China has launched its first high-speed rail line near the Taiwan Strait. The state broadcaster CCTV reported on Thursday (Sep 28) that the train will run across several bays and will travel along the coast of the southeastern province of Fujian, which is closer to the Taiwan Strait.&nbsp;

Xinhua reported that a bullet train departed from Fuzhou, which is the capital of east China's Fujian province, to open the 277-kilometre Fuzhou-Xiamen-Zhangzhou railway line on Thursday morning.&nbsp;

Citing China State Railway Group Co Ltd, which is the country's railway operator, state media said that it is China's first cross-sea, rapid line with bullet trains that will travel over bridges across three coastal bays.&nbsp;

China aims to enhance its railway infrastructure as Beijing had 42,000 km of operational high-speed railway by 2022 and the length of high-speed rail regularly operating at 350 km per hour neared 3,200 km as of June 2022.&nbsp;

Taiwan scrambles jets as 10 Chinese warplanes cross median line of strait

The White House fears that China's "growing aggressiveness" in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea may soon lead to casualties. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby noted the "unsafe" and "unprofessional" intercepts by China in recent days, and issued the warning.&nbsp;

"It won't be long before somebody gets hurt," the White House spokesperson told reporters. "That's the concern with these unsafe and unprofessional intercepts."

Kirby added that Washington&nbsp;would continue to stand up for the freedom of navigation in the air and sea.

"I sure would like to hear Beijing justify what they're doing," Kirby said. "Air and maritime intercepts happen all the time. Heck, we do it. The difference is...when we feel like we need to do it, it's done professionally."

The US Navy on Sunday released a video titled "Unsafe interaction" in the Taiwan Strait. The video showed a Chinese warship crossing in front of a US destroyer.&nbsp;

The US military alleged that the Chinese Navy knowingly carried out “unsafe manoeuvres” near the destroyer transiting the sensitive Taiwan Strait.&nbsp;

Previously, the two nations locked horns when a Chinese plane “flew directly in front of and within 400 feet of the nose of the RC-135, forcing the US aircraft to fly through its wake turbulence".&nbsp;

In a declassified video footage, a fighter plane could be seen crossing in front of the American aircraft which appears to be shaking due to the resulting turbulence.

Amid China's continued military aggression in the South China Sea, several Western navies conduct "freedom of navigation operations" regularly. The main aim of these drills is to assert the international status of regional waterways such as the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.&nbsp;

The US Navy said in a statement that the USS Milius guided-missile destroyer "conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit April 16 (local time) through waters where high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law".&nbsp;

"The ship transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal State," it added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, China says it has tracked the vessel. Colonel Shi Yi, who is a Chinese military spokesman, said that the troops in the area "remain on a high level of alert at all times and will resolutely defend national sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability".&nbsp;

On the other hand, Taiwan's defence ministry said on Monday that during the vessel's transit, its military had "closely monitored the dynamics in our surrounding sea and airspace, and the situation was normal."&nbsp;

Beijing claims Taiwan as its own territory since the Chinese civil war of the 1940s and also says that the island nation will defy the one-nation policy by pushing for formal independence. Beijing even claimed that, in case needed, it will use force to unite the two territories.&nbsp;

Beijing monitoring US warship which sailed through Taiwan Strait days after China drills

Hours after China announced the launch of military drills spanning three days, Taiwan's defence ministry said that eight Chinese warships and 42 fighter jets were spotted around the island on Saturday.

The ministry expressed "solemn condemnation of such irrational actions", adding the detections — which included 29 jets crossing Taiwan's median line — took place between 6 am and 11 am local time, reports AFP news agency.

Earlier in the day, China announced that it was launching three days of military drills in the Taiwan Strait. According to the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command, "United Sharp Sword" would run from April 8 to 10 for "combat preparedness."&nbsp;In a PLA statement, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for the Eastern Theatre Command, said the exercise would involve police patrol drills in the&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;Strait, "to the north and south of&nbsp;Taiwan, and in the sea and airspace to the east of&nbsp;Taiwan".

The exact location of these drills is not yet known.&nbsp; 
 
China's military is rehearsing an "encirclement" of Taiwan during the drills, state media reported. "The task force will simultaneously organise patrols and advances around Taiwan island, shaping an all-round encirclement and deterrence posture," CCTV said.

China views self-ruled&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;as part of its territory and has vowed to one day seize it, by force if necessary.&nbsp;

The announcement of the military drills comes after Taiwanese President Tsai In-wen met US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California on Wednesday. Hours before the meeting, Beijing&nbsp;sent its Shandong aircraft carrier through&nbsp;Taiwan's southeastern waters on its way to the western Pacific.

Taiwan sent aircraft to warn away the Chinese aircraft, while missile systems monitored them, the ministry said, using standard wording for its response.

Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has complained in recent years of almost daily missions by the Chinese air force near the democratically governed island, often in the south-western part of its air defence identification zone.

Beijing has threatened unspecified retaliation if the Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen, who is now travelling in the Americas, should meet the US House of Representatives' speaker, Kevin McCarthy. She is expected to meet him in Los Angeles on her way back to Taipei this month from Central America.

Taiwan's defence ministry, meanwhile, said the missiles would "effectively defend the airspace to deal with threats and provocations from the Communist military" and would bolster defence stockpiles, the news agency Reuters reported. The ministry added that American defence companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies are the principal contractors. These companies have been sanctioned by China for selling weapons to Taiwan. This major military boost to Taiwan comes as it reported on Thursday a second-day large-scale Chinese air force incursions into its air defence identification zone. The defence ministry said that during the last 24 hours, it spotted 21 aircraft. Beijing opposes the arms sales The Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday that it firmly opposed the new US arms sale package for Taiwan and that Washington should stop sales to, and military contact with, Taipei. "China urges the US side to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués, stop arms sales to Taiwan and stop US-Taiwan military ties, and stop creating factors of tension in the Taiwan Strait," foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said. "China will continue to take resolute and strong measures to firmly defend its sovereignty and security interests," she added. The strategic group of islands in the middle of the western Pacific Ocean includes Guam, where a US military base is located, some 2,700km (1,600 miles) from Taiwan.

Tensions have been rising in Taiwan Strait ever since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi&nbsp;visited the self-ruled island in August last year, triggering strong reactions from China. The PLA, in response, launched live-fire drills around Taiwan.

PLA has been upping its arsenal with the introduction of combat drones. According to media reports, China has TB-001 long-endurance strike and reconnaissance drone, the BZK-005 and BZK-007 long-range reconnaissance drones, the KVD-001 tactical reconnaissance and damage assessment drone, and the WZ-7 reconnaissance drone.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan caused tensions to flare once again in the region with China responding with military drills in the Strait. In the last two months, a number of US delegations have visited Taiwan with Biden supporting their cause on multiple occasions.

The US Navy is currently positioned in the area and in recent years, a number of warships have made the journey through the strait. This was one of the few occasions when a Canadian ship also made the transit as confirmed by Ministry of Defence Head of Media Relations Daniel Le Bouthillier.

Two Chinese fighters cross Taiwan Strait median line again, says Taiwan's defence ministry

With Beijing's modernised navy asserting its strength, the line running down the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and China is looking increasingly meaningless.

The imaginary line was devised by a US general, Benjamin Oliver Davis Junior&nbsp;in 1954 at the height of Cold War hostility between Communist China and US-backed Taiwan. Although China never officially recognised the line but the People's Liberation Army largely respected it.

Taipei is bracing for warships from China's much larger navy which is routinely pushing over the line since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

A Taiwanese official familiar with security planning in the region told news agency Reuters, "They want to increase pressure on us with the end goal of us giving up the median line."

Highlighting that a change in the status quo could not be tolerated, foreign minister Joseph Wu said that Taiwan needs to join hands with ''like-minded partners to make sure that the median line is still there.''

If Chinese forces entered its 12 nautical miles of territorial waters, Taiwan would have to react militarily but it has no immediate plan to give the coastguard more authority to respond.

Reiterating that Taiwan will neither provoke nor escalate a conflict, President Tsai Ing-wen pointed out that Taipei is modernising its army as a precaution.

Since the imaginary line has no legal standing, it is questionable whether international support for Taiwan is sufficient to deter China from patrolling Taiwan's side of one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

The Taiwan Strait is about 180 km (110 miles) wide and the median line is about 40 km (25 miles) from Taiwan's waters at its narrowest.

Taiwanese officials warned that an established Chinese naval presence close to Taipei's territorial waters would stretch its military and make any Chinese blockade or invasion much easier.

Not only a redundant median line helps China to project its power in&nbsp;the Pacific, but it would also usher in further challenges to the long-standing US&nbsp;dominance near Beijing's seas.

Claiming that the median line "did not exist", Chinese ships are attempting to manoeuvre around Taiwanese patrols to cross it.

The "overthrowing" of the median line consensus had increased the risk of accidental conflict, according to experts.

Underscoring what they see as its status as an international waterway, the US ships are&nbsp;expected to sail through the Taiwan Strait within weeks but they are not expected to challenge Chinese vessels on either side of the median line.

The "overthrowing" of the median line consensus had increased the risk of accidental conflict, according to experts. Underscoring what they see as its status as an international waterway, the US ships are expected to sail through the Taiwan Strait within weeks but they are not expected to challenge Chinese vessels on either side of the median line. According to a source, Reuters reported that China have surrounded the dividing line with warships and aircrafts with the forces “touching” the barrier once and circling back on Tuesday.

Taiwan’s defense ministry has not issued any statement regarding the ongoing developments but the source claimed that their air force was put on alert in the aftermath of the incident.

Chinese planes and warships positioned near line dividing Taiwan Strait ahead of Nancy Pelosi visit: Report

China has accused the US of “deliberately endangering peace and stability” in the Taiwanese Strait after a US maritime plane flew through the in high tension region.

In a statement, Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for the Eastern Theatre Command of the People's Liberation Army, said China opposes the actions of the US and added that their troops are on high alert.

He said that the Chinese military has deployed air and ground forces to monitor the US aircraft's operation, reports Reuters.

On Friday, a P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance plane flew over the Taiwan Strait in a demonstration of the United States' “commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific”, just days after dozens of Chinese warplanes entered Taiwan's self-declared air defence identification zone, US Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement.

China sent 29 planes into Taiwan's self-declared air defence identification zone (ADIZ) —the third—highest daily number since the start of the year, and less than a month after China sent 30 warplanes on a similar mission.

The Taiwan issue&nbsp;has been at the forefront of US-China relations in recent months.

China has time and again tried to assert sovereignty and jurisdiction over the Taiwan Strait while the United States and Taiwan assert that the strait separating the island from China is an international waterway.

The Taiwan Strait tension goes back to 1949 when the defatted Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with the communists, who established the People’s Republic of China.

US Navy has said that the guided-missile destroyer USS Sampson conducted a "routine Taiwan Strait transit" on Tuesday (April 26), in accordance with international law.

China considers Taiwan to be its own territory and has not ruled out the possible use of force to take control of the island nation. Taiwan enjoys backing from the US.

However, Taiwan's armed forces are in a state of alert, especially in the aftermath of Russian invasion of Ukraine. The US had declared its support for Ukraine prior to the actual invasion but it faces allegations that its words have not translated into reality.&nbsp;

The United States has been carrying out such sailings about once a month, angering China, which views them as a sign of support for Taiwan, the democratically governed island that Beijing views as Chinese territory.

The Eastern Theatre Command of China's People's Liberation Army said that it monitored USS Sampson and issued warnings.

"The ship's transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States military flies, sails, and operates anywhere international law allows," it added. &nbsp;

There was no immediate response from China. &nbsp;

Earlier, after US destroyer USS Dewey along with the Canadian frigate HMCS Winnipeg sailed through the Taiwan Strait, the Chinese military condemned the move. &nbsp;
