As Trump's tariffs are affecting the world's economy at large, China has turned all friendly towards India, stressing that the two "largest developing" countries should "stand together" to overcome the difficulties brought by the ongoing trade war. Spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in India said that China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complimentarity and mutual benefit. Trump tariff: EU chief urges China to avoid escalation over US tariffs

The top US trade official on Tuesday defended President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on nearly every other nation, telling US senators that with dozens of countries seeking a deal the strategy was "already bearing fruit."
Jamieson Greer's appearance in Congress came with Republicans ringing alarm bells over Trump's escalating trade war and Wall Street clamoring for clarity on the president's plans after a historic market sell-off.
"Nearly 50 countries have approached me personally to discuss the president's new policy and explore how to achieve reciprocity," he told the Senate Finance Committee, a figure that other administration officials have also cited.&nbsp;
Several countries -- including Argentina, Vietnam and Israel -- had offered to reduce their tariffs, Greer said, while auto manufacturers were canceling layoffs and companies had announced $4 trillion in new investment in the United States.
The annual hearings on the president's trade policies are often staid affairs.
But they have generated more interest this year after Trump last week announced a baseline tariff of 10 percent and extra levies of up to 50 percent on countries selling more to Americans than they buy in return.
Greer said the country had shed five million manufacturing jobs and 90,000 factories in the last 30 years, since a trilateral free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada was enacted.
"We must move away from an economy based solely on the financial sector and government spending, and we must become an economy based on producing real goods and services," he added.
Senior Republican lawmakers have pledged to allow Trump time to see how his tariff gambit plays out, but are desperate to see progress on trade negotiations they believe will calm markets.&nbsp;
Wall Street stocks surged higher early Tuesday after a three-day rout as global markets rallied in hopes of trade agreements.
<h2>'No clear message'</h2>
But rank-and-file lawmakers remain jittery about the effect of the tariffs and have been demanding briefings on the strategy, with some even seeking to remove Trump's authority to raise import levies.
Republican Senator Chuck Grassley is leading a bipartisan effort to require congressional approval of tariffs within 60 days, although it is not expected to get a floor vote.
Four Republican senators voted with Democrats last week to pass a symbolic resolution to undo Trump's tariff on Canada that does not have the force of law.
Trump himself ruled out any pause in his aggressive new global trade policy on Monday, and threatened to slap an additional 50 percent tariff on China over its retaliation.
He also dismissed the possibility of a trade deal with the European Union and called his critics on trade "weak and stupid" while pledging to veto Grassley's bill.
The top Democrat on the finance committee, Ron Wyden, assailed the White House for having "no clear message" about how Trump determined his tariffs and how long he plans to keep them up.&nbsp;
He suggested Trump was deliberately tanking the economy to bring down interest rates, making borrowing cheaper for the rich.
Greer never had much hope of persuading Democrats over Trump's trade policies, but his overtures did not appear to reassure skeptics on the Republican side either.
"Whose throat do I get to choke if this proves to be wrong?" asked North Carolina free trade advocate Thom Tillis.
Greer's appearance was the first of two annual hearings on the president's trade policies. He will be grilled by the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.

‘Whose throat do I choke if this fails?’: Senators grill Trump’s trade chief as tariffs spark backlash

The United States will slap a 104% tariff on Chinese goods starting from 12:01 AM Eastern Time (12:01 PM Beijing time) on Wednesday, according to a White House official. The move comes after China failed to remove its retaliatory tariffs on American products before a deadline set by Donald Trump for noon on Tuesday.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Donald Trump is taking a &ldquo;custom, tailor-made&rdquo; approach to trade with each country. That could include talks around military presence or foreign aid, depending on America&rsquo;s priorities.
&ldquo;Negotiations will be based on America&rsquo;s needs,&rdquo; she said.

&ldquo;These countries greatly respect President Trump in the sheer power of the American market. These countries realise they've gotten filthy rich by imposing substantial tariffs on American-made products,&rdquo; she said.
She also described Trump as having a &ldquo;spine of steel&rdquo; and insisted he would not back down in the face of retaliatory tariffs, including those from China.

Trump tariff war: Wall Street swings $6 trillion over fake news on tariff pause

A deepening trade row with China could cost US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/blame-china-not-trump-piyush-goyal-says-beijings-malpractices-created-trade-imbalance-8940424">Donald Trump</a> more than he expected; it might threaten his dream aircraft, the F-47 fighter jet that's named after him.
<h2>Beijing hits back with rare earth restrictions</h2>
In response to Trump&rsquo;s decision to raise tariffs on most Chinese imports to 54%, Beijing has imposed new export controls on rare earth elements and key finished products. These materials are vital for advanced electronics, especially in military aircraft.
The move could deal a blow to the US defence industry, just weeks after Trump announced that Boeing had won the contract to build the F-47, a new fighter jet designed to replace the F-22 Raptor and form the core of the US Air Force&rsquo;s future fleet.

<h2>Rare Earths: The hidden weak spot</h2>
China controls around 90% of global rare earth production. These 17 elements are used in a range of industries, including defence, energy, electric vehicles, and electronics. For defence specifically, around 5% of US rare earth usage supports applications like radars, electric motors, and targeting systems.
The F-35 stealth jet, for example, needs about 920 pounds of rare earth materials per aircraft. These are essential in its advanced avionics, radar and flight control systems. The same will likely apply to the F-47.

<h2>What&rsquo;s being restricted?</h2>
China&rsquo;s new rules apply to seven types of medium and heavy rare earths, including samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium. The controls also cover finished goods such as permanent magnets.
Other strategic metals such as tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, molybdenum, and indium are also under export restrictions, according to the state-run Global Times.
Yttrium, in particular, is key for jet engine coatings, high-frequency radar, and lasers. It helps create thermal barriers on turbine blades, preventing engines from overheating during flight.
Although these measures are not a full ban, they limit export licenses, potentially creating shortages for US manufacturers who rely heavily on Chinese suppliers.
Industry insiders told Reuters that some US aerospace manufacturers are entirely dependent on Chinese sources for rare earths used in avionics. With China able to tighten supply at will, companies may struggle to find alternatives quickly.

Trump tariff: Markets marginally rebound amid US-China trade tensions

Elon Musk took aim at senior <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-orders-removal-of-witness-tree-200-year-old-magnolia-planted-by-andrew-jackson-cut-down-at-white-house-8937967" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">White House</a> trade adviser <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/elon-sells-cars-hes-protecting-his-interests-trump-aide-peter-navarro-responds-to-musks-tariffs-criticism-8935501" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Peter Navarro</a>, calling him &ldquo;truly a moron&rdquo; and &ldquo;dumber than a sack of bricks&rdquo; after Navarro criticised Tesla&rsquo;s operations amid a growing row over US trade policy.
<h2>Musk fires back at tariff claims</h2>
The dispute began when Navarro suggested on CNBC&rsquo;s Squawk Box that Tesla is &ldquo;not a car manufacturer&rdquo; but rather &ldquo;a car assembler,&rdquo; pointing to the company&rsquo;s reliance on imported parts.
Musk hit back swiftly on the social media platform X, stating, &ldquo;Tesla has the most American-made cars. Navarro is truly a moron. What he says here is demonstrably false.&rdquo;

He followed up with another jab, &ldquo;Navarro is dumber than a sack of bricks.&rdquo;
<h2>&ldquo;Most vertically integrated&rdquo; in the US</h2>
Musk also fended Tesla&rsquo;s position in the US automotive industry, writing, &ldquo;By any definition whatsoever, Tesla is the most vertically integrated auto manufacturer in America with the highest percentage of US content.&rdquo;
He even poked fun at Navarro&rsquo;s past controversies, saying, &ldquo;Navarro should ask the fake expert he invented, Ron Vara.&rdquo;
This very public exchange has highlighted internal tensions within the Trump administration, especially between Musk&rsquo;s push for free trade and the protectionist stance favoured by Navarro and others.
Over the weekend, Musk also questioned Navarro&rsquo;s credentials, joking that his Harvard degree was &ldquo;a bad thing, not a good thing.&rdquo; Navarro fired back, accusing Musk of acting in his own self-interest.
<h2>White House response: &ldquo;Whatever&rdquo;</h2>
Trying to downplay the spat, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNBC: &ldquo;We are the most transparent administration in history expressing our disagreements in public,&rdquo; and brushed off the row as &ldquo;whatever.&rdquo;

Although Trump made the final decision on the latest round of tariffs, Navarro was reportedly a key figure behind the plan, which is likely to hit companies like Tesla that rely on overseas supply chains.
Musk, who has voiced support for Trump in the past, has grown increasingly vocal about his opposition to blanket tariffs.

He’s protecting his interests': Trump aide Peter Navarro responds to Musk's tariffs criticism He followed up with another jab, “Navarro is dumber than a sack of bricks.” “Most vertically integrated” in the US Musk also fended Tesla’s position in the US automotive industry, writing, “By any definition whatsoever, Tesla is the most vertically integrated auto manufacturer in America with the highest percentage of US content.” He even poked fun at Navarro’s past controversies, saying, “Navarro should ask the fake expert he invented, Ron Vara.” This very public exchange has highlighted internal tensions within the Trump administration, especially between Musk’s push for free trade and the protectionist stance favoured by Navarro and others. Over the weekend, Musk also questioned Navarro’s credentials, joking that his Harvard degree was “a bad thing, not a good thing.” Navarro fired back, accusing Musk of acting in his own self-interest. White House response: “Whatever” Trying to downplay the spat, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNBC: “We are the most transparent administration in history expressing our disagreements in public,” and brushed off the row as “whatever.” Also read: 'Free trade zone': Elon Musk wants 'zero tariff situation' between US, EU after Tesla loses BILLIONS amid Trump's tariff war Although Trump made the final decision on the latest round of tariffs, Navarro was reportedly a key figure behind the plan, which is likely to hit companies like Tesla that rely on overseas supply chains. Musk, who has voiced support for Trump in the past, has grown increasingly vocal about his opposition to blanket tariffs. (With inputs from agencies)

'Truly a moron': Musk calls Trump trade adviser Navarro ‘dumber than a sack of bricks’ in clash over tariff

The tariff announcement by US President Donald Trump on April 2nd has fueled intense discussions in capitals around the world on the best way to respond. According to White House officials, more than 50 countries have directly contacted them to initiate trade talks. First in line was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who visited Trump at the White House on Monday and said that he will eliminate its trade deficit "very quickly" and wants his country to serve as a model for how to negotiate with the US on trade.

Trump tariff: Global economic downturn looms as trade war escalates

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Apr 8) talked to South Korea's acting President Han Duck-soo over the phone. This comes a day before Trump&rsquo;s 25 per cent tariffs are set to take effect.
&ldquo;I just had a great call with the Acting President of South Korea,&rdquo; the US president posted on his Truth Social platform.&nbsp;
The phone call marks the first time Trump spoke with any of South Korea's acting leaders since he took office in January. Although the US president had a phone call with now-impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol the day after his victory in the November elections last year, the South Korean leader was suspended from duties.

China is planning to ban Hollywood movies after vowing to &ldquo;fight to the end&rdquo; against the sweeping tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. This comes after the US president singled out the nation for additional 50 per cent levies in his recent threats.
Beijing will impose more tariffs on US agricultural products entering China and ban US movies in the country, a Chinese journalist linked to the Communist Party told BBC&rsquo;s Radio 4 programme.

Last year, US films grossed $585 million in China, which is around 3.5 per cent of China's $17.71 billion box office, reported Daily Mail.
A ban on upcoming Hollywood releases, including Jurassic World: Rebirth, The Accountant 2 and the Mission Impossible sequel, could result in a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in the Chinese market.

On Monday (Apr 7), Trump threatened to impose an additional 50 per cent tariff on China if Beijing does not back down from its recently introduced retaliatory tariffs of 34 per cent by Tuesday (Apr 8).&nbsp;
If the US president moves forward with his plans to impose the additional tariffs, unless China withdraws its retaliatory levies on the US, the total new duties on Chinese goods this year could rise to 104 per cent.

In a statement, the Chinese commerce ministry said that the US threats were &ldquo;a mistake on top of a mistake, once again exposing the American side's blackmailing nature,&rdquo; urging the US to resolve the differences through dialogue with mutual respect.

He is sending a top team to negotiate! They have treated the U.S. very poorly on Trade. They don&rsquo;t take our cars, but we take MILLIONS of theirs. Likewise Agriculture, and many other &lsquo;things.&rsquo; It all has to change, but especially with CHINA!!!&rdquo;

World: US President Trump continued to target China on Monday, calling it “the biggest abuser of them all,” adding in a separate post, "It all has to change."

Multiple media reports on Monday (April 07) claimed that US President Donald Trump was considering a 90-day pause on tariffs for all countries except China, but the White House quickly labelled the story “false”. The news, initially reported by Bloomberg, appeared to contradict comments made by top White House trade adviser Peter Navarro earlier the same day. Wrong. Fake News. https://t.co/XOLyli5AOS — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) April 7, 2025 A user on X posted, “Trump is now considering a 90-day pause in tariffs for all countries except China, according to Bloomberg. What a sh-tshow! Peter Navarro was literally on multiple shows this morning saying the opposite. Looks like Trump may have realised that this mess is terrible for the economy. The uncertainty will still hurt us all though.” Also read: ‘We support your agenda’: Bangladesh’s Yunus pleads with Trump to pause tariffs for 3 months. What is India doing? In a follow-up post, the same user added, “Now reports indicate that this may not be true, and there may not be a 90-day pause. The market is now back down, and more chaos continues. What an utter mess. ‘Led by a clownshow’: Report claims Trump weighing 90-day tariff pause for all but China; White House calls it ‘false’

Bangladesh&rsquo;s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus has written to US President Donald Trump for a three-month pause on recently imposed tariffs. Trump's tariffs on the world's second-biggest garment manufacturer have hit hard.
According to a government statement released on Monday, Yunus wrote directly to Trump, assuring him that Bangladesh &ldquo;will take all necessary actions to fully support your trade agenda.&rdquo; The pause, he said, would give Dhaka the chance to &ldquo;substantially increase&rdquo; US exports to Bangladesh.

&ldquo;We are the first country to take such a pro-active initiative,&rdquo; Yunus said in the letter, referencing the February visit of High Representative Dr Khalilur Rahman to Washington DC.
He also noted that Bangladesh was the first nation to sign a long-term deal to import liquefied natural gas from the United States.
The interim leader said steps were already being taken to make trade easier, including removing some testing requirements, easing packaging, labelling and certification rules, and simplifying customs processes and standards.

A follow-up letter outlining these specific actions will be sent to the US Trade Representative by Bangladesh&rsquo;s Commerce Adviser in the coming days, the statement said.
Bangladesh currently has the lowest tariffs on most US exports in South Asia.

Meanwhile, India has taken a different route in responding to Trump&rsquo;s tariffs. Despite facing a 26 per cent tariff on its exports to the US, New Delhi does not plan to retaliate, according to a senior government official who spoke to Reuters.
The official said India is examining a clause in Trump&rsquo;s order that allows for possible exemptions if a country takes &ldquo;significant steps to remedy non-reciprocal trade arrangements.&rdquo;

India, already in talks with Washington over a broader trade deal, hopes its early engagement will give it a favourable position.
