conservative member of the chamber, said while he is not defending Paxton’s actions, he criticised the process and said there was not sufficient evidence for the proceedings.

“There is not one word, not one sentence in the testimony before you that would be admissible in any Texas court of law,” said Smithee, adding that “It is hearsay within hearsay within hearsay.” Ahead of the vote, on Saturday, Trump had also taken to his social media platform Truth Social and vowed to “fight” if the Republican-led Texas House were to impeach Paxton.

Why is Paxton being impeached?

The Republican-led committee had 20 articles of impeachment against Paxton following the vote, accusing him of a long list of abuses, including accepting bribes, failing to perform his official duties, obstructing justice in a separate securities fraud case that is pending against him, lying on official documents and reports, and abusing the public trust.

This includes conducting an alleged sham investigation against whistleblowers in his office whom he fired, felony securities fraud charges from 2015, and an ongoing FBI investigation into corruption accusations, among other offences.

Proceedings and the vote The three-term attorney general and former United States President Donald Trump ally, Paxton, was immediately suspended after the House of Representatives in Texas voted 121-23 to impeach him after hours of debate on the 20 articles, which included allegations of bribery and abuse of public trust filed against him. During the debate, the House chamber heard speeches from both supporters and opponents of the impeachment. The decision followed a majority vote against Paxton, with two members present but not voting, while three were absent. After the vote, the now-suspended attorney general took to Twitter and denied the accusations and denounced the proceedings as “illegal, unethical, and profoundly unjust.” He added, “I look forward to a quick resolution in the Texas Senate, where I have full confidence the process will be fair and just.” However, Paxton’s permanent ouster is still pending trial from the US Senate where his wife Angela Paxton is a senator. Texas mall shooting: 'Gun-loving' former Army officer pushes for gun control. Know why

As the end of Title 42 looms, United States President Joe Biden’s administration and the Texas state government, as of Monday (May 8) have deployed thousands of security personnel to the country’s border with Mexico in a bid to prepare for a possible increase in illegal immigration.

This comes as Washington has moved to lift the controversial Title 42, on Thursday, implemented by former US president Donald Trump to deny entry to migrants, including asylum seekers, based on the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is happening on the US-Mexico border?

A report by news agency Reuters, citing sources, said hundreds of specialised investigative agents and air marshals from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were moved from their day-to-day duties to help with border management. However, the move has received some pushback from employees who argue they are being reassigned to menial tasks, the report added.

Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, on Monday, announced that members of the specially trained National Guard unit, who are called the Texas Tactical Border Force, will be deployed with Black Hawk helicopters. He added that some 10,000 personnel of the National Guard and security forces are to be deployed along the 2,000-kilometre border.

He also said that the personnel deployed will have access to aircraft, boats, night vision equipment and riot gear.

“They will be deployed to hot spots along the border to intercept to repel and to turn back migrants who are trying to enter Texas illegally,” said Abbott, while addressing a press conference.

Notably, the Texas governor, a Republican, has also criticised the Democratic president’s approach to border security. Separately, the Biden administration had also previously announced the deployment of 1,500 additional troops to help secure the US-Mexico border this week.

Some 180 US Air Marshals will also be pulled from their day-to-day duties of securing air travel to help at the border, said Sonya LaBosco, executive director of the Air Marshal National Council, who has also opposed the deployment, as per Reuters. La Bosco said that the air marshals will not perform law enforcement activities but rather deal with transportation, security and other tasks.

Title 42 and what is being expected?

The Title 42 order was signed by Trump back in 2020 which allowed US authorities to expel migrants to Mexico without the chance to seek US asylum. However, since the policy is now ending, it is expected to lead to a rise in border arrivals given the pent-up demand.

“We are dealing with a number of people never seen before who have crossed the border and this year we will set a new historic record,” said Abbott. This also comes as the US Customs and Border Protection’s most recent data shows that the number of processed crossings on the US southwestern border witnessed a rise of at least 25 per cent between February 2023 and March 2023.

Texas deploys thousands of security forces personnel along Mexico border ahead of Title 42 end

At least eight people were mauled to death in Brownsville, Texas, on Sunday after an SUV ploughed into a group of people, at a bus stop near a homeless shelter. The man accused and later identified has been charged with eight counts of manslaughter, said the local police chief on Monday (May 8). This comes as the investigators are now trying to determine if the crash was intentional.

The man, later identified as 34-year-old, George Alvarez, seemingly lost control after he ran a red light on early Sunday and ploughed into a crowd of mostly Venezuelans outside a migrant centre, said the Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda said at a press conference, on Monday. The vehicle hit 18 people after which it flipped on its side.

According to the police chief, six people died on the scene and 12 people were critically injured, it was not until later that officials confirmed that the death toll had risen to eight. The driver attempted to flee the scene after impact but was held down by several bystanders, he added. Alvarez has now been charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, said Sauceda.

Meanwhile, the officials are also awaiting toxicology reports on Alvarez to see if the accused was intoxicated at the time of the incident. The police chief also said that there was no motive that he could discuss, but that the authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the crash was intentional. Alvarez has an extensive criminal history, said the police chief and was being held on a bail set at $3.6 million.

“George Alvarez is a Brownsville local with an extensive rap sheet,” said Sauceda, while displaying a long list of previous charges against the accused which included assault, burglary and driving while intoxicated.

“It has been a very tiresome process but we are deeply committed to doing and accomplishing,” said Sauceda, adding that the police department is also working with the Venezuelan government and other embassies. SUV driver plows into migrants standing at Texas bus stop; Eight dead, several injured

Another shooting incident rocked the United States when a gunman shot and killed eight people and injured at least seven others at a busy mall north of Dallas on Saturday (May 6).

The gunman has been identified as Mauricio Garcia, officials said, further adding that the suspect had apparently interacted with neo-Nazi and white supremacist content online, NBC News reported, citing two senior law enforcement officials.

But the reports are being probed as a law enforcement official told Associated Press that federal officials are looking to identify the motive behind the deadly attack.

In its report, the US-based media outlet further mentioned that the 33-year-old suspect posted such content himself. He also consumed such content online and had several social media accounts. The accounts were not verified yet.

The gunman was killed by a police officer and the authorities reportedly found him with a patch, which had a right-wing acronym, on his chest.
