Amid the escalated war in Iran, a recent US intelligence assessment indicated that the Islamic Republic is unlikely to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in the near term, viewing its control over the critical waterway as its most effective leverage against the US, three sources familiar with the reports told Reuters. The findings suggest Tehran may continue restricting access to the strait - through which roughly a fifth of global oil supply passes - in an effort to keep energy prices elevated and pressure Donald Trump to seek a swift resolution to the nearly five-week-long conflict. US intel sees NO QUICK END to Iran’s Hormuz chokehold: Report

Eight Indian ships have successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict in West Asia began on 28 February, placing India among the countries with the highest number of vessels navigating the war-affected waterway. The narrow strait between Iran and Oman remains a critical global energy route, carrying much of the world's oil and gas supplies. Traffic has fallen sharply since the war broke out, directly impacting the movement through the Hormuz. However, a limited number of vessels from certain nations have been allowed through, often after diplomatic contacts with Tehran. The eight Indian ships that have transited include LPG carriers Shivalik, Nanda Devi, Pine Gas, Jag Vasant, Green Sanvi, BW Tyr and BW Elm, as well as the crude oil tanker Jag Laadki. These vessels carried vital cargoes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking and other energy supplies destined for Indian ports such as Mundra, Kandla, Mumbai and New Mangalore. Earlier transits involved Shivalik and Nanda Devi, which delivered around 92,000 tonnes of LPG. They were followed by Jag Vasant and Pine Gas with another 92,600 tonnes, and later by BW Tyr and BW Elm carrying approximately 94,000 tonnes combined.India has relied on direct talks with Iran and practical maritime measures to secure these passages. The Indian Navy has played a quiet but important supporting role through Operation Urja Suraksha (Energy Security). The Navy has deployed several frontline warships, including destroyers and frigates, in the Gulf of Oman near the exit of the strait. While Indian naval vessels have not entered the strait itself, they provide real-time guidance, monitoring and escort once merchant ships clear the narrow passage, helping ensure the safety of Indian seafarers and cargoes. All crew members on the transiting vessels have remained safe. These successful transits have helped ease immediate pressure on India's energy supplies, though many more Indian-flagged vessels remain stranded in the Persian Gulf. New Delhi continues diplomatic efforts to secure safe passage for the remaining ships.Other countries have also seen success. China has had multiple vessels transit, including container ships such as CSCL Indian Ocean and CSCL Arctic Ocean, after initial setbacks. Greek-owned tankers have recorded a high number of crossings. A Liberia-flagged crude oil tanker, Shenlong Suezmax, was among the early vessels to reach India carrying Saudi crude.Ships linked to Bangladesh, Philippine, Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan, Russia, France, Japan and other nations have been able to pass or are in the process of passing Hormuz after coordination with Iranian authorities.

Military action cannot be an option to free Strait of Hormuz: Macron

The Iran war has shown that the Strait of Hormuz is no longer a fully reliable route for global oil trade. Oil-producing nations in the Gulf, caught in tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran, are now urgently advancing plans for new pipelines, transport corridors and infrastructure to bypass the chokepoint. These projects had been discussed for years, but were repeatedly delayed. Now, they are being treated as a strategic necessity despite high costs and political complexities.
Existing pipelines are operating at full capacity
Saudi Arabia’s East-West Petroline, stretching 1,200 km from Abqaiq to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, is operating at its full capacity of roughly 7 million barrels per day (mbpd). The UAE’s Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline (ADCOP), which carries up to 1.8 mbpd from Habshan to Fujairah outside the strait, is also at maximum capacity. Together, these routes provide around 8–9 mbpd of bypass capacity—far short of the estimated 17–21 mbpd that typically transits through the Strait of Hormuz.
Alternative plans in the UAE, Oman and Iraq
One key proposal is the expansion of the UAE’s Fujairah corridor. Plans include an additional pipeline that could add about 1.5 mbpd and link offshore fields directly to export terminals outside Hormuz. Another proposal is a pipeline to Oman’s Duqm port on the Arabian Sea, likely to cost around $10 billion. This would provide a direct outlet for Gulf crude beyond the Strait of Hormuz. There are also plans to expand the Iraq–Turkey pipeline from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, which has a nominal capacity of 1.6 mbpd. The project was delayed by political disputes, but possible extensions to southern Iraqi or Gulf-linked supplies make it a candidate for increased use. The long-dormant Iraq Pipeline through Saudi Arabia (IPSA), which runs to the Red Sea, is also being reconsidered for reactivation. Also read: ‘Indian friends are safe’, says Iran on Strait of Hormuz transit as IRGC reportedly charges $1 per oil barrel in yuan and stablecoins
New overland energy corridors
Several proposed corridors aim to link Gulf producers directly to the Mediterranean and possibly beyond. These include pipelines from Qatar and the UAE across Saudi Arabia, and potentially through Iraq or Jordan, to terminals in Israel or Egypt. Such routes would bypass not only Hormuz but also the Bab el-Mandeb strait in the Red Sea—another flashpoint during Iran-linked conflicts—as well as the Suez Canal. The India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor is another ambitious initiative with potential energy components.
Rail and logistics networks
Governments in the region are also examining rail and logistics corridors. Projects include Saudi Arabia’s planned landbridge and the UAE’s Etihad Rail. These could transport refined products and support pipeline distribution to alternative export hubs, including Oman’s Sohar and Duqm ports.https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-israel-war-with-iran-tehran-tightens-grip-on-hormuz-demonstrates-capabilities-to-strike-gulf-1775124006365/embed
Costs, terrain and political barriers still persist
Despite growing momentum, major obstacles remain. Many routes pass through countries that have political tensions with one another. Terrain challenges and regional rivalries add further complications. Approvals could take years for some projects. Tens of billions of dollars in investment will be required. Cross-border agreements and security guarantees will be difficult to secure. Also read: UK to lead talks on reopening Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions with Iran
Shift away from Hormuz dependence is the need of the hour
In spite of these challenges, the Iran conflict has highlighted how easily threats to the Strait of Hormuz can disrupt global energy markets. This has pushed governments and industries to prioritise alternative routes and logistics. Contingency plans are now being treated as core investments in energy security. While change will take time, reliance on the Strait of Hormuz as the primary artery of global oil trade is set to decline.

Days of dependency on Strait of Hormuz for global oil trade will be over, even if it takes several years, as the Iran war has proven how Tehran can put a chokehold on the chokepoint. Gulf states are accelerating pipeline and transport plans to bypass the strait. But will they succeed?

The long-dormant Iraq Pipeline through Saudi Arabia (IPSA), which runs to the Red Sea, is also being reconsidered for reactivation. Rail and logistics networks Governments in the region are also examining rail and logistics corridors. Projects include Saudi Arabia’s planned landbridge and the UAE’s Etihad Rail. Many routes pass through countries that have political tensions with one another. Terrain challenges and regional rivalries add further complications. Approvals could take years for some projects. Tens of billions of dollars in investment will be required. Cross-border agreements and security guarantees will be difficult to secure.

‘Strait of Hormuz will be opened, but not for Trump’: Iranian lawmaker slams US president amid war

US President Donald Trump has said that securing the Strait of Hormuz is “not our job,” signaling a potential shift in Washington’s approach to protecting one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. His remarks come amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf region linked to the US-Iran conflict, raising fresh questions about regional security responsibilities and the impact on global energy supply lines.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that communication with Iran is ongoing, primarily through intermediaries, with some level of direct contact also taking place.

Rubio outlined Washington’s war objectives, including degrading Iran’s military capabilities, particularly its missile, naval and air power, while avoiding a ground invasion.

He also issued a strong warning on the Strait of Hormuz, saying the key global shipping route will reopen “one way or another,” either through Iranian compliance or coordinated international action.

The statement comes amid continued disruption in the strait and rising global concern over energy supplies, with the waterway remaining central to the ongoing conflict.

‘Just take it’: Trump says countries have 2 options amid Iran war, either ‘buy oil from US’ or go get from Strait

US-Iran War | Report: Trump Open To Ending War Without Reopening Strait of Hormuz

Kharg Island, a small outcrop on the opposite side of the Persian Gulf from US bases in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, is the centre of Iran’s oil industry, handling around 90 per cent of its exports. Its strategic importance has placed it at the centre of US considerations, as President Donald Trump weighs whether American forces could seize the island to pressure Tehran. “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t,” Trump said, signalling that military options remain under review. Analysts, however, warn that targeting such a critical hub risks wider economic disruption and could further unsettle global energy markets. In a post on Truth Social, Trump also threatened to strike Iran’s broader infrastructure, including desalination plants, warning that if a deal to end the war is not reached and the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened, the United States would “blow up and completely obliterate” Iran’s power plants, “oil wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalination plants), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched’.”
A risky operation for US forces

Military experts, quoted by the Associated Press caution that any ground operation would expose US troops to significant danger. Kharg Island lies close to Iran’s mainland, placing forces within range of missiles, drones and artillery. Seizing Kharg Island could escalate the conflict, said Danny Citrinowicz, according to AP, an Iran expert at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies. Iran and its proxies, including Yemen’s Houthi rebels, could intensify retaliation by laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz and launching drone strikes on targets across the Arabian Peninsula, from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea. “It will be hard to take. It will be hard to hold,” Citrinowicz said of Kharg Island. “And it might damage the economy, but not in a way that will force the Iranians to capitulate.” ALSO READ: Water war': Trump threatens to blow up Iran’s desalination plants. The US has already struck multiple targets on the island which includes air defenses, a radar site, the airport and a hovercraft base. The move could damage Iran’s economy, but may not compel Tehran to concede or end hostilities. One analyst described the idea as “a military mission in search of a strategic rationale,” highlighting uncertainty over what tangible outcome such risks would deliver. Iran and its allies have already demonstrated their ability to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, raising the prospect of a broader conflict. As the conflict intensifies, the question is not only whether the island can be taken, but whether doing so would meaningfully change the outcome.
