Elon Musk's net worth surged to $500 billion, making him the first person in history to reach this milestone. This was primarily driven by a rebound in Tesla's shares and the increasing valuations of his AI startup xAI and rocket company SpaceX. The Tesla board also proposed a $1 trillion compensation plan for Musk.

Elon Musk's Tesla hits Indian road for first time - Who owns it?

Elon Musk, who has achieved the title of the richest person in the world, could soon become the world’s first trillionaire. This would be possible if he meets the performance goals as per a proposal by the Tesla board on Friday (Sep 5). If the pay package is approved by the shareholders in a vote on November 6, the new proposal could allow the CEO to earn unprecedented sums of money.
What is in the new proposal?
According to Tesla’s board, the plan is linked with Musk’s ability to transform the company from an electric vehicle manufacturer into an AI and technology-driven powerhouse with expansion in areas like autonomous systems, artificial intelligence products and robotics, The New York Times reported. The plan is expected to be put to a vote at an annual meeting on November 6.
Can Musk become a trillionaire?
Currently, Musk has a net worth of more than $400 billion, as per Forbes. The new pay could add an additional $900 billion to his wealth. However, it is only possible if the value of Tesla stocks increases significantly in the coming years. To achieve this, the company’s stock would need to reach an overall value of $8.5 trillion. This is significantly higher than the current market capitalisation of $1.1 trillion and roughly double the current market value of Nvidia, the most valuable company on the market as of now. Tesla (TSLA) shares were slightly higher in premarket trading on the news.Musk would need to remain at Tesla for at least seven and a half years to cash any of the shares, and 10 years to gain the full amount. He would need to meet various ambitious operational milestones, including commercial deployment of a million autonomous taxis and humanoid robots. He would also need to increase his profit by 24-fold.
Challenges faced by Musk
The elaborate pay plan is also expected to be slammed by some shareholders, who have alleged that the CEO has performed poorly in recent years. Musk has faced increasing criticism, especially for his role in the US President Donald Trump’s government as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, which has damaged the company.

The race for robotaxis is heating up in the United States. Tesla Cybercab and Alphabet-owned Waymo are leading the charge, but they are taking very different paths. Their strategies show two competing visions of how the future of driverless transport might look.
Tesla’s rapid approach
Tesla began trialling its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, in June 2024. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promised that by the end of this year in a X post, driverless Teslas could be available to ‘Half the population of the U.S.’ Tesla’s technology relies mainly on cameras and artificial intelligence to mimic human driving. According to the company, this approach reduces the need for detailed maps and lengthy testing in every city. Musk told analysts earlier this year, ‘Once we can make it basically work in a few cities in America, we can make it work anywhere.’ Tesla believes this will allow it to expand much faster than competitors. Musk has even set a target of ‘Millions of Teslas operating autonomously’ by next year. However, the vehicles are still in testing, and approvals in new states such as Arizona, Nevada and Florida are pending.
Waymo’s cautious strategy
Waymo, by contrast, has been testing autonomous ride-hailing for more than eight years. It launched its first trial service in Phoenix and now operates in parts of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta and Phoenix. Its services cover areas with about 3 per cent of the U.S. population. Waymo’s method is slower but more detailed. The company maps each city thoroughly before launching. Vehicles are tested first with drivers at the wheel, then with employees as passengers, before finally opening to the public. According to Waymo product manager Aman Nalavade, We really need to understand the core ingredients of each of these cities. There is a lot of risk in doing this incorrectly. Waymo relies on sensors, high-definition maps and step-by-step decision-making in its AI. This makes it safer in the short term, analysts say, but also harder to scale quickly.
Investors and risks
Many investors are betting on Tesla’s faster growth. Morningstar analysts (March 2024 report) projected that Tesla may launch fully autonomous robotaxis by 2028 and eventually surpass Waymo’s market share. But they also expect Waymo to ramp up more quickly in the near term because of its tested technology. Tesla faces pressure as its core electric vehicle sales have slowed, particularly in Europe. The robotaxi project could become a vital new revenue stream if it succeeds. Waymo, meanwhile, has faced setbacks too. In Austin, police recorded cases where its vehicles blocked traffic or ignored signals. Authorities have issued citations to the company’s cars this year. Waymo said it takes such feedback seriously and is working with officials to improve its technology.

The tesla robotaxi battle is heating up as Tesla and Waymo take very different paths. Tesla is betting on speed and scale with AI-driven cars, while Waymo focuses on safety and detailed mapping. Both are racing for dominance in a multi-trillion-dollar market. Know more, read more below.

Elon Musk’s political stint continues to prove costly for Tesla. The carmaker is facing drastic decline across countries, majorly in Europe and China. In the first half of this year, Tesla sales plunged by half or more in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Netherlands.

Tesla’s recent quarterly earnings report revealed a sharp drop in revenue, marking its biggest decline in over a decade. The company’s second-quarter revenue fell 12 per cent to $22.5 billion, down from $25.5 billion in the same period last year. Despite efforts to refresh its Model Y and expand into autonomous vehicle services, Tesla continues to grapple with the impact of external challenges, including political tensions and regulatory shifts. Tesla's declining revenue was attributed to several key factors, including a significant drop in vehicle deliveries, which fell by 14 per cent in the second quarter. Additionally, the expiration of federal tax credits for electric vehicles, part of a sweeping fiscal package introduced by US President Donald Trump, added pressure. The loss of these green incentives is expected to further hit Tesla's sales in the coming months. CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the company’s struggles during an earnings call, stating that Tesla could face "a few rough quarters" as it adjusts to the changing regulatory landscape. The elimination of tax incentives and the impact of higher tariffs, especially on foreign-sourced vehicle components from China, have created an uncertain environment for the electric vehicle maker. Tesla’s operating margin also fell, dropping to 4.1 per cent from 6.3 per cent a year earlier.
Musk’s political activity contributes to brand damage
Tesla’s struggles are also compounded by Musk’s increasing political involvement. His recent political activities, such as his controversial support for former President Trump’s policies and his launch of a new political party, the “America Party,” have attracted criticism. Musk’s close association with Trump, along with his tenure at the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which led to significant federal layoffs, has alienated some consumers and investors. This fallout appears to have hurt Tesla’s brand image, particularly in Europe and the US.Musk’s shifting political allegiance, including endorsements of far-right parties, has raised questions about his focus on Tesla and whether his political actions could further damage the company's reputation.
Robotaxis and AI as Tesla’s future growth drivers
Despite the challenges, Musk remains optimistic about Tesla's future growth, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous driving. Tesla launched a robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, last month as part of its push toward self-driving technology. Musk emphasised that the rollout of robotaxis and the company's AI-powered humanoid robots would become central to Tesla’s long-term success.Additionally, Musk reiterated Tesla’s efforts to build a more affordable electric vehicle, which is expected to begin mass production by the second half of 2025. Tesla has expanded its Robotaxi business in Austin, Texas, and the map of the area covered is raising eyebrows. The robotaxi geofence has a phallic shape, and some people think that the only reason Musk expanded the map was to indulge in some juvenile-level humour. The new map was rolled out on July 14, and some of the first ones to use it noticed an odd pattern - the geofence looks like a penis. There is no clarity on whether it was intentional; however, Musk's own words accompanying the map and the expansion hint that he is well aware of what he has done. The Tesla CEO reposted a photo of the Robotaxi geofence with the words - “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." The official Robotaxi account also announced the new areas covered with the penis-shaped mask, in a post that read: “Just expanded our surface area… We’re big eggplant fans!” Musk then quote-tweeted the post, with the phrase, “Bigger, longer and uncut,” followed by a laughing emoji. An expert observer wrote in Electrek that this latest expansion, adding new areas in Austin, serves no functional purpose and seems intended purely to indulge Musk’s well-known taste for juvenile humour. He also pointed out the billionaire's fixation with the numbers "69" and "420." Others also think that the new geofencing has no practical justification. As the penis-shaped Robotaxi map went viral, criticism also started pouring in. Musk is unfazed by it and took a jibe at the media in another post on X, “And they take themselves so seriously."
Tesla employee in front seat of Robotaxi with hands on kill switch
After being launched in June, Tesla's Robotaxis were only available to a few tech influencers and investors in Zilker, South Lamar, South Congress, East Riverside Otorff, and part of the Lakeshore and the Rainey Street Historic District. At the time, Waymo's geofence was about twice as large, Business Insider reported. The Robotaxi had a Tesla employee in the front seat with a finger on a kill switch at all times. It offered rides in Robotaxi on an invite-only basis for $4.20 a ride. Musk had announced last week that the Robotaxi service area would be expanded by the weekend. In April, he said that the company would rapidly "scale up robotaxis after the launch", and by the second half of 2026, "millions of Teslas" would be out and about on the streets. https://www.wionews.com/videos/musk-s-ai-company-apologised-over-few-anti-semitic-posts-by-its-grok-chatbot-1752387317088/embed Questions are now being raised about how serious Musk is about the Robotaxi. Tesla share prices are down about 20 per cent since Donald Trump was elected president last year. Musk's has since led a non-govt department DOGE to cut down on federal costs followed by a very public spat with the president.

Robotaxi Austin map: Tesla Robotaxi in Austin has expanded into newer areas, and the geofencing map of the service now looks like a penis. Musk retweeted the photo with the words Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, and people think the phallic shape might be intentional.

Also Read: Amid feud with Donald Trump, Elon Musk's AI firm bags crucial US government contract Other users pointed out that Tesla's geofence is now larger than Waymo's by a few square miles. Musk is unfazed by it and took a jibe at the media in another post on X, “And they take themselves so seriously." Billionaire Elon Musk’s Tesla is set to open its first showroom in India on Tuesday (Jul 15). The electric car maker is expected to start deliveries as early as next month, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Grok AI will be available in Tesla cars next week "at the latest," the EV manufacturer's CEO, Elon Musk, said in an X post on Thursday (July 10). Musk's AI company xAI rolled out Grok 4, its new flagship AI model, on Wednesday (July 9). Although Musk had previously announced that Tesla cars would have Grok, the billionaire CEO has not revealed a timeline.

What is Grok?
Grok is a generative AI chatbot developed by xAI, Musk's AI company. It came out in late 2023 and has had multiple quick updates since then. The most recent version- Grok 4- came out this week and boasts improved reasoning skills, quicker response times and the ability to tackle sophisticated tasks such as solving math problems or creating visuals on the fly. Also Read: Elon Musk’s Grok 4 is smarter than PhD holders, but it might lack common sense! It's also been built to work together with several AI agents internally, so it's more comfortable working with high-level thought and multi-step directives. Previous iterations of the chatbot were criticized for generating objectionable content, which is why xAI has included more stringent filters and moderation systems in the latest version.
How it will work in Teslas?
In Tesla vehicles, Grok will be a hands-free voice assistant that can respond to natural language prompts. Drivers will be able to ask questions regarding routes, traffic or vehicle diagnostics and Grok will provide responses in real time. The system is being trained to be conversational and context-aware, with the aim of making in-car interaction more intuitive and smoother. The assistant will be integrated into the Tesla interface itself, meaning drivers will not have to use third-party software or devices. Also Read: Grok under fire: Turkey to launch probe into Musk-owned chatbot - Here's why

Tesla saw a modest rebound in the UK last month, with new car sales rising 12 per cent year-on-year in June, according to fresh data from research group New AutoMotive. The US electric vehicle (EV) maker delivered 7,891 vehicles in the UK in June, up from 7,019 during the same month in 2024. The boost coincided with the start of deliveries for an updated Model Y.Overall, the UK’s new car registrations rose 12.8 per cent in June to 187,655 units, driven by a 45.5 per cent surge in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales. Despite this sector-wide boom, Tesla’s year-to-date sales in Britain remain nearly 2 per cent lower than in the same period last year, indicating that June’s uptick may not signal a sustained trend.June’s improvement comes on the heels of a dismal May for Tesla in the UK, when sales tumbled more than 45 per cent year-on-year. The company sold just 1,758 vehicles in May, down sharply from 3,244 a year earlier. That plunge came amid rising criticism of CEO Elon Musk’s increasingly polarising political presence in Europe and mounting competition from rivals, particularly Chinese automakers.
Tesla is slowing its grip in European markets
Indeed, Tesla’s position across Europe is showing clear signs of erosion. In Q1 2025, the company posted steep sales declines in almost every major European market. According to registration data compiled by Reuters, Tesla's sales plummeted by 62.2 per cent in Germany, 55.3 per cent in both Sweden and Denmark, 49.7 per cent in the Netherlands, and 41.1 per cent in France. Other notable declines were seen in Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Italy, contributing to an unweighted average drop of over 30 per cent across the region. This downturn is not due to a shrinking EV market, far from it. European EV sales grew 22 per cent in Q1, with strong gains in countries like the UK, Spain, and Italy. Tesla's slipping sales and shrinking market share reflect deeper challenges: ageing vehicle models, intensified Chinese competition from brands like BYD, and the polarising public image of its CEO.Even in the UK, Tesla’s only bright spot in Q1, its market share declined by more than four percentage points, despite slight growth in total unit sales. As competitors gain ground and European EV adoption accelerates, Tesla faces a critical juncture, and if the company does not take any immediate action, its dominance in key global markets may continue to fade.

Why Elon Musk's Tesla is not just a car company?

One of Elon Musk's close confidants and a powerful executive at Tesla, Omead Afshar, has left the company. The high-level exit comes at a time when the electric car company is struggling amid uncertainty. Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The reason for his exit and his future plans were not clear. The news has circulated among some employees internally in recent days, added the report. Did Elon Musk fire his close confidant? Top Tesla executive exits amid declining sales

Tesla’s grip on the European electric vehicle (EV) market continues to weaken, with its sales in the region falling sharply in May, even as the broader auto market staged a modest recovery driven by hybrids and more affordable electric options available. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Tesla’s new registrations in the EU, UK, and EFTA countries dropped 27.9 per cent year-on-year in May to just 13,863 vehicles. This marks the fifth consecutive monthly decline for the American EV company in one of its most important overseas markets. Year-to-date, Tesla’s sales in Europe are down a steep 37.1 per cent compared to 2024. This downturn comes against a backdrop of improving overall auto sales in the region. New-car registrations rose 1.9 per cent in May from a year earlier, reaching 1.11 million units. The growth was driven by strong performances in key markets like Germany, Spain, and the UK, even as France dragged on the total. But Tesla’s decline stands in stark contrast to the broader EV segment, which remains one of the fastest-growing categories.
Rivals gain, Tesla falls behind
Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe surged 27.2 per cent year-on-year in May to nearly 193,500 units, raising their share to 17 per cent of the overall market. Hybrids, particularly plug-in variants, also posted strong gains. Plug-in hybrid sales soared by 46 per cent to over 100,000 units, reflecting growing consumer preference for alternatives that offer electric range without full reliance on charging infrastructure.Chinese automakers, led by BYD and SAIC’s MG brand, are rapidly filling the space left by Tesla’s shrinking footprint. Chinese brands more than doubled their share of the EU market to 5.9 per cent in May from 2.9 per cent a year earlier, registering over 65,800 vehicles across 28 European markets, according to JATO Dynamics. The rise of Chinese players has come despite steep EU tariffs imposed on Chinese-made electric vehicles. Companies like BYD have swiftly responded to the tariffs by pivoting toward hybrids and gasoline-powered models, which are exempt from the tariffs. The result, BYD electric vehicles outsold Tesla in Europe in April and nearly matched it in May.Tesla’s challenges are compounded by an ageing product lineup. Its flagship Model Y and Model 3 face growing competition from newer, cheaper alternatives with more up-to-date technology. European carmakers such as Volkswagen, Renault, and Stellantis are also ramping up their EV offerings, further squeezing Tesla’s market share.Tesla’s European market share has dropped from 1.8 per cent to just 1.2 per cent, underscoring the scale of its retreat. In Germany, Europe’s largest car market, Tesla sales were down more than one-third compared to the same month last year, despite an overall rise in EV sales. The gap is especially stark when compared to BYD, whose sales in Germany have increased ninefold.
Price, politics, and production challenges
Several factors are contributing to Tesla’s decline in Europe. Price remains a major hurdle. While Tesla has adjusted pricing several times, its vehicles still sit above the entry-level EVs and hybrids now flooding the market. Moreover, the cost advantage of EVs is diluted in countries where charging infrastructure remains underdeveloped or electricity costs are high, pushing buyers toward hybrids.Consumer perception is another issue. Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s vocal political affiliations, particularly his public support for far-right parties in Germany, France, and the UK, have drawn backlash from European consumers. The brand has faced increasing resistance, with reports of buyer boycotts and a souring public image, especially in progressive urban markets that were once key Tesla strongholds.Production location also matters. Chinese competitors are moving quickly to sidestep tariffs by building factories in Europe. BYD, for example, plans to begin manufacturing vehicles in Hungary and Turkey by 2026, which will exempt them from EU import duties and likely lead to even lower retail prices. Tesla, in contrast, continues to rely heavily on its Shanghai Gigafactory for European supply, subjecting it to additional tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles.
EU market shifts, Tesla’s path forward
While Tesla’s position weakens, the European auto market is undergoing a transformation. Sales of petrol and diesel cars fell 19.5 per cent and 27.6 per cent, respectively, in May. The momentum is clearly with electrified vehicles, both pure EVs and hybrids, which are benefiting from consumer incentives, regulatory pressure, and greater model diversity.Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi, Skoda, and Seat, remains dominant with a 28 per cent EU market share. Stellantis, despite recent struggles, holds 16 per cent. Tesla, by contrast, is becoming a niche player. Legacy brands are also benefiting from updated models and aggressive pricing, areas where Tesla’s innovation cadence has slowed.Tesla’s focus appears to be shifting toward future technology bets like autonomous driving and robotaxi services, as seen in its recent launch of a fully driverless service in Austin, Texas. But for now, in Europe, Tesla’s decline is stark amid regulatory complexity, political optics, and fierce competition.

May sales of Tesl plunge 27.9 per cent as EV competition intensifies and consumer sentiment shifts. The company will need more than just software to reverse its fortunes in the world’s most competitive EV battleground.

Chinese automakers, led by BYD and SAIC’s MG brand, are rapidly filling the space left by Tesla’s shrinking footprint. The result, BYD electric vehicles outsold Tesla in Europe in April and nearly matched it in May. Tesla’s challenges are compounded by an ageing product lineup. Its flagship Model Y and Model 3 face growing competition from newer, cheaper alternatives with more up-to-date technology. European carmakers such as Volkswagen, Renault, and Stellantis are also ramping up their EV offerings, further squeezing Tesla’s market share. Tesla’s European market share has dropped from 1.8 per cent to just 1.2 per cent, underscoring the scale of its retreat. In Germany, Europe’s largest car market, Tesla sales were down more than one-third compared to the same month last year, despite an overall rise in EV sales. The gap is especially stark when compared to BYD, whose sales in Germany have increased ninefold. Price, politics, and production challenges Several factors are contributing to Tesla’s decline in Europe. Price remains a major hurdle. While Tesla has adjusted pricing several times, its vehicles still sit above the entry-level EVs and hybrids now flooding the market. Moreover, the cost advantage of EVs is diluted in countries where charging infrastructure remains underdeveloped or electricity costs are high, pushing buyers toward hybrids. Consumer perception is another issue. Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s vocal political affiliations, particularly his public support for far-right parties in Germany, France, and the UK, have drawn backlash from European consumers. The brand has faced increasing resistance, with reports of buyer boycotts and a souring public image, especially in progressive urban markets that were once key Tesla strongholds. Production location also matters. EU market shifts, Tesla’s path forward While Tesla’s position weakens, the European auto market is undergoing a transformation. Sales of petrol and diesel cars fell 19.5 per cent and 27.6 per cent, respectively, in May. The momentum is clearly with electrified vehicles, both pure EVs and hybrids, which are benefiting from consumer incentives, regulatory pressure, and greater model diversity. Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi, Skoda, and Seat, remains dominant with a 28 per cent EU market share. Stellantis, despite recent struggles, holds 16 per cent. Tesla, by contrast, is becoming a niche player. Legacy brands are also benefiting from updated models and aggressive pricing, areas where Tesla’s innovation cadence has slowed. Tesla’s focus appears to be shifting toward future technology bets like autonomous driving and robotaxi services, as seen in its recent launch of a fully driverless service in Austin, Texas.

Europe hits the brakes on Tesla as Chinese rivals and hybrids surge

Tesla’s long-awaited foray into autonomous ride-hailing began on June 22, in Austin, Texas, marking a pivotal moment in Elon Musk's ambitious vision for the future of transportation. A fleet of approximately 10 Model Y SUVs will operate in a geofenced area of the city, offering a limited, invitation-only robotaxi service to early testers. This marks the first real-world deployment of Tesla's autonomous driving technology, but the service will be heavily restricted. Trips will be unavailable in bad weather, and passengers under 18 will be excluded. Additionally, a Tesla safety monitor will sit in the front passenger seat during the initial phase of testing.Tesla plans to expand the service to up to 1,000 vehicles within months, with Musk teasing the eventual introduction of a fully autonomous “cybercab” that will operate without pedals or a steering wheel. However, Tesla has made it clear that safety will remain a priority, with Musk admitting to being “super paranoid” about the rollout’s potential risks. For now, the general public will have to wait as Tesla fine-tunes the technology.
A gamble for Tesla’s future amid growing competition
The robotaxi service is seen as a critical test for both Tesla’s self-driving capabilities and the company’s future business prospects. Investors are banking on autonomous vehicles as a key driver of Tesla’s next phase of growth. Wall Street analysts predict that if the service succeeds, it could push Tesla's market capitalisation to over $2 trillion by the end of next year. However, as Tesla enters the crowded autonomous vehicle space, it faces strong competition from Alphabet’s Waymo, which already operates a commercial robotaxi service in several US cities.Tesla is betting that its vision of using cameras alone, rather than the more commonly employed lidar and radar systems, will be both safer and more cost-effective. But the company is also acutely aware of the risks, having seen competitors like GM’s Cruise and Uber pull back from their own self-driving ambitions following incidents involving fatalities.
Teleoperation and safety concerns
As part of its cautious approach, Tesla will rely on a teleoperation system where remote operators can take control of the robotaxis in certain situations. This method, used by other autonomous vehicle companies like Waymo, allows humans to intervene when a vehicle encounters a scenario it cannot handle on its own. However, experts warn that teleoperation has inherent risks, particularly when it comes to cellular data connectivity, which could experience lag or drop entirely in crucial moments.“The technology may work for a small test deployment, but once scaled up, the risks become more significant,” Philip Koopman, a Carnegie Mellon University engineering professor and autonomous-vehicle safety expert, told Reuters. Tesla’s strategy will be closely scrutinised by regulators and safety advocates, especially as the company pushes for broader deployment.Despite these hurdles, the stakes for Tesla are high. The robotaxi service is poised to redefine the transportation landscape and could serve as a pivotal factor in Tesla’s efforts to maintain its leadership in the electric vehicle and AI-driven industries.

President Donald Trump and Elon Musk's friendship has gone south. This relationship has shifted repeatedly over the past decade, moving from early opposition to public endorsement and, most recently, back to criticism. Here's a rundown of how US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk landed here:

Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 5, 2025

2016 :
In the lead-up to the 2016 US presidential election, Elon Musk publicly criticised Donald Trump’s suitability for office while speaking to media, "I feel a bit stronger that he is not the right guy. He doesn’t seem to have the sort of character that reflects well on the United States." Musk, at the time supported Hillary Clinton. Though, after Trump’s victory, he agreed to serve briefly on two White House advisory boards before eventually stepping down in June 2017 following the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. He posted on social media: “Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world.”
2020: Public Praise from Trump
Despite their earlier differences, Trump, in 2020, publicly praised Musk, even calling him one of the great geniuses' of the modern age and admiring SpaceX’s rocket technology. "Great guy. He’s one of our great brains. We like great brains. And Elon has done a fantastic job", he said. Musk, during this period maintained distance from partisan politics.
2022: Political Shift and Conflict
In May 2022, Musk openly distanced himself from the Democratic Party, criticising it as divisive. He accepted that he had voted for Biden in 2020 but would refrain from supporting Democrats in future. However, in July 2022, Trump attacked Musk at a rally, calling him a 'bulls*** artist'. Musk responded by telling Trump to 'sail into the sunset.' Shortly after, Musk acquired Twitter (now X) and reinstated Trump’s previously suspended account. The reinstatement occurred four days after Trump announced his third presidential campaign.
2023–2024: Endorsement and Deepening Involvement
In May 2023, Musk appeared with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to launch his presidential bid. However, after Trump survived an assassination attempt in a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in July 2024, Musk endorsed him and became a key campaign supporter. He posted on social media platform X: “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery", publicly supporting Trump. The SpaceX CEO also reportedly donated over $270 million to Trump-aligned super PACs and was present at Mar-a-Lago on election night.

In August-October 2024:
In August, Musk and Trump held a conversation on 'X' and both congratulated each other in a wide-ranging chat. Later, Elon expressed that he is 'Willing to serve' the government. In October he even attended Trump's rally in Pennsylvania wearing a 'Make America Great Again' cap which was the slogan of the Trump campaign.
Late 2024–Early 2025:
After Trump’s win, Musk was appointed to co-lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, who later left the role. This department was created via an executive order and Musk became a regular presence at Cabinet meetings even accompanying the President. “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” Trump said in a statement at the time.
January 2025:
At the inauguration of Donald Trump, Musk received lavish praise from the President. "We have a new star. A star is born. Elon!" said Trump.
March-May 2025:
DOGE became highly controversial because it implemented large-scale staff cuts and spending reductions. Musk later concluded his 130-day government role in May 2025, claiming to have saved $175 billion.
June 2025: Fallout and Public Break
In early June, Musk denounced Trump’s key legislative proposal, the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' Act, calling it excessive and damaging, a 'disgusting abomination' that will explode federal budget deficits. 'Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,' Musk said on X. This criticism escalated quickly into an all-out online brawl between Trump and Musk. As President threatened to pull back money in government contracts for Musk's companies, Musk claimed Trump couldn't have won the elections without him.

I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. He even continued to make further claims, eventually dropping a bombshell that the Jeffery Epstein files were not released in full because Donald Trump was involved in the case. Currently, Tesla’s stock have dropped by over 50 per cent, with trade policy instability cited as a factor. Their once-close alliance has again devolved into public discord.

Tesla, the electric vehicle (EV) giant led by Elon Musk, has confirmed that it is not interested in manufacturing cars in India but plans to open showrooms in the country, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on June 2.The announcement came as the Indian government unveiled detailed guidelines for its new initiative aimed at promoting the manufacturing of electric passenger vehicles in India.Under the scheme, global automakers are encouraged to set up manufacturing facilities in India, with significant investments and commitments to local manufacturing. However, Tesla, which had previously shown interest in the Indian market, is not expected to participate in manufacturing under the scheme.“Tesla is more focused on starting showrooms in India, but they are not interested in setting up manufacturing units here,” Minister Kumaraswamy told reporters during a media briefing. While the EV maker has participated in early discussions regarding the scheme, it has not shown interest in moving forward with production plans in India. Other global EV makers show interest in India In stark contrast, other global automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen-Skoda, Hyundai, and Kia have expressed strong interest in the central government’s scheme and are keen to establish manufacturing units in India, according to Kumaraswamy. These companies have already indicated their intent to apply for the scheme once the official application process opens.Tesla’s reluctance to establish a production base in India is not entirely surprising. The company has previously voiced concerns over the country's high import duties, which can reach up to 110 per cent on foreign-made vehicles. However, the Indian government has announced a reduction in customs duties on electric vehicles (EVs) under its new policy, which allows a maximum of 8,000 imported EVs every year to be brought in at a reduced duty of 15 per cent for five years, provided the companies commit to local manufacturing. The scheme is expected to boost the country’s EV industry, generate employment, and align with India’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. To qualify for the reduced import duties, foreign companies must invest at least ₹4,150 crore (approximately $500 million) and meet certain local value addition targets. The window for applying under the scheme will open in the coming weeks, with the government looking to attract global players to set up a manufacturing base in India. While Tesla has opted to focus on imports and showrooms in India, the potential investment by Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and others signals a growing interest in India’s EV sector. The government's push to turn India into a global hub for EV manufacturing is poised to transform the country’s automotive landscape. With the global EV market becoming increasingly competitive, especially with the rise of Chinese EV manufacturers like BYD, the success of India’s new policy could have long-term implications for both the domestic and international automotive industries.

Tesla, the electric vehicle (EV) giant led by Elon Musk, has confirmed that it is not interested in manufacturing cars in India but plans to open showrooms in the country, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on June 2. The announcement came as the Indian government unveiled detailed guidelines for its new initiative aimed at promoting the manufacturing of electric passenger vehicles in India. Under the scheme, global automakers are encouraged to set up manufacturing facilities in India, with significant investments and commitments to local manufacturing. However, Tesla, which had previously shown interest in the Indian market, is not expected to participate in manufacturing under the scheme. “Tesla is more focused on starting showrooms in India, but they are not interested in setting up manufacturing units here,” Minister Kumaraswamy told reporters during a media briefing. These companies have already indicated their intent to apply for the scheme once the official application process opens. Tesla’s reluctance to establish a production base in India is not entirely surprising.
