Tesla was the hottest stock in the market following Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20. 2 months later, the company faces its biggest challenge in years. CEO's Elon Musk stint as a White House advisor has irked lawmakers and investors alike, with 'Tesla Takedown' calls gaining global traction.

Tesla plunges 36% in first quarter, amid recalls and Musk backlash

The revenue numbers for Tesla electric vehicles in major European territories displayed ongoing March decreases which support an emerging trend of customers fleeing support for this brand. The recent sales decline appears during a period where Chinese automakers intensify their market competition along withluges of opposition that target CEO Elon Musk's political stances.
Given the recent data release Tesla recorded its least successful first-quarter sales performance in these three markets since 2021.
The global plunge in automotive market position experienced by Tesla has never been as severe according to British EV campaign group FairCharge founder Quentin Willson who is also a Tesla vehicle owner.
Musk faces controversy because he supports right-wing political parties throughout Europe which leads to decreased sales across the region. Tesla vehicles along with their dealerships have faced rising incidents of vandalism which have been documented in multiple cities such as Rome Berlin and Stockholm.
The president of Italy's Tesla owners club Luca Del Bo said their group feels ashamed about these developments. Every Tesla owner would prefer for Musk to resume solely running the company as CEO.

Tesla investors await data from European markets including Italy that will explain their global first-quarter delivery numbers and consumer reception.
The March performance of Tesla demonstrated a significant decrease when compared to its sales from the previous year. India experienced its worst drop with 36.83% sales decline followed by Sweden which dropped by 63.9% and sales in Norway decreased by just 1%. The Netherlands along with Denmark demonstrated comparable declines in their sales numbers.
As a result of decreased market presence these countries have witnessed Tesla losing its market share resulting in substantial sales reduction to unclassified brands which include Chinese EV manufacturers BYD.
The March sales data increased slightly in Spain and Portugal but all quarterly figures remained negative. Italy experienced a March growth yet followed with a quarterly decrease.
The sales slump comes as Tesla prepares to launch its Model Y mid-size SUV amidst growing competition from Chinese EV manufacturers and increasing consumer resistance due to Musk's political views. Tesla's stock saw a 6.8% increase in New York trade on Tuesday, following a significant drop this year.

Elon Musk is facing global protests over his alleged involvement with the Trump administration. Demonstrations have been held outside Tesla showrooms from Washington to London, with critics voicing concerns over his political influence.

Global Protest Against Musk's Involvement In Trump Administration

While many automakers are feeling the pinch from President Trump's recent auto tariffs, Tesla seems to have avoided the worst of it. Analysts believe that Tesla’s 100 percent US-based production gives it a significant edge. But the main question is: Tesla may have dodged the tariff bullet, but is the road ahead clear?

Tesla defies market trends amid tariff woes

Tesla plans to start selling cars in Saudi Arabia during the next month thus mending CEO Elon Musk's previously strained relationship with the Saudi Arabian kingdom. The company made its decision to enter Saudi markets following tense times that resulted from Musk's attempt to privatize Tesla in 2018.
The largest market of the Middle East remains without Tesla's presence since the automaker maintains operations across other regional countries but has yet to enter Saudi Arabia. The dispute between Musk and Saudi Arabia PIF evolved from a 2018 tweet about securing funding to privatize Tesla through discussions with the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The failed privatization effort set off legal battles with investors while releasing confrontational messages between Musk and PIF director Yasir al-Rumayyan went public.

The relationship between the companies improved after Musk supported Donald Trump during his presidential campaign followed by Trump taking office. Trump wants to build closer relationships with Saudi Arabia and he mentioned arranging a trip to the country.
During its April 10th Riyadh launch event Tesla will present its electric vehicle lineup together with solar power products. Visitors at the event will witness Cybercab autonomous driving demonstrations as well as Optimus humanoid robot demonstrations showcasing Tesla's AI and robotics progress. Attendees of the forthcoming event need to specify which Tesla model they prefer before the invitations become valid.
The company launches its products at a time when Tesla faces deteriorating EV European sales because of Musk's political stance while U.S. taxpayers demonstrate against his public funding reductions.
The Saudi Arabian market for electric vehicles remains slow to develop as per PwC projections it represents only 1% of total sales. The PIF made investments into both Lucid and Ceer which operate rival EV start-up businesses and domestic automobile brands respectively. The large proportion of gasoline-powered transportation and insufficient network of EV charging stations make it difficult for Tesla to enter new markets.
Despite these challenges, Tesla's launch in Saudi Arabia signifies a significant development in the company's global expansion and the restoration of relations with a key Middle Eastern market.

The Canadian government implemented decisive measures regarding Tesla by suspending all rebates to the EV manufacturer and discontinuing its participation in future EV rebate programs. Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland introduced the new measures on Tuesday because of ongoing trade tensions and U.S. tariffs.
Freeland's office stated that rebate payment processing for Tesla will stop until every claim needs individual investigation and successful validation. Under Canadian government orders the transport department modified future iZEV program eligibility standards to eliminate Tesla vehicles from participating throughout "illegitimate and illegal U.S. tariffs" periods.
The government of Canada has yet to hear from Tesla regarding its decision.
The U.S. presidential administration led by Donald Trump established major 25% tariffs that will affect most products from Canada and Mexico during early April. Trump has suggested small loopholes but the American tariff campaign against Canada and Mexico continues unabated.

The Canadian government has stopped distributing CAD 43 million (USD 30.11 million) that Tesla received through its rebate program. Northern Irish newspapers reported about Prime Minister Mark Carney's election announcement on April 28th after Canada stopped making financial payments.
The Toronto Star reported that a Quebec City Tesla dealership filed a mass number of rebate applications worth almost CAD 20 million to obtain public funding for 4,000 vehicle sales during one weekend in late January.
Toronto made this decision after its previous decision to deny incentives for taxis and ride-sharing services because of trade disputes between Toronto and the U.S.
The relationship between President Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk creates additional issues because of his involvement in the White House's goal to lower federal expenditures.
Canada's decision to freeze rebates and exclude Tesla from future programs underscores the escalating trade tensions between the two nations and the potential impact on the automotive industry. The investigations into past rebate claims signal a commitment to ensuring the integrity of the program.

Tesla's dominance in the European electric vehicle market is facing major challenges, with registrations dropping sharply by 49% in early 2025. This decline in sales, especially in January and February, has resulted in a market share dip to a 5-year low of just 9.6% in the broader European region.

Volkswagen and BMW lead Europe's EV sales in 2025

The European market for Tesla experienced continuous year-over-year sales reduction in February despite total electric vehicle (EV) registration growth throughout the continent based on released data on Tuesday. The company faces decreasing market shares because intensified competition confronts it before its upcoming Model Y mid-size SUV launch.
Sales numbers provided by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) show Tesla experienced a 42.6% decrease in European buyer numbers throughout the initial two months of this year. The marketplace divided in February with Tesla occupying 1.8% of overall sales along with 10.3% of the battery-electric vehicle segment while descending from 2.8% and 21.6% during the corresponding period of the previous year.
During February, Tesla moved only 17,000 vehicles in the territories of the European Union and both Britain plus European Free Trade Association countries while reaching above 28,000 vehicle sales in February 2024. The challenging market environment consists of long-established automotive manufacturers along with Chinese start-ups which introduce continuously less expensive EV models.

CEO Elon Musk's attraction to right-wing political entities combined with his political controversialism has damaged Tesla sales.
A sales dip for Tesla failed to stop European countries from doubling their BEV purchases in comparison to February this year while vehicle deliveries overall registered a drop of 3.1%. EU efforts to adopt EVs as part of their strict CO2 emission regulations are responsible for accelerating this market growth.
Tesla established a carbon credit pool together with multiple automakers through an EU filing document which helps them fulfill their emission requirements. This arrangement might be affected by declining Tesla sales figures.
The combined sales of BEV, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles grew to 58.4% in February for the total number of passenger car registrations compared to 48.2% in February of the previous year.
The electric car market in Europe experienced a rapid start to 2025 according to E-Mobility Europe secretary general Chris Heron.
Among major European brands, Volkswagen and Renault saw sales increases, while Stellantis experienced a decline. Chinese automaker SAIC Motor also saw growth, despite EU tariffs on Chinese EVs. The market share of Chinese brands like BYD is also on the rise.
The European EV market is experiencing significant shifts, with Tesla facing increasing competition and traditional automakers and Chinese brands gaining ground.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) started a preliminary investigation for 1.3 million F-150 Ford pickup trucks because many Ford customers reported unwanted gear transitions which could lead to wheel lock-up conditions.
The NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation investigates 138 complaints from users about their F-150 trucks automatically shifting to lower gears while the vehicles travel at highway speeds without warning. Vehicle safe operations were endangered by sudden gear downshifts which reportedly led to quick braking.
Certain complaints document how the vehicle back wheels momentarily experienced locking or seizing or skidding events during gear shift transitions. A reduction in driver control due to this issue would boost the odds of vehicle crashes and injuries as per NHTSA.

The examination started on Friday and analyses Ford F-150 automotive series spanning from 2015 to 2017. NHTSA works to establish the seriousness of any possible defect and analyse its safety connection.
During the investigation no accidents or fires have proven to stem from the documented gear shift difficulty. The possibility of losing control when speeding creates substantial security issues despite other safety considerations.
Ford's F-150 F-150 model faces possible recall due to this investigation which focuses on its popular products. The collaboration between Ford and NHTSA must include reporting all complaints and available potential solutions.
F-150 owners together with the automotive industry will closely monitor the investigation results because this assessment could deliver major consequences for the safety of Ford vehicles and for the business of Ford as a whole.

Only 3% of Germans planning to buy Tesla, says report

US President Donald Trump has compared the recent wave of vandalism targeting Tesla showrooms across the country to the Capitol riot on 6 January 2021, claiming the damage inflicted on Elon Musk&rsquo;s company is far worse.
<h2>'I view these people as terrorists'</h2>
Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office on Friday, Trump said, &ldquo;I view these people as terrorists, just like others. When I looked at those showrooms burning and those cars &mdash; not one or two, like seven, eight, 10 burning, exploding all over the place. These are terrorists. You didn&rsquo;t have that on Jan. 6, I can tell you.&rdquo;

Trump criticised Democrats for not speaking out about the violence against Tesla, accusing them of hypocrisy given their strong condemnation of the Capitol riot, which saw Trump supporters breach Congress in protest of the 2020 election result.
He also referred to the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter killed by Capitol Police during the 6 January events.
&ldquo; You didn&rsquo;t have anything like that on Jan 6, which is sort of amazing because on Jan. 6, the Democrats were talking. Nobody was killed other than a very beautiful young woman, Ashli, Ashli Babbitt. Nobody was killed,&rdquo; he said.

The president went on to claim that the attacks on Tesla were part of &ldquo;an organised event,&rdquo; suggesting that the coordinated appearance of protest signs indicated larger forces at play.
&ldquo; The people that finance it are, in my opinion, in just as big of trouble as the people who are setting the match, starting the fires,&rdquo; Trump said.
Earlier in the day, Trump issued a strong warning to those involved in vandalising Tesla facilities, hinting at severe punishments.

World: Trump criticised Democrats for not speaking out about the violence against Tesla, accusing them of hypocrisy given their strong condemnation of the Capitol riot.

US President Donald Trump has compared the recent wave of vandalism targeting Tesla showrooms across the country to the Capitol riot on 6 January 2021, claiming the damage inflicted on Elon Musk’s company is far worse. 'I view these people as terrorists' Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office on Friday, Trump said, “I view these people as terrorists, just like others. When I looked at those showrooms burning and those cars — not one or two, like seven, eight, 10 burning, exploding all over the place. These are terrorists. You didn’t have that on Jan. 6, I can tell you.” Also read: China war or DOGE cuts? He also referred to the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter killed by Capitol Police during the 6 January events. “You didn’t have anything like that on Jan 6, which is sort of amazing because on Jan. 6, the Democrats were talking. ‘Could get jailed in El Salvador prisons’: Trump threatens ‘terrorists’ harming Musk, Tesla with 20-year jail

Tesla stock falls 42% as Tesla faces quality, demand issues

Tesla was the hottest stock in the market following Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20. 2 months later, the company faces its biggest challenge in years. CEO's Elon Musk stint as a White House advisor has irked lawmakers and investors alike, with 'Tesla Takedown' calls gaining global traction.
In the latest, the company issued a major recall, affecting over 46,000 Cybertrucks in the United States due to faulty exterior panels that could detach while driving. This recall covers the majority of Cybertrucks currently on the road, raising fresh concerns about quality control at the EV giant.
<h2>Tesla stock in reverse</h2>
This recall would be the biggest challenge for any other carmaker, but for Tesla, it's just the tip of the iceberg. The company's stock has plummeted over 40 per cent in 2025, owing to declining demand, ageing vehicle lineup, growing competition, and political backlash. Tesla also leads US vehicle recalls, with its cars accounting for 5.1 million call-backs in 2024 alone. The company's market share dropped to 50 per cent in 2024 from 75 per cent in 2022.
Beyond quality concerns, Tesla is facing mounting political and public backlash. Protests against Elon Musk's policies are escalating, with activists organising the largest coordinated demonstration against Tesla to date. Over 500 protests are planned at Tesla showrooms worldwide on March 29. Protestors oppose Musk's role in government policy changes, including Federal spending cuts and mass layoffs. Meanwhile, Musk and President Donald Trump have labelled these attacks as 'domestic terrorism.'
Analysts warn that growing consumer boycotts could further impact Tesla's brand image and sales, adding to the company's ongoing challenges.

Tesla on trial: Recalls, protests, & falling stock hurt company's financials

Tesla has ordered the recall of almost all Cybertrucks operating throughout the United States because a defect arises in the exterior panel which could become dislodged during vehicle operation. Since January 2024, the Cybertruck has received eight recalls which this Thursday led to a recall of all vehicles produced from November 2023 through February 27, 2024.
Industry analysts project this Cybertruck recall impacts the majority of American vehicles on the road, it creates problems for Tesla while its stock has experienced major declines throughout this year. A stainless steel exterior trim panel which could detach from vehicles poses both road hazard risks and collision hazards to drivers.
Warranty claims about the issue have reached 151 despite no reported collisions or injuries occurring. The detached panel has the capability to create interior vehicle noise or to separate completely from the vehicle. The Cybertruck sales recorded lower demand since the manufacturing delays had occurred while remaining below overall Tesla product distribution numbers.

Research firm AutoForecast Solutions led by VP Sam Fiorani stated that recalling all produced physical items like body panels reveals quality concerns Tesla managed to evade during many years. Building an excellent reputation requires extensive time yet such good reputation can easily fall apart soon.
The company plans to provide refurbished rail panels which meet established durability specifications. The assembly made from original components proved vulnerable to environmental elements when structural adhesive was used. A revised design implements an adhesive that includes welded studs connected through nuts for reinforcement.
The production of vehicles with redesigned trim will start on Friday while preexisting vehicles will get retrofitting completed before reaching customers. The NHTSA received its first report regarding the matter on February 21st.
Despite the recall, Tesla's stock ended marginally higher on Thursday. During a livestreamed "all hands" meeting, CEO Elon Musk praised the Cybertruck's safety ratings but did not directly address the recall.
Analysts believe the recall will have a limited impact on Tesla's March quarter performance, as Cybertruck sales are relatively small compared to other Tesla models. This recall however highlights ongoing quality control challenges for Tesla, and increases regulatory scrutiny.

Elon Musk and Tesla are facing a &ldquo;brand tornado crisis moment&rdquo; and the electric vehicle company's CEO needs to cut back his work for US President Donald Trump to control the damage, one of the biggest supporters of the company said.&nbsp; This comes as Tesla announced the recalling of 46,000 Cybertrucks in the US on Thursday (Mar 20) to fix an exterior panel.

‘They want to kill me’: Musk claims ‘bad people’ want to assassinate him, ‘hurt’ Tesla

Tesla continues advancing its plans to launch robotaxis in California by obtaining its first necessary permit from state regulators. The California Public Utilities Commission granted Tesla a transportation charter-party carrier permit (TCP) on Tuesday.
The TCP allows Tesla to control their vehicle fleet and deliver scheduled transportation to their workforce through this chauffeur service-specific authorization. Autonomous public ride-hailing operations remain prohibited by the terms set in the CPUC permit for Tesla.
A TCP permit serves as the essential foundation for Tesla to develop its plans to introduce a driverless ride-hailing service. As CEO Elon Musk states Tesla intends to launch robotaxis during this year with California and Texas serving as the initial markets. The Cybercab robotaxi concept without steering wheel or pedals designed by Tesla received public attention in last October's appearance.

A fully autonomous robotaxi service operated by Tesla needs approval from both the CPUC and the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in order to provide customers with a charging service. Tesla possesses a DMV permit that permits testing of autonomous vehicles but only when accompanied by a safety driver.
According to the CPUC Tesla applied for the TCP permit in November 2024 but needs to file additional permits before their autonomous service can proceed. The DMV spokesperson clarified that Tesla lacks any additional permits which the CPUC needs to approve autonomous taxi services operated without human operators.
Both slowing sales growth and robotaxi service development occupy Tesla at the present time. Autonomous ride-hailing enables Tesla to explore new revenue opportunities and secure its market share in the changing transportation sector. The approval process to launch a completely autonomous robotaxi service when driver-operated in California is still stalled by bureaucratic obstacles. Tesla did not respond to requests for comments on the permit and details on the other applications.

Tesla secures initial California permit for future robotaxi service

The Toronto city council ended support for electric vehicle (EV) incentives dedicated to taxis and ride-share transportation using Tesla products. On Monday, Mayor Olivia Chow disclosed that the exclusion of Tesla cars was due to current tensions in border trade between Canada and the U.S.
The city's EV promotion strategy delivers fee reductions for vehicle licenses and renewals that members of the hire sector acquire between 2019 to 2029. Starting from March 1st Tesla cars fall out of eligibility for these city-supported incentives.
Mayor Chow stated the U.S. trade disputes need resolution before relaxed rules on licensing fees will be extended to Tesla vehicle owners. She declared that vehicles dedicated to hire services such as taxis should select alternative electric vehicle types for their operation.

Canadian officials decided to reject Tesla vehicles specifically because Elon Musk has close relationships with Donald Trump who implemented Canadian product tariffs and demanded Canada become part of the United States to the outrage of Canadians.
Chow pointed out that the city gives its approval to Tesla customers who want to purchase a car but rejects any expectation of tax subsidies. The financial consequences of the exclusion will remain minimal in her view while she sees this action as holding symbolic value.
The city of Toronto has taken an exclusionary stance against Tesla but has received no official public response from the automaker.
This policy decision demonstrates the developing relationship between local government measures and worldwide trade conflicts. Through its exclusion of Tesla, Toronto wants to display its opposition toward U.S. trade policies but simultaneously promote electric vehicle production from alternative companies. The choice of Toronto to discontinue its incentive program may affect future cities searching for ways to implement complimentary schemes between international trade matters and sustainable targets.

"As a US manufacturer and exporter, Tesla encourages the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to consider the downstream impacts of certain proposed actions taken to address unfair trade practices," Tesla said in the letter.&nbsp;

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a> was handed a pre-written sales pitch by Elon Musk during a Tesla-buying event at the White House on Tuesday, a move widely seen as an effort to promote the electric car company amid growing backlash against Musk&rsquo;s role in a controversial government restructuring.
<h2>'They gave me notes'</h2>
Photographers captured Trump holding note cards detailing the price and specifications of various Tesla models as he inspected the vehicles on display. The president openly admitted the words were not his own. &ldquo; They gave me notes,&rdquo; he said, shuffling through the papers before stepping into one of the cars.

Photos of the document revealed phrases such as &ldquo;SAFEST car,&rdquo; &ldquo;state of the art,&rdquo; and &ldquo;affordable,&rdquo; suggesting Musk had provided Trump with a script to bolster Tesla&rsquo;s image.
The publicity stunt, which critics likened to an unpaid "Tesla advert," followed a sharp 15% drop in Tesla&rsquo;s stock on Monday, the steepest decline in five years. The plunge has been largely attributed to Musk&rsquo;s ties to Trump and the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

He went on to accuse political opponents of unfairly targeting Musk and Tesla. &ldquo;But the Radical Left Lunatics, as they often do, are trying to illegally and collusively boycott Tesla, one of the World&rsquo;s great automakers, and Elon&rsquo;s &lsquo;baby,&rsquo; in order to attack and do harm to Elon, and everything he stands for.&rdquo;
While Trump ultimately did not follow the script word for word, he enthusiastically took on the role of car salesman, sitting behind the wheel of a Tesla as he praised its features.
<h2>Trump's tariffs' effect on Tesla</h2>
However, despite his promotional efforts, Trump&rsquo;s policies have so far hindered electric vehicle sales. He revoked a 2021 order by former president Joe Biden that aimed for half of all car sales to be electric by 2030 and froze unspent government funds for EV charging stations.

Additionally, Trump&rsquo;s tariff policies could negatively impact Tesla. In January, Tesla&rsquo;s chief financial officer, Vaibhav Taneja, warned that tariffs on parts sourced from Canada and Mexico could affect the company&rsquo;s profitability.
Beyond Tesla, Musk&rsquo;s other ventures have also faced setbacks. SpaceX has suffered two consecutive failures in launching its Starship rocket, while its social media platform, X, experienced a widespread outage on Monday.
