She added that Taiwan hopes "China will take the safety and happiness of the people on both sides into consideration, pursue mutual benefit, coexistence... stop all kinds of political and military intimidations on Taiwan and the region".&nbsp;

Speaking about China's various military actions, Kuo&nbsp;said that "the president and the national security team have a full grasp of the situation" and called for the public to "rest assured".

Taiwan’s defence ministry on Saturday said a total of 111 Chinese aircraft and dozens of naval vessels took part in the two-day drills surrounding the island.&nbsp;

As of Saturday at 6:00 am (local time), around 62 Chinese warplanes and 27 PLAN vessels were detected around the self-governed island, said Taiwan’s defence ministry.&nbsp;

It also reported that 47 Chinese warplanes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered the island’s southwestern, southeastern, and eastern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).&nbsp;

Taiwan Strait’s median line has previously served as an unofficial barrier between the two sides.&nbsp;

“ROC (Republic of China) Armed Forces have monitored the situation and employed CAP aircraft, Navy vessels, and coastal missile systems in response to the detected activities,” said Taiwan’s defence ministry. &nbsp;

Dozens of Chinese aircraft which included advanced Su-30 fighters and nuclear-capable H-6 bombers, flew in the strait as well as down into the Bashi Channel, which separates Taiwan from the Philippines, reported the self-governed island’s defence ministry.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Closer than ever before’</h2>

Chinese military analyst Tong Zhen, an expert from the Academy of Military Sciences, told state news agency Xinhua that the PLA vessels had inched “closer than ever before” to Taiwan’s shores.&nbsp;

The exercises involved simulating strikes targeting the island’s leaders as well as its ports and airports, as per Xinhua.&nbsp;

This would “cut off the island’s ‘blood vessels’ and block out its ‘foreign aid regiments’,” Tong was quoted as saying.&nbsp;

In a statement late Tuesday (Jan 30), the Chinese civil aviation administration said, starting Thursday (Feb 1) it will cancel the “offset measure” for the southbound operation of the M503 flight route. The route in question is just west of the strait’s median line.

China has also said that it is opening routes from west to east – towards Taiwan – on two flight paths from the Chinese cities of Xiamen and Fuzhou which are close to the Taiwanese-controlled island groups of Kinmen and Matsu, and have regular flights to Taiwan.

The median line has served as an unofficial border between Chinese-claimed self-governed Taiwan and mainland China.&nbsp;

However, Beijing has repeatedly denied the existence of the barrier and regularly sends PLA vessels and aircraft, in a bid to pressure Taipei to accept its sovereignty claims, which Taiwan has long rejected.&nbsp;

<h2>Taiwan responds to ‘unilateral’ change</h2>

Taiwan’s civil aviation administration and China-policy making Mainland Affairs Council have labelled the moves as “unilateral” and said they strongly protest it.&nbsp;

The council said China is ignoring flight safety, disrespecting Taiwan and even accused Beijing of trying to make these changes for political or military considerations under the guise of civil aviation to possibly change the status quo in the strait.

It added, “If the mainland side clings obstinately to its course, it must bear any serious consequences affecting cross-strait relations.”&nbsp;

Taiwan’s defence ministry said China’s “rude and unreasonable” actions can easily lead to an increase in tensions.&nbsp;

“Chinese aircraft could now end up flying across the line when they have to adjust flight paths due to weather conditions,” said Colonel Sun Li-fang, Taiwan’s defence ministry spokesperson.

Chieh Chung, a military researcher at Taiwan’s National Policy Foundation told Reuters, that as per China’s new plan, the new route would be around seven kilometres from the median line. Therefore, it would reduce the warning and reaction time for Taiwan’s air defences.&nbsp;

He added, “It is trying to completely eliminate and deny the existence of the median line.” The Air Defence Identification Zone&nbsp;(ADIZ) is a broad area that the Taiwanese forces patrol to give its forces more time to respond to threats.&nbsp;

<h2>China downplays Taiwan’s concerns</h2>

On Wednesday (Jan 31), Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office called the changes “routine” to help alleviate pressure on air space and “ensure aviation safety”.&nbsp;

He also said that China did not need to discuss this first with Taiwan, adding that the “so-called median line does not exist.”&nbsp;

In 2018, Taiwan had complained about the M503 route which is used by Chinese airlines and foreign airlines going to and from cities like Shanghai to Southeast Asia.

Taiwan’s ministry of defence said that it detected seven PLA aircraft and four vessels operating around the island, on Wednesday (Jan 31). The Taiwanese forces “monitored the situation and tasked appropriate forces to respond,” it added.&nbsp;

On Saturday (Jan 27), Taiwan said it detected&nbsp;33 military aircraft, in a 24-hour window out of which 13 crossed the median line, the most Chinese military aircraft near the self-governed island since the election.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Taiwan&nbsp;is on high alert for Chinese activities, both military and political, ahead of the Jan. 13 presidential and parliamentary election. Taipei has warned of Beijing's efforts to interfere in the ballot to get voters to pick candidates China may prefer.

Taiwan's defence ministry said the two balloons were detected at 9:03 a.m. (0103GMT) and 2:43 p.m. (0643GMT) after crossing the strait's median 110 nautical miles (204 km)northwest of the northern&nbsp;Taiwanese port city of Keelung.

The balloons flew at an altitude of about 27,000 feet (3,230 metres), headed east and disappeared at 9:36 am&nbsp;and 4:35 pm&nbsp;respectively, the ministry added.

The ministry's initial judgment is that they were weather balloons, spokesperson Sun Li-fang said.

China's defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Taiwan reported that two Chinese weather balloons were spotted flying across the Taiwan Strait. The Ministry added that balloons stayed north of Taiwan. This is the second time that such an incident has been reported this month.

The defence ministry of Taiwan, while providing details of Chinese missions on Thursday (Dec 7), said that 12 fighter jets of China crossed the median line, which once was seen as an unofficial barrier between the two sides. However, now Chinese planes regularly fly over that zone. 
 
Making an unusual addition to the statement, the ministry added that around midday on Thursday a Chinese balloon was also detected 101 nautical miles (187 km) southwest of the northern Taiwanese city of Keelung, which moved eastward for nearly an hour and crossed the strait before disappearing.

<h2>Weather balloon or spy balloon?</h2>

Speaking to the reporters at the parliament, Taiwan Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said that their "initial understanding" was most likely a weather balloon and the ministry felt that it had an obligation to report this to be public. 
 
"Otherwise, if after other units or other countries have reported it, everyone will wonder why (we) did not report it. The defence ministry requires all our subordinate units to have a grasp of the enemy situation," he said.
