Mayanja warned the death toll was “likely to increase”. The deadly landslides happened near the slopes of Mount Hanang, reported Reuters citing&nbsp;local media, adding that the waters also swept away livestock.&nbsp;

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is in Dubai to attend the COP28 climate summit, expressed her condolences.

She also ordered the deployment of national security forces to help rescue efforts. “We are very shocked by this event,” said Hassan&nbsp;in a video message posted online by the Tanzanian Ministry of Health.

The adverse weather has also damaged infrastructure, reported BBC. The country’s meteorology agency has warned that the rains will continue this month after weeks of downpours across the country in November.

Following his visit to Zanzibar, Jaishankar will travel to Dar-es-Salaam, the capital city of Tanzania, from July 7 to 8.&nbsp;

During his time there, he will co-chair the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart and engage in discussions with top leadership, including several Cabinet rank Ministers. He will also meet with the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for India and inaugurate an India-Tanzania business meeting.

Indian foreign minister Jaishankar witnesses signing of pact for IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar

World Health Organization released a statement on Friday informing that Tanzania has declared an end of the deadly outbreak of the Marburg virus, the cases o which were first reported in the month of March this year.

A total of nine cases, out of which eight were confirmed and one was probable, were recorded in the outbreak of haemorrhagic fever between 16 March to 30 April 2023, as per WHO. Among the confirmed cases, three had recovered. The virus had claimed the lives of six in the East African country.

The cases were reported from the Bukoba district, Kagera region.&nbsp;

Tanzania declared the end of the deadly virus outbreak after the last confirmed case of Marburg in the country tested negative on April 19, setting off the mandatory 42-day countdown to make the announcement, said WHO. &nbsp;

This was the first such outbreak in the country with a population of almost 62 million.

The Marburg virus is an extremely dangerous microbe that causes severe fever, which is often accompanied by organ failure and bleeding. This microbe is a part of the filoviridae family which also includes Ebola.&nbsp;

<h2>Marburg virus origin and earlier outbreaks</h2>

The uncommon virus was first discovered in 1967 after it simultaneously caused disease outbreaks in laboratories in Marburg, Germany, and Belgrade, Serbia. Seven people had died while conducting research on monkeys. Previous Marburg virus outbreaks and isolated cases have been reported in different countries of Africa, including Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda.

Two Marburg deaths were reported in Ghana in July 2022, along with the first cases in West Africa. In September, the outbreak was deemed to be over by the authorities. There have been past outbreaks and isolated cases in other countries of Africa as well, including Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda.

<h2>Human-to-human transmission of the Marburg virus</h2>

Human-to-human transmission of the Marburg virus is possible through contact with blood or other bodily fluids. The contagion can spread in animals when they come in close proximity. The African fruit bat is considered the natural host of the Marburg virus disease, which carries it but doesn’t fall sick from it. The reason why the government of Equatorial Guinea has implemented lockdown and quarantine measures in the affected areas.

<h2>Treatment and cure of Ebola-like sickness</h2>

So far, no vaccines or anti-viral treatments have been approved to treat the Marburg virus infections. However, the World Health Organization says that rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids results in increased chances of survival of an infected individual.

In the small village of Ololosokwan, adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage site and Tanzania’s famous Serengeti National Park live the centuries-old Maasai people of East Africa who have for over a decade now been pushed out of their land for a “game reserve,” while the government says it is to help protect the environment.&nbsp;

<h2>Who are the Maasai people?</h2>

The pastoralist Maasai is said to be among one of the most vibrant indigenous societies on the continent who have lived and managed alongside other native communities for more than two centuries now in the Great Rift Valley located in Southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. The herders are known for their beaded jewellery and plaid shawls draped over their shoulders and wrapped around their waists.&nbsp;

They live in the Ngorongoro district after British colonial authorities in 1951 declared the Serengeti area a national park and relocated the communities within its borders. Since then, living in small clusters of bomas (traditional Maasai houses), the nearly 7,000 semi-nomadic pastoralist ethnic group of people are being forced to relive the woeful echoes of their colonial past.&nbsp;

<h2>Previous attempts at ‘forced’ evictions</h2>

The Tanzanian government plans to displace about 150,000 pastoralists for its conservation initiatives in two areas in the Ngorongoro district &nbsp;– Loliondo Game Controlled Area and Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), reported Human Rights Watch (HRW). However, it was not even close to the first time that it has moved to do so.&nbsp;

According to Joseph Oleshangay, a lawyer with the Tanzania-based Legal and Human Rights Centre,&nbsp;the government has made multiple attempts to push the Maasai people out of their lands since 2003. In 2017, government security forces allegedly burned 185 Maasai houses, a move which has been dubbed as a forced act of eviction by rights groups.&nbsp;

At the time, the government had claimed that the houses in question had been built inside the park, a claim which was also upheld in an East African court. Another incident of violence took place last year when the people from the Maasai community in Loliondo protested against the police&nbsp;demarcating 1,500 square kilometres for the “game reserve”.&nbsp;

A report by The Guardian, citing eyewitnesses, said that the police opened fire, stole cattle, and destroyed property.&nbsp;

As per the HRW, security forces arbitrarily arrested and detained 10 community leaders and even fired teargas and rubber bullets. This clash also led to the death of one police officer and left over 30 Maasai, women, children, and older people&nbsp;injured, while thousands fled to Kenya.&nbsp;

Speaking about the incident to Bloomberg, a man who was only referred to as ‘K’, recalled that some 200 police, military and park rangers faced off against around 500 locals at the village office. According to K, while officials were trying to push past the crowd, shots were fired. Meanwhile, the local men pulled out their wooden bows from their backs and unleashed a number&nbsp;of arrows which hit an officer in the eye, who later died.&nbsp;

K said the officials had responded by firing into the crowd when he suddenly fell and was wounded by a gunshot before he passed out into the nearby forest. He has since fled Ololosokwan and had been living across the border in Kenya.

<h2>So-called quieter approach&nbsp;</h2>

This also came after the government opted for a quieter approach to the relocation, as per rights groups. In 2021, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, which manages the land, issued a 30-day eviction notice to 45 people in the area, which was in addition to 166 others who were identified as illegal “immigrants”.&nbsp;

The agency also ordered the destruction of over 100 homes, churches, schools, medical dispensaries, police stations, and administrative offices within the 30-day period claiming that they had been built without permits, reported The Guardian. The orders were suspended following protests from locals who say that the structures had been there for decades now.&nbsp;

A report by HRW,&nbsp;citing residents, said that since February 2022, the government had begun downsizing essential services in the area. This included health, education, and emergency services after the officials had grounded Flying Medical Services, while the area’s main hospital was downsized to a dispensary from a staff of 64 to two.&nbsp; 
 
The Ngorongoro district authorities, in March 2022, sent two notices seen by The Guardian to six public schools ordering them to transfer some 200 million Tanzanian shillings ($ 84,744) in COVID-19 relief funds to the Handeni resettlement site.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, the local media reported that some 500 residents and 2,000 livestock have been moved to Msomera village in Handeni district, which is hundreds of kilometres away, since the beginning of the relocation back on June 16, 2022. Rights groups have alleged that this downsizing directly hinders the community’s ability to live there.&nbsp;

This was after the land demarcation exercise which&nbsp;restricted people’s access to water sources, and grazing sites, and even cut through some of the houses, reported HRW. “The government is trying to suffocate the communities and make the situation uncomfortable for them,” said human rights lawyer, Denis Moses Oleshangai, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, William Ole Seki, a Maasai elder spoke to the United Kingdom-based newspaper and spoke about how the government has banned imports of building materials into the area, the region’s only hospital was under threat of closure, and two villages to the north which had no water for weeks.&nbsp;

Experts from the United Nations have called on the Tanzania government to halt forced evictions and relocation and urged them to work towards conservation with the local community. It is not just the locals, as officials from the European Union, UN, and international non-governmental organisations have also accused the government of pushing the Maasai off their lands.&nbsp;

<h2>What is all of this for?</h2>

Last year, Tanzania’s tourism ministry decided to convert 1,500 square kilometres around Ololosokwan from a “game-controlled area,” where residents are permitted to live, farm and graze livestock, to a “game reserve,” reported Bloomberg. The so-called game reserve would be turned into a wildlife habitat as well as used for safari tourism and people with the right licence can also hunt.

The price of the game reserve is being paid by the Maasai who as per the locals, UN Human Rights Council and the European Parliament,&nbsp;have been subjected to arbitrary arrests, torture and beatings, in addition to the aforementioned hindrances to their livelihoods. Notably, the plans for the so-called game reserve have been in the works for three decades now.&nbsp;

According to the UN, 82,000 Maasai risk being pushed out of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Loliondo reported Bloomberg. However, Tanzania’s Natural Resources and tourism ministry has asserted that Ololosokwan “has no settlements.”&nbsp;

Addressing the conservation efforts the government has alleged that the Maasai and their herds are expanding and now represent a threat to conservation in Ngorongoro and the wider Serengeti ecosystem.&nbsp;

The national park is home to several endangered species including the black rhinoceros, elephant, wild dog and cheetah. However, the Maasai assert that they live harmoniously with wildlife, which scientists have agreed with as nearly 300 researchers from around the world signed an open letter and called for a halt to eviction efforts.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, rights groups have said Tanzania is pushing Maasai out of the region in a bid to expand its lucrative tourism sector supposedly under the guise of conservation efforts. “It’s all about money. Dirty money,” Ole Seki told The Guardian.&nbsp;

In 2019, the tourism sector brought in $6.6 billion and made up 11 per cent of the country’s GDP. According to an analysis by HRW, satellite images of the region show in July 2022 about 90 homesteads and animal enclosures were burned within the demarcated area.&nbsp;

<h2>The UAE connection</h2>

A report by Bloomberg alleges that in 1992, the Ngorongoro district council granted a 10-year hunting permit to a man named Mohammed Abdulrahim Al Ali for areas including Ololosokwan and five other villages. He is currently said to be the chairman and owner of the Al Ali Group, a major property developer in the United Arab Emirates.

Citing the findings of a Tanzanian investigative reporter who has since been arrested, the media report says that millions of dollars in donations were also made from Dubai’s royal family to Tanzania’s ruling party. However, the UAE government has since denied these allegations and said it was “committed to preserving the rights of indigenous peoples”.&nbsp;

Maasai delegation to meet European leaders&nbsp;

Earlier this week, Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) said that a high-profile delegation of Maasai representatives will meet European governments, EU institutions and NGOs like Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), in May, for what they have described as the government’s “brutal campaign against Maasai in Tanzania.”&nbsp;

Explained | How Tanzania’s Maasai are being 'forcefully relocated' for a 'game reserve'

A convicted rapist and murderer, Thabo Bester, who had escaped from a prison in South Africa&nbsp;by faking his&nbsp;death, was arrested in Tanzania, said the government&nbsp;in a statement&nbsp;on Saturday (April 8). Bester, who is also known as the “Facebook rapist” for using the social media platform to lure his victims, escaped from a privately-run prison in Bloemfontein.&nbsp;

Bester’s arrest in Tanzania

Notably, while the "Facebook rapist"&nbsp;had escaped from prison last year, South African police found it out only last month. The arrest took place late Friday when Bester and two of his suspected accomplices were apprehended in the city of Arusha in Tanzania.&nbsp;

One of the two alleged accomplices is said to be his girlfriend, who along with the third suspect will be extradited to South Africa. The arrest was confirmed in a statement by the South African police who said that Bester along with his “accomplice Dr Nandipha Maguduma along with a Mozambican national have been arrested in Tanzania late last night (Friday).”&nbsp;

The police also believe that the trio was “heading for the border of another country,” said South Africa's Police Minister Bheki Cele, on Saturday. He added that they had arrived in Arusha from Dar es Salaam. Reportedly, they also had several passports with fake aliases.&nbsp;

Furthermore, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said that a South African delegation will travel to Tanzania to bring the fugitives back. “We are confident that we will receive maximum cooperation from our sister nation, Tanzania, to assist us to bring these fugitives to justice,” said the justice minister.&nbsp;

How Bester faked his own death

Bester, who was reportedly at large for at least a year, was thought to be dead after setting himself on fire in his prison cell at the maximum security facility, Bloemfontein, operated by multinational company G4S. The British-owned security company has since dismissed three prison employees in connection with the incident who&nbsp;have also been accused of helping him flee.

However, it was not until months of reporting by the South African non-profit news agency GroundUp suggested that he was alive. Last month, the prison admitted that the body found burned in the cell was not Bester’s.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, ordered that the investigation into the Mangaung prison escape be prioritised, said the police statement.&nbsp;

Additionally, a murder case was also registered and is currently being investigated after DNA analysis that confirmed that the body of the deceased which was found, was not&nbsp;Bester's. The body's identity is still unknown.&nbsp;

“The autopsy report went on to further reveal that the deceased had died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, and was already dead, prior to the arson incident,” said the police statement.&nbsp;

The case of the ‘Facebook rapist’

Dubbed the “Facebook rapist”, Bester was convicted in 2012 for the rape and murder of his model girlfriend Nomfundo Tyhulu and a year after he was found guilty of raping and robbing two other women. Prior to his escape, Bester also reportedly ran a scam media business from prison using a false name.

Lake Natron is an alkaline lake located in the north Ngorongoro District of the Arusha Region in Tanzania. The details about this surreal lake can be extremely scary. Over a period of time, this lake has become a centre of attraction for experts and analysts. The crimson water looks beautiful but not enticing enough to force people to dive and take a dip in it. But why?&nbsp;

It has been reported that the lake turns animals that touch it into "stone". This sounds like folklore or a horror movie script, but it can be true to some extent because of the presence of salt in it.&nbsp;

The lake contains salt, soda, and magnesite deposits. Ol Doinyo Lengai, also known as the Mountain of God, contributes to the lake's hostile conditions. It is the only active volcano to emit natrocarbonatites -&nbsp;a rare carbonatite lava.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sodium carbonate and other minerals that enter the lake from the surrounding hills make the water alkaline. For the unversed, the deposits of sodium carbonate were apparently once used in the process of Egyptian mummification also.&nbsp;

In this Eastern African lake, the same process acts as a type of preservative for those animals who lost their lives in its waters.

Several media reports say so, but it is difficult to establish that the lake water was responsible for turning animals to stone when they died after coming into contact with the lake. But there's no proof. In fact, the same water also supports a thriving ecosystem of salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, flamingos, etc.&nbsp;

The lake, deemed one of the world's deadliest, must be terrifying for most animals, but not for flamingoes. This lake is a thriving place and the only regular breeding area in East Africa for the 2.5 million lesser flamingoes.&nbsp;

The salty water in Lake Natron has a pH of over 10.5 and reports said that the water is so caustic that it can burn the skin and eyes of animals that aren't adapted to it. The lake&nbsp;gets&nbsp;its blood-red tone from&nbsp;Bacteria, which can tolerate harsh conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nick Brandt, an English photographer, whose work mostly focused on the rapidly disappearing natural world because of environmental destruction, and climate change, published a book in 2013 titled - "Across the Ravaged Land".&nbsp;

The book is the third and final volume in Brandt's trilogy of books documenting the disappearing animals of eastern Africa. He published a series of images which showed haunting images of the lake and reportedly its dead.&nbsp;

As quoted by&nbsp;NBC News, Brandt said: "I unexpectedly found the creatures — all manner of birds and bats — washed up along the shoreline of Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania. I took these creatures as I found them on the shoreline, and then placed them in 'living' positions, bringing them back to 'life'."&nbsp;

Lake Natron is an alkaline lake located in the north Ngorongoro District of the Arusha Region in Tanzania. The details about this surreal lake can be extremely scary. Over a period of time, this lake has become a centre of attraction for experts and analysts. The crimson water looks beautiful but not enticing enough to force people to dive and take a dip in it. But why? It has been reported that the lake turns animals that touch it into "stone". This sounds like folklore or a horror movie script, but it can be true to some extent because of the presence of salt in it. The lake contains salt, soda, and magnesite deposits. Ol Doinyo Lengai, also known as the Mountain of God, contributes to the lake's hostile conditions. It is the only active volcano to emit natrocarbonatites - a rare carbonatite lava. Sodium carbonate and other minerals that enter the lake from the surrounding hills make the water alkaline. For the unversed, the deposits of sodium carbonate were apparently once used in the process of Egyptian mummification also. In this Eastern African lake, the same process acts as a type of preservative for those animals who lost their lives in its waters. Several media reports say so, but it is difficult to establish that the lake water was responsible for turning animals to stone when they died after coming into contact with the lake. But there's no proof. In fact, the same water also supports a thriving ecosystem of salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, flamingos, etc. The lake, deemed one of the world's deadliest, must be terrifying for most animals, but not for flamingoes. This lake is a thriving place and the only regular breeding area in East Africa for the 2.5 million lesser flamingoes. The salty water in Lake Natron has a pH of over 10.5 and reports said that the water is so caustic that it can burn the skin and eyes of animals that aren't adapted to it. The lake gets its blood-red tone from Bacteria, which can tolerate harsh conditions. Nick Brandt, an English photographer, whose work mostly focused on the rapidly disappearing natural world because of environmental destruction, and climate change, published a book in 2013 titled - "Across the Ravaged Land". The book is the third and final volume in Brandt's trilogy of books documenting the disappearing animals of eastern Africa. He published a series of images which showed haunting images of the lake and reportedly its dead. As quoted by NBC News, Brandt said: "I unexpectedly found the creatures — all manner of birds and bats — washed up along the shoreline of Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania. As tour and safari operators posted online Bob Junior's remembrances, the Bob Junior's spotters of the past recollected when they witnessed the junior Bob in all his Savannah glory. A number of tributes poured in.&nbsp;

This, in turn, will lead to increased trade volumes and greater economic cooperation between India and Tanzania.&nbsp;

Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania, Binaya Pradhan, has expressed optimism that the business community will benefit from the move. In a tweet he said, "Good news for India-Tanzania Trade; Rupee &amp; Tanzanian Shiling (Tsh) can now be used for settlement of bilateral trade, Reserve Bank of India has allowed such mechanism; business community from both sides should make best use of it"&nbsp;

This arrangement is now applicable to 18 countries which are, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Fiji, Germany, Guyana, Israel, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Russia, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. &nbsp;

Indian importers will make payment in INR, which shall be credited into the Special Vostro account of the correspondent bank of the partner country, against the invoices for the supply of goods/services from the overseas seller/supplier. Indian exporters can be paid their export proceeds in INR from the balances in the designated Special Vostro account of the correspondent bank of the partner country.&nbsp;

The Indian high commission in Tanzania is organising a Stakeholders Consultation Meeting on 24th March 2023 where details about the bilateral trade mechanism using local currency and its benefits would be discussed. This move towards using national currencies for bilateral trade settlement is in line with the RBI’s objective of promoting the use of domestic currencies in cross-border transactions, which is expected to reduce the dependence on foreign currencies, especially the US dollar.&nbsp;

In a rather unfortunate event, a passenger aeroplane crashed into Lake Victoria in Tanzania while attempting to land at the nearby airport in Bukoba on Sunday, as per a report by Reuters.

The rescue operation is currently underway and according to authorities, 15 people have been rescued from the water so far.&nbsp;

Flight number PW 494&nbsp;had taken off from the capital, Dar es Salaam before plunging into Lake Victoria (Africa's largest lake), primarily due to bad weather as storm and heavy rains lashed the region.&nbsp;

The plane belonged to a Tanzanian airline company named&nbsp;PrecisionAir which operates&nbsp;passenger services to&nbsp;Nairobi, Entebbe and different airstrips spread across the country.&nbsp;

The company, in an official statement, after the crash said, "PrecisionAir flight no. PW 494, flying from Dar es Salaam to Bukoba, was involved in an accident as it was approaching Bukoba Airport.”

“The rescue team has been dispatched to the scene and more information will be released in two hours,” the statement added.&nbsp;

Monkeys kill month-old baby after snatching boy from breastfeeding mother in Tanzania

Shortly before midnight on a spring night last year, Samia Suluhu Hassan, then Tanzania’s first female vice president, appeared on television to announce to a shocked nation that the president was dead.

President John Magufuli, an autocrat known as “The Bulldozer,” had denied that coronavirus existed in his country, rejected COVID vaccines and died after a weekslong absence from public view amid unconfirmed reports that he had contracted the virus.

His death catapulted Hassan, 62, to a historic position as Tanzania’s first female president. Known as “Mama Samia,” she is currently the only female head of government in Africa. On Friday, she met in Washington with a fellow path-breaker, Kamala Harris, the first woman and first woman of color to be vice president of the United States.

Since taking office, Hassan has set off on a different path than her predecessor: She encouraged COVID vaccinations by publicly taking the shot herself, lifted a ban on pregnant girls in schools and began to amend some Magufuli-era economic regulations to lure back investors.

But her first challenge, Hassan said in an interview last week at the state house in the capital, Dodoma, was to overcome the notion that a woman could not lead Tanzania.

“Most of the people couldn’t believe that we can have a woman president and she can deliver,” Hassan said. “The challenge was to create a trust to the people that yes, I can do it.”

She said that other African female leaders — including Liberia’s first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and Sahle-Work Zewde, the president (though not head of government) of Ethiopia — quickly came to her support, urging her in a virtual meeting to remain confident, seek counsel and listen to her inner voice.

“They all gave me courage that you can do it,” said Hassan, who was fasting for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Since ascending to power in March last year, Hassan has positioned herself as a unifying national figure willing to challenge the establishment and bent on bringing her country in from the cold after five years of isolationism under Magufuli, who rarely traveled abroad.

Tanzania, a nation of 60 million people that borders eight other countries in eastern, central and southern Africa, was long seen as a bulwark of stability in a region torn by ethnic strife and civil war.

But Hassan, who is expected to run for president in 2025, takes the helm of a polarized nation with a battered economy and growing unemployment, a slow pace of vaccine deployment and a growing clamor for constitutional overhauls.

In addition to meeting U.S. officials during her trip to the United States, she is also set to court investors, seek assistance in improving public health partnerships and promote Tanzania as a vibrant tourist destination.

In Washington, one issue Hassan is likely to face is the war in Ukraine. Tanzania was among the African nations that abstained from the United Nations vote condemning the war — a move Hassan said was in line with Tanzania’s long-standing position of nonalignment.

Pushed on this, she said that in “Tanzania, we don’t know why they are fighting,” adding that Russia and Ukraine should sit down to talk. “The world has to convince Putin not to fight,” she said.

Hassan was born in the Zanzibar archipelago off the coast of mainland Tanzania to a stay-at-home mother and schoolteacher father. After high school, she completed bachelor’s and postgraduate degrees in economics and public administration in schools in Tanzania and Britain. She later worked with the World Food Program and held positions in various nongovernmental organizations in Zanzibar.

But at the turn of the century, she decided to try her hand in government.

A member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party — or Party of the Revolution — since the late 1980s, she was elected as a lawmaker in Zanzibar in 2000 before joining the national Parliament in 2010. Hassan, who sits in the party’s central committee, quickly went up the ranks, becoming a minister in the vice president’s office and then rising to the vice presidency in 2015. Hassan is married to Hafidh Ameir Hafidh, a former agriculture lecturer, with whom she has three sons and one daughter.

Hassan, who is soft-spoken and comes across as reserved, said that as vice president, it was “tough” working with Magufuli at times, and that she argued with him on several issues, including his COVID denialism. She rebutted the idea that he had succumbed to COVID and said he had died of heart complications.

As president, she said, her main priority was to revive the economy, build thousands of schools and health clinics, extend clean water and electricity to rural areas and complete key infrastructure projects — including a railway line and a major hydropower plant. She said more than 250 new businesses had already been registered in the country last year.

Yet concerns have persisted about the pace of change under her government.

Over the past year, activists were abducted, two newspapers were temporarily suspended by the government and the main opposition leader, Freeman Mbowe, was jailed for several months on terrorism-related charges before his release. Political rallies outside elections have been banned in the country since 2016, when the government accused the opposition of wanting to use them to cause mass civil disobedience. Activists also questioned whether Hassan was committed to reviewing the constitution, which grants vast powers to the executive and was adopted in 1977, when the country was still a one-party state.

Hassan said she wanted to focus on fixing the economy before turning to the “huge” and “costly” endeavor of changing the constitution. She said she created a task force from within the political parties council to make recommendations on changes, including lifting the ban on political rallies. She added that she was intent on leveling the playing field, even if it cost her the presidency in the next elections.

She has also struck a conciliatory note with the political opposition and civil society.

On a recent morning, she arrived at a packed hall in the capital to preside over a conference discussing how to improve the democratic space in the country. Sitting by her side onstage was one of the leaders of the country’s main opposition parties, who under her predecessor had been arrested and found guilty of sedition, and whose fellow party members were beaten, tear-gassed and denied the chance to hold rallies.

“Things have changed,” Zitto Kabwe, the opposition leader, said in an interview the next day. “We started to breathe some fresh air from the day the new president took office.”

But while he would like to see the political changes put in place quickly, Kabwe said he also understood Hassan’s predilection for incremental change.

“She’s a leader who wants consensus, and consensus takes time,” he said.

Last year, Hassan’s government lifted bans on four newspapers, but she has yet to change some of the restrictive laws that have been used to undermine media freedom.

Simon Mkina, the publisher and editor-in-chief of Mawio, a weekly investigative newspaper that she reinstated, said she should overhaul media laws so future leaders do not abuse them.

“She must take action,” he said.

With three more years before the next election, Hassan has her work cut out for her.

Fatma Karume, a prominent Tanzanian lawyer who was disbarred and had her office bombed for challenging Magufuli’s government, said Hassan has the chance to restore Tanzanians’ faith in democracy and transform the country.

“She could leave behind a legacy that few other presidents have managed,” Karume said in an interview at her home in the port city of Dar es Salaam. “And imagine doing that as a result of a historical accident. It will be amazing.”

Pushed on this, she said that in “Tanzania, we don’t know why they are fighting,” adding that Russia and Ukraine should sit down to talk. “The world has to convince Putin not to fight,” she said. Hassan was born in the Zanzibar archipelago off the coast of mainland Tanzania to a stay-at-home mother and schoolteacher father. After high school, she completed bachelor’s and postgraduate degrees in economics and public administration in schools in Tanzania and Britain. Hassan, who is soft-spoken and comes across as reserved, said that as vice president, it was “tough” working with Magufuli at times, and that she argued with him on several issues, including his COVID denialism. She rebutted the idea that he had succumbed to COVID and said he had died of heart complications. As president, she said, her main priority was to revive the economy, build thousands of schools and health clinics, extend clean water and electricity to rural areas and complete key infrastructure projects — including a railway line and a major hydropower plant. She said more than 250 new businesses had already been registered in the country last year. Yet concerns have persisted about the pace of change under her government. Over the past year, activists were abducted, two newspapers were temporarily suspended by the government and the main opposition leader, Freeman Mbowe, was jailed for several months on terrorism-related charges before his release. Hassan had increasingly come under pressure to dismiss the case, which raised concerns at home and abroad about the state of political and media freedoms in the country.&nbsp;

She "emphasised the need to collaborate to build the nation, through trust and mutual respect," the presidential office said in a statement late Friday after the two met.&nbsp;

"We had consensus that this country is for us all," Hassan said, referring to Mbowe as "our relative."&nbsp;

Mbowe thanked the president for "her concern," adding: "We have agreed to build trust between us and ensure democracy so as to move ahead with proper politics and help the government to do its duties nicely."

Conciliatory overtures&nbsp;

Since Hassan took power in March last year following the sudden death of her predecessor John Magufuli, who was nicknamed "Bulldozer" for his uncompromising leadership style, she has sought to break with some of his policies.&nbsp;

But the arrest of Mbowe along with a number of other senior party officials just hours before they were to hold a public forum to demand constitutional reforms dimmed hopes she would turn the page on Magufuli's rule. &nbsp;

Recently however, the government has made conciliatory overtures to the opposition.

In February, Hassan met in Brussels with Chadema's deputy chairman Tundu Lissu, who was the party's candidate in the 2020 presidential election but lives in exile in Belgium following an attempt on his life in 2017.

Also last month, the government lifted a Magufuli-era ban on four Swahili-language newspapers, including Daima -- a daily owned by Mbowe.

Ngorongoro in northern&nbsp;Tanzania&nbsp;is a World Heritage Site that is home to&nbsp;wildlife&nbsp;including big cats such as&nbsp;lions, cheetahs and leopards.&nbsp;
