I am a migrant who moved from my home town of Gorakhpur, first for my studies and then for my job. 
 
Why do we migrate?

Our best and brightest go to the United States, many people from Punjab&nbsp;to Canada, people from Kerala&nbsp;to the Middle East, and poor labourers to wherever they can find work.

We migrate for better opportunities, something that the local milieu does not provide us with.

Simply put, it's for a better life, to be what we would rather be, rather than be content with circumstances.

If you understand this, then you will understand why Indian students go to places like Ukraine to study medicine, engineering, etc.

The online, and often offline, chatter that I hear against Indian students who are stuck in Ukraine due to the war with Russia reminds me of the same outrage I heard when poor migrants made the arduous journey back home during the first COVID lockdown.

Every year, 14 million students in India sit for class 12 exams, with over 1.4 million students aspiring for a medical seat constituting even a good percentage of this total. This is an extremely consequential number. So, we have to scoff at the 20,000 or so students who have the privilege to go study abroad and add to medical professionals in India? On what basis? 
 
Indian colleges have approximately 1,18,316 MBBS seats per year. Where is the 1,18, 317th aspirant to go? 
 
Is she any less worthy than the 20-odd thousand aspirants above her in the merit list? I would say no, because if one in 10 is going to be selected, these exams are programmed as elimination tests, not selection tests. 
 
So where are these 'rejects', with perfectly decent intellects, supposed to go? 
 
If they are able to afford it, they go to places like Ukraine, if not much more expensive places. There is never an outrage if you hear someone go and attend an American college for any degree that will cost you way, way more than in places like Ukraine. Hence, students go there and will continue to go there even after this tragic war is over. 
 
So, why the hypocrisy? 
 
We see these students as the privileged lot. They are out there to buy their degrees, people think, with no proof whatsoever that they work any less hard than any medical student in India. Yes, their family money is paying for their education. That is true for most of our middle class and upper class households. Heck, even a poor migrant would rather send her daughter to an English-medium school if she could, and she should! What's criminal about this aspiration? What makes them the villains in our eyes? 
 
Oh, why did they not leave before the Russian attack on Ukraine?

Yes, of course, you expect that, when the whole world was caught off guard with this war, these 20 somethings should have been able to predict what was going to happen!

They may have had their exams, but they just believed when everyone said, "Arey, war nahi hogi." (There won't be any war).

But the government asked them to return!! Have you seen some of the advisories that western nations have given to India from time to time? When was the last time you checked the travel advisory when you planned a foreign trip?

The most legitimate criticism that I have seen is that this was the Indian "chalta hai, kuch nahi hoga" (nothing will happen) approach in full action. Then, by that standard, we are all guilty of so many things. 
 
So, stop this toxic culture of mocking people in trouble.

We, as Indians, should put an end to the poisonous culture of belittling individuals who are in difficulty.

Higher education needs to be democratised.

Higher fees and paid seats are the lifeblood of private colleges. Government intervention is required to make medical education more accessible.

Most Indian families argue that meritorious students don't need to pay their way to a degree. That can be a principled stand or just the fact that most people can't afford a private version of such degrees, in India or anywhere.

This is not to say the poor can suck it. Let the rich study. No, no, no....I am just pointing out the fact that in India, PhDs and students with masters degrees would rather apply to be constables or janitors in the name of government service than actually make better use of the privilege they have had of a degree and education they have obtained.

The failure rates both in numbers and years lost by our young for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), many state PSCs, Railway jobs or any government job than doing something else is genocidal, that is where our population dividend has gone to die!

I would rather appreciate these 20,000 or so students who had the opportunity to do something better and took it, and for that I support them.

Stop criticising Indian students stuck in Ukraine; they need to be appreciated

For Khwaish Thapa, 19, from the Indian state of Jammu &amp; Kashmir, the Ukrainian town of Kharkiv was home away from home. The Russian invasion of the country changed all that.

Just hours before she was asked to switch off her phone due to security alert, Thapa, a student in Kharkiv National Medical University, spoke to WION on how her life was transformed overnight.

“On February 23, I dropped my friend to the bus stand to board the flight back to India. I came back to my apartment. Until then it was just like any other day.”&nbsp;

Thapa was to board her flight back home on February 25. She is currently taking shelter in a basement with 500 other students. Nobody around her thought events would spiral into a war-like situation before she went to bed that night.&nbsp;

“At 5 AM, it was my father who called from India to break the news to me. And that’s when I peeped from my window to see and hear sounds of bombardment. On checking my phone, my friends had also sent videos of what was happening around the city,” she said. 
 
Students were cautioned by the local contractor to look for a safe place. The second year medical student chose to head to her university hostel with friends. At this point, even getting a cab was a huge deal, after waiting for nearly an hour, they managed to board a taxi to their university.

“Before going to the bunker, we tried to carry some food and water with us, but all the water tanks outside had run dry. There were long queues outside grocery stores, we took whatever was available - glucose, fruits, chocolates, wafers and readymade chapatis. Here at the college the basement, food and basics are looked after, while those who rushed to the metro stations are running out of supplies,” she added. 
 
In spite of the horrific situation she was in, Thapa was in control of her emotions. “I am holding up well, here we are all helping each other to cope with the situation."

She said that those evacuated are students from the western region of Ukraine. “For us to reach the border checkpoint of Poland, Hungary or Romania it will take around 17 hours and travelling is not a safe option at this point. Though we’ve been made to understand that civilians will not be harmed, but we have seen videos of apartments being bombed.” 
 
“My parents are worried, I’m making sure I keep them posted so they do not stress a lot.”

Asked if she ever felt unsafe before events turned for the worse in the country, she promptly said, “Ukraine is a beautiful and peaceful country. It feels like home.”&nbsp;

She mentioned there are ample shops selling Indian goods and Kharkiv is a comfortable place to live in. 
 
While speaking of safety, the student said even the pandemic went by peacefully, but what unfolded in these three days is unimaginable. She called the city “an easy going and adaptable place”.

As the situation outside is worsening, she along with her batchmates and friends, is hoping to be evacuated and brought back home at the earliest.

A 19-year-old student had his legs and fingers amputated after eating leftover Chinese takeout food from a restaurant in Boston, US.

According to reports, the college student, identified as JC, developed sepsis and gangrene after eating contaminated leftovers.

The teen’s case was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, which detailed how he was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital as he was suffering from “shock, multiple organ failure, skin mottling, and a rapidly progressive reticular rash.”

“The patient had been well until 20 hours before this admission, when diffuse abdominal pain and nausea developed after he ate rice, chicken, and lo mein leftovers from a restaurant meal,” the outlet said.

The person was a part-time worker at the restaurant. After eating the leftovers from the unnamed Chinese outlet, he immediately started throwing up, New York Post reported.

This was followed by chills, shortness of breath, headache, blurry vision, and chest pain. A friend of the patient said that his skin had started to turn “purple”.

“Multiple episodes of emesis [vomiting] occurred, with vomitus that was either bilious or red-brown. The abdominal pain and vomiting were followed by the development of chills, generalized weakness, progressively worsening diffuse myalgias [muscle pains], chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, neck stiffness, and blurry vision,” the journal said.

After undergoing blood and urine tests, he was diagnosed with a bacterial infection called Neisseria meningitidis, which caused his blood to clot and his liver to fail.

His skin necrosis was said to be caused by “purpura fulminans,” a severe complication of meningococcal septicemia.

Though the incident occurred in March 2021, the case went viral on social media after it was shared by YouTuber Chubbyemu last week.

The video has received more than one million views.

Eating leftovers can be risky. Well, we are not kidding as a 19-year-old college student from New England region in the US had to undergo amputation of both legs after savouring the same. &nbsp;&nbsp;

This strange case has come to fore after a video about it went viral recently. On February 16, the clip was posted on YouTube by channel 'Chubbyemu’, which is run by Dr Bernard Hsu, a licensed toxicologist. It has now got nearly one million views. &nbsp;

Shetty is from Mumbai city in India. He had previously got a near-perfect score of 1520. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“I felt I could do better so I practiced some more and took the SAT again. I thought I did better this time but I was pleasantly surprised to get a perfect score,” said Shetty. &nbsp;

Usually on the first day of the academic year, university campuses are packed with students catching up after the summer break. This did not happen on Tuesday.

Afghan universities wear deserted look as Taliban impose fresh rules

Sri Lankan police on Saturday named Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen, a Tamil Muslim resident of Kathankudy town regarded as the hub of local Islamic radicalism in the Eastern province, as the man who injured seven people by carrying out a stabbing attack at a shopping mall in New Zealand.

Seven people were injured, three critically, after 32-year-old Samsudeen attacked shoppers at the Countdown supermarket in west Auckland's LynnMall on Friday.

The ISIS-inspired extremist was under surveillance by New Zealand police and was shot dead by officers about two minutes after the attack began.

The police said they have identified Samsudeen, a resident of Kathankudy from the eastern district of Batticaloa, as the mall attacker in Auckland. Kathankudy is regarded as the home of local Islamic radicalism. Sri Lanka's 2019 Easter Sunday attacks that killed over 270 people, including 11 Indians, were traced to have links to Kathankudy.

The Sri Lankan government then had speculated that the Easter attack might have been triggered in the response to the mosque attack carried out in Christchurch just two months earlier.

Samsudeen arrived in New Zealand in 2011 from Sri Lanka on a student visa.

A Tamil Muslim, he came seeking refugee status claiming he and his father had experienced serious problems with Sri Lankan authorities due to their political background. He claimed they had been attacked, kidnapped and tortured and said the pair were forced to go into hiding, reported New Zealand news website stuff.Co.Nz.

He was accepted, and his refugee status was granted on December 20, 2013, after a tribunal found he had a well-founded fear of facing harm if he returned to Sri Lanka. It also accepted he had been attacked, abducted, physically mistreated and humiliated in the past, it said.

New Zealand Police first started investigating him in March 2016 when he shared videos and pictures of graphic war-related violence, and comments advocating violent extremism. He also posted comments in support of terrorists involved in other attacks.

In 2017, he was arrested at Auckland Airport, where he was in possession of a one-way ticket for Singapore, after he told a person at an Auckland mosque he wanted to go to Syria "to fight for ISIS", the report said.

When his refugee status looked set to be revoked in 2018, Samsudeen protested that decision, saying: "I'm very afraid of returning to Sri Lanka because I'm afraid of the authorities there, and the same risks and fears [that] I had when I left my country are still there in Sri Lanka. Also, young Tamil men face serious problems in Sri Lanka.

"We face arrest, detention, mistreatment and torture as we're always under suspicions by the authorities because of the [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam],"&nbsp;he had said.

Meanwhile, the Muslim minority civil society in Sri Lanka condemned the stabbing attack in Auckland.

"On behalf of all Sri Lankans, and Sri Lankan Muslim community in particular, we unequivocally condemn this senseless and terrible act of violence,"&nbsp;the Sri Lanka Muslim Council said in a statement.

The Council members said they concur with the statement of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden stating that hate crimes and acts of violent extremism are not, and must not be, associated with any nationality, ethnicity, culture.

"We express our solidarity with the people of New Zealand at this moment of grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,"&nbsp;it said.&nbsp;

The Islamic State-inspired radical who was shot dead by police after he attacked people with a knife in an Auckland supermarket has been identified as 32-year-old Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen.

Seven people were stabbed and wounded at the supermarket in New Zealand on Saturday. Three of the victims remained hospitalized in critical condition and three more were in stable or moderate conditions. The seventh person was recovering at home.

According to local media reports, the 32-year-old attacker was a Sri Lankan national who had been convicted and imprisoned for about three years before being released in July.

The attacker’s identity was revealed a day after the court gave permission to the New Zealand government to disclose the man’s name—which was otherwise prohibited under the suppression order.

Samsudeen was granted name suppression by a high court in July 2018.

The Taliban’s acting higher education minister on Sunday imposed a ban on co-education classes in Afghanistan, saying that “the women will be allowed to study in university, but they won’t be sitting in the same classroom with the men.”

Abdul Baqi Haqqani said the Taliban group will respect progress made in women’s rights, but only according to their strict interpretation of Islamic law.

“The... people of Afghanistan will continue their higher education in the light of Sharia law in safety without being in a mixed male and female environment,” AFP quoted Abdul Baqi Haqqani while speaking at a meeting with elders, known as a loya jirga.

He further said their government will ensure that girls and boys are segregated at primary and secondary schools.

“The Taliban wants to create a reasonable and Islamic curriculum that is in line with our Islamic, national and historical values and, on the other hand, be able to compete with other countries,” Haqqani said.

He rejected the charges and denied the TKP/Kivilcim group even exists.

In an opinion piece for the Washington Post last year, Zirngast wrote that his arrest was "a perverse confirmation of the authoritarianism I've spent the past several years chronicling and opposing".

He also criticised the attempt to "silence the entire democratic opposition in Ankara".

Zirngast had also published articles on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984 and is designated a terrorist organisation by Ankara and its Western allies.

In the midst of this interaction, Sandmann said, he noticed that a Native American protester - since identified as Phillips - "began playing his drum as he waded into the crowd, which parted for him."

"He locked eyes with me and approached me, coming within inches of my face. He played his drum the entire time he was in my face," Sandmann recalled.

"I never interacted with this protester. I did not speak to him. I did not make any hand gestures or other aggressive moves," Sandmann wrote, adding that he was "startled and confused" as to why Phillips approached him.

Sandmann said he reasoned that by remaining "motionless and calm" he hoped to defuse the situation.

His account was reinforced, at least in part, by a New York Times report on Sunday quoting Phillips, 64, as acknowledging he had approached the crowd of students in a bid to ease racial tensions that had flared between the mostly white teens and the African American protesters.

"I stepped in between to pray," said Phillips, an elder of Nebraska's Omaha tribe and a well-known activist who was among those leading the Standing Rock protests in 2016-2017 against the construction of an oil pipeline in North Dakota.

The decision was greeted with an uproar in Pakistan, where hundreds of women are murdered and attacked by men each year, with many struggling to get justice in a sluggish court system that advocates say is often slanted against them.&nbsp;

"I was shocked," Siddiqui, who spent three weeks in hospital after the attack and whose back still pains her, told AFP. "But unfortunately it was true."&nbsp;

Siddiqui's long struggle to put her attacker behind bars had already drawn attention from women's rights campaigners, but when Hussain walked free it unleashed a wave of anger.&nbsp;

"I am heart broken, speechless, shattered after hearing what our judiciary system did to you @khadeeeej751 - But do not give up , keep fighting, and we shall overcome this together," tweeted actress Urwa Hocane.&nbsp;

The reaction intensified when the court's judgement was released, with critics accusing it of "victim-blaming" after it poked holes in Siddiqui's credibility.&nbsp;

The judgement questioned why she did not name Hussain as her attacker immediately, despite testimony saying she had fallen unconscious and noted that at one point prior to the assault she had written a letter proposing marriage to him.

The outcry was so great that Pakistan's Supreme Court has now taken up the case and will hold hearings later in the summer, it announced&nbsp;Wednesday.

Hashmi, Hussain's father, has told AFP that his child is innocent. "My son is a brilliant student," he said. "How can he be a criminal?"

Siddiqui's case highlights how Pakistan's judicial system fails women, says Hina Jilani, a leading lawyer and human rights activist.

The young law student is lucky in that she received high-profile support and it came to the Supreme Court's attention, Jilani says -- but that is rare.

"There is a prejudice against women," she argues.

Pakistan is deeply conservative, and violence against women remained "pervasive and intractable" in 2017, according a yearly report by the country's Human Rights Commission.

It documented thousands of reported violent incidents including rapes, assaults, sexual harassment, acid attacks, murders, and even four examples of "stove burning" -- understood to be when a woman is taken into a kitchen, covered in kerosene and set alight then the perpetrators claim she was burned by the stove.

The real figures, the commission said, are likely to be much higher.

Many cases of violence against women are not reported to authorities. In rural areas such cases often bypass the formal justice system and are dealt with by village "jirgas" or councils, often in a manner that is punitive for women.

But even for those cases which do enter the court system, the conviction rate is "below one percent", says Rabeea Hadi, an activist with the Aurat Foundation, a women's rights watchdog.

In cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse, it is "almost zero", adds Anbreen Ajaib, the executive director of another women's rights group, Bedari.

Siddiqui says women, including herself, are often pressured to drop their cases, and can face blackmail and harassment.&nbsp;

But she is determined to see hers through, and says the attention it has received has prompted many women to contact her to say they, too, are encouraged to stand up for themselves.

"I have been told by the prosecutors... that I'm probably the first woman who is fighting so hard to get justice," she told AFP, sounding calm and confident.

"It has proved that if women fight, they can turn things around, so they should never give up... they should not tolerate injustice, violence and blackmail."

The boy behind the Florida school shooting on Wednesday, Nikolas Cruz, was a member of a "white supremacist group" and had been a part of the military-style training routines, the rights group Anti-Defamation League said Thursday. Nikolas Cruz, 19, described by fellow pupils as a “weird and racist” gun-obsessed, has been charged with murdering 17 people at his former school in Parkland, Florida. Jordan Jereb, believed to lead the shadowy Republic of Florida (ROF) group, said that Cruz had been "brought up" by a member of the group and joined its training exercises near Tallahassee, Florida. Jereb said that he didn't know the 19-year-old suspect personally and that "he acted on his own behalf of what he just did and he's solely responsible for what he just did," the local media reported. It advocates creating a "white ethnostate" in Florida. As per reports, the group "borrows paramilitary concepts from the anti-government extremist militia movement." "I don't know precisely what he believes," Jereb said. "I know he knew full well he was joining a white separatist paramilitary proto-fascist organization." He further said that Cruz was a member of its "cell" in Clearwater, Florida, about 300 kilometers (180 miles) northwest of Parkland, and had trained with them. "He probably used that training to do what he did yesterday. Nobody I know told him to do that, he just freaked out," Jereb said. He carried a black duffel bag and a black backpack, where he hid ammunition magazines, the report said. He arrived at the school in Florida in an Uber at 2:19 pm and made his way into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he pulled out a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle, according to details described by the authorities at a news conference on Thursday. Cruz shot people in the hallways and inside five classrooms on the first and second floors of the freshman building. He eventually discarded the rifle, a vest and ammunition on a stairway and blended in with fleeing students and got away, the authorities said. After leaving the school, he went to Walmart, and then bought a drink at a Subway. He also stopped at a McDonald’s. He was arrested by the police without incident as he walked down a residential street at 3:41 pm.

The SIT officers of Gurgaon police, who investigated Ryan International School student Pradyuman Thakur&#39;s murder case before it was handed over the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have now come under CBI&#39;s scanner as their call records and bank details are being scrutinized.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

After taking over the probe, the CBI arrested a class 11 student in connection with the murder and ordered an inquiry into the &#39;botched-up probe&#39;&nbsp;by the SIT members of the Gurgaon police.

Reports say that the SIT members would&nbsp;be soon served legal notices which will prevent them fleeing the city.&nbsp;

Ashok Kumar, the school bus conductor, was arrested on September 8, the same day as the murder. Gurgaon police concluded that the conductor tried to sexually assault&nbsp;Pradyuman and when he resisted he killed him. The botched-up investigation by the Gurgaon police since have been laid bare.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Kumar, who was released on bail recently, claimed that he was tortured by the&nbsp;Haryana police and fored to confessed to the crime. &nbsp;

Meanwhile, Pradyuman&#39;s family will approach the Supreme Court on Monday challenging the bail granted to Ryan trustees, the Pinto family, by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

&nbsp;An eight-year-old boy died after he was thrashed by a school teacher for stammering during a lesson in Phullanwal village, police said today.

The boy was identified as Bindu Ram alias Guddu.

Bindu&#39;s family has alleged that a lady teacher on Saturday dragged him by the hair and harshly pulled his ears, Dugri Police Station SHO said today.

Guddu, a class I student at Government Primary School here, fell ill after the incident.

He was admitted to a private hospital where he succumbed to the injuries yesterday, Singh said.

District Education Officer (Elementary) Jaspreet Kaur said an inquiry has been marked and necessary action would be taken after receiving the inquiry report.

The Justice (retd) AK Roopanwal Commission, which was constituted by India&#39;s HRD Ministry to look into the circumstances leading to the death of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad Central University, has in its report said that the research scholar did not belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. 
 
There is, however, no official confirmation on the reports being submitted to the country&#39;s University Grants Commission (UGC) so far. 
 
Top officials in the HRD Ministry did not comment on the development. 
 
HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the report had not reached him yet. 
 
The 26-year-old had committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of a hostel room in the university based in the southern Indian state of Telangana.
