'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga' gets lackluster start

Rajkumar Hirani may have maintained a stoic silence ever since his name got embroiled in the #MeToo movement, but the director's colleagues in Bollywood have been batting for him ever since the controversy broke out. The latest to join the list of supporters is actress Sonam Kapoor, who while promoting her upcoming film 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga' said that while she is a supporter of the #MeToo movement, judgment should be reserved in the case of filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani.

“I am a huge supporter of the #MeToo movement and this is a very important question... This is not the right platform because our film is as important as the movement.

“I know Raju Hirani very well, I have known him for many years and I have huge respect for him as a filmmaker and as a man. I think we all should reserve judgement and be very responsible before we say anything more on this subject.. Because we don’t need to derail this movement,” Sonam said.

Sonam, who has lent her voice to the #MeToo movement in the past, said more understanding is needed about the movement. “Media and all journalists don’t understand how important the pen is, how important your voice is and it can make or break a person’s life. So wait, do proper research and ask what is actually happening and understand what is actually happening. I promise after the film releases, I will have something to say.

“But till things are not clear, don’t make click-bait articles and play with somebody’s life. It will derail the movement completely.” She further added, “I always want to believe a woman but suppose by chance, if it is not true, then how bad it will be for the movement, especially if it is somebody like Raju Hirani.”

The actress urged people to have a better understanding of the issue. “With Tanushree Dutta (who kicked off the #MeToo movement in India last year) there was a lot of truth in the article, there was a lot of research done, lot of people came forward.. So you understand where it is coming from.”

Sonam said she would want to believe every woman but asserted in case of Hirani one needs to reserve judgement. “This film is important and it should not become about that. If I have to sit down and talk about it, I can talk about it at length but we need to be careful about the people we accuse and people whose side we take. You have to take side and I don’t believe in sitting on the fence so I will take my side when I have to,” she said.

Hirani was earlier credited as the co-producer of 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga' but as his name came up in the #Meetoo movement, makers decided to remove his name from the film's credit.

Hirani name was called out earlier this month for sexual harassment when a woman "assistant" alleged, according to an article in HuffPost India, that he had sexually abused her more than once between March and September 2018 while working on the film 'Sanju'. Celebrities like Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi and Javed Akhtar have spoken in support of Hirani.

Sonam teaches me everything, she is brilliant: Anil Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor starrer 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga' has been a historic film for several reasons. The film not only pairs Sonam Kapoor and her father Anil Kapoor on screen for the first time, but is also perhaps the first commercial film in Bollywood that has an LGBTQ love story at its core. The film also has a transwoman as its writer. Ghazal Dhaliwal, a transwoman writer has been writing dialogues and screenplay for Hindi films for some time now. She has worked on films like 'Lipstick Under My Burkha', 'Qarib Qarib Singlle' and 'Wazir' before. But with 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga' she makes her transition as the story writer of the film. Born as Gunraj, a boy, Ghazal had Gender Dysphoria - where a person does not associate with the biological gender he or she is born with. Back in 2014, on an episode of Alternative Sexualities on Aamir Khan's show 'Satyamev Jayate', Ghazal had recalled how she was always felt like a woman but trapped in a man's body. "I was born in the wrong body. I was born in the body of a man but I never felt like a man. I liked playing with girls, I liked wearing my mother's clothes, playing with her dupattas... when I was 5 years old, I realized that I liked feminine things. My aunt saw me once playing with my mother's clothes, and she slapped me. That was the first time I realized that how society views me, and how I view myself is different," recalled Ghazal. Ghazal's initial years as Gunraj was a struggle. "For the longest time I could not tell people how I felt... because my behaviour was a little feminine, I was teased a lot in school. And I kept trying to hide my identity. For every day, every minute, ever second, I felt trapped... as if I was in jail." She first spoke to her father about her identity at the age of 14 and while they were p[atient, they were unable to understand what she meant. At 16 she fled from home and boarded a train to Delhi but got scared mid-way and called her parents back home. As her father came to take her back home, she admitted that it was not a phase for her. Her parents came around and have supported her ever since. View this post on Instagram Alright then! Because finally, my soul was at peace with my body." Her love for movies made her shift to Mumbai in 2005 after working in Infosys for two years. While she studied engineering, she always had aspirations to become a writer in Bollywood. With a degree in filmmaking from St. Xavier's, she has in the past assisted filmmaker Govind Nihalani. Ghazal has been an active voice for the LGBTQ community and has used public platforms to share her story and inspire others. She has also made a short film called 'A Monsoon Date' that stars Konkona Sen Sharma in the lead and was screened at MAMI last year. ON Wednesday, Bollywood celebrities celebrated the festival at home with their families and then headed to Karan Johar's grand bash. After a super fun bachelorette that last over a weekend in Amsterdam, Priyanka Chopra came back to India just in time to celebrate Diwali with her family. Priyanka, who is to wed Nick Jonas in December, shared photos from her home as she posed with her mother and brother. "Happy Diwali. So good to be home to celebrate with my loved ones. I wish for the world to be bestowed with love, light and happiness. (sic)" Priyanka wrote. Happy Diwali. So happy to be home to celebrate with my loved ones. I wish for the world to be bestowed with love, light and happiness. 💥✨ pic.twitter.com/dU4iU2bXmv — PRIYANKA (@priyankachopra) November 7, 2018 × Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan hosted a dinner at their residence which had Karisma Kapoor and her children and Soha Ali Khan along with her husband Kunal Kemmu in attendance.
If you follow Bollywood celebs closely, it must have struck you by now that Sonam Kapoor, who is known for her fashion statement, has been missing on every Diwali party held by her colleagues in Mumbai. Well, the reason for that is not any animosity (as you must have thought) but because she is celebrating Diwali with her family in London.
Sonam’s sister Rhea Kapoor shared a few photos of her trip on Instagram as her fam posed for happy pictures. The photo includes papa Anil Kapoor and mother Sunita, sister Sonam and her husband Anand Ahuja along with others.

In one photo, it is clear that they all went to watch the musical Hamilton as she captioned her photo collage as: “The plan is to fan this spark into a flame”, a quote from the worldwide phenomenon musical, with music, lyrics and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Bollywood's #MeToo movement has many divided, with some proactively standing by the statements of survivors while others refuse to align themselves to these stories.

After sexual allegations against director Vikas Bahl grew stronger with at least three women coming forward with their separate accounts of harassment, Bollywood divas Sonam Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut stood divided over a war of words that ensued after both spoke on the matter. Also read: Hansal Mehta bashes Vikas Bahl over #MeToo allegations, quits Twitter after being trolled

When allegations against Vikas came to fore, Kangana too added her experience with Vikas who directed her in the film ‘Queen’. Kangana then said, "Every time we met, socially greeted and hugged each other, he'd bury his face in my neck, hold me really tight and breathe in the smell of my hair. It took me a great amount of strength and effort to pull myself out of his embrace. he'd say 'I Love how you smell K'."

To this, Sonam at an event said: “She says a lot of stuff and sometimes is hard to take her seriously.”

This obviously triggered a verbal fight between the two as Kangana then retorted: “What does she mean by saying, ‘it’s hard to believe Kangana’? When I am sharing my Me Too story, who gives her a right to judge me? So, Sonam Kapoor has the license of trusting some women and some she won’t. What makes her so unsure of my claims? I am known to be an articulate person and I have represented my country in many international summits. I am called as a thought and youth influencer to these summits, I am not known because of my dad I have earned my place and credibility after struggling for a decade.”

Kangana’s statement became viral and was instantly picked up by the Twitterati. As Sonam has quit Twitter, she took to Instagram to post a peace out message for Kangana or that’s what it reads like.

She wrote: “Women need to stand together! irresponsible media have misquoted me or taken my quote out of context and made other women react. All I want to say is that all I have is compassion and love for you. I’m proud of where I come from and so should every other woman or man. Let’s stand together and speak up. Let’s not pull each other down with bitterness and negativity. Love is always the answer.”

Bollywood's #MeToo movement has many divided, with some proactively standing by the statements of survivors while others refuse to align themselves to these stories.

Also read: Hansal Mehta bashes Vikas Bahl over #MeToo allegations, quits Twitter after being trolled When allegations against Vikas came to fore, Kangana too added her experience with Vikas who directed her in the film ‘Queen’. Kangana then said, "Every time we met, socially greeted and hugged each other, he'd bury his face in my neck, hold me really tight and breathe in the smell of my hair. It took me a great amount of strength and effort to pull myself out of his embrace. he'd say 'I Love how you smell K'." To this, Sonam at an event said: “She says a lot of stuff and sometimes is hard to take her seriously.” This obviously triggered a verbal fight between the two as Kangana then retorted: “What does she mean by saying, ‘it’s hard to believe Kangana’? When I am sharing my Me Too story, who gives her a right to judge me? So, Sonam Kapoor has the license of trusting some women and some she won’t. What makes her so unsure of my claims? I am known to be an articulate person and I have represented my country in many international summits. I am called as a thought and youth influencer to these summits, I am not known because of my dad I have earned my place and credibility after struggling for a decade.” Kangana’s statement became viral and was instantly picked up by the Twitterati. As Sonam has quit Twitter, she took to Instagram to post a peace out message for Kangana or that’s what it reads like. She wrote: “Women need to stand together! irresponsible media have misquoted me or taken my quote out of context and made other women react. Sonam Kapoor says was 'misquoted' after Kangana Ranaut bashes her for questioning her #MeToo story

If you thought Bollywood was past its catfight days, think again as Sonam Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut get caught up in a new controversy over entertainment industry’s own #MeToo movement.

At a recent event, Sonam criticised Kangana as she too opened up on her sexual harassment encounter with 'Queen' director Vikas Bahl. She added to the claims made by a Phantom Films staffer who said that she was harassed by the co-owner in her hotel room in Goa. Kangana added to this and said that she supports the woman who has come out as she too has encountered similar incident with respect to Vikas while they were shooting for Queen.

When asked to comment on this, Sonam said that what happened was just disgusting but also said that 'Manikarnika' actress says many things and it’s hard to take her seriously sometimes. She added that at the same time, she likes Kangana’s spunk.

Sonam said, “I think Kangana wrote something. Kangana is obviously Kangana Ranaut. She says a lot of stuff and sometimes is hard to take her seriously. I love the fact that she has spunk and she says what she believes. I really respect for that. I don’t know him, I don’t know the situation. If what is written what is written is true, then it’s disgusting and awful. If it’s true, then they should be punished for it.”

This irked Kangana, who in an interview bashed Sonam’s statement and questioned her for her “judgemental” comment. She said, “What does she mean by saying, “its hard to believe Kangana” When I am sharing my me too story, who gives her a right to judge me? So, Sonam Kapoor has the license of trusting some women and some she won’t...What makes her so unsure of my claims, I am known to be an articulate person, I have represented my country in many international summits, I am called as a thought and youth influencer to these summits, I am not known because of my dad I have earned my place and credibility after struggling for a decade. She isn’t known to be a great actress, neither she has the reputation of being a good speaker...... What gives these filmy people right to take digs at me!!!! I will demolish each one of them.”

Anurag Kashyap also apologised to the woman who came out against Vikas as she confided in him when the incident took place but he didn’t take a stand for her. He, however, said that he “named and shamed him in private.”

Sonam Kapoor goes off twitter, says 'it's too negative'

The problems in the life of Kalindi, Avni, Sakshi and Mira- the four Veeres of Shashanka Ghosh's hugely hyped film Veere Di Wedding are not really that serious. The problems might seem a bit superfluous for you and me. But maybe for these rich women, who plan holidays at a luxury resort in Phuket on a fluke, such problems are life-altering, and thus we must sit for two hours and understand what their issues are.

For a lot of us, the life of the four school friends may seem quite ideal. Kalindi(Kareena Kapoor), despite loathing the concept of marriage, says 'yes' to boyfriend Rishabh(Sumeet Vyas). Her three besties, rally around her as Kalindi- with a dysfunctional family of her own- gets set for a loud ostentatious Punjabi wedding with her beau in Delhi. During the course of the wedding, problems, issues of the other three friends come to the fore. Married to a 'Gora' Mira's(Shikha Talsania) marriage is yet to get approval from her conservative father. Sakshi(Swara Bhasker), an impulsive, potty mouth brat, is on the verge of a divorce and Avni(Sonam Kapoor), despite being a top shot lawyer, cannot find a suitable boy for herself.

While the story is tad predictable, it is the camaraderie between the four actresses that make the film light up and enjoyable. The friendship does not look forced and you end up enjoying their mindless banter.

It is perhaps the performances of the four actress that makes Veere Di Wedding a thoroughly enjoyable film. You know that a lot of things are outrageous - yet the four make you miss your friends, or remind you of some insane thing that all of you did together. Ghosh infuses desi tadka to Sex and The City and Bridesmaid mashup - and the result is very entertaining if not thought-provoking.

While Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor are easily the big stars of the film, it is Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania who shine the most. The two are absolutely natural- and make their characters Sakshi and Mira their own. It's a delight to watch Bhasker dealing with the neighbourhood aunties, or swearing at the drop of a hat. The two actresses get the best lines and together create a riot on screen. Kareena, in her first film post maternity break, doesn't disappoint. She has always been a natural on screen and as the flawed Kalindi, delivers a solid performance. Sonam has her moments as the uptight Avni.

The men ably support the women in the film (Here's a line I thought I'd never write for Bollywood film). Sumit Vyas, in a role that seems to be an extension of his role from the web series Permanent Roommates, also delivers a genuine performance. Vishwas Kinni who plays West Delhi dude Bhandari to the T is an actor I'd watch out for.

Veere Di Wedding can be best enjoyed if you have a bit Delhi in you. The situations, the dialogues, the humour is all very specific to the city. It is going to be more enjoyable if you understand the little things that make the city what it is- the divide between the Punjabis and Bengalis, South and West Delhi and why the mention of Khalsa College makes the uptight Avni shudder.

While the story lacks the freshness, it overcomes with some hilarious screenplay. Most of the film is light, feel good and as the cast has been reiterating time and again, it does not set out to change something or deliver any message. It is ultimately a film about four friends who are flawed, irrespective of their gender.

There are moments which are outrageous in the film, the climax is flat, the characters deal with issues that may seem irrelevant to you, they are always dressed too perfectly and unrealistically (if I may add) but Veere Di Wedding should still be celebrated because it's a first. Because seldom does Bollywood churn out a buddy film with women as the central characters that make you laugh and celebrate sisterhood.

Afterall, why should only boys have all the fun?

The film, despite its flaws, celebrates sisterhood beautifully.

Anil Kapoor will be seen in his upcoming film ''Race 3'' which will be released on 15th June.

For the first time, Anil Kapoor will be working with his daughter Sonam Kapoor.

Anil Kapoor is a proud father and when asked about how he has been feeling about working with his daughter, he said, "We’ve almost finished shooting for Ek Ladki... with only the climax pending. I am proud of the fantastic actress Sonam has become. She has found her own way with Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Saawariya), Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Delhi 6), Ram Madhvani (Neerja). Working with her is like working with any other actress — she’s professional and makes my job easy." The film also stars Rajkummar Rao and Juhi Chawla in pivotal roles.
Not only this, Anil will also be working with his son Harshvardhan Kapoor in Kannan Iyer's Abhinav Bindra biopic.

But I’m fortunate because they’ve made it on their own. They’ve always found directors who want to work with them.
Courting one controversy after another, Veere Di Wedding actress Swara Bhasker has currently become the talking point after her masturbation scene in the film invited strong reactions from critics and fans alike.
Coming to her daughter’s defence, Ira Bhasker in a conversation with a portal spoke about the sexual connotations in the film. She said, "Let me begin by saying that sexuality per se in Indian cinema is not a subject that has been directly expressed. At the same time, historically, our cinema is unique in the sense that it has developed, over the years, a very complex and refined idiom on eroticism. And that idiom is the song.”

She further added, "A lot of things that can’t be addressed directly can be addressed through the song. Be it the Hindi film song, or the Bengali film song. Malayalam or Tamil. You don’t find this anywhere else—as a fundamental and defining feature of the form itself. A lot of the articulation was done through song. Emotional articulation. Articulation of what is tabooed. Sexuality and eroticism."

Stating more examples, Ira who teaches at a government university said, "Just think of Mughal-e-Azam: in that song Jogan Ban Chali, that word jogan actually is Meera—the one who has renounced the world for her lover. So this completes dedication to the object of your passion. What is that but female desire?"

"These films didn’t have direct representation of sexual act or the act of lovemaking. Mahesh Bhatt has said that the most erotic sequence in Indian cinema is that of Dilip Kumar stroking Madhubala’s face in close up in Mughal-e-Azam," said Ira.

Swara later took to her Twitter profile to share her mother’s piece of advice and wrote: “Not grandmother, now the mother weighs in on the Great Masturbation Debate.. ?????? #veerediwedding #saga #MummySpeaks”

Why should we hold up Pakistan, which is a failing state - I don`t understand why we keep taking pleasure and feeling a sense of self-worth from all the silly things that happen in Pakistan," Swara said. Also, several users slammed the actress for her masturbation scene, claiming that they went to watch the movie with their grandmothers and "got embarrassed"."Hey @ReallySwara just watched #VeereDiWedding with my grandmother. We got embarrassed when that masturbation scene came on screen. as we came out of the theater my grandmother said I`m hindustan and I am ashamed of #VeereDiWedding," the tweets read. (sic) In `Veere Di Wedding`, Swara plays the role of Sakshi, a free-spirited and impetuous woman who is going through a failed marriage.
