For the first time, artificial intelligence (AI) fully automated the process of discovering a supernova as it searched for, detected, confirmed, classified, and announced the findings without any human intervention. Led by Northwestern University, an international team of scientists has created a cutting-edge AI tool known as the Bright Transient Survey Bot (BTSbot).

<h2>What is the AI tool?</h2>

The university has reported that the new system not only allows automation of the entire search for new supernovae across the night sky but also eliminates human error and dramatically increases speed.&nbsp;

BTSbot is a machine-learning algorithm which has been trained by using over 1.4 million images from nearly 16,000 sources, said the researchers in a statement. Scientists have estimated that in the last six years, humans have spent an estimated 2,200 hours visually inspecting and classifying supernova candidates.&nbsp;

“For the first time ever, a series of robots and AI algorithms has observed, then identified, then communicated with another telescope to finally confirm the discovery of a supernova,” said Northwestern’s Adam Miller, who led the work.

He added, “Ultimately, removing humans from the loop provides more time for the research team to analyze their observations and develop new hypotheses to explain the origin of the cosmic explosions that we observe.”

<h2>How does it work?</h2>

The current process of detecting and analysing supernovae involves humans working hand in hand with robotic systems and though supernovae are bright and energetic events, they are not that common, and certainly not easy to spot.&nbsp;

The traditional method involves relying on robotic telescopes repeatedly taking images of the same sections of the night sky to detect new sources of light after which humans take over. Subsequently, astronomers have to visually inspect large volumes of data.&nbsp;

This time-consuming process is believed to be the reason why astronomers have only discovered a small fraction of all supernovae that occur in the universe.

“Automated software presents a list of candidate explosions to humans, who spend time verifying the candidates and executing spectroscopic observations,” Miller explains.&nbsp;

He added, “We can only definitively know that a candidate is truly a supernova by collecting its spectrum – the source’s dispersed light, which reveals elements present in the explosion.”

BTSbot detected the newly discovered supernova named SN2023tyk in data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), said the researchers, which is a robotic camera in the US state of California which scans the northern sky every two days.&nbsp;

This was also after BTSbot automatically requested the potential supernova’s spectrum from Palomar Observatory – where another robotic telescope, the Spectral Energy Distribution Machine (SEDM) performed an in-depth observation to obtain the source’s spectrum.&nbsp;

The spectrum was then sent to SNIascore – developed by Caltech’s Christoffer Fremling, an astronomer – to determine the supernova’s type. “Adding BTSbot to our workflow will eliminate the need for us to spend time inspecting these candidates,” said Fremling.&nbsp;

“This significantly streamlines large studies of supernovae, helping us better understand the life cycles of stars and the origin of elements supernovae create, like carbon, iron and gold,” said Nabeel Rehemtulla, who co-led the development.&nbsp;

This comes days after the European Union said that it is investigating potential violations of its online content rules after X was accused of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/technology/x-removes-hundreds-of-hamas-affiliated-accounts-rebuffs-disinformation-claims-on-israel-war-645932">failing to combat disinformation</a> related to Hamas’ attack on Israel.&nbsp;

<h2>Australian regulators about X&nbsp;</h2>

Earlier this year, multiple tech giants and social media companies, including X and Google, were sent legal notices by Australian regulators asking them to detail their measures for detecting and removing child sexual abuse material.

According to Australia’s eSafety commissioner, some companies responded to reports of abuse within minutes, while others took&nbsp;hours. “Companies can make empty statements like ‘Child exploitation is our top priority,’ so what we’re saying is show us,” Julie Inman Grant said during an interview.&nbsp;

Inman Grant, who was a public policy director for X until 2016, also said that the “only reason” that she saw for failing to answer important questions about illegal content and conduct happening on platforms would be to not have them.&nbsp;

After taking over the social media platform, Musk said in a post that “removing child exploitation is priority #1”.&nbsp;

However, when asked about how the social media platform prevented child grooming on the platform, X told Australian regulators that it was “not a service used by large numbers of young people.”&nbsp;

Australian regulators were also told by X&nbsp;that the available anti-grooming technology was “not of sufficient capability or accuracy to be deployed on Twitter”.&nbsp;

Speaking about the child sexual abuse materials, X said that its detection of such material on the platform had fallen to 75 per cent from 90 per cent in the three months after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/elon-musk-promotes-unvetted-accounts-amid-spread-of-false-war-information-644316">Tesla CEO took over.</a>&nbsp;

The company also told the Australian regulators, that it did not use tools to detect the material in private messages because “the technology is still in development”.&nbsp;

<h2>Google’s case</h2>

Google also came under scrutiny&nbsp;in this context but was let off with a warning after the search engine giant’s responses to some questions were found to be “generic”, said the Inman Grant.&nbsp;

However, Google said that it cooperated with the regulator and found the warning disappointing.&nbsp;

“We remain committed to these efforts and collaborating constructively and in good faith with the e-Safety Commissioner, government and industry on the shared goal of keeping Australians safer online,” said Google’s director of government affairs and public policy for Australia, Lucinda Longcroft, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

There are two kinds of telescopes that are used to peer towards the sky - Optical telescopes, which help capture faint, faraway light sources and enable their study; Radio telescopes, which use giant antennae to capture radio waves from afar and help derive data out of them.

While optical telescopes and observatories are more commonly known, they have a limitation of only operating during the night. However, Radio telescopes can capture radio signals round-the-clock.&nbsp;

Based in a South African desert, the MeerKAT radio telescope comprising 64 antennae is the largest and most sensitive of its kind in the world, so far.

Some interesting observations from this telescope have emerged, thanks to data processing software written by Indian techies.

Known as the 'Automated Radio Telescope Image Processing Pipeline'(ARTIP), it is meant to help process the huge amount of radio signal data generated by the telescope and convert it into data that can be used for scientific studies.&nbsp;

"There is a lot of noise (disturbance) in the radio signals, so that has to be cleaned up, signals have to be calibrated, data processing has to be carried out that's&nbsp;how the ARTIP software speeds up the process for scientists,"&nbsp;Chhaya Dhanani, Portfolio Head Engineering for Research, Thoughtworks, told WION.

A five-member team from Pune, India, working for this global software firm has designed and developed this software from scratch. We have been working on developing this software since 2017 and we had the first version released in 2020 and even now modifications are being made. The data processed using our software has also been released, Dhanani said.&nbsp;

Based on the data derived using our&nbsp;software, the science teams working on it have made multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Among the discoveries made are of OH radicals in faraway galaxies and Rydberg atoms (massive hydrogen atoms) in a distant galaxy, she said. The software processed more than 1 Petabyte (1000Terabytes) of data to arrive at this.

While the data is provided by the software, it is interpreted and studied by the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) team that comprises Indian and South African scientists. The principal investigator in this project is Dr. Neeraj Gupta from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA).

"All science telescopes make use of data processing software and at some point in time, they require human intervention. With ARTIP, we have ensured that manual intervention is not required. The data can directly be studied by the science teams and they can draw observations from it," she added.

The MeerKAT telescope is only a precursor to the world's largest array of radio telescopes - Square Kilometre Array (SKA). MeerKAT is eventually meant to be subsumed into the SKA. The SKA can scan the skies for radio signals, using its unprecedented capabilities. It is capable of generating massive amounts of data, almost comparable to how much the internet does in a day. Thoughtworks' E4R(Engineering for Research) division hopes to scale up ARTIP to aid the teams working with SKA data as well, Chhaya said.&nbsp;

As young children in Sweden went back to school&nbsp;last month, they were met with teachers pushing them to use printed books and engage in quiet reading time as well as handwriting practice, while asking them to devote less time to their tablets, independent online research and keyboarding skills, according to a report&nbsp;by the Associated Press. What changed?

<h2>What prompted this switch?</h2>

According to the Swedish minister for schools, Lotta Edholm, the move has been long overdue, since lawmakers and experts in the country have questioned if their hyper-digitalised approach to education has proven detrimental to children and led to a decline in basic skills.

Edholm, a part of the centre-right coalition government, who took office nearly a year ago has long been critical of this all-out embrace of technology. He announced last month that the government has sought to reverse the national agency for education’s decision to make digital devices mandatory in preschools.&nbsp;

“Sweden’s students need more textbooks,” said the Swedish minister back in March. However, he has planned to take one step forward and end digital learning for children under age six, the ministry has told the AP.&nbsp;

The rapid adoption of digital learning tools also drew concerns from UNESCO which called for an “urgent call for appropriate use of technology in education”. The United Nations agency said that countries should speed up internet connections at schools but warned them to use it in a way that never replaces in-person and teacher-led instruction.

<h2>PIRLS report</h2>

A report by the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)&nbsp;also highlighted that while Swedish students score above the European average for reading ability, it was the international assessment of fourth-grade reading levels that showed a decline among the country’s children between 2016 and 2021.

<h2>How D2M can be utilised on a mass scale?</h2>

The ability to broadcast directly to millions of smart devices and smartphones will be an imperative strategic capability for the national interest. According to the white paper released by IIT-Kanpur,&nbsp;various ways were suggested in which D2M can be utilised effectively on a mass scale.

D2M can ensure-

1. Emergency Alerts are delivered directly, reliably and without dependence on internet/cellular networks.&nbsp;

2. Disaster Management audio content is delivered directly and authentically in a targeted manner.

D2M technology could significantly benefit consumers by allowing them to access live TV on their mobile phones without using data and on the lines of direct-to-home (DTH). This would also help content providers reach a broader audience.

Despite these advantages, telecom operators are concerned about losing revenue from video consumption. Besides that, they also fear the potential harm to their 5G strategies.

DoT is currently carrying out a feasibility study on D2M technology. It is still in the development stage. The biggest challenge in front of the government is to bring different stakeholders, including telecommunications, on board in launching D2M tech on a wide scale.

Swipe right to perfection: Tinder tests AI-powered tool for picking your picture-perfect pose

Last week, two papers by South Korean scientists made an extraordinary claim that sparked a social media frenzy and pushed up prices of some stocks in China and South Korea: the discovery of a practical superconductor.

Superconductors are materials that allow electrical current to flow with no resistance, a property that would revolutionise power grids where energy is lost in transmission as well as advance fields such as computing chips, where electrical resistance acts as a speed limit.

The papers, which appeared on a website used by scientists to share research before formal peer review and publication, spurred researchers around the world - including in at least two U.S. national labs and three Chinese universities - to take a closer look at the proposed material.

Superconducting materials already exist in places like MRI machines for medical imaging and some quantum computers, but only display their superconducting properties at extremely low temperatures, making them impractical for wide use.

The South Korean researchers last week said they found a superconductor that works at room temperature, which has long been considered a holy grail for scientists in the field.

The researchers also published a recipe for making the material - dubbed LK-99 - which involves taking a relatively common mineral called lead apatite and introducing a small number of copper atoms into it.

The South Korean researchers published two papers - one initial paper with three authors and a second, more detailed paper with six authors that included only two of the authors from the first paper. None of the authors contacted by Reuters responded to a request for comment.

Physicists interviewed by Reuters said the good news is that there is no law of physics that says a room temperature superconductor cannot exist, and the material described by the South Korean team is easy to grow, meaning other researchers should be able to start getting results as soon as this week.

The gold standard for proof of discovery is other labs reliably replicating the South Korean researchers' findings.

Researchers from at least three Chinese universities have in recent days said they produced versions of LK-99 with varying results. One team from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology posted a video purporting to show the material levitating over a magnet, which is important because true superconductors can float over a magnet in any orientation, without spinning like a compass.

But another team, from Qufu Normal University, said they did not observe zero resistance, one of required characteristics of a superconductor. A third, from the Southeast University in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, said they measured zero resistance, but only at a temperature of 110 Kelvin (-163 degree Celsius).

On Thursday, South Korean experts said they would set up a committee to verify the claims.

Eric Toone, a scientist-turned investor at Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, said he is monitoring any peer review and reproduction efforts by reputable labs.

"The measurements you need to verify or to demonstrate superconductivity are very difficult to make," said Toone. "It's completely game changing if it's right, but until we have more validation, we just have to be patient."

<h2>'You can be fooled'</h2>

The possible bad news for LK-99 is that the superconducting field is full of materials that hold promise at first but fall apart under scrutiny. Researchers even have a handy name for them - unidentified superconducting objects.

"We call them USOs," said Mike Norman, a condensed matter physicist at Argonne National Laboratory. "There's a long history of USOs going a long way back, including some very famous people who thought they had a superconductor and they didn't. It's like anything in science - you can be fooled. Even good people can be fooled."

Norman said the original papers had problems. Some may have been honest typographical mistakes from rushing to post the research, but more troubling was a lack of data over a broad temperature range to show how the material behaves when it is in a superconducting state and when it is not.

"People often use that method to show how much of the sample is actually a superconductor and how much of it is not," Norman said.

Other researchers have also found reasons for caution. Sinéad Griffin, a solid-state physicist and staff scientist Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, used a U.S. Department of Energy supercomputer to simulate the proposed material.

Griffin found that inserting copper atoms into lead apatite caused the material's atoms to rearrange in an unexpected way that resembles existing superconductors. But that effect depends on the copper atoms going to a spot that they don't naturally want to go, which could make it harder to produce the material in bulk quantities.

Griffin cautioned that her simulation has limits - it cannot conclusively prove that the material is a superconductor, and the work assumed that researchers can place copper atoms into the lead apatite with perfect precision. In the real world, that's unlikely and could have a big effect on the material.

And even if LK-99 does turn out to be a room temperature superconductor, it will still take time to determine how useful it might be, said Michael Fuhrer, a professor of physics at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. For example, Fuhrer said no data was provided on how much electrical current the material might be able to carry and still be a superconductor, a key question for improving power grids.

Still, Fuhrer and other physicists said the results are worth studying given all that remains unknown about superconductors and the possibility that they could be discovered serendipitously in a common material.

"There's lots and lots of minerals out there that we haven't looked at yet," said Argonne's Norman. "And there's probably some very interesting physics hiding in these minerals."

UK data watchdog to make enquiries about Worldcoin crypto project: Report

After over 40 years of Agrentina's mass abduction of babies during the military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s, an Artificial Intelligence artist posted pictures of how the kids would look now, with&nbsp;the hope to reunite them with their families.&nbsp;

The images of a man and a woman were shared on Instagram by an account called IAbuelas by Santiago Barros, the creator. He&nbsp;came up with the idea last year after discovering the Midjourney AI tool, Rest of World reported.&nbsp;

The images were created by splicing photos of the child's parents using Midjourney and then applying the age filter. The end product is a photorealistic portrait of the person in his or her in their current possible look in late forties.&nbsp;

Barros took images from the online archive of Grandmothers for the Plaza de Mayo, an organisation founded by the grandmothers of the kids kidnapped. The grandmothers earlier used to stand outside kindergartens, waiting for their disappeared grandkids.&nbsp;

Clarifying no connection with IAbuelas, the organisation reached out to Barros and published a joint statement saying that it is just an AI art project.&nbsp;

'They are waiting for you'

In a conversation with the Rest of World, Barros said that this is not just important for his family, but for others too. "That's what most important to me- for it to fell like they are looking at you, waiting for you to do something."

However, the images lack credibility. This is because of a "lack of data," as the military kidnapped the kids immediately after their birth and even the gender of many babies wasn't verified, the report said.&nbsp;

The images displayed by IAbeula are not a clear representation of Argentina's ethnic diversity, nor the imperfections that come with age.

"The app tends to show hegemonic portraits," Barros said. "For example, making everyone very thin … I’m working to make the images more diverse, more representative of what Argentines truly are."

Despite the project’s limits, the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo appreciated the spirit behind IAbuelas. It may also use AI portraits for its promotional material.&nbsp;

Barros hopes that his project might do some good amid decades of often fruitless search. He said, "If there’s at least one person that’s inspired by the project and calls the Grandmothers to ask about his or her identity, this will have been all worth it."

The researchers aimed to identify therapeutic interventions that selectively remove senescent cells from the body without harming healthy cells.

Through their AI-driven approach, they discovered three highly selective and potent senolytic compounds.

These compounds exhibit favourable medicinal chemistry properties, increasing their potential for successful clinical outcomes.

Co-lead author Satotaka Omori, Head of the Ageing Biology department at Integrated Biosciences, expressed optimism about the prospects of these compounds in clinical trials and their potential to restore health in ageing individuals.

To predict the senolytic activity of a wide range of molecules, the scientists trained deep neural networks using experimentally generated data.

Leveraging this machine learning model, they screened over 800,000 compounds and identified three compounds that demonstrated high selectivity and potency as senolytics.

These compounds, which bind to Bcl-2 (a protein regulating apoptosis and a chemotherapy target), also exhibited favourable toxicity profiles in hemolysis and genotoxicity experiments.

Speaking via video link at an artificial intelligence conference in Shanghai, Musk expressed his confidence in Tesla's progress towards achieving full self-driving capabilities.

"In terms of where Tesla is at this stage, I think we are very close to achieving full self-driving without human supervision," he said.

While acknowledging that he had previously made predictions that did not come to fruition, Musk emphasised that Tesla is closer than ever to achieving this significant milestone. He said he remains optimistic about the progress being made by Tesla's autonomous driving technology.

"This is only speculation, but I think we'll achieve full self-driving, maybe what you would call four or five, I think later this year."

Musk's latest forecast comes after Tesla faced regulatory scrutiny over its driver-assistance technology in the United States.

Elon Musk expects fully autonomous self-driving Tesla vehicles 'later this year'

The Indian Supreme Court, on Monday (July 3) reopened with a “series of futuristic upgrades”, including paperless and technology-enabled set-up in courtrooms and free wifi for advocates, litigants, media persons and others. The “series of futuristic upgrades” were implemented under the vision of Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud, said the apex court.&nbsp;

<h2>What were the changes made?</h2>

The Indian top court reopened on Monday after the six-week summer vacation, during which it received a technological upgrade. This comes as a part of the new “e-initiatives” in the SC under which the “facility of free Wi-Fi is made available for advocates, litigants, media persons and other stakeholders visiting the Supreme Court of India,” said a statement by the court.&nbsp; 
 
It also indicated that as of now, this facility is available in CJI’s court, court numbers two to five, corridor and Plaza in front as well as both waiting areas in front of the plaza, canteen and Press Lounge –I and II which were to take effect starting July 3. It will be extended to all courtrooms, Bar Library–I and II, Ladies Bar Room, and Bar Lounge in a “phased manner”.&nbsp;

“We have made courts 1 to 5 WiFi-enabled. The bar rooms are Wi-Fi-enabled as well. All courtrooms will now be like that – no books and papers – which is not to say that we will not rely on books and papers at all,” said the CJI, at the beginning of the day’s proceedings on Monday.&nbsp;

He added, “Please give me feedback on whether everything is working well”. The steps were taken as part of the e-initiatives by the Indian SC, said an apex court official, as per the PTI news agency.&nbsp;

<h2>Other ‘futuristic upgrades’ to SC courtrooms</h2>

In a subsequent statement, the top court also said, “A series of futuristic upgrades have been implemented in Court No. 1 to 3 at the Supreme Court of India under the dynamic vision of the Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India, Dr Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud to enhance the use of technology in Judicial Systems.”&nbsp;

The top court has also reportedly sought to go green by making optimal use of technology in justice delivery systems. The courtrooms will now have “a state-of-the-art Digital Video Conferencing (VC) system” for better and more efficient communication and collaboration.

It will also enable remote participation and virtual meetings in courtrooms making them more accessible. “Cable cubbies have been integrated into these courtrooms…(the cubbies) are equipped with LAN connections, HDMI outputs, USB C&amp;A ports along with power sockets,” said the apex court.&nbsp;

It added, “The use of these (cubbies) would help in the integrated use of Multimedia devices while ensuring a clutter-free environment.”&nbsp;

Additionally, the courtrooms have been equipped with a “futuristic LED video wall” for a high-resolution display of camera feeds and also enhances the visual impact of presentations, evidence, and video recordings, creating an immersive and engaging experience, reported PTI.&nbsp;

Addressing the audio-related changes to the courtrooms of the top court, they have been equipped with Front of House (FOH) speakers which have been placed with under-table&nbsp;speakers along with suitable amplifiers to ensure “that every voice and audio source is heard with exceptional clarity.”&nbsp;

This is in addition to new software developed by the Indian Supreme Court which will allow advocates to upload reference material and citations relating to their case. The apex court is also working on software to provide an e-pass facility to the advocates and litigants to access courtrooms, said the SC&nbsp;in a statement.&nbsp;
