In pics | 'Vow of revenge': North Koreans rally to mark 73rd anniversary of Korean War, denounce US

Mass rallies in North Korea's Pyongyang vowed a "war of revenge" against the United States, after the geo-economically isolated nation in the Korean peninsula marked the 73rd anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean war.

North and South Korea have been in a state of perpetual conflict after the Korean war, 73 years ago ended in a truce. The two countries had come into being in 1948 with a consensus to avoid a civil war. Both Korea and Vietnam had split in half, with pro-communists organising a government in the North and anti-communists organising a government in the South, and thus forming present-day North and South Korea.

North Korea vows to 'punish the US' on 73rd anniversary of Korean war

North Korea on Saturday criticized the recent visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to China, accusing him of attempting to rally support from China to pressure Pyongyang into surrendering.

North Korea vows ‘overwhelming offensive’ against US military

The ruling party of South Korea expressed willingness to restrict the voting rights of Chinese nationals, who are living in the country, on issues of politics and medical insurance law. The ruling party, because of its latest stance, faced accusations of stirring up anti-Chinese sentiments in the country, amid increasing tension.

While delivering a speech on Tuesday, President Yoon Suk-yeol’s conservative People Power Party (PPP) chairman Kim Gi-hyeon told lawmakers that the relations between South Korea and China “should be re-established under the principle of reciprocity”.

<h2 lang="en-US">'Fair to deny foreigners the right to vote'</h2>

“We will work to limit the voting rights of Chinese residents in this country,” Kim stated. “In local elections last year, about 100,000 Chinese people living in South Korea were eligible to vote, while South Koreans in China were not allowed to vote at all,” he added.

Most of these residents, who were born in China, hold Chinese passports and have Korean ancestors. “It’s only fair to deny foreigners the right to vote in this country unless their home countries grant our own citizens the same right,” Kim stated.

He emphasised on how Chinese people allegedly abused the public health insurance system of South Korea which he stated is another key area which needs to be corrected as per the principle of reciprocity.

“The health insurance fund created by the sweat and hard work of the people must not be abused for foreign medical shopping. We will stop health insurance frauds and freeriding on health insurance by Chinese people,” Kim stated.

Kim made the statement after President Yoon, while presiding over a government cabinet meeting, appealed for changing laws and regulations to align them with the “principle of reciprocity”.

The statement was made by Xing earlier this month when he met with Lee Jae-myung, Yoon’s nemesis and head of the liberal opposition Democratic Party of Korea.

Last week, Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon said that they are also reviewing permanent residence regulations for foreigners to apply the principle of reciprocity to voting rights.

Ruling party expresses willingness to limit voting rights of Chinese nationals in South Korea

South Korea's unification ministry announced a historic step towards transparency by revealing plans to release a comprehensive report on forced labour practices in North Korea.

This groundbreaking endeavour aims to raise global awareness about the human rights violations prevailing within the North Korean&nbsp;regime, as reported by the Korea Times.

Drawing insights from interviews conducted with North Korean defectors over the past five years, the ministry intends to conduct an in-depth inquiry into the prevalent forced labour practices within the country.

By shedding light on these issues, South Korea hopes to bring attention to the plight of the North Korean people.

<h2>Analysing pre and post-Kim Jong-un era </h2>

The ministry's report will closely examine changes in forced labour practices both before and after the rise of the Kim Jong-un regime in 2011. This analysis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of forced labour conditions within North Korea.

Furthermore, the study will scrutinise the relevant laws and systems surrounding forced labour to assess their impact on the lives of North Korean citizens. By delving into the historical context, South Korea seeks to present a nuanced perspective on the labour landscape under different leadership periods.

<h2>Comprehensive approach to human rights reporting </h2>

In addition to the report on forced labour, the South Korean&nbsp;government has outlined plans to release public reports on various aspects of North Korea's human rights record.

These reports will address crucial topics, such as the rights of North Korean women and the general population's right to work.

Previously, the North Korean Human Rights Records Center, affiliated with the ministry, compiled reports for internal reference. However, recognising the significance of increasing awareness, the government aims to disclose the findings while ensuring the protection of personal information and privacy.

<h2>North Korea's policy direction </h2>

The recent reinstatement of Kim Yong-chol, a former top North Korean party official in charge of affairs with South Korea, has sparked curiosity about Pyongyang's intentions.

The move is seen as a potential signal of the North's efforts to strengthen its engagement with the South. With Kim's expertise in inter-Korean dialogue and his past role in denuclearisation talks, it is presumed that North Korea seeks to enhance its response mechanisms and cooperation in the inter-Korean realm.

This development aligns with South Korea's goal of fostering constructive relations while addressing human rights concerns.

S Korea's landmark report to expose N Korea's hidden forced labour practices

In South Korea, a teenager has been arrested for attempting to open an aeroplane emergency door mid-flight. As per a News 8000 report, after an investigation by the Incheon Airport police, the 19-year-old tested positive for drugs.

<h2>What happened?</h2>

On June 19th, a red-eye flight en route from the Philippines to Seoul, South Korea, became the scene of 'turbulence' after a 19-year-old Korean man tried to open the plane's door.

The man boarded the flight from Cebu in the Philippines. One hour into the flight, he began "acting strangely" due to which the flight crew moved him to the front of the plane — closer to the exit door — to keep an eye on him, reported CNN.

As per officials from Jeju Air, the passenger also complained of feeling "pressure" on his chest.

Soon after, he attempted to open the plane's door. Talking to reporters, he later claimed that he "felt I was being attacked".

As per a statement by the airlines, he was "immediately subdued by the crew, who used a lasso rope and tie wraps to keep him controlled for the rest of the flight".

Due to their timely action, the door to the plane stayed closed, and the plane landed undamaged. Furthermore, none of the 180 passengers aboard the plane were hurt.

<h2>The investigation</h2>

The man was handed over to the police at Seoul’s Incheon Airport at 7:30 am. Following that, with the passenger's consent, a simple drug test was run, which found he was under the influence of drugs.

Furthermore, as per the police, a hair and urine sample has been sent to the National Forensics Service for a full analysis. It will help determine what kind of drug was taken, along with the amount consumed. Results of this test are expected within a week or two.

As per CNN, a warrant has been issued for the 19-year-old. He has been accused of violating the Aviation Security Act.

“The flight which was originally scheduled to depart from Taipei to Singapore at 1.30 am was subsequently cancelled,” it added.

As per Focus Taiwan reports, the flight had more than 300 passengers on board.&nbsp;

According to Taiwanese media outlets, the left nose wheel toppled at the time the plane was landing at 12:06 am after sensors detected abnormal tyre pressure before the aeroplane's descent.

“When the plane landed, the left tyre and metal rim on the nose gear were shorn off, leaving only the right nose tyre to keep the plane upright and moving,” reported Taiwan News.

Also, there were no signs of the wheel on the runway or taxiway, Focus Taiwan cited Taoyuan International Airport as saying.

As per the aviation safety portal SKYbrary, a nose wheel assists a plane in directional control during take-off and landing, and “allows the aircraft to manoeuvre whilst on the ground”.

<h2>Incident to be investigated, says&nbsp;Taiwan's transport minister</h2>

Taiwan's transport and communications minister Wang Kwo-tsai said that the incident will be probed by its Civil Aeronautics Administration and relevant authorities, as per CNA reports.

“Hotel accommodation and flight refunds have been arranged for our passengers where applicable. Scoot will provide assistance to customers with connecting flights from Singapore,” CNA quoted Scoot as saying.

The airline further said that it had arranged a recovery flight TR897D for the remaining passengers from Taipei to Singapore on Monday at 8:45 pm.&nbsp;

The recovery flight landed in Singapore at 1:35 am on Tuesday, as per Changi Airport's website.

"Scoot sincerely apologises for the disruption and inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority, and we will continue to provide assistance to affected customers where necessary," CNA quoted Scoot as saying.

North Korea launched two missiles, says Japan, South Korea amid Seoul's live-fire drills with Washington

Seoul's spy agency on Wednesday revealed that North Korea, in an attempt to gather South Koreans' personal data, replicated the country's largest internet portal Naver in real-time. &nbsp;

This was part of a sophisticated phishing attack designed by Pyongyang to steal user information through several fake versions of the Naver website.

The agency further urged the residents to be cautious about wrong web addresses.

The multifarious services by Naver include Google-like maps, financial services similar to Apple Pay, and popular blogs and chat forums, which are used by South Koreans extensively on a&nbsp;day-to-day basis.

South Korea's National Intelligence Service said that Pyongyang had created the phishing site, naverportal.com, that replicated Naver's main page in order to hack South Koreans' valuable personal information such as IDs and passwords.

In a press release, the NIS asked South Koreans to be vigilant and check if the domain address of Naver is legitimate.

"As North Korea's hacking attack methods against our people are becoming more sophisticated, we ask people to be extra vigilant," NIS said in a statement, adding measures have been taken to block the phishing site from South Korean users.

"Please cease accessing it immediately if you spot a page that's not a standard Naver access domain URL," it said.

"If the domain address is not the legitimate Naver access domain ― www.naver.com ― such as www.naverportal.com, please immediately stop accessing it," the agency said.

The agency further revealed that previously, North Korea had attempted to steal South Korean IDs and passwords by duplicating Naver's log-in page, but creating a fake portal was a new approach.

"The North has upgraded its attack scheme in order to better extort private information," it said.

"We are tracking the activities of the hacking group in cooperation with foreign agencies as the server is located overseas."

Naver also released a statement asking users to be extra cautious while operating the portal.

"We urge users to check if the address is the right one and pay extra attention when accessing Naver," the company said.

<h2>Fake Naver site appeared 'clumsy', reveal experts</h2>

According to the experts, the fake Naver site did appear 'clumsy' but was 'good enough' to fool the ones who were not vigilant.

"By the nature of this kind of attack, South Koreans are at a disadvantage because we are on the receiving end," AFP quoted former national security official, Choi Gil-il as saying.

"We have to be constantly on guard to fend off cyber phishing."

As per the Yonhap news agency reports, North Korea's state-backed hacker group Kimsuky hacked into the intranet of the Seoul National University Hospital in the month of May and stole the personal data of about 800,000 patients and workers.

According to Seoul, Tokyo and Washington, last year, Pyongyang stole as much as $1.7 billion in cryptocurrency and backed its weapons programmes by collecting data through "malicious cyber activities".

"North Korea is carrying out omnidirectional cyberattacks, such as theft of cryptocurrency and hacking of sensitive information, all over the world," Seoul's foreign ministry said in a statement.&nbsp;

That activity "not only causes property damage to innocent individuals and companies but also poses a serious threat to the global IT ecosystem as a whole", it said.

A former executive at South Korea's Samsung Electronics, who hasn't been identified yet, was indicted on Monday (June 12) over claims and suspicion that he stole company technology for a copycat chip factory in China. The prosecutors said that the person is also accused of jeopardising national economic security.&nbsp;

South Korea is a chipmaking hub, but globally, the battle to produce more and more is raging. The chip industry competition was recently described by President Yoon Suk Yeol as an "all-out war", with massive pressure from the geopolitical and economic rivalry between the United States and China.&nbsp;

In a statement, the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office said that the defendant is accused of illegally acquiring Samsung data to build a rival factory only 1.5 kilometres away from a Samsung chip manufacturing facility in Xian, China.&nbsp;

The prosecutors mentioned that the executive also formerly worked at SK Hynix as a vice president and further estimated that the theft of data had caused at least $233 million worth of losses for Samsung Electronics.&nbsp;

Former Samsung Electronics executive accused of stealing secrets for China chip factory

South Korea said on Monday (June 12) that Chinese warships are carrying out a salvage operation in waters where a North Korean space rocket crashed. Last month, North Korea unsuccessfully attempted to launch a military satellite. The satellite crashed into the water near the west coast island of Eocheongdo. The South Korean military is carrying out its own search for the wreckage of the North Korean satellite.

According to the South Korean military, the rocket crashed into the sea where exclusive economic zones of China and South Korea meet. The South has already pulled some debris from the water. It includes a large cylindrical object.

"Regarding the Chinese vessels, a salvage operation is currently being carried out at a point 200 km (124 miles) west of Eocheongdo, and the waters are open sea," Lee Sung-jun, spokesperson for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a regular briefing on Monday.

"We understand that some Chinese warships are active in that open sea," Lee said, adding that there were "no disturbances" around the Chinese activity that required any response from the South Korean side.

South Korea and Japan said that they scrambled their air force jets after Russian and Chinese military planes entered the former’s air defence zones as they flew over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea on Tuesday.&nbsp;

This is the sixth time that Russia and China have undertaken patrols near South Korean and Japanese territories since 2019.

China and Russia conducted joint patrol as part of the two militaries' annual cooperation plan, China's defence ministry said.

Four Chinese and four Russian military planes entered South Korea's air defence identification zone (KADIZ) without notice, Seoul's military said.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said that between 11.52 am and 1.49 pm (local time), the Chinese and Russian aircraft entered the KADIZ and exited it.

There have been concerns among China’s neighbouring countries and their Western allies over China’s increasing military assertiveness in the South China Sea.

The growing tensions prompted the coast guard of the United States, Japan and the Philippines to hold held their first trilateral naval exercise in the South China Sea last week.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong denounced the United Nations Security Council meeting on the country’s recent satellite launch upon “robbery demands” from the United States, reported the state media KCNA, on Sunday (June 4). She also dubbed the meeting “most unfair” while rejecting sanctions and vowed to take “self-defensive” action.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Very offended’ over the UNSC meeting: Kim’s sister</h2>

The North Korean leader’s sister, as per the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that the UN meeting last week was yet another reminder that the council is acting as a “political appendage” to the “gangster-like” Washington. She also went on to say that the UNSC by accepting US’ “robbery demands” is ignoring North Korea’s right to space development.

“I am very offended that the UNSC routinely criticises our exercise of sovereign rights as the United States wants, and strongly condemn and reject this as the most unfair, prejudiced act of interfering in internal affairs and infringing our sovereignty,” said Kim Yo Jong, as quoted KCNA.&nbsp;

She also called North Korea’s satellite launch a “legitimate, self-defensive countermeasure” amid threats from the US and its allies. Pyongyang had also accused Washington of raising tensions in the region with their recent annual military drills.

The North Korean leader’s sister also vowed to continue launching spy satellites which the country has called necessary to counter Washington’s growing US military presence in the region.

“The DPRK will continue to take proactive measures to exercise all the lawful rights of a sovereign state, including the one to military reconnaissance satellite launch,” said Kim Yo Jong, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Additionally, she said Pyongyang will never acknowledge sanctions resolutions by the UN, “even if they slap them hundred, thousand times.”&nbsp;

<h2>What happened at the meeting?</h2>

The UNSC meeting over North Korea’s failed launch of its spy satellite was called by the US last week. The launch has since been slammed by the US, South Korea and Japan who said it violated UN resolutions barring the nuclear-armed country from any tests using ballistic missile technology.

This led the UN’s under-secretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo on Friday to take the UNSC to task over the “lack of unity and action” on North Korea’s tests. Meanwhile, analysts have warned that if Pyongyang succeeds in its satellite deployment, the surveillance capabilities would allow North Korea to target the US and its ally South Korea more accurately.&nbsp;

On May 31, North Korea launched its Chollima-1 rocket which minutes later lost thrust and crashed into the sea with its satellite payload. Subsequently,&nbsp;in a rare announcement on the same day, Pyongyang said that it would conduct another test as soon as possible.&nbsp;

‘Very offended’: North Korean leader’s sister slams UN meeting on spy satellite launch

Defence leaders from around the world attend the Shangri-La Dialogue, which traditionally focuses on major security issues. This year in Singapore, the topic of North Korea and its lack of missile testing is in the spotlight. The defence minister of South Korea claimed that some nations ignored North Korea's illegal behaviour, which he claimed threatened to undercut U.N. sanctions against the country's missile and nuclear programmes.

North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong on Thursday (June 1) promised more spy satellite launches, a day after Pyongyang launched one such satellite that crashed because of a rocket failure. In a statement carried by the KCNA, Yo Jong said it is certain that the military reconnaissance satellite will be correctly put into space orbit shortly and start its mission. KCNA reported that the Chollima-1 rocket, carrying a military reconnaissance satellite known as "Malligyong-1", crashed into the sea. The state media also published on Thursday photographs of what is said was the new rocket lifting off from a coastal launch pad. The white-and-grey rocket had a bulbous nose, apparently for carrying a satellite or other cargo. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Ankit Panda from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said the photographs confirmed that the rocket was a new design. "The launch used the new coastal launch pad they've built at Tongchang-ri, so we might see a larger space launch vehicle use the traditional gantry that has seen some work recently," Panda said. Following Wednesday's launch, US-based monitors reported that commercial satellite imagery showed significant activity at the main pad. Kim Yo Jong on criticism of spy satellite launch As the launch was criticised by many including Japan, South Korea, and the US Kim Yo Jong said on Thursday the criticisms were "self-contradiction" as the US and other countries have already launched "thousands of satellites." During a meeting with Austin in Tokyo, Hamada said, "We need to strengthen ties between Japan and the US and also between Japan, the US and ROK (Republic of Korea), as it is possible that North Korea launches again." Austin, meanwhile, told the Japanese defence minister that he wanted to bolster cooperation between their alliance, South Korea and Australia, as they also face challenges posed by China and Russia, Reuters reported. North Korea: Kim Jong Un's sister promises ‘successful’ spy satellite launch after failure

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may be facing a sleep disorder while his alcohol and nicotine dependency might be worsening, reported Bloomberg citing South Korea's spy agency National Intelligence Service (NIS). The NIS briefed South Korean lawmakers about the intense collection of overseas medical information by North Korea, specifically related to insomnia, including details about medications like Zolpidem used to treat it.

Yoo Sang-bum, a lawmaker from South Korea's ruling People Power Party and executive secretary of the parliamentary intelligence committee, shared further information from the NIS briefing&nbsp;mentioning that North Korea has recently imported significant quantities of Marlboro and Dunhill cigarettes, along with high-end snacks typically consumed with alcohol.&nbsp;

Additionally, artificial intelligence analysis suggests that Kim Jong-un's weight is estimated to exceed 140kg, the report said quoting Yoo who added that&nbsp;the situation for ordinary North Koreans has worsened, characterized by growing food shortages and a surge in grain prices to the highest level since Kim Jong-un assumed power.&nbsp;

Yoo also highlighted an increase in crimes, suicides, and deaths due to starvation in the country.

The NIS informed lawmakers that Kim Jong-un likely observed a failed satellite launch on Wednesday morning, which inadvertently triggered a false emergency alert from the Seoul government, causing panic among the public.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may have 'insomnia, alcohol dependency': South Korea's spy agency

South Korean nuclear safety experts who visited Japan's wrecked&nbsp;Fukushima&nbsp;nuclear power plant said on Wednesday that detailed analysis was needed to verify Japan's plan to release tonnes of contaminated water from it into the sea.

The&nbsp;Fukushima&nbsp;Daiichi nuclear station, about 220 km (130 miles) northeast of Tokyo, was destroyed by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in 2011, triggering three reactor meltdowns.

Japan plans to dump more than one million tonnes of contaminated water that was mainly used to cool the reactors into the sea by around this summer, triggering alarm at home and abroad, especially in fishing communities.

"Given our closest location, we are reviewing whether Japan has an appropriate discharge plan from a scientific and technological standpoint," Yoo Guk-hee, chairman of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, who led a delegation on a site visit last week, told a briefing.

The Japanese utility responsible for the plant, and the Japanese government, say the water is safe after being treated, filtered and diluted though it does contain traces of tritium.

Yoo said there had been progress in checking facilities and securing samples and documents but further work was needed to reach any conclusion about the water's safety.

"Additional detailed analysis and checks are required," he said.

During its six-day trip, the 21-member South Korean team had focused on water purification, transport and release equipment, as well as sampling and analysis facilities.

The visit came days after President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held a summit in Seoul this month amid a thaw in relations following years of tension between the neighbours, both important U.S. allies.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is also conducting a safety review of Japan's plan to release the water. It is expected to announce its results in the coming weeks.

South Korea went into a panic of evacuation after North Korea launched its first spy satellite. This satellite is called "CHOLLIMA-1" and it malfunctioned in its second stage of launch. USA, Japan & South Korea have strongly condemned this launch. Why? What's the story here?

Gravitas: Evacuation warnings in Seoul

North Korea has launched a rocket shortly after it announced it was planning to send its first satellite into space. However, Tokyo claims it is a ballistic missile. The US condemned North Korea's launch saying that it raises tensions. However, North Korean officials on Wednesday said the launch ended in failure after the rocket's second stage malfunctioned. Pyongyang reported that the new "chollima-1" satellite launch rocket failed due to in-stability in the engine and fuel system. It said there was abnormal start of the two stage engine after stage one separation.
